Thank you very much for doing this topic! The Theofanidis is such a jewel of a piece and definitely a worthy Grammy winner. BTW I didn't know Richard O'Neill is now part of Takács Quartet. Have to check out how he's playing in a string quartet.
Viola KIIIIIING!!! Nice video as always. Can’t you show some clips and analyze them? I understand if you don’t want to incur unnecessary wrath from Grammy lawyers, but I thought it fell under fair use. Love how you talk about evoking different tones and emotions. How do you feel the viola is different from the cello in that way?
Did you mention who the first violist to win a Grammy was? I tried Googling but came up empty. I wonder if Amihai )or some other violist) would have won had he been the one to play the Theofanadis concerto...
Kim Kashkashian is the first violist to have won a Grammy for best classical instrumental solo. James does mention it in the video. Note: When I tried to Google Kim's name to check the spelling, Google automatically changed "violist" to "violinist". Bah.
@@elissahunt There you go. I knew James was too thorough to have missed out mentioning but it was too late for me to re-watch the video (I was watching a Bach Birthday Bash concert >1hr long). Thanks!
@@nicolasscaraboto8355 Yes, but he won as a conductor the Grammy for "Small Ensemble Performance". Besides, Vengerov won a Grammy solo award partly for his Walton Viola Concerto.
VJOTD: two violinists meet on the street, they haven’t seen each other since a long time. One of them is holding a viola case. The other looks at him and asks horrified: “ what happened to you? Did you have a stroke?”
Viola king > two set violin. Specially cause he plays Viola 🎻👑

Thank you for this perspective, it’s very interesting!
Thanks so much for sharing great video
O'Neill really brings out the beauty of viola tone, although I'm a contemporary pianist but it's interesting to know these fact!

I love that you’re a keyboard gang as well (I just assume, because I saw a keyboard behind you)

If I'm not wrong, Yuri Bashmet won a Grammy.

Kashkashian is amazing though!

We need new music for viola beyond classical and pop. It can do anything and everything.like the recorder
I. Love. Richard. O’Neill.
he is just the best
and I’m not a violist
