@@ChristopherHood-u6u I just did. If you do everything he does it works but I think I needed one of his suggestions not shown (I need lithium grease for the tray gears and track)
Hello friend, if you need to open the tray manually, there is a small slot on the left side that pushes a release that you can fit an extended paper clip to open the disc tray without having to plug it in. This is the same technique used when you want to open the tray even with all the components in place. Using the small slot hole on the side of the xbox. Thanks for the video btw! It helped me alot!
Well shit.... lmfao.... thanks friend!😅😅😅 BTW, if you have the same model as the 360 in this video, the little hole that @atacustompainting is talking about is surrounded by a yellow square, and inside that yellow square is a little hole. Just use a paper clip and it will "release the tension" and make it open. Now my disk drive opens up with no problem. I hadn't touched my 360 in over five years and the disk drive was acting like an ass. Anyway, thank you to @atacustompainting and the author of this video for the help.😎🤘🤘✌️
Real life-saver! Many other tutorials just tell us to "break" the plastic covers open! Managed to open and see the elastic band between the motor and a gear was missing (no thanks to my cat jamming the box...). Thanks mate!
Hi, my tray problem was not the same as yours, I used someone else's video to fix my tray problem. But the reason for my comment here is to thank you for the detailed step by step when stripping the XBOX360S. I value how you indicated problem areas and where to use caution not to break any of the retaining clips. Even tough my XBOX is out of warranty, using your method, I was able to strip and assemble my XBOX and keep the warranty sticker intact!!!! Thanks for sharing - because of you I saved money and my kids are able to use their favorite console once more.
I bought an XONEX just to replace this thing because my little brother tripped near the disc drive while it was open (which sent it out of alignment, luckily the tray didn't crack), then I found your video and literally fixed it by myself. Now it's up and running better than ever thanks to you!
Thanks so much for this very informative video, appreciate your knowledge so much! I was in the kitchen and our lil one year old messed with our xbox 360, i found this video first. Decode to try it, followed it step by step, after adjusting the dvd box and putting everything to place, i was praying that it will be working normal again, and it DID! What a miracle! I’ve never done this before! Thanks again!
You sir are a legend! My son in his wisdom decided to push the tray shut instead of using the button. Following this it is like new (as I cleaned it out whilst open!) Thank you for your assistance.
Thank you!!!!!! Came home from work and the wife tells me our 1 yr old has broke the Xbox. The tray was stuck open and a weird angle. Your video saved the day. Thank you!!
Liked and subscribed. I put my xbox 360 in my sons room after i bought my xbox one. I used it in there mainly as a dvd player for him. Then the tray stopped opening fully on its own and wouldn't play discs anymore. Used this video tonight to disassemble to unit and found 3 lego wheels stuffed inside the cd drive. System works perfectly again and is no longer in his room.
Hi Well I accidently broke the xbox. A safey panel dropped on the tray. I watched a few TH-cam videos and your one was great. I fixed from a very happy mum.
Very useful especially when you forget what was holding ur drive in snug (rubber grips) and also when u replace cable to drive and need to go back to original one.. u made my job much easier after seeing ur case open...ty
If anyones still having probs you need to lift the black dvd tray upwards. Be very careful not to exert too much force or break anything. You start at the back and try to lift the tray above the slots to free it. If you can get 2 at the back done on the same side you can slide the tray out. Worked for me anyway.
My roommate's parents just offered me their old Xbox 360 for free. I know the disc tray is jammed, and this should (hopefully) do the trick for fixing it. I bought some 360 games at a retail store a few years ago. Very cheap, but they aren't Xbox One compatible, so this fix would make the whole thing a steal.
Thanks for this! I had a sticky drive. I have never taken a console apart before and was terrified. Followed your instructions - got in - fixed the disk - got out with no problems. Have to say they go back together so much faster than they come apart!
Legend! Thank you so much for the good explanation. I did accidently hit my tray downwards while it was open. Therefore, my tray was stuck and could not be closed. Thanks by your tutorial, I was able to remove the tray and put it back in correctly. After hearing that ‘click’, I knew it was sitting right again. Thanks man, 5 stars for you! 😊
This video is the best guide I could've asked for, although you should have mentioned replacing the belt in the drive, eventually they can get old and lose their shape.
Thank you for your instructional video, I was afraid I was going to break any of the clips off the panels. The track wasn’t off for me, I had a disc that I didn’t realize that had sticker residue on the top and stuck to the top disc holder in the disc drive, preventing it from opening. Love your through and precise steps, thank you again!
After following this video my tray was still stuck. Check and see if the foam piece is the culprit. I cut and removed mine after manually ejecting the tray. Manual ejection can be done with something like a paperclip, stick it into the yellow hole that's under the grill opposite the side of the hard drive, as seen 2:32.
I don't own an xbox 360 but my friend has one and the same problem happened to him I watched ur video and I fixed his xbox he was really happy thank you I subbed.
Great video :) did the same repaire about a year ago and gave up on looking for a good guide online and worked it out myself. I wish this was around then, but it is nice to see I did it the right way :)
Thanks for the video you really helped me out. I thought my Xbox was headed for the graveyard. You have no idea how much you helped me out. Thanks a ton.
Thank you so much! I got an Xbox 360 for my dad to replace the one that died on him for Christmas and the tray didn't open so I watched your video and it helped out a lot!
Excellent tutorial, thanks for taking the time to put this together. I've now fixed my disc tray. So, all good... until my 1yr old daughter decides to break it again! 😀
Wow! thank you so much for your time to do this detailed helpful video.. i managed to open my xbox step by step as you showed! didn't break anything! i really fixed the CD tray that was stuck for a long time! finally! and put it back together like never been opened! lol! Thanks again.
Thank you. I used your information to fix a disk tray that I pulled out of alignment. I almost tossed the whole thing but I was able to get it to work because of you. Thanks again!
Finally a decent Xbox 360 teardown. Had no problems with disassembly. But unfortunately couldn't fix my disk tray. Something is still preventing the tray to open by itself.
Thanks for the video! This helped me fix a drive that was stuck open and jammed (thanks kids). Other videos instruct you to break parts when opening. This video is the right way to open an xbox slim 360. Thanks again!
You know what, just like with my Original Xbox, I'm going to replace the DVD drive altogether, Microsoft doesn't seem to have a good track record with reliable DVD drives. Thanks for showing us how to properly dismantle it, my good man.
Hello! Thank you for this detailed video. Followed it step by step and got our xbox 360 working again. So happy as now I can get back to guitar hero. Thank you and have a good one!
Absolutely the best video on how to fix this problem. I watched several videos and this is very detailed and accurate. Take your time and this will fix the problem.
Oh also, I'm sure you're probably aware by now or have been told.... you don't need to plug the drive back in to eject it, you need a pin and poke it into the hole on the side towards the front. Mine had a round yellow sticker highlighting the area. Sticking the pin in there will pop it open easy as.
USE THIS BEFORE TAKING XBOX APART...this little tip worked you have to feel around for a little lever type device.we had to slightly angle the paper clip downwards. if there is a disk in the player you will feel this and will have to alter your angle slightly more.
AMAZING VIDEO! So comprehensive and detailed. And thank you for the humor at 12:56 - "case dismissed!" 😆 I was cracking up and definitely needed a laugh during this process. Thank you!!!
I was going to fix my Xbox using this method, but I didn't have to. I kinda dropped it sadly and that apparently fixed it the tray works properly surprisingly
13:35 I can't figure out this part. My disc tray isn't just having trouble opening sometimes, it's just completely physically stuck. It won't slide any further than about half an inch before being unable to progress. It can't close, and it can't open either. Help?
It took me a min with the clips and I had some diagrams to look at while watching you. This video was very helpful however i couldn't get my drawer out the same way you did, i had to pop it out from the 6 clips holding it in place. Your video got me to that point so thank you.
great video, only thing that was not there was lining up the arrow on the big gear to point backwards before you put it back on the track. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the help! I had trouble getting the front of it off the way you did. I simply unscrewed the back first and the front basically fell off! But other than that you were a ton of help. Thanks again!

+MrBuck295 Thank you for the feedback. I really don't see what people have to force cases open and break things. The only thing I missed demonstrating was how to open the DVD tray manually with a paper clip. There's actually a small hole for that as well on the side of the case with a yellow ring. You can see it at 2m 41sec
Great video, however what do you do if the tray is stuck to where it only comes out about an inch or so and closes but not all the way and connecting the electronics has no effect? I looked at the video at 12:10 hoping it was the limiter switch and the switch appears to be working.
Your video was bliblically useful!!! thanks a million mate... guess what? I found a shooting duckling which my 2 years old daughter placed on the tray... guess I have found the YDOD (Yellow Duck of Death) thanks again man (y)
NOTE: at-least in my case with the metal frame, Its not just the retaining clips because there's ( 2:45) multiple indentations where there's welded plastic that made it almost really hard to open and I there's no workaround aside from breakthing those open (Not The Clips Themselves!)
Thank you so much. The video was very helpful and I loved the step by step process. I've got ours working again. Kids gotta love them. My 8 yr old I thought broke it. So thanks again.
THANK YOU, right to the point! got a free 360 E, which looks like it has the same drive. looks like someone before me couldn't figure it out, even after opening it themselves. So they took the hard drive and left it to die xD
My drive opens an inch and no more. I have no idea what the limit switch is. I went back to 12:10 and you make no mention of it. I'm all torn apart and stuck...just like my drive. Help please.
Hi Quinelle, there's a small hole on the side where you can insert a stiff paperclip to manually open the tray. Here's Microsoft's own tutorial on this topic - support.xbox.com/en-AU/xbox-360/console/manually-eject-disc

So... After transport from my mom's house, I plugged mine in and tried to open the tray (Which worked perfectly fine before we moved it. This is pretty much a brand new console too) and now at my dad's house it won't open at all. Like, AT. ALL. I can hear a kind of noise akin to the initial tray-open noise, but it just stops at that and the tray itself doesn't seem to move at all. The track I assume is fine, but it sounds like something is trying to move the tray forward and the tray won't budge. I don't know what to do, but opening it up seems like a good idea. Idk but I'll update when/if I can fix it.
hello, im tring to fix my xbox 360 S disk tray not wanting to come out fully, i have dissesambled the hole console and tied to make the disk tray come out, but it wont
