Guys, keep in mind, when you mess around with a laser's voltage, do it only with a multimeter to understand exactly how it does change, and you should know what disc drive's brand you're fixing because they are not the same, having different voltage range.

I've been trying to fix my stupid disk tray for a while now but no such luck. I've cleaned the laser multiple time, no luck still. So I was a little bit iffy at first about the laser screws but at the same time it was already not recognizing my disks so I couldn't really make it any worse. So I did the quarter turn and bam! It fixed it! I can't explain how grateful I am to you for posting this. I followed everything you did and my problem was fixed and you and your video were the solution to my problem :) Thank you so much! A very big thank you for your tutorial. Once I opened the DVD drive I noticed the laser mechanism pushed all the way back. I re-positioned it closer, cleaned it and no longer am experiencing the 'Open Tray' issue. Kudos sir!

Holy crap! thank you so much. believe it or not, it was the left screw on the laser turning it a quarter turn to left that fixed it. crazy how something so tiny can screw up an xbox so bad. i appreciate ur post. saved me serious cash

Hey man, i know this video is old, but looking for maybe a fix for another common annoyance with the x360. My drive works fine when the console is horizontal, but if i stand it vertically it's plagued with the open tray notification and the drivetray will not open either.
What do you think the issue could be here?
My Philips liteon disc magnet is the problem, I removed the top cover and just had the magnet on top of the disc and it won't read. I placed another disc magnet with the metal balls in it and it will read every time. What do you suggest I can use as a perment fix?

I'm amazed!! This truely worked. Took apart my jasper 360 and lite-on dvd drive and cleaned laser lens with alcohol and took out the spinning mechanism and lubricated it as described in this video. When i cleaned laser lens, I pulled up a whole lot of yellowish stuff off of it and it soaked into the q-tip. Put back together and tested all 6 games that the Open tray error was occuring on and they all loaded with NO problems three times in a row. Thank you durhamazhogan for this video. U just saved me $50 and a whole lot of soldering headaches. This truely worked for me. A++++++++++++++ homie!!

Hi, I hope you can help me. My problem is that I moved the screws that defined the level of the laser, so I don't know what is the correct adjust of that screws (the three).

I've got a benQ drive with open tray error. After cleaning the laser and marking the screw positions with a sharpie i turned the left screw 1/4 turn ccw... SUCCESS!!! Thank you sir!

Hey, does the laser move when you put the disc in to try and read it or does it stay where it is? If you have replaced the laser and it only works for a while it may be the drive or even the motor that moves the laser. You just want to hope its not the motherboard.

One problem Ive found with my DVD drive is that the spinner is extremely stiff. I put WD 40 in the 2 holes that you noted but it only slightly loosened it up. Is there another more effective way to get it to spin better?
dude you are awesome!!! i never thought i could fix it until you came along and saved the day!!! but it was a little bit more tricky than just turning the screw and its done, i had to kinda play with both screws and test, then turn a hair more left or right, but the turn deffinatly stayed to the left otherwise i got the jackhammer noise or some crap like it did before. but thanks, it works great now!! you saved me over 60 bucks or so! ffl man.. ffl
I did all this and the laser was the problem it fixed it but when I put it all back together it got all messed up again so im lost
After some playing around (and reckless pot tweaking) I realized my problem was a sticky motor and WD40 solved it. The next day I was having issue installing a game so I figured maybe my tweaking caused an issue. So I got a proper multitool and measured it to 5k~ ohms on the left and 800~ ohms on the right. Now it pretends as though there's no CD at all and spins roughly a quarter turn before quitting. When I remove the CD, it'll spin a good two or three rotations. Evening when setting to unreasonable numbers tweaked, it behaves like this. The laser turns on at a good brightness, the motor spins with gusto. Is the laser not reading or is my PCB shoot? I've detached the laser cable to see how it behaves and it is similar so I suspect funky laser. Any advice would help.
DO NOT use rubbing alcahol. I've gone through 3 disc drives in the past 8 years. It shows improvement short term, but still develops a film. If you must clean with some type of solvent, use saliva- it's crazy but works really well. It's a natural cleaner! Everything else on this video looks great.

Do you think that low voltage in the laser would cause gameplay issues? I fixed my 360 and popped in Gear of War, and the cutscenes seem to run at a fairly low frame rate. The rest of the game is alright.

i have the slim but i also have 3 more of the old white ones, and the slim one isn't working, do they have the same disk drive?
so I turned the left bronze screw about a half turn and my disc span for about 1-2 seconds longer (making me think I fixed it) but then stopped, and when I turn the screw anymore the disc goes back to only spinning a half second. Is there a sweet spot I should be searching for? or is my problem not with the laser? thanks for the help!!
Thank you for this vid! Mine just started doing this yesterday and i took it apart and cleaned the laser but that didnt work too well. It would load the game then say clean disk. When i get out of work i will try these fixes. Great vid
ok so im a bit of advance user... I've torn down my x box and cleaned everything, even the laser... it seems to be working but the disk magnet only spins one or two rpm.. and fix???

so I did most of your fixes. I ended on the loosening the laser screws and it still doesn't work, should I just replace my laser because everything seems to be working but I'm guessing this damn laser isn't reading disc and I even cleaned the stupid later too.
bro thank you so much, i had got a 10 year old xbox 360 phat edition and it has not played discs for about 10 years so my dad bought a new xbox 360 slim, i moved the lazer from the center to the middle of the disc and now it works after 10 years of the open disc error THANK YOU SO MUCH

I took my Xbox apart so I could try your fixes and for some reason when I put the magnet on top of the disk to test it, the magnet and the black plastic piece fly off the disk when it spins. No matter what I try, my disk doesn't spin normally. It'll spin for a second, the top magnet (and the connected plastic piece) flies off, the disk stops spinning, and it says open tray. It wasn't doing this before I opened my Xbox so I'm assuming I did something. It might've been a dumbass move on my part but I threw away that large sticker on top of the drive that conceals the magnet. Does the sticker hold the magnet in place so it doesn't fly off or is there something else going on?

Ok so my problem is that little magnet that holds the disc in place doesn't move out of the way when I press the eject button so the disc tray doesn't work at all, can you help me?
