- A demo video of two different ways to play the traditional tune 'Out on the Ocean' on the viola. The first version is a solo version, arranged to be best suited to the instrument; the second is for playing along with other instruments which usually use a key that isn't so viola-friendly, e.g. in a session or ceilidh band. There is digital sheet music for this tune available from www.folkviola.... .

Two Ways to Play 'Out on the Ocean on the Viola'
Version 1: Solo viola version.
If the viola is the only melody instrument (e.g. if you're just playing with a guitarist, or solo) the best key for this tune on a viola is C major.
This is transposed down a 5th from the original key of G, so you play the same fingerings as you would on a violin.
BUT!
If you want to play along with other musicians in a traditional music session, the tune will be played in the original key of G.
Here's how you can play along with violin players and other instruments in this key, while staying in 1st position on the viola...
Version 2: Session Version
The first section of this tune does not go onto the violin's E string, so can be played at the original pitch on the viola. You can do this if you want to blend in with the violins.
The second section goes up onto the E string on the violin, so if you want to avoid shifting to 3rd position, you can play it an octave lower on the viola.
The viola can also play the first section an octave lower.
This maintains the original shape of the tune, with a lower pitched first section and higher second section.

i love this! i'm considering getting a viola to go with me to sessions to slow me down a bit. I've been playing the irish and scottish fiddle for 22 years (i'm 29 now) and i love octave dropping so i think a viola might fare well

I’m an Irish fiddler, and I learned how to play the viola for Irish music in late 2014 (I was looking for a cello and found a viola; go figure! Lol!). I primarily do the second method you showed, playing viola in a lower tone than the violin. In Irish music sessions, I noticed that the viola has a lot of contrast that compliments the music. I also learned about the instruments that compete with the viola (primarily guitars and banjos).

Thanks for posting the lovely low sound of Irish viola .... I made an electronic Irish bagpipe and am looking for TH-cams of Irish instrumentalists to play along with ..... the fiddles are pitched too high , when I play my pipes alongside them I can barely make out which notes are the high-pitched fiddler's and which are my own high pitched notes .... but with the viola playing down low and my pipes playing up high , they sound great together...enough separation between the two instruments to hear everything clearly....

I played fiddles for years and decided to buy a viola ....didn't know how to choose one....picked a pretty one.... well, I could play fiddle tunes on it and loved the sound...but ... it was so much heavier than my violins , it actually put a crink in my neck and caused me pain every time I played it .... I don't know if there are any fancy shoulder holders built for that sort of problem ? I had to sell my viola and vowed if I ever got another one I would look for a light weight one as my main priority LOL

Just started the violin, but the viola has the sound for me. I play mandolin, and when the guitars capo - I just start in the same position. Should be OK on the viola. Mandolin and violin sharing the same string tuning to me is not right. Needs a viola instead - or mandola/violin?
I love the ornamentation on the open A string in the B part of the tune (0:32)-how are you doing that? I can't quite catch it from the video; it sounds like two distinct "flicks" with the left hand but I can't tell if my ears are playing tricks on me!
Hi, yes, what I'm doing is basically two flicks -- third finger and first finger in quick succession, after the open string note has already started. This is kind of like a roll (as described in this video: th-cam.com/video/jjESgPOag0k/w-d-xo.html) but as true rolls aren't possible on an open string due to needing to play one note below (impossible without string-crossing, which would probably sound very clunky), on an open string this is played more like a cran (idiomatic to piping/flute traditions, as described in this video: th-cam.com/video/5AVOHIt8Mvk/w-d-xo.html).
There's a detailed discussion of this ornament on the fiddle here: thesession.org/discussions/226 . However, I'm not sure that what I'm doing is exactly what's described, as I'm playing 0-3-1-0 whereas most examples suggest 0-1-3-1-0 as the pattern. Hope that helps!
