- The Professor has and never will be a diesel guy, but all the other guys were backed up and somehow it came into our St.Marys location which usually doesn't do diesels. We just don't have the space or the racks for it. So this Duramax came in with a no crank, no start condition. You'll learn some really simple but important tips on diagnosing an issue like this, and also something at the end that is vital to making sure you don't cost yourself a crappy phone call with the client later on. We hope you enjoy!

Your dog is always chill he knows he’s got it made in the shade
A lot of shops have pets, it seems. It seems to me that if the channel creator gets on the ground. The pet will invariably follow! Maybe it's thinking some treats are stored somewhere ?
I feel your pain Sherwood I’m 49 and struggle to get under that stuff l had a bmw trans cooler line I figured I’d just do it on my back 😂 big mistake. Tink steals the show btw. Thanks for sharing.. Jay
That looks like a Denso starter. We used to call this, "click, no crank." The contacts in the solenoid housing burn to the point where they can't provide enough current through the starter windings. I used to get those replacement contacts and install them on the bench, and return the starter to service.
Is it common to test a starter when your battery has only 12.1 volts?
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2ywI’m surprised you’re not getting on him for checking the oil first too.
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw In a failure mode situation, yes. He's looking for engagement and rotation. If the contacts in the solenoid fail there will be no rotation. 12.1 volts is more than enough to test for function.
@@arthouston7361 I'm only a 25 year ASE Master tech with L1.....what would I know. I've only been running my own shop for 11 years...don't know nothing for sure.
@@arthouston7361100% agree. The non crank issue is clearly the starter and not a battery voltage problem. An engine will turn over even down to 11v and he tested it right at the starter under load and it was well above that.
OMG love that dog of yours ! He wants to right in your business or apparently HE does work on diesels ! LOL
I "retired" in July of 2000 with four ASE Master certs and something they called "World Class Technician." I had never heard of it, but because of those certs, along with L1 and L2, I apparently qualified for it. Who knew. I was 48 years old then, and I went off to fly jets. While doing that, I re-wrote ASE study books for the company that published the monthly auto repair magazines. I didn't think I was too old for service, but the industry was not going to pay guys like me for what I could do. They wanted cheap guys. That was the beginning of this big industry crisis they talk about now. I thought about starting my own shop, but the investment was too high, and the chance of success too low. It's good to see that you could make a go of it.
37 YEARS LATER ONE THING IVE FOUND (ASE MEANS YOU CAN READ A BOOK/TEST)HANDS ON IS THE KEY THIS IS KNOWLEDGE IS ACQUIRED
@@MarkVanTasell Actually, ASE means that you can imagine a situation, you can intellectualize the problem, and you can create a solution, all before you even pick up a scope. Answeing the questions demonstrates an understanding of diagnostic dynamics.
Great presentation Sherwood. Question? Are you planing on showing this video to the class you are going to be teaching? Oh you up and down fairly well. So I do not think you are getting too old. Thanks for posting.
Throughly enjoyed watching and learning. Thanks guys!
Haha, I'm probably in the same boat and getting too old for climbing up and under vehicles!😅
I know right it’s still fun! Oh my back sh*!t😂
I have the hook. It is bulky, but in certain circumstances it really works great. I like the ability to see current when activating a component
I also have a hook. Yes it is bulky. I use it most for parastic draw testing Hook it up shut off speaker put it on 60 amp breaker and latch mode put in power plus. Put bananna connector on instead of tip. Hook to disconnected battery ground cable and push ground to latch. Will measure amps being drawn. Leaves your fluke free.
Sweet another video! Hi from England!
We are trying to do them more regularly here lately! We would love to consistently have 3 per week at some point. Thanks for the support!
@theroyaltyautoservice quick question, when measuring the voltage drop, is that the same principle as load testing the main cable with a bulb to see if the cable can hold load?
Love the hook. I believe its been discontinued for a number of years now. Too many other options that are cheaper, but not as quality
@@RideBikes_Walkplacesfor the most part yes but the meter will give you an exact number
@marlinyoung1606 is he measuring in volts? I always thought you tested for volts, then load test tge circuit afterwards as there can be voltage there, but the cable could still not carry load.
I just fixed a no start, no click, no crank on my 08 lmm. Bought a new starter, relay and fuse. Put the new starter, relay and fuse in. Same issue and blew a $7 fuse. Pulled the purple trigger wire from the solenoid all the way out to the fuse box to inspect it. Found it had rubbed the insulation off and was grounding on the hard line running to the steering box.
AESWAVE make some amazing leads for your multimeter or scopes, pick your length, style banana plugs or bnc. Highly recommend them. Thanks for the great videos
Lisle tools makes a duramax crank socket and flywheel holder kit not super expensive , I bought one used it 2 times ,
Made mine own leads even made a video on it . They work great with double banana jacks. Great video 👊🏻
I’ve been making a lot of my leads. If you loosely tie your leads together at the meter with an over knot they won’t twist up.
Sir, where would I be able to get some of those really long leads? Sometimes the ones that came with my fluke are too short.
I’m really impressed by your channel and would like to consider your shop if I need some serious work done on my car in the future. Are you the Royalty Auto Service in Kingsland, GA or in St. Mary’s, GA? Or both?
As one of those "diesel guys", put a socket on the alternator and turn it that way
If you can fix a gas you can fix a diesel worked on the same principal both have a crank sensor and a cam sensor and they both have a high pressure pump and sensors only thing missing are spark plugs all you need is compression and when cold glow plugs give the starter a smack test it should crank
Right, I would try a known good crank sensor before condemning the discharged batteries.....no crank signal then no crank right?
It has 2 batteries in it. One could be bad and the other good? Should i check both batteries? Disconnect one to get a true reading on both? Your thoughts? Thank You. I enjoy your knowledge , videos and expertise!
Batteries in parallel need to be disconnected prior to testing.
Only thing I would have done differently is jump the starter posts. This bypasses the solenoid. But that thing looked tough to turn over by hand.
New guys always forget to turn the engine to check if it’s seized.
No, new guys do not realize there are 2 batteries in a diesel and that a weak battery is one that measures at 12 volts........it should be 12.6 volts......lost faith in this guy in this one.
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw So it was .6 Volts less than full, what are you suggesting should have been done?
@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw I was thinking the same thing. At 12 volts the batteries are only at 50% charge, which is pretty much dead for lead acid.
@@80SWoods Stick to plug in vehicles bud, they are made for simple people like you.
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw Good one, thanks for contributing.
AESwave has many options of leads from short to very long with the male and female banana jacks
When my starter died I was like shit. It lasted over 180,000 miles!😊
That is funny. Using a volt meter to test the voltage of a power probe. I use a power probe all the time, better than a multimeter. Starter click no voltage drop motor not locked up.
Seems like this guy is an actor, and a bad one.

@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw Idiot comments like this are why I usually regret reading through them.
@@80SWoods You don't know much about cars do you?
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw I suggest you learn about voltage drop under load. This truck passed the test. It wasn’t the middle of winter, so if a truck won’t start at 12+ volts using the tests he used, it’s a bad starter. Even if it did start while jumping, would you send the customer down the road knowing that it’s going to leave him stranded when the battery was low? 12volts is well more than enough to turn over a vehicle. Leave the diagnosing to the pros like Sherwood.
I don’t think the PP hook is sold anymore. The hook will display battery voltage AND tip voltage at the same time making voltage drop testing convenient
I'm 65 and still climb under vehicles of all kinds. Don't work for anyone, just do it for family and friends.
If that engine was locked up you’d have voltage drop and TONS of heat on the cable and starter.
That assumes that the starter motor is actually getting power. Seeing zero voltage drop at the motor, leads me to believe the solenoid contacts are damaged.
If the motor was locked up, you would see a larger voltage drop when cranking.
Couldn’t you put an amp clamp around the battery wire at starter and check amps to see if it’s locked up or not
If it is locked up, the voltage drop should be high when trying to crank.
I rarely have luck knocking on the starter on any duramax.
The leads your asking about didnt come in your aes wave kit?
I think your dog is trying you tell about road kill, so don't get under there. ;-)
Fluke 88 best meter ever
Safety goggles please
Specially when u get under a car and look to up. Not only fly metals or fluid also dust
Lol you won't connect to the starter under there very easy. You can see it through the wheel well easier
If you reach out to Jorge at AES he can make you anything you need Sir!
Took way longer than it needed to be. I would have went to the starter relay and sent power to the 50 on the starter. Doesn't turn over? Either a bad starter, locked engine or broken wire. Next I check if engine turns. Turns? Order a starter. Next
Check if accessories are locked up
Can we all like these videos!!! Thanks
I make cables and meter parts all 14 gauge
Never heard anyone call a silinoid wire an exciter wire 🤔
👍👍👍👍
Tap on the solenoid…
Sherwood, Your getting to old for that shit. Another cracking informative video.
Why would you not just jump the starter with 12v from the power probe? It would show that the solenoid was bad and the motor wasn’t locked up?
12.1 volts is a very discharged battery.....I'm rather confused as to why you did not just try a jumper pack first. Many times I have had vehicles with marginal starters and the extra voltage from the jumper pack allowed me to at least start it with a few key cycles.
The starter is still bad if it won’t spin at all with 12.1 V.
@@80SWoods wrong.
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw Prove me wrong.
@@80SWoods Quick, with your vast knowledge please enlighten me on the number of cells in a 12v vehicle battery and the voltage of each cell on a full charged battery......no Googling either.

Amateurs. Let's be real. We only see these trucks when it's raining and the contractors can't work. You try the jump box, then you tap the starter. Not kill it but tap it. If that doesn't find the problem wait for a dry day and follow the professor.
