Motherboard went to Svalbard, Norway to see the vault, located deep inside a mountain, in person.

The vault is meant to store previous genetic variations of seeds, since we tend to alter the genes of our crops to make them more effective, we might end up causing the older base variations to go extinct. The guy explains that in the video.
We're not storing so we can sow crops incase of a food shortage, we're storing so a crop type doesn't go extinct incase we f*ck up on a genetic alteration.
And the seeds an idividual country stores in this bank belongs to that country. That's how banks work.

The fact that this and many other facilities like it exist, as well as billions spent on government bunkers the world over, and how everyone isn't a prepper is baffling... They are telegraphing the future in plain sight
This is like saying that because seat belts exist, you will have a car accident in the future, and if there is a big enough catastrophe to kill the majority of humanity, it will probably be from nukes or bio weapons, so nothing you can do, even those in bunkers or underground facilities will not be completely safe. Just go live your life without regrets.

The idea that the “they” is one specific group of people making like decisions for one specific event is the absolute wrong way of thinking about things. There are so many potential catastrophes and the scientific community, governments across the world, etc. all have plans to mitigate potential risk. Be it climate change, war...hell even alien contact. Obviously many of the plans seem apocalyptic in nature but it doesn’t mean that the apocalypse is on the immediate horizon necessarily.

Physical key is better than a datta system that can break, there are probably some key "people" who have Key's
First, it's a backup vault containing plant seeds with little to no monetary value, not a treasury. Second, it's in the Arctic, no one would go that far just to steal some seeds. Lastly, in the scenario of global catastrophe, the vault should be easily accessible to make restoration of plant life possible.
Electronics can freeze, a key works forever. And who would steal seeds from a lonely island like 500km north of norway...

I see IRRI which stands for Internation Rice Research Institute located in the Philippines where scientist are studying rice genes and how to create a super rice which is pests proof and can grow any condition and as far as i know there is already a rice that can grow even if it is submerged in water for long periods of time perfect for countries that are prone to typhoons thisnrice can grow even if submerged in flood water.
I did my internship in IRRI years ago and had the opportunity to enter its Gene Bank. It's huge! It contained thousands of rice seed varieties. Being the biggest contributor to the Global Seed Vault, it has sent thousands of rice seed varieties to Svalbard, as well.
