Thanks soo much for doing this. I just ordered a preowned unit, because I wanted one of the original models. But I always disassemble my units to add new thermal paste and wipe out and re-grease the Disc Drive along any areas of high friction. So this video comes in handy
I just found a Xbox 360 with a copy of Grand theft Auto 3 inside the disc drive being broken so i found a $40 drive if only Amazon shipping was instant like their overwhelming price
My Xbox 360 does the exact same thing; "wouldn't read discs anymore and every time I put in a disc, it just says OPEN TRAY" (after saying "READING"). I hadn't used it for a couple years. The first day it seemed to work fine. The second day it wouldn't read (I thought I was doing something wrong). Finally, after "playing with it", it read the DVD disk and it worked fine. The third day again it wouldn't read. (So, I banged on it while it was booting the game.) The game loaded and it worked fine. I'm hoping that cleaning the laser will fix it. By the way "Ton of Ham", great videos. Thanks. I will use them when I perform the surgery.
Unfortunately you can't. For whatever frustrating reason, Microsoft married every disk drive with it's motherboard in the Xbox 360. If you put a disk drive from one 360 into another, it can read movies but not games. The reason being that the DVD key doesn't match, as it's on a different board. It's apparently possible to change the DVD key in the drive to match the new board but I've actually never seen a tutorial to do so anywhere.

My drive is just missing that front plate can you buy that and just click it in? As far as I know, everything works fine.
You can often find replacement parts on ebay, are you talking about the black cover piece or the chrome one? I probably even have one I can sell you.

You have to clean the laser inside of the disk drive. I used a cotton swab and non alcoholic water based cleaner

You cannot fix it. Xbox only works with the original drive or exactly the same drive with same firmware and dvd keys

I will replace my Disc Drive when I get the Torx Screw Drivers And My Older Xbox 360 That Red Ringed. And Try to Frankenstein my newer 360
