I still have the first 2 Redcats I bought 3 years ago for me and my son, they run pretty good now after braking some parts and replacing them with something better (doesn’t mean they won’t brake again). The TRX4s we have they are great trucks but they also brake with little abuse, especially the portals little gears and the electronics (electronics don’t last too long if you run them in water too much). The nature of RC hobby is Run, Brake, Fix, Repeat…and that’s what makes it tons of more fun!
I agree, if we would have bought a TRX4 we would have broken a lot of parts on it no question. It’s just that for me I could get replacement parts from my local hobby shop or shopped online for upgrades a little more easily in my opinion. Thanks for watching, hope you have a good day.
Gotta be honest I couldn’t disagree with you more. Sure $280 for the pro. The Gen 7 is about $220. Also every single part On the market will fit on this rig. As well as everything is available On Redcat as well as all the other online stores and Amazon. Not saying it’s not a good reviews just not accurate in my Opinion. $220 for a waterproof RTR crawler with battery and charger!!!!!! I have 2 and an Everest and a Danchee as well as Axials, RC4WD and multiple Traxxas. I would buy another gen 7 in a heartbeat.
I couldn’t agree more . I bought gen7 pro about 2 years ago and have only had to replace a drive shaft set one time about a week ago. The only other problem I’ve had was wearing out the original pinion gear once at the beach in Galveston . The sand and salt did not treat it well. Still ran for 2 days even with all the sand and salt though , replaced the gear and all has been fine since. And parts are very readily available.
I just recently got into rc ground vehicles. I have found that a set screw is called a grub screw. You are the first person in the rc community that I have heard say set screw. I thought maybe I was weird. Good video. I have an Everest-10. All your information about the gen 7 is absolutely correct. I kind of still want one though. I think I will get a Trx or Axial, but I am the type that wants all rc's. You are right as to whether or not kids take to rc. I have 3 grown children all men now. Bought several cheap rc cars through their childhoods. None of them took to it. They played with them some, but did not get the bug. I am 50 years old and I am an RC Adict. Even started posting videos with them.
@@garageworker I don't really know anyone that has the same passion for rc as I do. I am building tracks and crawler courses on my property. Kind of with the Field of dreams mentality. If I build it, they will come.
No offense, I see what you are saying at times. However if you treat it right, it’ll treat you right. I’ve had mine for 3 years now. It’s been tortured too. However I never broke bumpers off, mangled the body etc. driveshafts were a pain. But for short money, you can throw portals under it, and upgrade tons of stuff with metal parts. Mine has eaten trx4s for breakfast. Secondly, most of us get into this knowing things will break. That’s part of the fun. It paves the way for upgrading. The gen 7 pro is insane for the price you pay, and with mods being much cheaper than a lot of other brands, for less then the cost of a stock trx4, you can drag them 6 ways to sunday
You must not be in competitions because a trx 4 will truly drag a gen 7 when put to the limits...The gen 7 has a lot of limitations if you are a serious rock crawler...My gen 8 looks like his gen 7 and I've only had mine for 2 and a half months..Never had an issue beside bad servo
@@erikcapozzi3425 Stock vs Stock I would say that you are right, although when it comes to parts traxxas's factory parts are just as bad if not worse, like plastic drive shafts.
Thank you! I appreciate your honesty! Also have my little guy starting (same age as your son) but I went the other way… got him the TRX-4 Sport and I got an Everest Gen 7 Sport. Definitely HUGE difference, but I enjoy fixing stuff so all good.
This was my first real crawler. I have made several upgrades and mods. It is a great truck. Mine is still going strong. I WOULD DEFINATELY purchase it again for the money..I don't think you can do better...you can even save more by purchasing a used one from Ebay etc. Excellent vehicle. Tons of fun for crawling and trail driving for sure! a few simple inexpensive mods take it from a 7 out of ten to a 9 out of ten. Plenty of videos on what to do to it to make it excell at crawling. Ben around a while and great parts support.
My honest reaction to this video is pretty fair, it is true that that crawler does break, but traxxas and axial are also known to put even worse parts then that on their trucks, like plastic steering arms and cheaper shocks. That truck is probably more durable then a trx 4 sport is right out of factory. The 3s lipo and the fact that this truck was for a 4 year old kid was the primary reason of the breaks. I saw the end of the video and if I was driving I would keep it dry all the time as to not rot the wheels. I would go slower up the obstacles as to not strip out the gears, and I would probably just use a really large NIMH battery or a big 2s lipo instead of a 3s as to put less wear on the truck. You are absolutely right when it comes to modifying though. Especially in the traxxas department. But still with the quality of traxxas being pretty shitty before mods as well. I would say this is definently a worth while truck.
i bought my gen 7 sport on black friday for 198.00 with free shipping . its my first serious rc .its helped me learn what i like and don't like plus learning about its shortcomings economically . it definatly rolls easy and doesn`t turn well but those things can be fixed . I`m putting a roll cage on it and then repositioning the electrics for lower center of gravity .
So to each their own I suppose. That said you put this out here on the web. I would have to question the rationale to let a 4-5 child have access to what is basically a $300 car. Especially since their fine motor skills are not developed yet. No. 2 after watching you let him run it why in the hell didn't you adjust the throttle and steering dual rate to prevent him from wrecking it and rolling it so often? Keep in mind that you essentially let him destroy it so I wouldn't be so harsh on Redcat.
So many parts from axial fit the gen 7 sport and pro so finding parts isn't that difficult. Axial Transmission work as well just have to drill two new holes in skid plate. Axial drive shafts work as well just need bigger set screw 4mm I believe instead of the 3.
I think the sport was for people to have fun and then blow money on parts that’s went bad lol I’d rather just get the pro axles tho at the same time and put them on the sport I have been super rough on mine and I’ve pulled my daughter around behind it on a roller board so it’s definitely strong but gotta have a few plastic parts swapped to metal but the front axles are the biggest pain I’ve had no doubt
2024 and i just got one and put in bare minimum upgrades so far and its a very capable rc crawler so far ive put in less money than other rc cars stock and its already out preforming the more expensive options so i have to say i dissagree and i would recomend to anyone who is just getting into it and dont want to spend an arm and leg but have a capable crawler
i just ordered a gen 7 pro and it should be here this week. im going to compare it to my current trx4 sport kit with quickrun fusion pro 2300kv motor. we'll see how the everest does. im excited to run it!
I'm thinking about getting a Gen7 for my son and I, until I can afford the Gen8 V2, batteries, and charger. Then when it brakes, use the Gen7 for a parts truck.
The gen7 is a great truck, we have enjoyed ours. I’m not sure how many parts will swap over from the gen7 to the gen8. I know the axles are different, the other parts might swap over. Keep your eye on marketplace for a used car, you can sometimes find deals.
Yeah, with very young children, they simply cannot grasp proportional drive, steering, or really any of the physics of the vehicle. Spend as little as possible for the younger hobbyists as the features of a true "pro" grade are beyond lost on them. Give em an Amazon special rc and they'll likely have a bit more fun as the trucks are 4x as fast. Kids just aren't terribly interested in going slow or being careful. Cheers!
Totally understand bro have 4 kids and 20 Rc cars and trucks 1/2 Redcat the other Arrma . I bash regularly kids are grown none interested.although my grand kid gets amped 😊yay 🎉
The truck does have 100’s of miles on it. The driveshafts have always been a problem on the gen7. I don’t think the TRX4 would be any better, but at least I could get spare parts at my local hobby shop. Thanks for watching.
Like other people have commented, your son is too young to understand the concept of this type of vehicle. I've had mine for almost 4 years now and have not had to replace replace near the parts you've had to. Of course I don't have a 4 or 5 year old to tear it up.
I've linked to all our upgrades in the video description.
I've had a pro for six years and I think it's one of the best ever made.

Thank you for your comment. I feel really lucky my son took to RC cars, I’m hoping to race with him some day. But I’ll leave that up to him.

definitely got your moneys worth out it
.. that boy loves his rig!!!! im definitely getting one
My servo horn broke same day I got it Amain replaced it with a aluminum one and sent tools to replace it
That’s pretty solid of them to fix it. Mine lasted a while, but they are all gonna break at some point.

Redcat Everest 10 is the best out of them . Only have broken a plastic servo horn

Gen 7 Pro hits way about its price and i bought a new one foe 225 dollars on sale....great crawler
You can get an adapter and put in the truck and use a traxxas batteries
I think the sport was for people to have fun and then blow money on parts that’s went bad lol I’d rather just get the pro axles tho at the same time and put them on the sport I have been super rough on mine and I’ve pulled my daughter around behind it on a roller board so it’s definitely strong but gotta have a few plastic parts swapped to metal but the front axles are the biggest pain I’ve had no doubt
a bit of blue locktight does wonders on the grub screws/set screws.

Amazon is loaded with parts for the Gen 7. Those wheels and tires are worth 125 dollars. I'd think about new foams.
The best driveshafts are MIP ones. They're bullet proof.
I just got my Gen 7 Pro.

I had to buy the same servo horn but can the pro use the last hole on the horn what axles does the pro have
Looks like it takes quite a beating, probably pretty lucky thats all you've had to do 😂
I really still don’t know if I wanna buy a gen7 pro or a Trx4 sport
So you’re saying get a Traxxas TRX4 over this vehicle?
Yeah, with very young children, they simply cannot grasp proportional drive, steering, or really any of the physics of the vehicle. Name brand crawlers are not “a little extra money” they are 2 1/2 times more money. Yep around 500.00😂
of course it didnt last... you have to take care of it. clean it etc.
I broke my gear box spur gear set up sucks other than that I like the truck 🚛
great video lovely 💗💗💗
