    I think Lego should keep doing texture with the Lego Art Series, especially with more landscape oriented pieces

    • @arghjayem
      @arghjayem ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree, the mosaic approach initially taken with the art sets is nice in some ways bad in others (very easy, but repetitive). I just wish they’d gone this direction sooner.

    • @patricksnoring4739
      @patricksnoring4739 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@arghjayem it’s just not as enjoyable as a display piece. Part of the draw for it is the cleverness of the build and pixel art with studs just isn’t as impressive as the wave

    • @Bulldozer4000
      @Bulldozer4000 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Hard agree, the depth and texture in the wave is the sole reason why I'm actually interested in this one. Same with the Starry Night, they could've just made it a replica of the painting but adding the depth makes it intrinsically different from the original and is a plus over just getting the picture instead of the Lego product.

    Fascinating how this actually balanced out value wise compared to a real frame! Frames are EXPENSIVE

  • @Zenlore6499

    I’ve honestly never noticed the fishermen or Mt Fuji in the original painting, so seeing a bunch of tiny faces and the little peak here was surprising!

    I like how this set is channeling the original artwork, which isn't a painting, but rather a print made out of wooden block. It was printed from that block many times when the artist who made it was still alive, and now we have around 100 surviving copies, each looking slightly different.

    honestly I love this, it's one of my favourite paintings and this set struck a great middle ground between the overly 3D starry night and the overly flat world map and I hope lego keeps it up

  • @GreyGaymer

    This feels like one of those sets up there with the Bonsai tree for me, delightful result relative to the price tag that feels REALLY nice, not strictly licensed but still clearly inspired by something and going for something pre-existing. I think I'll try to snag this one for sure! I hope we get more sets like this one and Starry Night, that recreate art but really play with the texture and presence of the works themselves

    Wow this looks alright! The frame and the mat (sp?) really tie it together and work very well. So nice to see you review this! We have a print of the original already in our bedroom. The original art piece was a print as well, so a high quality copy shouldn't have brush strokes.

  • @rarewhiteape
    @rarewhiteape ปีที่แล้ว +5

    In regards to a comparison with a printed reproduction, if you buy a print you take it home, hang it on the wall, people might see it and think oh that’s nice. End of story.
    With a Lego one you not only have the fun of building it, but after you hang it on the wall the more observant guests in your house might see it and go, oh that’s Lego? And then it becomes a conversation piece.

  • @AHYL88

    This is definitely the best of the Art series of sets; yes you only make one picture and there's far less pieces unlike most of the previous ones but this one is less costly as you don't have a ton of unused pieces that you are forced to buy that are tied to the sets' alternative pictures.
    This isn't for me, but this one I can appreciate a lot more than the others, if only for much less wasted pieces that are left unused. And the layering looks brilliant as opposed to completely flat pictures.

  • @Brixxter
    @Brixxter ปีที่แล้ว +23

    As long as these sets utilise pieces with organic shapes I can fully get behind and appreciate them. The dotted/ tiled ones, not so much. It would be easy to code an algorithm that automatically turns paintings into dotted or tiled representations ready for sale, which is questionable in the art department. With something like this however I feel like artistic value gets preserved, as the designers put plenty of work into transferring the artist's style into brick form. An added bonus is that these layers of bricks add depth and are pretty interesting to look at as opposed to just flat dots and tiles. I'm not the target customer for this but I hope that if more art sets are underway, they all follow this principle.

    I’m not big into these LEGO art sets, as I prefer buying sets that can add to my LEGO city, but if budgeting weren’t an issue, I would buy this one in a heartbeat. It is gorgeous, beautifully captures the original, and I love the fact that the frame is buildable so you don’t have to figure out how to frame the picture. Well done on LEGO’s part for this one!

    It's really nice. The designers did a good job with this. I think it may look better if the sky was going back one plate into the mat and behind the horizon, but that may have prevented locking it into place

    Great review as always Jang. On a side note, I think the "messy" desk with the Gundam kit tools looks really cool, because it makes it look more as a whole of all the things you do on live streams. That plus the lighting gives me a Beakman's World workshop kind of vibes, which I really dig!

    Loving the turn in the art series away from the simple tile mosaics. This and the Starry Night set are beautiful. I do wish we got a minifig of Hokusai though, if only so I can have a minifig in Edo-period Japanese dress and a topknot hairpiece :).
    Im curious about what the next one in this series will be (assuming they keep producing non-mosaic art sets). The first two are actually kind of connected as Vincent van Gogh was greatly influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and some claim he was directly inspired to create Starry Night after seeing a copy of the Great Wave.

    Re: your comment at around 4:00 in the video about the background color transition because of the use of nougat and black art plates - I finally got this after it being backordered from LEGO and found that close up, it is noticeable, but that once you're at a "normal" viewing distance, the color gradient smooths right out. You weren't being super-critical, but I was worried it might bother me after seeing your video. However, now that it's up on the mantle, I love it, and I really appreciate the designers' ability to use the white and various grey tiles to make that transition much smoother than I anticipated.

    I think that you would also enjoy Van Gogh's Starry Night which has a very good 3D aspect and like The Great Wave (which I have yet to build) is much more enjoyable than hundreds of 1x1 circular tiles.

  • @Kat-rg6in
    @Kat-rg6in ปีที่แล้ว +2

    i love the lego art sets we have gotten. starry night was an incredible building experience and the 3d elements make it distinctly lego while also being semi realistic as oil paints often have lots of built up texture as well. i’m glad they continued the 3d elements in this set and understand why it’s much flatter to match the original work as well as alleviating a flaw in the van gogh set being that the 3d sections are HEAVY and not great for hanging on a wall as they suffer from being pulled down by gravity (happened to me, had it hanging and one day the landscape sections just fell off) i so wish we got a figure just because i think it’s a really nice touch. over all super excited to put this together when it arrives :)

  • @Denouermont
    @Denouermont ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I actually really appreciate the depth that the Lego version has, it spiritually if not authentically, captures the depth that the original wood block prints have (which is something I only just discovered but should make sense if you think about the process of print making-impressing layers of color into the paper). I’ve only just started looking, so they probably are out there, but a reproduction block print of the great wave would be much more ideal than the basic paper or canvas (would would have an even less accurate surface texture than just smooth plain paper) print that has no depth at all.

    I was hanging out with friends on Jan 1st; and we all decided to make a trip to the store, and he bought and built this that same day. I was pretty fascinated with the build and his finish; it seemed satisfying, and like such a GOOD value compared to the Architecture Cities sets (e.g. Paris, London, San Francisco). It impressed me. I’d want it myself, but I don’t have a space I’d like to put it.

    As always, great review JANG. FYI, there shouldn't be brushstrokes because Hokusai's great wave is a ukiyoe Japanese print where the 'original' was a series of different stamps with one for each colour ink to form the complete image. Hence it's not a painting.

    The Lego Art Series, along with the Botanical Collection have been the sleeper hits of the past few years and for good reason. Both push brick building in directions that LEGO has never gone before.
    Considering the creative and artistic potential behind the themes, I’d like to see LEGO push the limit a bit more on the plastics processing: color palette, swirls, gradients, different plastic textures, etc. Actually start to develop some of the same principles and concepts these artists used but in LEGO form.

    I think the lego art pill would be easier to swallow if they reduced the price of the sets like dramaticly, beacuse no matter how many pieces they put into these they just dont provide the value to justify their prices. This one especialy i think doesnt have an excuse to cost this much (especialy since it doesnt have any licensing cost attached to it)
    Also i think they should do more of these 3d art sets like this and the starry night beacuse thats the real benefit of doing art pieces in lego. You get to go the 3rd dimension since your not bound to the papper in the same way. The all dots art sets are just boring and bad and overpriced and kills creativity and the joy of building, (basicly goes against everythng lego stands for)

    I really wanted to see this in action because I wasn't initially sold on it because of how angular everything felt. I really appreciated how flowy Starry Night managed to be, and I think the waves here really needed to be rounded. Seeing it here, there are places that feel better to me, like the top of the biggest wave, but places like the bottom right really don't work for me. I'm also really, really not into the dots style for the background, I don't know why they chose that as opposed to something more like Starry Night, I really think it looks horrible
