I had this syndrome for almost 5 weeks and watched a lot of videos about it. But this video is by far the best one. Super informative. Straight to the point. Just for the people suffering the same injury. Some tips: 1. Please be patient. 2. Listen to what is said in this video 3. Don't bother watching any other one (except for ways to strengthen the Glutes Medius) 4. Go for a physiotherapist.
I come from a biomedical background with basic understanding of anatomy and I cannot articulate enough how helpful this video has been- straight to the point, well structured and the information can be understood and appreciated across all levels of understanding.. I think this might explain some of the pain I have been experiencing- best of luck I have subscribed 👍
Have you been thinking , like me , of a lateral meniscus ? And do you also experiencing hip pain ? You had a mri ?...I ll have one in a few days ...my housedoctor thought of a meniscus 🤔
I’ve had knee pain in the past mainly dull from walking long distances, and sometimes sharp pain in that area when doing squats or leg extensions. I had walked about 5 miles today at work in new shoes I got for christmas and I felt fine most of the day. By the end of my shift I was in excruciating pain in that exact spot where the IT band is on my left knee. I struggled to walk to my car in the parking lot and couldn’t wait to sit down. I’ve been in bed now for a while trying to massage the area. I suspect I have a slightly longer leg than the other. Thank you for this video it helped me to understand more of what I’m dealing with
Best explanation for a particular condition. Very precise and to the point. I wish Dr. Bellemans keeps posting videos to his channel. Though there might be less subscribers I am sure the views will be high. This will be my first go to channel if I suffer from any orthopedic issues in future.
Professors love cutting you up ... I have fixed a very problematic issue having bow legs and a leg length discrepancy . And I did it naturally . Foot orthotics . Stretches and exercises to balance the hips up and strengthening the surrounding muscles of the knee and hips .
I appreciate the wealth of knowledge that was put into this video. Recently started having pain on the outside of my left knee that resulted in reduced physical activities. Can't wait to get back! Thanks again!
Wonderful resources, I am really hoping you expand this library, medial knee issues, and even though Knees are your speciality, opinions on ankle mobility issues and hips, etc that contribute to knee problems would be great. Really love the way you explain and give the breakdowns.
I suffered from IT band syndrome pain on my knee and thanks to the information on this and other videos I was able to do the exercises and treat myself. I changed my shoes and did the rehab plus meds and ice and I'm way way better off now. I just have to really put it to the test later this month
@@ProfBellemans Is it possible piriformis syndrome on the opposite side has created the itb problem? It seems I have a number of problems all linked with the hipnarea
@@petevernon8549 Yes Pete, that is a possibility. We will address the piriformis syndrome in a future video, but I can already confirm that a piriformis syndrome will have an influence on hip dynamics and subsequently may have a negative impact on the ITB. In that case, make sure you get the piriformis well under control (which is not always easy).
Great stuff! I’ve had runner’s knee for several years now, and it was only when I started stretching and specifically targeting the gluteus medius that I could do long distance running without pain. Unfortunately it still appears after a certain number of miles, but I’ll try some of the other treatments in this video and see if they help. Specifically foam rolling and checking if the leg that hurts is longer than the other. Very informative, thank you!
Brilliant - I have watched loads of videos but yours made the most sense, had a great test and had potential solutions. Fantastic and I will start with the insole. Only those that really know what they are talking about can me make is sound easy. Thanks very much
I have this pain on the side on knee for a couple weeks and its not going away even after resting. Now, I know what to do fix it. Thank you very much for info. I can't wait to start running and exercising again.
I think I found the cause of my pain and weird feeling in my leg/knee, the symptoms are basically all there, and the pain it’s located right where this video shows, this was so helpful, hopefully I’m not wrong and I can treat myself to get back on track!
Thank you Prof. Bellemans, I'm a medical student from Germany and I've been suffering from this condition for quite a while. I hope to be able to "treat myself" with the help of your advice. If I had one wish for a subsequent video I'd be very interested in the condition of (hereditary) shoulder laxity and especially measures/treatment/training to improve shoulder joint stability and actively prevent damage to the shoulder joint by ongoing misalignment of the humerus head. Best regards from Hamburg
What about lateral pain and popping after lateral meniscus trim . Dumbest thing i've ever done. It's been 16 months since surgery and still in pain and popping. Tried gel shots also and didn't work . Pain is almost directly in area of lateral meniscus and the doc only took a small trim because another doc told me it's almost same size with latest MRI . Thanks and good channel !
This kind of information is what every doctor should give their patients regarding this syndrome. I've had this for several months now, I've been to the doctor twice and to 18 sessions of physical therapy in between, and they never explained this to me. By the way, I'm still not fully recovered but I feel that if I had known this before hand it would've made everything a lot easier.
Wow...great stuff. I am bow legged, and I suspected that might be causing my IT band issues. I am waiting on insoles I ordered which I am hoping will help, along with more regular stretching. Thanks so much for your very helpful video.
I am suffering from 3 yrs no phystherpy helped n no doctor is suggesting for suregy but I suffering from pain everyday every step I walk, felt quite good after seeing this that yes finally I found exactly what happening with me. Now will try to consult a doctor for surgery
I think newer research has shown an interacted fat pad in the knee that is also involved in the pain since the tight ITB puts increased pressure in that as well
This was very clearly explained. Thank you so much for taking the time to prepare this video. I understand the condition much better and understand that my slightly varus knees is making me more susceptible of getting the ITBS. I was wondering why my friends who would cycle the same distance as me did not have any problems. I will try to do the suggested exercises to strengthen the gluteus muscles.
This was perfect .. thank you! There are so many knee braces on the market, which works best for day to day life and/or for workouts with ITB? Five months of this and counting for me
Great video! Now I know I developed pain here! I have been wearing an aircast for 9 weeks on my opposite leg due to a fracture foot. Now I will see if it goes away now that my foot is out of the cast. Thanks.
Most understandable explanation on knee pain compared to other videos.. Very much helpful.. By understanding it now I can plan more effective way of running and stretching.. Thank you
Thank you Prof. Bellemans! Your video and detail explanation are very useful and helpful for me to understand what is going on with my knees and how I should do next. Thanks again!
Hey! Great video, really appreciate it. Is there any correlation between ITB friction syndrome and pain behind the knee? I've had friction on the IT-band for a couple of years, and the pain has always been located where you showed in the video. But recently pain has also started to occur behind my knee after I've been on a long hike in the mountains, after skiing and after training legs. Pain also occurs behind the knee when I'm contracting the hamstring, specifically when my leg is fully extended. If there isn't a correlation, please forward me to a video which covers pain behind the knee. Thanks in advance! :)
@@Zannathin I can recommend Athlean-x's videos on IT-band syndrome. The movement and stretches he present have dramatically reduced my pain within a week!
Is this common after knee arthroscopy? I had chondroplasty and I now have this issue while I am healing. I hope it is just from swelling and it will go away?
SO HELPFUL! Especially the moving diagram/examples of the ITB crossing over with flexion. I've been experiencing lateral knee pain when hiking (particularly downhill). My PT has recommended glut med and foot exercises but its been on going for nearly a year and I hunting for more info/exercises. I will try those hip drops.

Heel interessant! Sommige bronnen suggereren dat je IT-band op zichzelf niet kan stretchen, maar enkel de spieren die aangehecht aan deze IT-band. Klopt dit professor?
Good point. The discussion is somewhat theoretical, since the final goal is to reduce tension in the overall iliotibial tract. Whether this occurs most effectively through muscle and/or fibrous tract stretching is less important, and probably variable from athlete to athlete depending on several factor such as intrinsic collagen quality, muscle tightness, etcetera...

Fantastic explanation - I have subscribed. I am an amateur cyclist and am experiencing pain on the lateral side of the knee - about an inch or two below the knee. Feels like IT band pain but it is below the knee. I seem to feel it as I rotate my foot. Is there an equivalent friction syndrome here? Could it be where the IT band actually attaches at the knee? Thanks so much!
