Wax was a nightmare for our house. It's an old house, so it would often have clogging problems, whenever you had to plunge/unclog the toilet it was always an anxious event of "plunge, flush, and hope you don't see water flooding out of the base" because it seemed like there was 50/50 chance the wax seal was gonna break (my dad replaced 4 of them in a year, not sure why he kept using them. I assume it was the price; around $3 for wax vs a $10+ rubber). After he moved back to his home state and we inherited the house, the very first time one broke; I replaced it with rubber. That was about 2 years ago, haven't had any issues since.
Wax, if the toilet is wobbling it was never installed right to begin with. With all of the variables in flange height and toilet manufacturing differences, that rubber ring cannot possibly cover all the possibilities. And I only silicone the sides and front. Leave the back open so a back up or leak at the wax ring can be seen by the homeowner quickly. If you seal all the way around the water has no choice but to go under the tile and soak the subfloor, and it will be a soggy mess till they realize there is a problem.
I like using a wax bowl seal I work in an apartment complex and i have installed a lot of new American Standard Champion 4 toilets 1 other thing I used to seal the toilet is the Fernco toilet seal it actually sticks to the toilet and it has finger to hold it into the floor as far as caulking around them I don't the plumbers that come here said don't do it cause if your seal should start to leak we want to see it on the floor and not going down stairs....and 1 other I found out with that toilet is when I used that plastic wash mine leaked so I just use the metal one I have been using these now for quite some time and I bet I have maybe 5 clogs but that is what they put in it.
You have some good information, but the video could have been a couple minutes to get that message across. You had good info on Tools , Rubber gasket and end at making the seal. If it was a 2 minute video I would have subscribed to your channel
Yeah I know this is a year later and your probably slow or moved on from this work with what’s going on but seriously use you’re intelligence. I wear a full face eye and mouth respirator just for cutting wood. Yeah it’s a drag to always set back on every cut unless I keep it on for multiple cuts or fast cuts but seriously every part of our body appreciates the respect we give it and as humans we are taught “respect” is huge so respect you body even when others don’t and love what you do how YOU do it no matter what others say or do you feel best when you are you
I have a strong exhaust fan installed in my bathroom. A leakage of even 1mm in wax is enough to suck out some of the methane gas. Now I am opting for rubber, gonna see if thats any good.
man u r a life saver. currently trying to replace wax ring n we messed up 2 wax rings! 2!! I'm gonna go for rubber gasket instead n use the techniques u used.
It looked to me like every one of those flanges were too low, making your repairs short lived. A new flange installed at the proper level should always be recommended.
Here's a dilemma, put a new toilet in, toxic smell began as soon as it was installed. Thought I messed up, so I called a plumber. He removed the toilet, the seal was good, and the smell dissipated. He could smell it (later told me he didn't smell anything after he reinstalled the toilet, or that it could be the chalk I used near the tub) checked the flange and looked for holes. (No smell prior with old toilet). He found nothing. All the traps were being used. As soon as he left, the smell returned. A toxic, mildly burning your nose smell. He said he could come back and do a smoke test, but I'm completely confused as to how putting a toilet on the flange could increase a smell like this?
The smell is coming from (most likely) a compromised seal. Which is why the plumber is offering a smoke test. So it could be any of the traps in the washroom, or even vents in the washroom that aren’t sealed. Unfortunately it sounds like you’re going to need someone to do a thorough investigation…
@@Kennymolotov Thanks for the response. What "seal" did you mean? I tried to pry up the original metal flange, which was held down by 6 screws, because I needed to raise the flange after a tile job, and as I tried to pry up (only a quarter of an inch), I saw the whole white piping moving, realized it was attached, and immediately stopped and screwed it back into place. The plumber did a thorough check of the area, didn't see anything, checked the stack underneath in the garage for a water leak. Nothing. I also heavily chalked the bottom of the toilet, so I'm not sure how a seal near the flange could be letting out toxic gas. Since it's level, the wax ring is around the white pipe, I'm not sure sewer gas could be going around under the flange I messed with. This is a nightmare.
It’s a complicated answer. The toilet sits on a seal called a gasket. If the gasket is compromised it can be leaking fumes. But, also each fixture in the washroom has a P-Trap, each P-Trap carries a trap seal, if any of these seals are compromised fumes can be coming into the washroom. If the washroom has a floor drain, the floor drain can be losing its seal. If any of the vents in the wall are compromised, same story. A smoke test like the plumber suggested a lot of the time helps find the source of the compromised area.
I have this same problem. Replaced the seal with 3 different products, ( regular wax ring, thick wax ring, and Dano ring. Still have the problem. Did you find the problem with yours?
Thanks for this. I was wondering, can I use an old wax ring if it’s still halfway decent? It’s 1:30am and the stores are closed...really wanting to get this job done. I started it but then got called into to work some overtime at work. Thanks.
What brand rubber gasket are you using? I see a lot of non-wax solutions, but they're mostly all gimmicky with foam and strange things. Those seem nice and simple!
Hey itas0r! I’m not sure what brand they are, when I get to the supplier this week I will make sure to ask and get back to you. Thanks for your support!
To me it’s malpractice not to replace a multi turn valve with a new quarter turn supply valve. Then the rubber seal you use does not have a short skirt that would cover the flange area below, especially if some hack plumber uses spacers to elevate the flange but doesn’t seal the spacers. If the drain backs up, the waste liquid will be forced between the unsealed spacers. The fluid master Better Than Wax seal is rubber but has a skirt. Some plumbers are against a skirt because they say waste can accumulate on the skirt, but the skirt should hang down and not construct the drain opening.
This video could’ve been closer to 5-6 minutes (40%-50% shorter). Adding ridiculous bs to extend the time for what I assume TH-cam requirements (length of video, clicks, likes, views, subscribe, etc) to generate💲💵... Totally understand that. BUT I’m here for info on toilet repair. NOT a POV...driving down the highway, for fcks sake!
Josh! We’re sweating buckets here in Ontario...reached close to 104 degrees Fahrenheit this weekend...brooooo not used to this weather! Josh, do wax seals ever melt on you? Another plumber was saying he seen em melt.
Kenny Molotov almost right I think that they are the greatest and here is why people fill them up with all kinds of little trinkets and eventually they fall in the toilet and nobody wants to pick them out so they flush and that when we get a service call good times
I sure hope you didn’t leave those dam labels on the water lines! Almost as bad as a small throw pillow that has a warning label as long as the pillow. Please cut those off.
Just decided to start doing some plumbing related vlogs today. I’m pumped to become an apprentice. If you wanna check my first one out, give tips, advice, anything, it would be much appreciated. Love your stuff man! Keep it up!
we have a leak at the base of our toilet every 7 or 8 months ....have also switched to the rings that are not wax...thinking thatll fix the leak but still have a leak every several months .....plumbing should not be so complicayed to fix...we live in a small mobile home...any ideas?....thnx...
Hey joannas, I wouldn’t be able to tell unless I inspected it, but something I’ve run into in the past could be that the porcelain itself has a hairline fracture. And it can actually seal and unseal from time to time...
It you have a wobbly thrown or your floor/flange has sunk, it will cause leaks like that. It the base has any play in it because of the flange or floor, it will keep happening. A temporary halfarse fix is to shim the base to keep it from moving.
I just took up my main toilet because I was afraid the wax ring had failed. Turns out my 3 and 4 year old boys just can't hit the side of a barn. Would love to caulk around it but I'm afraid I won't know if it leaks in the future.
Wax but lately they melt with the heat I saw they were selling rubber at the supply store & they were selling like hot cakes but that's only in the summer cool video
@@Hazara26 I believe that’s a myth. I’ve installed many radiant floors. They do not get warm enough to melt the wax. Most of the time the heat source is around 2ft away from the flange as well. Just in front of the toilet, where you stand. The tile under the toilet never gets that warm.

I like the danco Hydro cap product and wax under it for double protection in case one fails, especially a 2 story house. Excellent product.
Took too long to get to the point. Looking for another video.
Holy *rap. I agree. Almost 5 minutes of...

Really appreciate you checking out all the content friend
Got a job as a plumber's apprentice and enrolled for classes. The master plumber I am working with does not use gloves or knee pads, but I do.
Wow! Huge congrats! And definitely keep it up with both gloves and knee pads. They will help with longevity!

Give rubber a try and let me know if it works!
our plumber just installed the rubber connector yesterday and I'm feeling confident that it will last and perform better over the years..
Does your Dad also make videos? I feel like his would be more actual how to, and less music, peeps, and showing you eat second breakfast. 😂
I used rubber gasket because it’s winter. Might not be hot enough for wax to set correctly
Dude this video took way too long. Advise- stop trying to be cool, emphasis on trying. And f you say peeps one more time I'm going to go crazy,
Petition to change it from 'peeps' to 'poops'.
In the immortal words of Kenny Molotov, "Don't judge me, peeps."

Keep it coming!!!!

I use Fluidmaster blue silicone seals. Spacer if flange is too low.
Hey Michael, I’ll definitely take a look into fluidmaster, Its always useful to have a couple of tricks up our sleeves. Thanks for the info!
Which spacer with the fluid? I seem to have a wax ring on mine. Is that not correct?
no one commented on the groovy tunes? What? Funky... and awesome tunes. Good choice. Something you made?
Thanks Jonathan, no I didn’t make the song myself, but it was a pretty funky toon when I found it !
I suppose both have advantages and disadvantages
Most definitely, I’ve been using wax way more lately and I’m enjoying it quite a bit!
seem to have a better seal for urinals using the rubber gasket. wax gaskets for toilets.

Cant believe all the hate in the comments, guess some people don't know what a Vlog is
Thanks for the advice. Good video.
Thanks!
Your logo should be a marshmallow baby chicken.
I feel like my toilet install with this music is old Sega Sonic the hedgehog install level 2
You can cut the rubber one to fit almost any size you need
Love everything about this video
Thanks Dan, I appreciate the support!
Hey Kenny. Thoughts on Danco perfect seal which is a hybrid of wax and rubber.
Hey Tworth, I haven’t used it myself. What about you? And thoughts?
Following
We are wax gasket people here! Just saying
Not Knocking the wax gasket guys! I hope it didn’t sound like that! 😊
Thanks for this.
I was wondering, can I use an old wax ring if it’s still halfway decent?
It’s 1:30am and the stores are closed...really wanting to get this job done.
I started it but then got called into to work some overtime at work.
Thanks.
If you want to make a temporary repair I say yes, but I would run out tomorrow and grab a new ring for it. Hope this helps.
Have you seen set rite toilet flange products look it up , I'm not sure about it never used them
Never seen em, gonna check em out though thanks!
What brand rubber gasket?
The Sani Seal puffy green rubber doughnut flange seal seems to be getting good reports. What do you think?
Haven’t tried it yet. What are your thoughts?
2020 and toilets are still this complex.
Yeah friend, tell me about it!!
Hi sir im pilipino im watching you from philipines

I do love my wax gaskets. If the flange is a bit too low I'll use a thick was gasket. Or a riser if it's really low.
Thanks for the info Ron!
Where's your drop cloth ? So much easier to install tank before setting toilet to flange...smh
Backpack with socks and sunglasses indoors. Bold choice sir. Jk
😂😂😂😂
I like the rubber gaskets better.
Thanks Gerry, same here!

Gotta love the heat! 😊
I want to know how the new house is coming along?
It’s going well guys, thanks for asking. Slowly upgrading it, lots of weekends spent on it. But really happy with it!
I always build my toilet first than set it . service plumber from Nova Scotia new sub
Thanks for reaching out David, and for the support! Cheers!
I usually build it and set it as well but that shelving unit over top the w.c. might limit your ability to do that .
Shelving units mess everything up...amirite?!

Hey Tyler, just checked it out, and subscribed! Awesome work, and I’m rooting for you!
Kenny Molotov much appreciated Kenny!
Even using the time stamps I just got to look at more good editing and cutscenes but no useful information
I will click like if you take the glasses off..
Cool

Wow Louie! Never knew wax ones melted...how hot is it there, and where are you located again?
Kenny Molotov just so you have an idea to it will be 107 central Cali
Wow man! That’s wild. Never had that problem up this far north 😂
I heard nowdays with heating floors wax is not good to use because wax melt when floor is heated.

Broooo, trying to keep my head above water here 😂...not to worry, new uploads coming up soon! Thanks for checking in!
What's with all the music and no explanation of what your doing while you're doing it? Hardly worth watching.
Veey annoying guy.
Could do without the annoying music and "peeps".
the music sucks peeps
15 secs of info ...10 min vid.......FAIL
Older video, I know, but probably one of the most annoying videos I've ever stumbled across.
