- A&W is iconic not only for the root beer, but the coney dogs were next level. This great sauce copycat can let you relive those great moments sitting at the drive in on a leisurely afternoon with a frosty mug.
Even if you aren't old enough to share those memories with me, you'll love the taste and versatility of this sauce. It's just fabulous on a baked potato or french fries. Makes my mouth water just thinking about putting it on nachos with some melty cheese!
Give it a try, I think you'll be glad you did and create your own delicious memories of goodness from your own kitchen.
A&W Coney Dog Sauce
INGREDIENTS
• 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
• 1 pound ground beef, uncooked
• 1 large onion, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 cups water
• 1 (12 ounces) can tomato paste
• 1 (8 ounces) small can tomato sauce
• 1 ½ tbsp. chili powder
• 2 tbsp. cumin
• 2 tsp. salt
PREPARATION STEPS
1. Heat the oil in a heavy duty sauce pan or Dutch oven. Add the ground beef lightly brown, add onion. Cook just till ground beef is no longer pink. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds. Add all remaining ingredients and mix to combine.
2. Over medium heat, bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer until thick, about 1 1/2- 2 hours.
3. Stir every 15 minutes or so to avoid sticking.
4. Use hotdogs, nachos, baked potatoes, etc.
5. This freezes well.

Tuesday night was Coney Night at A&W when I was a kid. They were $0.15, fifteen cents apiece. Our dad would load us up in the car and go to A&W, the carhop would bring us out a tray of coneys and root beers in the cold, frosty mugs. Heaven.
I was the person who was responsible for making the A&W Coney sauce at the A&W where I worked. I too loved it. I took a copy of the original recipe and it has about 12 ingredients in it. The only thing I need to break it down because it is to make about 4 pounds at a time. If you want the original recipe let me know.
Absolutely! I would love to have the real thing. You can send it to my email, cskrecipes@gmail.com.
Thanks for watching!
yes please
Heck yeah! I'd like to have it too.
yes please
Did you get the A&W Coney hotdog sauce. Would love to have it.
Something wrong with anyone who doesn’t absolutely LOVE chili dogs! 👏🏼👏🏼
Chili dogs are ok, but Coney's are better. I prefer Flint style Coney's (dry sauce) over others. Detroit style Coney's and some others in my bias opinion are sloppy chili dogs, some even have ground up beans in the sauce.
@@Mr-Corey-June you missed. There is no “better” w a hot dog. All are completely “DIFFERENT”. And if a real hot dog fan, you will realize they are all good , all different.
@@hbgriss They're not "all good", I've had some really bad meat mush. If you haven't, lucky you. The video is about "coney's" not chili dogs, you clearly don't understand the difference.
Amen!
@@Mr-Corey-June , Just an FYI: Jackson, Mich. is well known to be the KING of Coney Island, hot dogs!! The crumbled beef is soooooo tender and on the dry side, and they're topped with finely diced onions, served on a warm, steamed bun... they are the absolute best!! Bar none!! If the chili sauce in Flint is a crumbled, dry sauce... I would bet on it, that the recipe came from somebody who grew up in Jackson!! Detroit's are just chili dogs, they're not Coney Islands!!
A&W also had root beer that was phenomenally good, NOT the stuff in cans, but at the restaurants, where one could buy it by the gallon…
Hell yeah! We'd pedal our BMX bikes there to buy it by gallon.
The crinkle fries!
The root beer was fantastic, thick and creamy. Buying it by the gallon and talking it home was good, but never as good as a frosty mug from of the tray handing off the car window. Even if we had mugs chillin' in the freezer, it just wasn't the same as the restaurant.
Because it is draught rootbeer. 🙌
Our family had the mugs, we would keep them in the freezer.
I didn't know they had root beer or I would have gone there
This made my mouth water! I've got to try this recipe. Thank you so much!
So glad it sounds good to you. I think it's the bomb! Thanks for watching!
Yum! I’m going to make that tonight! My mouth can’t wait to taste this. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
My mouth is watering while watching the plating-up of this culinary perfection!
Glad it looks yummy to you. Thanks for watching!
Our Mom worked her first job at an A&W stand in Ohio back in the late 50's.
I do not remember those A&W dogs, but remember Lum's dogs during the 70's in Ocala, Florida that were slow cooked in beer, they were great with any choices of toppings or plain with a basket of fries and a rootbeer, adults got the Lum's in-house drafts.
We had a Lums in upstate NY! Loved those hot dogs in beer.
It looks great! We used to have an A&W here in town and Tuesday was coney day!
Great memories! Hope you enjoy.
Wow that looks absolutely delicious 😋👍💯💯💯
Yaaaaaaaay I did that also with a carton of A and W root beer
When I was 10 years old I had a girlfriend and her father owned the local A&W. We used to hang out there after school and we got everything free. Including the arcade games. I'm 53 now and I still know her and her family all these years later. When I was a really little kid my parents used to take us there to get rootbeer in icy mugs. They had these really cute baby mugs. I must have been only 4 years old.
Great memories! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I will try this sauce pretty soon! Keep on the great work, madame! Cheers to your channel 🍻🍻
Thanks so much. Thanks for watching!
Get it up somewhere for everyone and thank you. Very nice to do.
I use to get these in Reno with onions and the soft cheese. But that was over 30 years ago. Thanks for the wonderful memories
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Your sauce looks tasty!!
Love Detroit and her Coneys, Love A&W, and also love all the other tied-for-third-place runners-up, too!! LoL
I grew up eating these. My mom worked there. One day a week and a gallon of rootbeer!root beer!!
This came up randomly... excellent! Real home cooking
Thank you so much 🙂
Great recipe! Looks amazing

Thank you so much for the feedback.
Looks fantastic!
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching!
Ive been makeing something similar for years for church potlucks,! got the recipe from my second cousin who would make it for school fairs, but the recipe starded with 3 pounds of hamburger, 3 onions choped ect....I had to reduce the recipe a lot! Lol!
Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Looks great
Thanks for watching!
It's the best.
We still have an A&W here in Phoenix!!
👍🏾
Thank You!!!
Here in Canada A&W is a completely different company then the US one. I hear the US one doesn't have a great reputation but the Canadian one is one of the highest ranked fast food restaurants. Coney Fries was very popular here before Poutine fever took over. Eventually only a handful of A&W restaurants kept coney sauce on their menu and sadly none do in my area anymore. I miss Coney Sauce so much, I have bookmarked this video so I can make my own soon. Our A&W's sell their A&W seasoning in the restaurants so I'm going to buy a bottle and add it to my Coney Sauce!!!
Great idea! Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video I have to try this and I subscribed
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching and for the sub. More great recipes to come...
I make mine chili dog sauce with a few more items in it
On Friday, February 2, 2024 I made this recipe. WOW! This is amazing. So easy to make but so DELICIOUS. Thank you for sharing this recipe. No more can sauce.
Thanks so much for the review. And thanks for watching!
2 for a dollar? Today, probably 2 for 15 dollars. That really was a memory, wasn't it?
Absolutely! A wonderful memory of the family together!
I went to an A&W recently in Frankfort MI on my sister's wedding day.. I went in to get 4 A&W Coney Dog's, The bill came to $30!!! That's $7.99 for a freaking Coney Dog!!
Wow, sign of the times
in Canada A&W had Coney fries too
Fun fact for those who don't already know. Coney Dogs originated in Detroit, not Coney island.
Absolutely! High school years were in Detroit, that's where I learned to love the real ones.
Looks good. I subscribed. l look forward to watching your channel grow. Jerry
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
This is what TH-cam should be.
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!
A&w sauce I make uses ground up ring baloney fantastic

Thanks for watching!
Absolutely surprised you didn’t take a bite
When the camera was off ... 😁
I'll be right over
As i recall on Tuesdays you got 5 for a dollar, recently married we ate there every Tuesday
If you’re from Indiana I have a copy cat recipe request. PIZZA KING pizza. Great video
Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching!
Onions and coleslaw
Perfect for foot-long dogs & buns.
Look great, but have you ever tried substituting broth or stock in place of the water?
I have not. I'd be interested in the difference to the taste though.
It was the coney fries that I liked! Do they have those in the USA? The Canadian operation dropped the coney fries and the whistle dog!🙁
Haven't seen an A&W in decades, but places like Sonic Drive-in have chili-cheese fries, if that's what you mean. They are fantastic.
Great sauce. A&W also has a meatless red sauce. Do you have a copycat recipe for it? I'm trying to make it but not having any luck.👍
I don't have one, but it's definitely something to work on. Thanks for the idea and for watching!
@@catscratchkitchen I've been trying but just can't get it. Missing something 👍
I remember 25 cent coney dog Wednesdays
Wish it was back, right??
Thanks for watching!!
It’s pretty much chili, cumin, chili powder, tomato sauce, main ingredients in chili. I know I have been making it for 50yrs. Nothing wrong with your recipe, but it doesn’t look like a sauce, it’s chili, but a very good one. Some like beans in it or not.
Did you accidentally reverse the tomato sauce and tomato paste in the recipe? It just looked like you put a lot more sauce than you did paste. Thank you for sharing the recipe. I will give this one a try for sure!
Nope, it may appear that way to you, but it's in the right order. Cup and a half of paste and a cup of sauce.
@@catscratchkitchen - cool. I just thought I would check. It just looked a little odd to me on the video. Thanks for sharing it!
My pleasure, I was happy to go back and check the video to make sure...you never know...😊
What doees A+W stand for thought it was rootbeer
A&W brand famous for it's root beer, but also a fast food restaurant known for it's iconic coney dogs and hamburgers.
A & W stands for Allen & Wright.
@@chenzocosimo3250
Thanks ! I've wondered about that myself all these years !
YUMMY 😋 CONEY HOTDOG LOVELY THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching!
Wouldn't using two cups of tomato juice be better than using two of water?
It might work out ok. I wanted to keep the cost down, do I didn't try it.
If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out.
Thanks for watching!
That’s a lot of cumin!
Perfect!
Sadly The way Our Local AW has gone... Follow this advice. MAKE IT AT HOME!!!!!
What killed A and W in States was stopping the use of the bear. Even here in Canada their popularity gone down. Barejy see them advertise on TV if at all anymore. Send coupons in mail but thats about it. I miss the bear!!!
I do remember the bear!
We have an A&W here in Middlebury, VT.
Looks great except for the cheese!
USE BEEF BROTH INSTEAD OF WATER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE
Good idea. Thanks for watching!
Don't take a yt comment section personally. Some just comment for the purpose of tearing someone down.
No worries, thanks for the comment. Thanks for watching!
THIS IS THE KIND OF "HOT DOG SAUCE" i have been lookin for. Something not thin, like most of them out there. Looks rich and delicious. I will try this one out for sure! Thanx We loved A&W growing up,now there is only SONIC-NOT EVEN THE SAME! And wasteful paper products that don't breakdown in the landfills for years because of their coatings. OH and the GLASS FROSTED MUGS! I ACTUALLY HAVE ONE FROM YEARS AGO ! Now I am hungry! Gotta try this out! OH NOW SUBBED TOO!
I still have my a&w BABY root beer mug ! 😂
Sonic's chili dogs are better than A&W chili dogs.
I worked for an A&W for years this is not the authentic recipe I know. I don't share it, it's a company secret.
Just a copycat, never meant to be the authentic recipe.
@@catscratchkitchen It sounds good either way, your's is probably 100% better, richer, better quality ingredients.
@1besieged Thanks. I appreciate the comments and thanks so much for watching!
Went to A&W recently. Sauce tasted like it was out of a can. Not good at all.
It must be me being Scottish… but why do Americans take ground BEEF, and call it HAMburger ?🤔
lol...good question!
I’m American and i have always thought it was weird
Hamburgh steak burgers were supposedly named after Hamburg, Germany, in the 1880's or before.. It became widely popular after being featured at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
Because that is what it is skippy
way too much tomato !!!
You'd be surprised...after reducing, it's just right.
Perfect amount
Cant help noticing that you didn't even ATTEMPT to eat that. Way to much sauce!
Actually I ate one with
my son, just like that. For me, the sauce was just right.
Ya gotta have lots of sauce - 'specially sauce like this !
Yummo !
I can't help noticing that you are a. Whiner.... Go buy so cheese to go with your whin
You can't eat a chili dog without a lot of napkins! And that's the fun! So I wouldn't want to eat on camera either!
I worked at an A&W when I was 16 and our coney sauce was made for us by a company called ElRay foods in St Louis. We had coney day on Tuesday they were 44 cents each.
Why does everyone put onions in everything? Not everyone likes them
Maybe just use some onion powder? It is for the flavor. My husband says the same thing about celery and mushrooms
Not everyone, but most do. Just don't add them to your sauce.
You are in the minority.... Deal with it. 😂😂😂😂
