Take stamp collecting, train/plane spotting, model railways, sudoku, crosswords, model airplane making ... the list goes on and on - all of the "useless", but nevertheless popular. Yes, the bike in the video with the fragmented wheels might seem totally useless but the inventor has clearly worked hard to make the ride smooth and he probably learned a lot in doing so. Furthermore, sometimes something that initially appears to be totally useless turns out to be useful after all or at least, leads to something that is.
