      The logic of "supporting X company also supports this stuff" while its technically right, it falls apart when you realize if you apply it everywhere you eventually end up not being able to use anything at all. Because all companies suck in one way or another, and it's just up to us and govenrmental structures to pressure them to improve.

    While it is certainly possible that the DMA was a big fumble, I think people fail to understand that DMA actions take time. As far as I understood, Apple (and other gatekeepers) have 12 months after the initial decision by the EU to adjust their course. This means that we could have to wait until the beginning of 2025 to actually see the EU slapping a huge fine on Apple. Also, the EU opened new investigations on the "core technology fees" and the other malicious compliance decisions Apple has made. It's just too early to say the DMA was a fumble.

    • @detdeet
      @detdeet 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Apple's fee does not violate the DMA in any way, they are allowing other app stores to exist on their devices, that's all the DMA required of them, they said nothing of payment processing

    • @fildet
      @fildet 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@detdeet The DMA decision did say something about payment processing. While Apple's revenue split is not in violation, effectively forcing users and developers to use Apple's payment processing is in violation of the DMA . Their current proposed compliance where developers can link to external payment solutions are also found to be possibly in violation of the DMA because of how restricted they are and because Apple still wants a cut of that money. So while the DMA doesn't technically cover Apple's 30% cut on App Store payments, it will hopefully end up forcing Apple into adopting less restrictive practices when it comes to allowing developers to advertise alternative pricing outside of the App Store. And if that happens, Apple's insane revenue share will be less of an issue for situations like the one in this video.

    • @386enhanced
      @386enhanced 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@detdeet It's not that, it's that Apple HAS to allow other payment processors ASIDE from their own, circumventing the fee, they CANNOT force their own payment processor with a hefty 30% cut.

    so the Patreon app can't mention there's a cheaper alternative to Apple Pay, but surely the Patreon creator can message their supporters (filtered by pay method) to say "thanks for subscribing, but you can save money / give me more money if you use the website", not to mention in the videos/content a supporter sees before subscribing on Patreon
    I hope this blows up in Apple's face and costs them a lot of goodwill for very little financial gain

    Suggesting you want to boycott the App Store to hurt Apple also hurts creators. Without an alternative revenue stream, and an alternative delivery platform, app developers are beholden to Apple, and that's a monopoly. Legislators/regulators should have acted years ago. We may be coming up against hard limits on how hardware can be innovated on, but when it comes to software, Apple consistently under achieve because their walled garden allows them too. Apple are now firmly in the territory previously occupied by IBM and Microsoft.

    In these cases, Apple should charge their 30% from what the app producer takes, not from the whole initial sum.
    So if Twitch has 30%, then for a $10 subscription, Twitch takes $3 aka 30% of $10
    Then Twitch has to give 30% of its share to Apple, which would be 30% of $3 = $0.90, leaving Twitch to actually take only $3 - $0.90 = $2.10
    To mitigate this, Twitch can then say that on mobile they take 40%. It sucks a bit, but much less than what's now:
    The Twitch + Apple share is now $4, while the creator takes only $6. A bit of a bummer to lose 1/7 = 14% of the income as the creator, but ... such is life.
    Twitch then gives 30% of $4 to Apple, which totals to $1.20. And Twitch itself remains with $2.80, 6-7% less than original, but affordable, I'd say.
    On top of that, the content creator can also take 10% or 20% more on mobile.
    If it's 20% more, than the initial sum is $12. Creator takes $7.20 out of that.
    Twitch + Apple take $4.80. Which means that Apple takes $1.44 and Twitch remains with $3.36.
    So probably, a fairer increase would be 15%. And it would allow both the creator and Twitch to have roughly the same income (too lazy to also compute this scenario).
    As it is right now, this increase has to be probably something like 40%, in order for both the creator and Twitch to get abuot the same income. Except that either the creator gets less or Twitch gets more or a bit of both, because the percentages are much different now. Thanks Apple!
    I can't see an argument of why Apple needs to get a cut from the creator. That's totally just Twitch's work. Twitch does all the server handling (which, for video and streaming, it both complicated and costly). And it's also Twitch that does the coding. And promoting of the creators.
