If you're able to resist the town food, i thought the OCT was a pretty inexpensive trail to hike. If you wanted to, you could stay at hiker-biker sites with showers and electricity and not have to pay for a hotel room the whole hike. Opposed to something like the PCT where you need to pay for a hotel or a hostel stay just to charge up your electronics and take a shower. But freshly caught fish and chips w/ a beer is hard to resist!

Yes, absolutely agree on the campsites! That's exactly what I did, and it saved me plenty of money, though the costs still added up. I imagine if dispersed camping were allowed more freely, it would be even cheaper. I really loved how each campsite had those really nice stations provided by REI-it honestly felt like luxury lol. And you're so right about the town food; the corn from the Jetty Fishery was soooo good!

I tried to do the OCT in 2023 and got to Cannon Beach before quitting. I tried again in 2024 and got to Nehalem before quitting. It's the logistics that just completely sap the fun out of it for me. If they want to advertise this as a thru hike, they need to offer the infrastructure or at minimum allow us to camp in more places, and currently it's getting worse, not better.

I'm so sorry you had to cut your hikes short-I totally understand how frustrating that must have been. The logistics on the OCT can be such a challenge, and I completely agree with you. They really do try to advertise it as a thru-hike, but without better infrastructure or more camping options, it feels like they're not setting hikers up for success. Honestly, I found myself thinking how much better this trail would be to tackle as day section hikes or something similar. Hopefully, as more people hike it, there will be more momentum to improve it for everyone

@@anzarath Unfortunately the exact opposite has been the case. If you read Bonnie's book and follow her updates, she's noted that increased foot traffic has led the NIMBYs to pressure campgrounds to close hiker/biker sites and make it harder for us stinky bums to pass through their precious neighborhoods.

@@Andy-Mesa Haha, yeah, I definitely felt that NIMBY attitude the most walking through Gearhart to get to Manzanita lol I didn’t realize it was that bad though-thanks for pointing that out!
