    I'm fascinated with Hoover craft when I was young. They are so cool seeing in the movies. I have a toy from matchbox. Let me look for it. It's been 4 decade. 🙂

    Zubr class hovercraft is the best in the world. And this is clever choice for every navy

    The SRN4 is the most beautiful and iconic type of hovercraft in my opinion.

      I am privileged to have travelled on both the Princess Margaret & Princess Anne during school trips to France back in the 1970's. The SRN4's were magnificent machines in every way and it is an absolute travesty that they were all broken up for scrap...

      My wife and I rode the Princess Margaret on our trip to Europe in 1980 to France, but there was a force 10 gale in the channel so we had to take the ferry back. That passage we thought would never end! The hovercraft was just like a passenger airplane inside without flight attendants. All in all, quite an experience.

    • @danielhoffmann67

      @@kobie1585 Not really. The Titanic sunk on her maiden voyage and more than 1500 people lost their lives while only a single SRN4 out of 6 had been lost by an incident and there were only four fatalities in the whole service time (30 years) of it.

    Travelled on the SRN 4 from England to France in the early 90s'. Very smooth and the interior as I remember, was kitted out just like an aeroplane. Very smooth and comfortable.

    • @joegrey9807
      @joegrey9807 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sea must have been like a mill-pond then. Anything slightly rough and it's very uncomfortable - vibration from the engines and vertical and lateral jolting with every wave.

    • @carl48uk
      @carl48uk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joegrey9807 Not how I remember it, just smooth as silk, no uncomfortable vibration from engines. The hovercraft that size didn't move with the waves, it hovered over them. The English channel in my experience is never like a mill pond so negates your statement about how smooth the sea must have been.

    • @joegrey9807
      @joegrey9807 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carl48uk Yeah I live in Folkestone and over the last 40 years have been across on most of the ferries, Hovercraft, hyrdrofoils, seacats, and a few sailing boats - it can get very entertaining at times! Possibly the times I took the hovercraft were exceptional, but I know that the IoW one is the first 'boat' to the island be cancelled in rough weather. The vibration was definite though - even in Dover town centre you had to talk louder when one was taking off, and that prop noise vibrates the body.

    Hivus 48 at 8:24 is my favorite, by looks. It's the most futuristic looking, sort of sci-fi. Like a Star Trek hovercraft. Also it's extremely high front slant let's it take the highest waves of any of the hovercraft as compared to their own size, by far. The inability to take heavy seas is the biggest reason hovercraft are not more used, so I'm happy to see the engineering that went behind this particular model. I couldn't quite tell but it looks like there are bow thrusters at the front just below the cockpit. It looks like air is thrust out to the left or the right from two large tubes in each direction. At 8:40 what do you all think?
    Other thoughts, hovercraft being the most gas guzzling of any type of ship as a ratio of its mass, by far, except. Constant upkeep on the ballooning skirt, which is a part that flexes and bends far more than any car tire and is also subject to punishing torsional loads as it hits ground obstacles or waves over and over at high speeds.
    LCAC2 is partially addressing the fuel part by reducing the number of engines. I'm thinking they should go with high speed jet turbine engines that do nothing but recharge a bunch of capacitors, and then switch out all the propeller drives for electric motors. The instant torque and super high RPM's of electric motors would make for amazingly good fan drives.

    Hover Craft make for sensible, practical transportation. Has the world given up on this mode of transport? The Zuber-class is impressive and terrifying at the same time. Those engines probably do quite a bit of sand blasting.

    Nice Compilation of crafts- but please correct your info about the Iranian TONDAR Crafts. Iran claims to have build these crafts but they are in fact British build BH7 crafts, sold to Iran at the end of the 60´s. FYI, here an extract from Wikipedia:
    " ...By January 1968, Iran had placed an order for a pair of BH.7s, as well as for the smaller SR.N6.[5] A total of two BH.7 Mk.4s and four BH.7 Mk.5As would be operated by the Imperial Iranian Navy during 1970s. The British Hovercraft Corporation considered the Middle East to be a key sales area for the type; a sales drive was targeted towards both Iran and Saudi Arabia.[16] Following the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Iran became unable to acquire spare components and support from overseas due to the enactment of several trade embargoes; however, it has been able to continue to operate its hovercraft fleet..."
    Iran has been able to reverse engineer and rebuild these crafts- but they have never build a craft on their own.

    • @genericpseudoname160
      @genericpseudoname160 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure you could, but it's more of a sheet along the sides that helps trap air underneath it, so there isn't that much you can or need to protect. Maybe make it out of kevlar or some inflammable material and it's as protected as it needs to be. Also, these aren't supposed to see active combat and the bladder chatching fire would be highly unlikely considering their capabilities and properties.

      From my experience they don't like waves. Can operate on the English Channel or the Solent where they can be cancelled if the weather turns for the worse, but I wouldn't like to be on one in the Atlantic with the wave height even in normal conditions.

    • @Gargamoth

      @@joegrey9807 It seems besides short distances on land and calm water, they are very limited.

    • @joegrey9807
      @joegrey9807 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gargamoth Yeah a few niche uses: from the mainland to the Isle of Wight in England - short crossing, hovercraft by far the quickest as it can go up the wide tidal beach to the sea wall where there's no harbour. Search and rescue in tidal areas (The UK lifeboat agency has several) - no other way of doing this really. Used to be used on some winter river/short sea crossings where they could operate when boats couldn't and before ice stable for driving on (I think they usually use ice-breaker ferries now). And army landing craft.
