This was the perfect video for getting started on my first roast. Thanks for taking the time to create this set of videos

After 180 roasts with my Hottop using Artisan I finally tried an automated roast based on a roast profile, thanks to this video. My first attempt didn't work except for ejecting the beans since I didn't have the alarms set properly. I made the necessary changes and was really happy to see the roaster changing the heat and fan settings along the way. Thank you!

This is so cool. Looking to buy my first Hottop and thought that the general consensus among users is that automation is not really that great. But this seems to be really good to be honest, makes it a lot easier to not forget steps. Do you generally recommend to create an automation like this before roasting some beans for the first time or do it manually initially based on senses and then automate when you have a profile that you like?

I prefer to roast manually when using s new bean and following the curve in Artisan. When I found a profile, I do the automation

thank you, so we basically we can make our own auto roast from artisan alarm?

I recognize this is an older video, but based on my limited knowledge of Artisan so far, for the part of alarms you said you don’t use, it would actually be useful - basically, in the “IF ALARM” you can add a conditional statement so that something won’t happen unless a previous alarm happened. So you could refer to Alarm 1, meaning ‘only do this alarm if Alarm 1 has already been triggered’. It just adds an additional level of This/Then statement but can refer to a previous step. I was hoping to find out how to actually have the power and air steps record their numeric value on the chart instead of just the graph of the heat and air. For example, if I turn my heat to 80, I want the graph to actually say 80. I’ve seen other Artisan graphs that show this but I cannot find the feature to turn it on. Thanks.

I don't see a benefit in the if conditions and therefore prefer to keep it simple. But of course everyone has their own workflow

Thank you for this tutorial. Question about a potential feature…is there a function in Artisan in which I can take a background roast that I have saved that is particularly good and, with the click of a button, convert that profile into alarms to be automated? All of the events, temperatures, actions, etc. that I manually inputted into a successful roast and saved as a profile/background, could then be automatically converted to alarms for automating that roast without having to go through a step by step setting of individual alarms? In the Bullet, there is a feature that allows one to load a profile and just click “replay” which automatically allows for automation of a profile, and I would love to see such a simple, easy to implement feature for the Hot Top. Alarms are a pain. Thank you!

You can go to Roast --> Properties --> Events and convert the events list into alarms.
I haven't been too successful with that though and prefer to set the events up from the scratch. Like that you understand the triggers and if you've done it once or twice it isn't that much pain anymore. But of course you can also take an alarms list created as above and the check it if all makes sense.

I tried converting my Hottop events to alarms a few weeks ago and found way more steps than I expected. Looking at my graph I saw why: the Hottop heat adjustment is in 1% steps from 0-100, so when I dialed the heat up or down I ended up with a boat-load of 1% entries that Artisan logged and I had to delete. Though I'm sure I could mostly avoid that by using faster dial spins, the odds are pretty good that I would still at times over-/under-shoot my desired settings thus leaving a logged mis-step or two, so I have decided to just create my events from scratch.
