The idea of Real simon shooting himself to immediately transition into a chapter called " my life ends here" just blows me away. Not only by the fact that the music gives me chills, but the fact that you have to fight yourself. it's just weird as hell but so cool.
To me, Carcass represents Simon's wheelchair and how it bounds him. The chains that suspend Carc in the air represent how trapped he is in the wheelchair with seemingly no way to get out. He thinks part of the reason that Sophie doesn't love him is because of how he's bound in the wheelchair, which sortof ties back to the end of the game when Simon says he knows that he's burdening Sophie. The thing that I don't think makes sense in this theory is how he already confessed his feelings for her, but that's still what I see Carcass as representing.
It makes sense because this scene lets you decide who is to blame for her rejection of Simon. If you fight Carcass, it means that Book Simon blames Simon, or at least his wheelchair, for what happened. He even accuses the monster of being responsible for what happened to Sophie. Otherwise, Book Simon blames Sophie, which ultimately leads to Simon killing her. I believe that Carcass is how Simon sees himself - a barely-living pathetic lump of flesh, trapped in a mobile metal cage, just a burden to everyone else. Carcass is a manifestation of Simon's self-loathing.
6 years later, but I agree. To me, Carcass represents Simon's fear of forever being stuck in a wheelchair, unable to live his life, much like a carcass. That's why beating Carcass is the first step to the good ending. Book Simon killing Carcass is real Simon overcoming those feelings. He already confessed to Sophie before the accident and she rejected him, but perhaps he blames being stuck in a wheelchair for why she continues to reject him. EDIT: Fixed some things.
This would only make sense for the endings where he killed himself. The ending where he has a bout of psychosis and kills the police, there was no gunshot before the police arrived.

I love the idea of Simon writing a good ending for himself. I think it's the most beautiful metaphor for finding peace with your past and inner demons. There will always be things we can't control in our life. However, we can still have a good ending, even if it's just for yourself.
I feel like every single normal enemy has a bit of anxiety printed on them, but the chainsaw man is the full reflection of it. They move without build up, are fast and keep you on your toes.
I know this video is month old and this been maybe mentioned already, but I find the boat part very symbolic to Simon being paraplegic and using his arms, not legs, to get across.
What really pisses me off the most is that there’s no games similar to this I mean come on this game is a masterpiece but I just can’t find any horror games that are on this level of amazing can anyone actually recommend a game similar to this one
The Silent Hill games (specifically the first three). They all have the same sort of thing that Cry Of Fear has where the monsters are all symbolic manifestations of the protagonists' inner demons and shit. I'm 100% Cry Of Fear was heavily inspired by those games.
Amnesia The Dark Descent is still like the best horror game I could possibly recommend if you have not played it. If you want something that strictly controls and feels a little more like this game, then I recommend the Penumbra series. Specifically just Black Plague if you only have time for one.
Watching Pyrocinical's video about this game made me think of you Bate. A shame you never got the recognition you deserved. I hope you are successful in your current endeavors.
Pyros video is more of a review than an analysis like this, pyros video is better if you want a good review because it covers everything quite well. this is good if you just want a good analysis of the story
@@dariushajnala5562 that seems a little harsh as pyro tends to explore the game mechanics and level design far more than this video and the editing is pretty good.. im not a big fan of his out side of his video essays on games and this video is also very well done... plus pyros video led me here

Sawrunner symbolizing anxiety makes perfect sense EDIT: it makes sense because once us the player encounters him,we panic and we sprint away letting Simon run out of stamina and then letting sawrunner kill him, never thought of him being that,I always thought sawrunner was Simons anger.
I think that maybe each significant enemy (Sawer, Mace, ect) Depict various emotions that Simon is feeling or that they symbolize prior events Like Mace for example, he could represent the car hitting him due to the strong 1-shot attack he has. Sawer would most likely be a representation of Simon feeling stabbed in the back by that car/stranger for trusting him
SCP - 4126 Object Class: Euclid Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4126 is to be kept in a padded cell with both arms bound to prevent further writings. Description: SCP - 4126 is a young, paraplegic man in his early 20s who suffers from severe depression and anxiety. Throughout most of his teenage life, SCP-4126 has suffered from severe depression and was prone to nervous breakdowns well before a tragic car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. While adjusting to his new life, SCP-4126's psychologist; Dr. Purnell, advised him to write a book about his thoughts and experiences while dealing with depression, this book is hereby referred to as SCP-4126-1. As SCP-4126 wrote SCP-4126-1, a pocket dimension similar to SCP-106 was created, where everything written onto the book was manifested through hideous monsters and nightmarish settings. Every monster was unique in that each one was a metaphorical manifestation of his disturbed mental state. As long as the book remains intact, this nightmarish dimension still exists.
You managed to turn this from a Horror game into a Disturbing Documentary portraying the life of Simon and how he felt during his life. Thank you, also I miss you ;-; but I hope you're doing well :D
Maybe Simon wrote about mace to depict how hard the initial crash felt to him. Seeing as you can see mace slowly raise his weapon, but if it connects it leaves you devastated.
It makes too much fucking sense that Sawrunner is meant to be anxiety. As someone that struggles with it, I've often said similar words to oncoming attacks. It's like a bullet to the brain - fast, you don't always see it coming, and it hits like a train.
In the 'good ending' I remember he mentioned that Sophie has a new friend, 'one that's there for her/treats her right'. Maybe his big confession was really a last ditch attempt to win her back after maybe he did something wrong and it was bad enough that she decided to stop associating with him? Because I noticed he was chasing her down the street as she was walking away. If you think about it you don't tell someone to fuck off after they say they love you unless you're mad at them.

This game really seems like a terrifying novel. It tells you the inner purpose of most of simon's actions and thoughts. It is crazy to see what represents what in his story and his life.
the book simon fight is very poetic imo. he was paralyzed waist down but still persevered against his inner darkness where he was shot a lot of time and even got beaten but he never give up (notice how real simon hp endured even when he got fucked with)

Something that I would like to handle more in depth is Simon's family relationship. I mean, when we started the game we got a message from Simon's mother asking where he is and what she is worried about. And Simon's journey ends when you arrive at what appeared to be his home before isolating himself in his apartment. Simon is concerned about seeing his mother, hoping that she is well, this means that at least he had a mother who cared about him and that evidently she was not going to leave him when he became paraplegic; It was good to know more about this context. And it could have been something as simple as the Cellular messages, that is to say, he continued receiving messages from his mother to the point that he lost his cell phone.
I agree. I wish they gave some kind of explanation as to why he was inquiring about where his mother was. I think the first text from mom is part of his story, like where he took a walk in the middle of the night to get the dark thoughts out of his head and then got hit by a car, so his mom was probably concerned about why he was out so late/where he was, and maybe a mother's intuition that something bad might have happened to him (him getting hit by the car). But when he's looking for his mom at the end, I'm not sure. Maybe like in his state of psychosis, he reverted to a childlike state where he just wanted his mom.
A little late and all, but I couldn't help thinking about the gunfight between Pernel and Simon. If you trusted Pernel, you noted the fight could mean defeating the dark thoughts about the doctor. But I wonder if it might instead indicate some kind of massive fight that broke out between the two after Simon realized the book was only hurting him.
one of my favorite horror games of all time that would even rival silent hill and resident evil (love both SH and RE) it just goes to show you how real and brutal depression can be and sometimes the scariest thing in this world is ourselves.
This video gave me some seriously nostalgic vibes. Lots of stressful days in high school were made better by staying up and watching TH-camrs play/talk about scary games or paranormal stories. I love how passionate and into it you were. Gained yourself a new subscriber!
I think the doctor giving ammo and lighting the way is symbolic of him helping Simon through his inner demons, and giving him meds and advice, allowing him to have his situation illuminated and be able to fight his problems and struggles.
All of this was amazingly executed, but from 35:02... Tears rolled down, man. Brilliantly handled... And ended. You could have ended with the sorrowful endings, but you didn't. You ended it, not optimistic (Well yeah sorta) but mostly realistic corresponding with the ending. Simon, instead of ignoring his issues -- Chose to face them head on, and that forged him into something stronger -- So strong that he defeated his evil self that caused him grief, and prevented him from suicide. What I mean, he didn't go through so many hardships without learning, they weren't for nothing. Sure, not dealing with the worst issues you have in your life might hurt less than facing them head on, but they would remain inside of you, unchecked. For what? Extra uncertainty in your mind? Something more to be worried about? That will just hurt you on the long term FAR MORE than it would on the short one. Your video made me sympathize with Simon, and realize what a genius game Cry of Fear truly is.
this game always held a special place, batesee was always one of if not my fav youtuber..... now that i survived my lowest point and just got out of the psych ward..... it means so so much more

This was such an excellent video to watch and made me remember how much this game meant to me. Thanks for the analysis, and thank you to Team Psyskallar and the Cry of Fear forums for all the good times.
This was beautiful , your steady calming voice leading trough broken pieces of his mind helping him and us find a better way out of that situation showing that there can be endings to every story with a hell hole filled with people that want to hurt you or the peaceful place where you feel loved and welcome . I played about half way though the game. College caught up and I had forgotten about it. I never noticed how much of everything connects to his condition. The people who made this game are incredible
Interesting, very interesting indeed, but I think you missed the mark by a whole lot, you see, hello kitty simon is the actual, true main character, and you have to work towards unlocking him because, surprise surprise, the ending where he is happy is because of how watching hello kitty made him find peace in his life, which obviously led to him watching anime and ultimately trying to recreate a scene, therefore killing the police officers... I was gonna write that as a joke, but it unfortunately makes sense in a twisted and bizarre way, anyway, thank you so much for this video, it was a saving point on a month where the content on youtube seems to be pure garbage, very well worded, researched and edited, and about the 6k words, I know your pain.
Hello Kitty alternate universe is best universe ._. That's very flattering to hear. Thank you very much! I'm glad I could help out :) I admire anyone who does big assignments...
I had been watching Batesee regularly when he was active, and I vividly remember the day he retired. Today, I found this video again, and hearing that outro one more time... It literally brought me to tears. I hope Batesee is doing well, wherever he may be now.
Well explained, I didn’t quite understand the story at first but I got the ending where I fight book Simon, carcass however when I saw that Sophie was dead in the book one I was sad that it happened but was furiously angry when I found out that the carcass was part of it, I killed the carcass due to how much anger I had for it and with the doctor, I didn’t quite trust him but I helped him get a gun although it just resulted in him shooting me in the arm just like if you would not trust him but now I finally understand the story of all the nightmares that haunted Simon knowing the car crash and before it.
might be not the best animation or polished one, but god damn the story and how the game presented was absolutely amazing, real or not this happen in real life to someone they're great at making this
Dude... You're so talented. I love how the effort you've put Into this series, love hearing your theories, speculations ect... Sorry for being so sappy but thanks for making sense of the game as I really didn't get it all that much. Hope all is good :D
Sometimes, its just astonishing how deep and relatable fictional characters may be... I cant help, but drawing parallels from Simon's life to mine every time I relplay the game or watch similar analytical videos on Cry Of Fear.
Excellent analysis - greatly helped highlight some very reasonable interpretations of some of the events that occur in the game. And your playthrough was great, too. Very well done! -- Personally, when I think of video games as an art form, or I think about people questioning video games' value, games like Cry of Fear are what spring to mind. These types of games that describe some aspects of the human experience - dark ones, mind - not only increase awareness of these issues, but also to help illustrate what burdens they are. Of course, a game need not pursue dark subject matter to be considered art, but I believe stuff like this sincerely helps in illuminating very real issues - something which is beautiful, even if the game itself is horrifying. I'm pretty certain Cry of Fear has helped shape how I view depression, in at least a few ways. To any mature enough, I'd recommend at least watching a playthrough of this, if you've yet to. Not all people learn the same way, and a creative experience such as this (rather than a written story or a purely visual tale - good though those may be!) may be quite helpful. Plus, well, it is entertaining to watch Let's Players get spooked. :)
The only reason I can think of mace being in the story, is that it's a representation of Simon trying to deal with his disabilities. The amount of bandages he's covered in, and the giant mace slowing him down must do nothing but hinder him. Plus you also walk on a step above the water to kill him and avoid damage. It's a random thought, but it's my only guess
I really love your work Batesee. SCP one was top notch and this one is no different. I honestly cant wait for the next one but take your time. No need to rush quality these vids are definitely worth the wait.
Im really glad I had no prior knowledge about this game before playing it for the first time.. It truly is an amazing (and scary) experience! Seeing this video mentioning the details and story parts I missed in my playthrough made it even more fascinating. Thank you for this.
As someone who takes a very high dose of Citalopram I never knew about all those side effects! I have researched it more and realized a lot of problems I have correlate to the side effects of taking so much. Thank you for helping me discover(in a very odd location lol) what has been plaguing me for years.
I keep on rewatching this video and replaying this game. It always makes me want to choose the hard path for Simon, knowing it will lead him to a better end. A better end for him and a better end for the game. Then I remind myself how I always ran from the hard path, I closed myself away from the hard choices. After I played this game it made me realize that I need to fight like Simon did. That if I want to keep living, I'll have to shoot those creatures in my own head. The battle is always hard but if you put everything you have on the line - be sure that you will win.
Well if there was a sequel we CAN’T follow Simon because he’s already reached the end of his story. Both metaphorically and literally because in some endings he died.
This being an old horror game I could never force myself to finish I'm amazed by the detail and work in its narrative. Might have to try it again someday (with the lights on and a small medical team ready to calm me down). Thanks TeamPsyksallar for this gem! Love your writing for this too 6.5k words well written. Thanks and I hope you find an equally interesting topic to do something similar with!
Cry Of Fear, in my opinion, the greatest horror game to ever exist. It doesn't need good graphics, or fantastic gameplay. It just needs a good story, and they absolutely succeeded in humanizing Simon. To some extent its actually terrifying just how realistic this game is. Loneliness, depression, anxiety, suicide, mental illness, psychosis, despair. These are all things that no game developer would ever consider to base their game around, but here we are with Cry Of Fear, relating to lots of people that also deal with this stuff. It's fascinating, really is. Simon isnt just a video game character, he is us... All of us....
The Book Simon we kill isn’t BOOK Simon. It’s MIND Book Simon. BOOK Simon is enjoying a view somewhere. MIND Book Simon is full of lead with a sledgehammer next to his body.
I don't play scary games, they scare me, but i forced myself to play through Cry of Fear because watching gameplay clips its quality was apparent, but also it just kind of seemed like one of the best horror games, if i was going to play one it might as well be one of the best ones right? So from my perspective, where for a lot of people Silent Hill is the champion of the genre, Cry of Fear is my baseline.
If you can muster the courage to play just one more AMAZING horror game, I recommend Amnesia the Dark Descent. Or even SOMA or the Penumbra series if those are more your style. Frictional Games puts out insane quality horror games, and they are absolutely worth your time.
Well, both AoM and CoF are practically blatant tributes to the classic SH and RE games, which means that they indeed are the quintessential survival-horror titles even in this equation. @firestalker; Frictional's games have only gotten worse after Penumbra: Black Plague.
This is still the most informative, well-structured and overall the best in-depth video about Cry Of Fear’s story i’ve watched and I really enjoy how it is all presented. In a mature way, not unlike the game’s tone and I appreciate that a lot. Amazing video Batesee
this was one of the most entertaining video essays ive watched. I came back here just to get a grasp of it. I havent listened to many i was actually interested in a while. Sad that its over.
Beautifully done! One thing I wish would have been addressed though - the bloody bath tub. When playing as book Simon in the apartments, we find a dead man in a bloody bathtub with a key in it. I noticed in all of the endings where Simon kills himself, when the police are searching Simon's house, the cut scene shows the police search the bathroom. In every alternate ending where Simon takes Sophie's life along with his own, the bath tub is bloody. But in the ending where Simon kills only the doctor and himself, the bathtub is clean. Does this hint that Simon dismembered Sophie's body in his bathtub and disposed of her body before shooting himself at the table? He mentions in his suicide note that "he hopes her body is rotten when they find it" or something along those lines. The only thing that doesn't line up with my theory is that when book Simon gets the key out of the bath tub, it is a man that is dead in the bath tub, and he says something along the lines of "did he do this to himself?" (Obviously not), but why is the bath tub clean in the ending when Simon only kills the doctor and not Sophie, but bloody in the endings where he only kills Sophie and himself, and the ending where he kills the doctor, Sophie, and himself? Am I alone in pondering this detail?
I wanted to thank you for putting this together. This game somewhat influenced my own horrific tale of depression. This reminded me of what I've fought for and gone through to preserve my life, and I can't explain how much it means to hear another voice reminding me of just what happened. -Best of Luck, Happy New Year and with Loving Regards; Daniel Justin Bayless

Sawrunner symbolizing anxiety makes perfect sense

Official Freakazoid 2 aniexty and anger maybe
My therapist said that in general anger is basically anxiety past the point where you've become fed up with anxiety.
I think that maybe each significant enemy (Sawer, Mace, ect) Depict various emotions that Simon is feeling or that they symbolize prior events
Like Mace for example, he could represent the car hitting him due to the strong 1-shot attack he has.
Sawer would most likely be a representation of Simon feeling stabbed in the back by that car/stranger for trusting him

Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4126 is to be kept in a padded cell with both arms bound to prevent further writings.
As long as the book remains intact, this nightmarish dimension still exists.

sussy amogus
Maybe Simon wrote about mace to depict how hard the initial crash felt to him. Seeing as you can see mace slowly raise his weapon, but if it connects it leaves you devastated.
It makes too much fucking sense that Sawrunner is meant to be anxiety. As someone that struggles with it, I've often said similar words to oncoming attacks. It's like a bullet to the brain - fast, you don't always see it coming, and it hits like a train.
Plus there's a segment where Simon gasped right after a door is kicked in and the revving of a chainsaw is heard.

Fun fact - when your taking pictures at the start and you see a figure smash the mirror/window, that’s actually Simon’s old design
I heard the phone at the beginning and immediately thought “hey cousin let’s go bowling

Excellent analysis - greatly helped highlight some very reasonable interpretations of some of the events that occur in the game.
And your playthrough was great, too. Very well done!
--
Personally, when I think of video games as an art form, or I think about people questioning video games' value, games like Cry of Fear are what spring to mind.
This game has the best writing i’ve ever seen. And the touchy topic just makes it that much better and perfect suited in a horror game.
I remember when this was "2 weeks ago" as if it was yesterday... Bruh, I feel old
The only reason I can think of mace being in the story, is that it's a representation of Simon trying to deal with his disabilities. The amount of bandages he's covered in, and the giant mace slowing him down must do nothing but hinder him. Plus you also walk on a step above the water to kill him and avoid damage. It's a random thought, but it's my only guess
jesus christ that jumpscare was horrifying and funny at the sametime
I really love your work Batesee. SCP one was top notch and this one is no different. I honestly cant wait for the next one but take your time. No need to rush quality these vids are definitely worth the wait.

I really wish a sequel had been made. Maybe one day. Thank you for the video!
Well if there was a sequel we CAN’T follow Simon because he’s already reached the end of his story. Both metaphorically and literally because in some endings he died.

"maybe book simon's enjoying a view somewhere"
no he's full of lead with a sledgehammer next to his body
That's what I was thinking 😂
The Book Simon we kill isn’t BOOK Simon. It’s MIND Book Simon. BOOK Simon is enjoying a view somewhere. MIND Book Simon is full of lead with a sledgehammer next to his body.
@@xd_mystyyyyy wouldn't that be psychosis Simon?

Those are different bathtubs in different apartments

This game somewhat influenced my own horrific tale of depression.
This reminded me of what I've fought for and gone through to preserve my life, and I can't explain how much it means to hear another voice reminding me of just what happened.
