No a reaview needs to be labled as a review, This is just simply an opinion over gameplay. a review has points to follow and would also be in the review category under gaming. This is just an information about the game mechaniks and not an indeepth few of the game itself.
I personally love rpg's that give you actual choice with a deep quest/faction system and Elex does that well. The game world is beautifully designed and great to explore with the jet pack. The combat is not perfect but challenging and offers many different playstyles. This game does not hold your hand and is pretty hardcore especially on ultra difficulty but I enjoy the challenge. I like the trainer based leveling system and the many different ways you can build your character. The deep dialogue/reputation system is great but the translation from german to english is not perfect and the writing isn't either. This is certainly not a AAA game but it is a return to form for German developer Pirahna Bytes. There is no microtransactions and no season pass so the game really is not that expensive and offers a lot of content. I am having fun but PB games aren't for everyone. Personally I love it.

Sam here, I love Elex so far (16 hours in). Witcher etc. were all nice and good, but no challenge at all. I just pref games like this over the others RPG.

You didn't explain this game at all, like not even 5 percent, it seemed as if you were looking for everything you could find to complain about it, without going over what it actually is as a game. I honestly think you need to re do this video and make a better before you buy about Elex.

nope, the game is garbage. The patch barely unlocked the 45 fps lock on 90% of the places. For no reason. The combat is cancer. The items are shit, the inventory is garbage but then again, it's a cheap console trash game.

Falcon, I really like your reviews, but this video is kinda bad. This is a huge RPG, but not comparable with Skyrim, Fallout or Witcher. It has it's own atmosphere, it's own way of storytelling. Sure, not everyone likes it...I think you should show the good and the bad sites of the game. You emphasized the bad things, but where are all the good? The story, the enormous detailed world, huge amount of quests, the skill system, the living environment... For me it sounds like you've played the game 2 hours and had too much expectations. But you've only seen a little crumb of the cake. Not giving the game the chance it deserves is simply not fair. Guys, I enjoy this game and I can totally recommend it, if: - you like a huge single player experience with much love for details -high end graphic isn't really important for you -you can look over a bad combat-system (Sorry for possible grammar mistakes, english isn't my native language)
Artcart the first couple hrs of this game I didn’t like it because I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing but now I’ve finally got passed that grind and the game is opening up greatly. I still don’t like the risen system where you have to pay trainers to upgrade your skills but I like the game better than risen because you don’t have to pay money to learn how to roll
the comments in here about it being actually good, and how this review was not the best. I'll probably end up playing it when my budget allows. The fact that he said theres a lot of talking i'm like "sign me up" i want choices in what to say and do.

He literally only compared the combat, the weakest link in the Witcher 3. Elexs combat is slow, and kinda clunky, but the witchers is smooth, and free flowing. They'll improve it on the update, but Elexs combat is lackluster at best for me, and I understand Falcons Complaints with the game as well I enjoyed the game overall, but the combat needs MAJOR improvement. At least speed it up a tad
I love the witcher series but I wish people would stop comparing every game to it. Witcher's combat is really easy and gets boring after while. It's redeeming quality is the amazy stories cd project red tells. Honestly, cyberpunk 2077 looks like it's gonna be way better than the witcher especially because the combat looks amazing.

Imam Is it more like Gothic 1/2 or like Gothic 3? Really makes a difference imo. Gothic 3 was repetative and kinda empty once you left the woody area and most quests were just "Go to X, kill Y, come back".

I like older RPGs for the most part. I miss having lots of detailed conversations with lots of different choices. Many games today have taken to simplifying dialogue options because the developers feel that directional choice (Mass Effect's dialogue wheel, Fallout 4's weird 4-way dialogue system, etc) is easier on controllers than scrolling through lists. While that certainly may have been the case when the original Mass Effect game came out, it seems like tons of developers have opted to go in this direction. Bioware switched Dragon Age's system to be more like it's other child, Bethesda did weird things to Fallout 4 to appeal to fans of shooters like take away stat based dialogue checks aside from charisma as well as stream line the story to make you the good guy no matter what (either a saint or a begrudging sarcastic good guy but a good guy nonetheless). That being said, better combat engines have made me expect better combat I won't lie about that. And I don't want to spend hours listening to my dialogue choices if none of them are significant or if the other person is just droning on and on. If you're feeling nostalgic for RPGs of the past and don't mind turn based combat, then I suggest Divinity: Original Sin and its recently released sequel. They scratch that itch and they do it very well.
i paid £45 and I love it.. I haven't experienced frame rate drop. combat starts off feeling slow and clunky but as you learn how to fight it becomes more fluid. yep the talking is boring and the graphics aren't that great. the story seems solid, each area is different with all kinds of places to explore each faction seems to have an internal war happening in which you have to choose a side. you can kill anybody that you want to (it changes the story drastically) and the only loading screens you get are when you load in, die or fast travel so for a game this size I'm impressed. a game so well put together by a tiny game developer and all I see is negative reviews. if you guys like rpg's then you should buy this if you don't then maybe you should try one.
It does bring one thing that I haven't seen in any other game. The attribute/skill points are separate from leveling up. Sure, you get 10 attribute points and a skill point every time you level up, but you can also craft potions that raise your attributes and skills as well.
Preface: I loved gothic, never played risen. 1:30 The berserkers believe technology led to the end of the world so they refuse to go past medieval technology; hence their cities asthetics; that said the roofs are wooden if you look at them from the inside, they hay placed atop is insulation... 2:00 The talking is optional, you don't have to go through all those conversations, and if you're just searching for a quest pop-up, you can skip the dialogue anyway. 3:30 Well maybe you'd discover more options in the combat if you read how to actually fight in the game. I can see you're button-mashing which is completely gimping your characters abilities. 3:50 "This is a $60 AAA game" It's $50, not $60. and given the story mode is 50 hours long while only doing about half the side-content, I'd say the amount of content is worth the price, the question is if it's the kind of content you enjoy, which considering what I call immersion you call boring, and your inability to grasp the basics of the games gameplay, I'd say you probably want something more casual. (can't wait to hear complaints of the difficulty) 5:40 "This game is a lot of busy work, a lot of talking, not a lot of combat" If there's not a lot of combat you're staying in one place too long, there's loads of combat. As for busy work, can we talk about quests? Because with two exceptions I never once felt like I was doing needless busy work in a quest, unlike MMORPGs where *everything* is needless busywork in quests. 6:50 I never had a frame-rate drop, but I'm also playing on PC.

It feels like the guy just really didn't like the game and was looking for stuff to complain about. It's an RPG with heavy focus on the role-playing aspect so yeah, if you want to, you can talk to a lot of NPCs. They tell you what you need to know about them and give you background for why their quests matter and why you should help them. It makes sense unless you grew up in the era of "fetch me 10 boar asses" quest GPS systems. There's combat everywhere in the game too, so I'm almost convinced all the dude did is the first few tutorial steps and visiting the berserkers. Kind of disappointing as far as reviews go.

I charge in, strive to the side to avoid the enemies charge and dash out some hits, roll away and fly up before the alpha raptor rips off my head. The raptors hiss at me in the air, I'm waiting for the right time. Then boom I come down with my flaming two hander smashing on 2 of them knocking them on the ground, I dodge another claw attack and execute 1 raptor with a combo The others used that time tho and slice my back twice before I manage to get distance. I need to back out and heal, I run leaving my girl with them. After healing I use some spells while getting close and finish them off with the mage now going melee. This guy fighting is literally spam hitting Put difficulty up and get gud

But when I know that the game never clicked with me I try to find out why and I wouldn't criticize a mechanic I never actually engaged in deeply enough to find out more if I did. Dude, you obviously stopped listening pretty early in the game (since you're complaining about the game having too much dialogue), because one of the very first characters you meet tells you all about the factions and he clearly explains, that technology wasn't lost. Instead people of the medieval looking faction made the decision to get rid of all forms of technology and signs of modernity and they even developed a hardcore anti-tech stance, which influences their behaviour towards you based on your gear, weapons, dialogues and actions. So if you say the high-tech and medieval stuff doesn't go together, you haven't understood, that this world has wildly different factions and the way they look and conduct themselves is a conscious choice on their part. This game is typical Piranha Bytes, but it's more like Gothic than Risen (thankfully). Piranha Bytes' games always have a focus on central european audiences, where Elex is much more popular than in the US or elsewhere outside of Europe. Americans are used to shallow, flashy grinding and claptrap. This game doesn't try to deliver that.
Rise he's in the berserker village. They BASE their culture around midevil times because they despise tech and everything about it. They live simple lives use bows and so on. The clerics however embrace tech. They live in a volcano with mechs, robots, drones and brain washing. The outlaws are kind of in between I think. But the berserker peeps build everything that way. In the domed city all the factions come together. And in the berserker areas the buildings are the same. Its just how they are. I think he either didn't pay attention or didn't play very far. The psi powers are awesome. This game is really good

This video was incredibly uninformative. Yeah ok it's tedious, but WHY? You didn't talk about the gameplay at all, how the quests are, factions and their agendas, story, is there crafting in the game? Survival elements? ("Cold Increased" prompt at 2:15), how's the levelling system? How's the magic system? Shooting mechanics? Can you take cover behind objects when wielding guns? What kind of weapons are there? Seriously, get your shit together. I don't care if YOU think it's tedious, I just wanna know what the game is like and I'd like to make up my own opinion before spending the money.
Yeah he talked about exposition and then nobody explains anything to you.. I mean W.T.F? He also didn´t even mention that the choices you do make in the conversations have an impact later into the game! One of the best features this game has to offer. The dude probably played it 3-4 hours got frustrated because the "Hero" in the game is a nobody and is getting treated like a normal NPC/nobody and probably because he died 20 times in these 3 hours.

We should boycott him. 50 bucks totally makes the game be worth it now, and you can definitely tell the extra work those four more people put into the game.
My 2 cents. I love the talking, all the info, all the things you didn't like I loved. But we all love different types of games so it is understandable that it wasn't an awesome game for you, I just bought it 4 days ago and I am having a blast.
You appear to be missing the point. It's not about the quantity of dialogue/exposition. It's all about how that is delivered. If it's presented with character then it captivates the player, but Elex delivers 99% of dialogue in such a flat and dull way, even just 2 lines of dialogue is so mind numbingly boring it simply isn't interesting. Kinda sets the theme for the entire game, sadly - uncaptivating, dull, flat, and entirely unappealing.

This might seem weird, but I actually do occasionally enjoy games that feel retro, in both the good and bad sense. Even though the combat feels dated, I kind of want that sometimes. I want games that feel like they were from the early-to-mid-2000s. That era brought us some of the best RPGs and it's fun to revisit that time through a brand new experience.
I spent 15 eur on the game and honestly think is one of the best GDR I’ve played. Lots of choices, lots of quests and different possible outcome. Terribly underrated.
The measure of a good game is based off of the pros vs the cons i.e a good game is considered good when the pros make up for the cons, so taking a con in one game and comparing it to a con in another game to somehow justify it, is moot if the game youre comparing it too is fkin shit in almost every other aspect as well lmao. Skyrim has bad combat, this is known, but skyrim has pros that heavily outweigh its cons... elex... well elex is the exact opposite now isnt it, just like risen.... and yes, just like gothic.

Didn't have a single clip of the game past the first hour or 2 of play. Literally everything showed here is the tutorial for the game. He still has the intro weapon, didn't even pick up one of the two axes you literally walk by in the intro. Also, haven't had any bugs or frame-drops. I'm 20 hours in and this game is a blast. Never played a Piranha Bites games in my life. Highly recommend.
I've had 2 crashes and regular frame drops (nothing unplayable though) on PS4 but I pretty much grew up on playing high end games on a shitty PC so I'm use to it, other than that I absolutely love the game.
The first "Before you buy" i really disliked. You didnt explained what in your opinion are the flaws, spread some false facts and seemed to be a bit salty. This game isnt for everyone i get it. Gothic 2 is one of my all time favorites and im also german, which also pushes me a bit in a fanboy position. But I really like the game, i think the scenario is intresting, the quests got some really cool twists and i also like the conversations. Sure its not everbodys cup of tee, and they are obvious flaws like the fight system, but if you are into Rpgs, this game definitly worth a try :)

well i'm playing it and I like it although like you said it does have it's flaws. however after hearing about EA's actions today, i'm starting to think I should grab up all the solo player rpg's I can find. with all these multiplayer, micro transaction, cash grab games the rage now solo rpg's may become a thing of the past soon. :( Also there is some Gothic nostalgia going on with me too. :) )
The architecture problem reminds me of how in Fallout 4 no one can build a nice clean picket fence or a flush wall … like it’s been 200 years since the nukes fell and still no one can build a fkn fence
A group of 24 people made this entire game, what do you expect? They did a damn good job for such a small team though, kudos to them. I'm buying it, hopefully they use our money to improve themselves in the future. They have great potential.

Looking at 2005 and considering we had things like Kotor and Jade Empire (and Mass Effect was just around the corner - a 10 years old game, by the way) and comparing these to some new RPG releases from now… a 2005 one isn’t looking all that bad.

This is the first time I've watched one of these "Before You Buy" videos, and given the vague, not to mention a couple of times inaccurate statements, I hope you normally do more homework before you record these types of videos. I'm not going to say the game doesn't have a lot of issues, but you seem bent on only the issues. Shame, hopefully people pay more attention to the comments to your video than the video itself.
Honestly, having finished Gothic 2, 6 times now, I wanted this kind of gameplay and this kind of weird, clunky, hard to master combat system. If Gothic and Risen are having no new releases, I hope they will still continue with Elex. I hope these types of games will never ever die.
Actually this game is not like fallout, skyrim, bioshock or all the other examples you mentioned, but it is like gothic. And it's clear to see you never played that MASTAPIECE. And it is exactly how it should be. Lots and lots of dialogue. Only bad thing is the fighting system. And that's it. For such a small indie dev this is a hell of a game.

I personally have a huge weakspot for Piranha Bytes and yes, I love Elex 😊 My kind of RPG and the old skool gameplay is exactly what I want from them. Loving every minute of it!
My favourite part of the game so far, every time you walk off a ledge and the character goes stiff and just drops. This isn't a bad game, I've never played a piranha bites game before but this is what I expected. Combat takes a bit of getting used to, but enemies have attack patterns that you need to learn or you'll get your ass whooped. I'm not sure this deserved such a negative sounding before you buy. But I'm personally enjoying playing it. Long ass conversations with NPC's and all.
The game isn't bad, it's amazing at what it wants to achieve, which is being a walk-and-talk simulator in a beautiful open world, if you don't like talking to characters and making decisions and just want combat like any other RPG it's not for you. Falcon clearly didn't understand that. It was never meant to be about the combat.

Got the game yesterday been having a wonderful time playing it I would recommend this game to anyone who's a rpg fan and not those call of duty guys you know what kind of games I speak of

I don't know about hay but i do know about reed for roofing and it's pretty durable, easy to procure so fairly cheap. Free even if you live near a lake and cut it yourself. I know that is in demand for export from where i live, to be used in home building wall insulation as an ecological alternative that actually preforms better than styrofoam. So i guess using hay for their roof means they are pretty advanced :) Not to mention that it would probably be easier to find and use that material rather than other "modern" options. They probably build homes only by hand without heavy machinery so it makes sense.
This game takes place a long time after the comet hit. Also the faction that has straw roofs believe technology should be thrown away. So they choose a more simple lifestyle, They refuse to use guns because it's against there beliefs. I personally like soaking up all the lore from any game so i like all the explanations. This was my first piranha bytes game and I love it! Like falcon said it's really up to your gaming preferences.
aaand ANOTHER review where all they show is the very beginning area you can explore in 2-3 hours. Why would you do a review if you don't even bother to play the game? The gaming industry is infuriating me more and more...

'Architexture' lol, actually thatch roofs would be perfectly viable in a post apocalyptic world, if the climate was cold it would retain heat well, since the alternative would be to use a complicated system of insulation to keep the house warm of for people to live in shacks which wouldn't be suitable. In the UK people still build cottages with thatch roofs in the countryside, although it's less common. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I get the impression from this analysis that a game is not worthy if it doesn't bring anything to the table. The game does have its flaws just like any other game but it also has systems that were meant to be that way and are not flaws like some people would like to perceive them. That's the thing with Piranha Bytes, they're often misunderstood. They often don't change what works for them and that's why all of their games like Gothic, Risen, and Elex, play very similar. I think it's reasonable to say that games by Piranha Bytes is an acquired taste. Either you are going to love it or hate it. I'm never disappointed with PB because in general I know exactly what I'm signing up for. Their rpg games are traditional, slow-paced with a lot of dialogue, and with little hand holding.
I feel he likely used it more as a more wider known comparison, rather then a "It created" the trope. Though I agree the video does a poor job at what its trying to do.
dont know why you mention 60 bucks three times in this video...i bought it for 44,- and it was not on sale. anyway, i enjoy the game a lot. But yeah, the animations and lip sync is almost vintage at that point...hopefully PB gets it right next time.
Yeah, kinda ;) Since i am german i play it with the original voice acting. Dont know if the english voice over is better or worse, but in most cases the original language is always the best choice.
I'm actually disgusted by the commenters on this video. Just because this one review wasn't up to your standards surely doesn't mean that the others aren't. You're all giving them so much shit, though you came to their channel for the review. Clearly gameranx is a channel you watch on the regular, or else you wouldn't be here ignorantly bashing the team that has brought you hundreds of amazing videos before this. Take a few steps back, calm yourselves (because I bet this is a game you'll avoid regardless of who says what) and watch some previous before you buys until you realize that gameranx is still your favorite channel.
The game is amazing, fun, and for me - addicting. I have played hundreds of games since the Atari 2600 days. The game isn't perfect, though no game is. The game reminds me of Shadowrun, what with the sci-fi mixed with fantasy going on. I have a lot of games in my queue, though I keep coming back to ELEX.

Pretty half heartedly made video sorry Falcon :/ more info on elex: there are 4 major factions (3 which you can join) 2 futuristic 1 kind of mad max and 1 lives in wooden huts because instead of using the bad "technologie" they replenish the wasteland with mana instead of elex (the resource). So no this game doesn't have a thematically weird setting or people it has many themes and many settings. That being said the game is alot of walking, talking and exploring (you do get fast travel points) but you actually have meaningful dialogue options that either get you killed, someone else killed or leave you with a fat bounty or nothing at the end, and you gotta level up many different talents for dialogue-checks compared to something like fallout 4 which (for the most part) only needs charisma. You don't start the game strong and with a huge skillset like the witcher 3 your character has trouble killing fat mutant rats and most other enemies are obstacles that you're sloowly working towards beating, going from "this mutant dog thing is impossible to kill" to "hey i think i can take this on now!", around hour ~40-50 maybe you'll see yourself killing giant ass mechs with shotguns, rifles, sword&shield, magic, energy weapons, rocket launchers or whatever you like! You gotta earn everything from armors which need you to get high ranks in a faction or weapons which are locked behind stat requirements so no shortcut to being a badass :) All that said this game does have a huuuge wind up time and "simple" combat kinda like a souls game (roll dodge block hit when enemy is open) buuut it feels alot less refined like those games, so be careful :D
After about 15 hours of the game I have yet to really encounter much dialogue that I would consider "meaningful", or at least by 15 hours into the game I am already so sick and tired of listening to people talk that I couldn't care less what they actually have to say at this point; yeah your dialogue choices make a difference such as one causing a fight to the death and the other resulting in a completely different outcome, but it's as Falcon said; that's nothing new and a ton of other games have done that as well as doing other things, like combat, sooo much better (most notably The Witcher 3, the Fallout games, Mass Effect, etc). The dialogue honestly hurt my enjoyment of this game a lot more than anything else, because every single person you talk to drones on, and on, and on, explaining in a very uninteresting, chronological fashion their entire life story. Also, Fallout 4 (as with the other Bethesda games) has tons of dialogue options that require stats other than Charisma, and playing a character with high Strength vs high Intelligence results in a lot of quests having different outcomes; what you said on that front is just outright untrue. Also, it would have made much more sense within the world if the Berserkers had a bit more modern wooden architectural style, especially considering one of the buildings they are using is a very modern concrete building, OR, at the very least, a real-world history inspired look rather than the generic fantasy, even kind of elvish looking, style. Visually, It definitely feels much more out of place in the world compared to the other factions.
Tbh, even if he left those things out, I come to see the gameplay also. Those things you put in does not give someone like me, who even knows people who were excited for the game, want to buy it. It looks like if THQ did Fallout 3 and put magic in it. It doesn’t look very strong to me and I very much agree that for a $60 game, it doesn’t give me much reason to want to buy it. I’ve played a few THQ games and if it moves and plays like their other games I will take a pass on it.
+1 -- Gotta admit, it's a bad recommendation.. Not that Elex is a great game, it's certainly niche and has it's issues. But the issues Falcon brought up is *Extremely* subjective and treated as the objective focus on the game. You can absolutely *Ruin* it.. if you stick to your standard expectations of what a game/combat system should be.. And All of Parana's development is pretty counter-culture. Falcon even acknowledges this.. but can't push past the subjective taste. but the price-tag is pretty hard to sell at. no reasoning with that.
Everything everyone can say about the game is going to be extremely subjective and based on their own personal experience. There is no such thing as an objective game review, and there is no such thing as having an "objective focus" on a game. The things that stood out to him as good or bad in his experience of the game are not going to be the same things that stand out to you. There is nothing "bad" about him making a recommendation based on his experiences, simply because his opinion is different than yours. Regardless of the point of the game, and without going through some roundabout process of changing your frame of mind or taking into consideration the history of the particular studio (as if that somehow affects your enjoyment of the game), what matters is how the experience of playing the game stands on it's own. Falcon clearly didn't enjoy it, so he didn't recommend it, and gave his explanation as to why it wasn't enjoyable to him. Wording things with the intent of leading others to believe that what you say is objective is dishonest at best. Video game reviews are not, and have never been, about anything other than personal experiences. We can only experience things from our own subjective point of view; anyone who claims to be able to see things from a truly objective standpoint is simply wrong.
There's a reason why they build houses like they do. There's tons of dialogue on the specific subject. And I'm pretty sure it's available as soon as you reach the Berserker town aswell... The heavy dialogue is something this studio is known for, so this is nothing new. If you've played their previous games, this shouldn't come as a shock to you. They're known to focus on rich story and mixing folklore and fairytales with lots of lore. Also, calling this a AAA game is just wrong.. PiranhaBytes is a small small studio, and have always been small. They don't rely on media and big campaigns to hype their games, they never have. You'd know this if you'v played any of the Gothic or Risen games. They spend what little they have on development only. And "bringing something new to the table" has never been their "thing". They found a structure that works, and they've stuck to it since the beginning. Rich story, dialogue heavy, clunky combat that evolves, and factions and reputations. This has stayed the same throughout ALL their games, and they know it. That's their thing. They never claim to revolutionise anything. They have a fanbase and cater to them. Wether that's wrong or right for you, is up to you completely. Also the framerate drops? I haven't experienced that once in this game, and it's been stuck on the highest settings since day 1. This might be something specific to certain GPU's or "bad computers", but certainly not on mine. I think you're aware of most of these points, most likely adressing them for newcomers to the genre.. Still, I felt the need to mention them (with facts in mind).
Why compare the game with the wicther game it like comparing dead island and dying light both good games but play different from each other in different ways. Like in elex yes the combat is a bit slow but there also a lot to do like explore the wasteland not knowing what over the next hill or the feeling of is that going to hurt me the freedom is there for you the player to make that choice. At the same time yes there are bugs but dose no one remember skyrim day one not saying both games are the same but skyrim was broken for a lot of people but still got game of the year. At the end of this the game just fun not sure if it's just me but am enjoying the game and hope more people play the game elex
I feel in love with this game! Does it have jank? Yes it does but the kind of jank that I love! The writing in this game is superb and all that dialogue is interesting and fleshes out the world. It feels really lived in. The combo of post apocalyptic, sci Fi and fantasy is so unique and works well. This is my first piranha bites game and now I'll be doing a deep dive into all their games!
I picked this up recently for around $20 I absolutely hated it for the first 4 hours Had no idea what I was doing, just took off into the wilderness because I kept getting yelled at for opening up my menu. Died probably 500 times because of the bugs and oh my god don’t even get me started with the bugs. I’ve never played such a clunky game before. Anyways with that said I’m about 15 hours in now, and I freaking love this game. Still broken, but I am absolutely hooked. You just have to learn to adapt to its world and once you do there is so much to discover and experience. From random merchants getting ambushed to “Mrcupcake will remember that” leaving me feeling like I make an impact on the world
No loot boxes, no micro transactions, no season passes. Few things needs moding, but over all, it's your game, your world, you're the king in the castle. If you truly put gameplay and immersion over graphics, that's game for you.

Honestly I really like this game. The game encourages exploration through not only the dialogue but through running through the world trying to figure out what the hell is going on. The game is all about choosing what you want to do and how you want to play, and it really bugs me how you brought attention to the straw houses when literally you are in the home of the faction that is like "you know what fuck technology" I feel like this is a review of a dude who got stuck after the first 3 hours and didn't wanna play anymore because "its too hard". This game is great, its a simple RPG that doesn't try and do anything fancy, it just gives you a new world to explore and roam around in and love. Sure the MELEE combat is a bit clunky, but the ranged combat is fluid and easy to use. I really feel like you didn't get past the first few missions and just started crying about it like half the people on the Elex steam page and subreddit. Honestly if you like lore and RPG games I say pick this up.

Idk I guess I’m just a fan cause this game grabbed me from go. Best Sephora I have played since the original Risen. The 3 factions give the game complete replay ability. These guys make the only game where I always feel like part of the world. If you can nail that which they always do everything else is topping. I honestly can’t think of a single complaint I have. I’m at work atm and can’t wait to jump back into the game. I guess I’m just lucky to enjoy it so much. Whatever floats your boat 👨👩👧👧❤️

I personally love rpg's that give you actual choice with a deep quest/faction system and Elex does that well. The game world is beautifully designed and great to explore with the jet pack. The combat is not perfect but challenging and offers many different playstyles. This game does not hold your hand and is pretty hardcore especially on ultra difficulty but I enjoy the challenge. I like the trainer based leveling system and the many different ways you can build your character. The deep dialogue/reputation system is great but the translation from german to english is not perfect and the writing isn't either. This is certainly not a AAA game but it is a return to form for German developer Pirahna Bytes. There is no microtransactions and no season pass so the game really is not that expensive and offers a lot of content. I am having fun but PB games aren't for everyone. Personally I love it.

nope, the game is garbage. The patch barely unlocked the 45 fps lock on 90% of the places. For no reason. The combat is cancer. The items are shit, the inventory is garbage but then again, it's a cheap console trash game.

Falcon, I really like your reviews, but this video is kinda bad.
This is a huge RPG, but not comparable with Skyrim, Fallout or Witcher. It has it's own atmosphere, it's own way of storytelling. Sure, not everyone likes it...I think you should show the good and the bad sites of the game. You emphasized the bad things, but where are all the good? The story, the enormous detailed world, huge amount of quests, the skill system, the living environment...
For me it sounds like you've played the game 2 hours and had too much expectations. But you've only seen a little crumb of the cake.
Not giving the game the chance it deserves is simply not fair.
Guys, I enjoy this game and I can totally recommend it, if:
- you like a huge single player experience with much love for details
-high end graphic isn't really important for you
-you can look over a bad combat-system

Artcart the first couple hrs of this game I didn’t like it because I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing but now I’ve finally got passed that grind and the game is opening up greatly. I still don’t like the risen system where you have to pay trainers to upgrade your skills but I like the game better than risen because you don’t have to pay money to learn how to roll

He literally only compared the combat, the weakest link in the Witcher 3. Elexs combat is slow, and kinda clunky, but the witchers is smooth, and free flowing. They'll improve it on the update, but Elexs combat is lackluster at best for me, and I understand Falcons Complaints with the game as well

I love the witcher series but I wish people would stop comparing every game to it. Witcher's combat is really easy and gets boring after while. It's redeeming quality is the amazy stories cd project red tells. Honestly, cyberpunk 2077 looks like it's gonna be way better than the witcher especially because the combat looks amazing.

I like older RPGs for the most part. I miss having lots of detailed conversations with lots of different choices. Many games today have taken to simplifying dialogue options because the developers feel that directional choice (Mass Effect's dialogue wheel, Fallout 4's weird 4-way dialogue system, etc) is easier on controllers than scrolling through lists. While that certainly may have been the case when the original Mass Effect game came out, it seems like tons of developers have opted to go in this direction. Bioware switched Dragon Age's system to be more like it's other child, Bethesda did weird things to Fallout 4 to appeal to fans of shooters like take away stat based dialogue checks aside from charisma as well as stream line the story to make you the good guy no matter what (either a saint or a begrudging sarcastic good guy but a good guy nonetheless). That being said, better combat engines have made me expect better combat I won't lie about that. And I don't want to spend hours listening to my dialogue choices if none of them are significant or if the other person is just droning on and on. If you're feeling nostalgic for RPGs of the past and don't mind turn based combat, then I suggest Divinity: Original Sin and its recently released sequel. They scratch that itch and they do it very well.
i paid £45 and I love it.. I haven't experienced frame rate drop. combat starts off feeling slow and clunky but as you learn how to fight it becomes more fluid. yep the talking is boring and the graphics aren't that great. the story seems solid, each area is different with all kinds of places to explore each faction seems to have an internal war happening in which you have to choose a side. you can kill anybody that you want to (it changes the story drastically) and the only loading screens you get are when you load in, die or fast travel so for a game this size I'm impressed. a game so well put together by a tiny game developer and all I see is negative reviews. if you guys like rpg's then you should buy this if you don't then maybe you should try one.
It does bring one thing that I haven't seen in any other game. The attribute/skill points are separate from leveling up. Sure, you get 10 attribute points and a skill point every time you level up, but you can also craft potions that raise your attributes and skills as well.

It feels like the guy just really didn't like the game and was looking for stuff to complain about. It's an RPG with heavy focus on the role-playing aspect so yeah, if you want to, you can talk to a lot of NPCs. They tell you what you need to know about them and give you background for why their quests matter and why you should help them. It makes sense unless you grew up in the era of "fetch me 10 boar asses" quest GPS systems.
There's combat everywhere in the game too, so I'm almost convinced all the dude did is the first few tutorial steps and visiting the berserkers. Kind of disappointing as far as reviews go.

I'm just out there shooting poison at the group so they all target me and my mage can cast spells. I charge in, strive to the side to avoid the enemies charge and dash out some hits, roll away and fly up before the alpha raptor rips off my head. The raptors hiss at me in the air, I'm waiting for the right time.
Then boom I come down with my flaming two hander smashing on 2 of them knocking them on the ground, I dodge another claw attack and execute 1 raptor with a combo
The others used that time tho and slice my back twice before I manage to get distance. I need to back out and heal, I run leaving my girl with them.
After healing I use some spells while getting close and finish them off with the mage now going melee.

Dude, you obviously stopped listening pretty early in the game (since you're complaining about the game having too much dialogue), because one of the very first characters you meet tells you all about the factions and he clearly explains, that technology wasn't lost. Instead people of the medieval looking faction made the decision to get rid of all forms of technology and signs of modernity and they even developed a hardcore anti-tech stance, which influences their behaviour towards you based on your gear, weapons, dialogues and actions. So if you say the high-tech and medieval stuff doesn't go together, you haven't understood, that this world has wildly different factions and the way they look and conduct themselves is a conscious choice on their part.
This game is typical Piranha Bytes, but it's more like Gothic than Risen (thankfully). Piranha Bytes' games always have a focus on central european audiences, where Elex is much more popular than in the US or elsewhere outside of Europe. Americans are used to shallow, flashy grinding and claptrap. This game doesn't try to deliver that.
It would be interesting if the architecture was futuristic with medieval materials, as if they lost all the tech but kept some of the culture

Rise he's in the berserker village. They BASE their culture around midevil times because they despise tech and everything about it. They live simple lives use bows and so on. The clerics however embrace tech. They live in a volcano with mechs, robots, drones and brain washing. The outlaws are kind of in between I think. But the berserker peeps build everything that way. In the domed city all the factions come together. And in the berserker areas the buildings are the same. Its just how they are. I think he either didn't pay attention or didn't play very far. The psi powers are awesome. This game is really good

You didn't talk about the gameplay at all, how the quests are, factions and their agendas, story, is there crafting in the game? Survival elements? ("Cold Increased" prompt at 2:15), how's the levelling system? How's the magic system? Shooting mechanics? Can you take cover behind objects when wielding guns? What kind of weapons are there?

It's not about the quantity of dialogue/exposition. It's all about how that is delivered.
If it's presented with character then it captivates the player, but Elex delivers 99% of dialogue in such a flat and dull way, even just 2 lines of dialogue is so mind numbingly boring it simply isn't interesting. Kinda sets the theme for the entire game, sadly - uncaptivating, dull, flat, and entirely unappealing.

This might seem weird, but I actually do occasionally enjoy games that feel retro, in both the good and bad sense. Even though the combat feels dated, I kind of want that sometimes. I want games that feel like they were from the early-to-mid-2000s. That era brought us some of the best RPGs and it's fun to revisit that time through a brand new experience.

The measure of a good game is based off of the pros vs the cons i.e a good game is considered good when the pros make up for the cons, so taking a con in one game and comparing it to a con in another game to somehow justify it, is moot if the game youre comparing it too is fkin shit in almost every other aspect as well lmao. Skyrim has bad combat, this is known, but skyrim has pros that heavily outweigh its cons... elex... well elex is the exact opposite now isnt it, just like risen.... and yes, just like gothic.

Didn't have a single clip of the game past the first hour or 2 of play. Literally everything showed here is the tutorial for the game. He still has the intro weapon, didn't even pick up one of the two axes you literally walk by in the intro. Also, haven't had any bugs or frame-drops. I'm 20 hours in and this game is a blast. Never played a Piranha Bites games in my life. Highly recommend.

I've had 2 crashes and regular frame drops (nothing unplayable though) on PS4 but I pretty much grew up on playing high end games on a shitty PC so I'm use to it, other than that I absolutely love the game.

The first "Before you buy" i really disliked. You didnt explained what in your opinion are the flaws, spread some false facts and seemed to be a bit salty. This game isnt for everyone i get it. Gothic 2 is one of my all time favorites and im also german, which also pushes me a bit in a fanboy position. But I really like the game, i think the scenario is intresting, the quests got some really cool twists and i also like the conversations. Sure its not everbodys cup of tee, and they are obvious flaws like the fight system, but if you are into Rpgs, this game definitly worth a try :)

well i'm playing it and I like it although like you said it does have it's flaws. however after hearing about EA's actions today, i'm starting to think I should grab up all the solo player rpg's I can find. with all these multiplayer, micro transaction, cash grab games the rage now solo rpg's may become a thing of the past soon. :( Also there is some Gothic nostalgia going on with me too. :) )

Honestly, having finished Gothic 2, 6 times now, I wanted this kind of gameplay and this kind of weird, clunky, hard to master combat system. If Gothic and Risen are having no new releases, I hope they will still continue with Elex. I hope these types of games will never ever die.

My favourite part of the game so far, every time you walk off a ledge and the character goes stiff and just drops.
This isn't a bad game, I've never played a piranha bites game before but this is what I expected. Combat takes a bit of getting used to, but enemies have attack patterns that you need to learn or you'll get your ass whooped.
I'm not sure this deserved such a negative sounding before you buy. But I'm personally enjoying playing it. Long ass conversations with NPC's and all.

The game isn't bad, it's amazing at what it wants to achieve, which is being a walk-and-talk simulator in a beautiful open world, if you don't like talking to characters and making decisions and just want combat like any other RPG it's not for you. Falcon clearly didn't understand that. It was never meant to be about the combat.

I don't know about hay but i do know about reed for roofing and it's pretty durable, easy to procure so fairly cheap. Free even if you live near a lake and cut it yourself. I know that is in demand for export from where i live, to be used in home building wall insulation as an ecological alternative that actually preforms better than styrofoam.
So i guess using hay for their roof means they are pretty advanced :) Not to mention that it would probably be easier to find and use that material rather than other "modern" options. They probably build homes only by hand without heavy machinery so it makes sense.
This game takes place a long time after the comet hit. Also the faction that has straw roofs believe technology should be thrown away. So they choose a more simple lifestyle, They refuse to use guns because it's against there beliefs. I personally like soaking up all the lore from any game so i like all the explanations. This was my first piranha bytes game and I love it! Like falcon said it's really up to your gaming preferences.

'Architexture' lol, actually thatch roofs would be perfectly viable in a post apocalyptic world, if the climate was cold it would retain heat well, since the alternative would be to use a complicated system of insulation to keep the house warm of for people to live in shacks which wouldn't be suitable. In the UK people still build cottages with thatch roofs in the countryside, although it's less common. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I get the impression from this analysis that a game is not worthy if it doesn't bring anything to the table. The game does have its flaws just like any other game but it also has systems that were meant to be that way and are not flaws like some people would like to perceive them. That's the thing with Piranha Bytes, they're often misunderstood. They often don't change what works for them and that's why all of their games like Gothic, Risen, and Elex, play very similar. I think it's reasonable to say that games by Piranha Bytes is an acquired taste. Either you are going to love it or hate it. I'm never disappointed with PB because in general I know exactly what I'm signing up for. Their rpg games are traditional, slow-paced with a lot of dialogue, and with little hand holding.

You're all giving them so much shit, though you came to their channel for the review. Clearly gameranx is a channel you watch on the regular, or else you wouldn't be here ignorantly bashing the team that has brought you hundreds of amazing videos before this. Take a few steps back, calm yourselves (because I bet this is a game you'll avoid regardless of who says what) and watch some previous before you buys until you realize that gameranx is still your favorite channel.
The game is amazing, fun, and for me - addicting. I have played hundreds of games since the Atari 2600 days. The game isn't perfect, though no game is. The game reminds me of Shadowrun, what with the sci-fi mixed with fantasy going on. I have a lot of games in my queue, though I keep coming back to ELEX.

Pretty half heartedly made video sorry Falcon :/ more info on elex: there are 4 major factions (3 which you can join) 2 futuristic 1 kind of mad max and 1 lives in wooden huts because instead of using the bad "technologie" they replenish the wasteland with mana instead of elex (the resource). So no this game doesn't have a thematically weird setting or people it has many themes and many settings.
That being said the game is alot of walking, talking and exploring (you do get fast travel points) but you actually have meaningful dialogue options that either get you killed, someone else killed or leave you with a fat bounty or nothing at the end, and you gotta level up many different talents for dialogue-checks compared to something like fallout 4 which (for the most part) only needs charisma.
You don't start the game strong and with a huge skillset like the witcher 3 your character has trouble killing fat mutant rats and most other enemies are obstacles that you're sloowly working towards beating, going from "this mutant dog thing is impossible to kill" to "hey i think i can take this on now!", around hour ~40-50 maybe you'll see yourself killing giant ass mechs with shotguns, rifles, sword&shield, magic, energy weapons, rocket launchers or whatever you like! You gotta earn everything from armors which need you to get high ranks in a faction or weapons which are locked behind stat requirements so no shortcut to being a badass :)
All that said this game does have a huuuge wind up time and "simple" combat kinda like a souls game (roll dodge block hit when enemy is open) buuut it feels alot less refined like those games, so be careful :D

After about 15 hours of the game I have yet to really encounter much dialogue that I would consider "meaningful", or at least by 15 hours into the game I am already so sick and tired of listening to people talk that I couldn't care less what they actually have to say at this point; yeah your dialogue choices make a difference such as one causing a fight to the death and the other resulting in a completely different outcome, but it's as Falcon said; that's nothing new and a ton of other games have done that as well as doing other things, like combat, sooo much better (most notably The Witcher 3, the Fallout games, Mass Effect, etc). The dialogue honestly hurt my enjoyment of this game a lot more than anything else, because every single person you talk to drones on, and on, and on, explaining in a very uninteresting, chronological fashion their entire life story. Also, Fallout 4 (as with the other Bethesda games) has tons of dialogue options that require stats other than Charisma, and playing a character with high Strength vs high Intelligence results in a lot of quests having different outcomes; what you said on that front is just outright untrue.
Also, it would have made much more sense within the world if the Berserkers had a bit more modern wooden architectural style, especially considering one of the buildings they are using is a very modern concrete building, OR, at the very least, a real-world history inspired look rather than the generic fantasy, even kind of elvish looking, style. Visually, It definitely feels much more out of place in the world compared to the other factions.
Tbh, even if he left those things out, I come to see the gameplay also. Those things you put in does not give someone like me, who even knows people who were excited for the game, want to buy it. It looks like if THQ did Fallout 3 and put magic in it. It doesn’t look very strong to me and I very much agree that for a $60 game, it doesn’t give me much reason to want to buy it. I’ve played a few THQ games and if it moves and plays like their other games I will take a pass on it.

Everything everyone can say about the game is going to be extremely subjective and based on their own personal experience. There is no such thing as an objective game review, and there is no such thing as having an "objective focus" on a game. The things that stood out to him as good or bad in his experience of the game are not going to be the same things that stand out to you. There is nothing "bad" about him making a recommendation based on his experiences, simply because his opinion is different than yours.
Regardless of the point of the game, and without going through some roundabout process of changing your frame of mind or taking into consideration the history of the particular studio (as if that somehow affects your enjoyment of the game), what matters is how the experience of playing the game stands on it's own. Falcon clearly didn't enjoy it, so he didn't recommend it, and gave his explanation as to why it wasn't enjoyable to him. Wording things with the intent of leading others to believe that what you say is objective is dishonest at best. Video game reviews are not, and have never been, about anything other than personal experiences.
We can only experience things from our own subjective point of view; anyone who claims to be able to see things from a truly objective standpoint is simply wrong.
There's a reason why they build houses like they do. There's tons of dialogue on the specific subject. And I'm pretty sure it's available as soon as you reach the Berserker town aswell...
The heavy dialogue is something this studio is known for, so this is nothing new. If you've played their previous games, this shouldn't come as a shock to you. They're known to focus on rich story and mixing folklore and fairytales with lots of lore.
Also, calling this a AAA game is just wrong.. PiranhaBytes is a small small studio, and have always been small. They don't rely on media and big campaigns to hype their games, they never have. You'd know this if you'v played any of the Gothic or Risen games. They spend what little they have on development only.
And "bringing something new to the table" has never been their "thing". They found a structure that works, and they've stuck to it since the beginning. Rich story, dialogue heavy, clunky combat that evolves, and factions and reputations. This has stayed the same throughout ALL their games, and they know it. That's their thing. They never claim to revolutionise anything. They have a fanbase and cater to them. Wether that's wrong or right for you, is up to you completely.
Also the framerate drops? I haven't experienced that once in this game, and it's been stuck on the highest settings since day 1. This might be something specific to certain GPU's or "bad computers", but certainly not on mine.
I think you're aware of most of these points, most likely adressing them for newcomers to the genre.. Still, I felt the need to mention them (with facts in mind).
for anyone that having problems with fighting. You need to hit at the moment the blue bar is filling to max for a combo.
Why compare the game with the wicther game it like comparing dead island and dying light both good games but play different from each other in different ways. Like in elex yes the combat is a bit slow but there also a lot to do like explore the wasteland not knowing what over the next hill or the feeling of is that going to hurt me the freedom is there for you the player to make that choice. At the same time yes there are bugs but dose no one remember skyrim day one not saying both games are the same but skyrim was broken for a lot of people but still got game of the year. At the end of this the game just fun not sure if it's just me but am enjoying the game and hope more people play the game elex

I feel in love with this game! Does it have jank? Yes it does but the kind of jank that I love! The writing in this game is superb and all that dialogue is interesting and fleshes out the world. It feels really lived in. The combo of post apocalyptic, sci Fi and fantasy is so unique and works well. This is my first piranha bites game and now I'll be doing a deep dive into all their games!
I love how one of the first go to things to judge this game was they used hay to build their roofs lmao
I picked this up recently for around $20
I absolutely hated it for the first 4 hours
Had no idea what I was doing, just took off into the wilderness because I kept getting yelled at for opening up my menu. Died probably 500 times because of the bugs and oh my god don’t even get me started with the bugs. I’ve never played such a clunky game before. Anyways with that said
I’m about 15 hours in now, and I freaking love this game. Still broken, but I am absolutely hooked. You just have to learn to adapt to its world and once you do there is so much to discover and experience. From random merchants getting ambushed to “Mrcupcake will remember that” leaving me feeling like I make an impact on the world
Opening the menu = Using tech = TECH BAD
No loot boxes, no micro transactions, no season passes. Few things needs moding, but over all, it's your game, your world, you're the king in the castle.
If you truly put gameplay and immersion over graphics, that's game for you.

Hells man, the first page of it's wiki has more information than this. I wanted a review with gameplay... not a whiney man who thinks every game should be high adrenaline 100% of the time...
Honestly I really like this game. The game encourages exploration through not only the dialogue but through running through the world trying to figure out what the hell is going on. The game is all about choosing what you want to do and how you want to play, and it really bugs me how you brought attention to the straw houses when literally you are in the home of the faction that is like "you know what fuck technology" I feel like this is a review of a dude who got stuck after the first 3 hours and didn't wanna play anymore because "its too hard". This game is great, its a simple RPG that doesn't try and do anything fancy, it just gives you a new world to explore and roam around in and love. Sure the MELEE combat is a bit clunky, but the ranged combat is fluid and easy to use. I really feel like you didn't get past the first few missions and just started crying about it like half the people on the Elex steam page and subreddit. Honestly if you like lore and RPG games I say pick this up.

What’s really annoying is the few people that like the game and are here legitimately getting their feelings hurt because falcon gave a brutally honest review. I doubt it was “too hard” these guys play and talk about games for a living. Just weird to see people get this worked up because someone has a conflicting opinion on a game you like.
I’d also like too mention that just by looking at this video seeing the combat ,the graphics ,the character models , that clunky ass heads up display /life bar… idk man if you play games a decent amount you kind of pick up this sense of “ehh that looks generic” and that’s the vibe I get from this video too be fair. Nothing wrong with liking it but chill dude it’s pretty obvious it’s a “meh” game at best
Yes !!! There are different types of People in the Game that have different technologies !!!! The least advanced rely on Magic right up to the most Advanced that use Fighting Robots !!!! I think it's an interesting world with nice Graphics !!!!!

Idk I guess I’m just a fan cause this game grabbed me from go. Best Sephora I have played since the original Risen. The 3 factions give the game complete replay ability. These guys make the only game where I always feel like part of the world. If you can nail that which they always do everything else is topping. I honestly can’t think of a single complaint I have. I’m at work atm and can’t wait to jump back into the game. I guess I’m just lucky to enjoy it so much. Whatever floats your boat 👨👩👧👧❤️
