  • In this video I show how I install my concealed electric hook up point behind the false fog light. I also install a mains 240v RCD Consumer unit with a twin gang 240v socket with USB connections (see links below for items). The hook up point can be used at home or on site and just needs the false fog light popping out to access the connection point. On the other side of the light cluster inside the van I have installed the RCD consumer unit. This was a new unit I purchased listed as a garage RCD unit. It has 2x 16A MCB circuit breakers to ensure the electrics are protected at all times. I wire the fridge directly to the RCD on its own breaker and the 240v sockets to the other 16a MCB breaker I scheduled this install to be completed shortly before the van was due to be inspected by a registered motorhome specialist and it was inspected, tested and signed off with no issues raised at all (just like the rest of the inspection). I hope you found the video useful and if so, please Subscribe and rate the video, thanks.

    Very handy video thank you. I spent a while staring at my consumer unit unable to figure out how to wire it up. This really cleared it up. Thanks again 😃

    All good fella. Im going for a similar thing. Only problem your going to have is changing a rear light bulb should it blow. That will be a ball ache with all that stuff in the way. All the best.

    Thanks for the video, can I ask, if adding more sockets, do you need to do a loop like in a house, or can they just be in a line?

    My t4 had the caravan plug hidden behind light.very handy for charging etc at home .have same plug outside house.my mains breaker in a cupboard under sink.but hidden away but leave ganger plug in there.I have 300watts solar on roof and 3 mppt charge controllers an inverter so don’t use mains much on holidays

    Hi, love your videos, have you done a fitting of a leisure battery install. I am wanting to install one in my lwb t4. Would be good to see where cables and batteries are sighted. Thanks and well done 😊

      HI I didn't do a specific battery install video but I believe the install of the hidden wiring switch panel video covers the batteries and fuse board in this build, hope that helps

    Maybe I'm missing something here but how are you going to replace a blown lamp in your tail light without dismantling the MCB unit?

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is a little wriggle room to get your hand in but if it has to come off to change a bulb, its just a couple of screws to remove it and lights maybe get changed every couple of years so no worries for me

    Just come across your video and wondered why you felt the need to earth the 240v to the bodywork ? The 12v van system is ground to the body so if there was a problem you'll potentially risk back feeding 240v AC into 12v Dc

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been fitted as per caravan safety regulations, it doesn't matter about the 12v, earthing the chassis protects against stray wires touching bare metal and causing havok/death. Check online if you need further info, google earthing 240 to chassis

    • @philipmckinney
      @philipmckinney 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the caravan safety regulations also consider the Amendment Number 3 to BS7671:2008? Requiring a metal casing for the consumer unit?

    Great video, gonna give this a go in my elgrand! Already have the hook up wire in just need to do the consumer unit and socket - don't suppose you're in the North East?

  • @Nick23Wood

    Had to watch this twice to keep up with your hyper-delivery :), but still a bit confused. Why do you need to earth it to the van when it is also earthed via the Hook-Up, I would have thought it would be best if the 230V system does not contact the vehicle at all??

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was done on the advice of a motorhome safety engineer who said he expects to see any consumer unit earthed to the body chassis, think its incase are any bare 240v wires touch the van

      You should always bond the incoming earth to the vehicle body otherwise if a fault developed the body could become live!

    Great idea. One question I have would be does the fog light not fail on the doe test as its not in working order?

      I sealed all around the cable entry grommet with mastic tape, it never leaked in the plug in the 2 years I had the van. Maybe seal it closed to be sure

    I would strongly advise that you change the main isolator of the consumer unit with an RCD type trip/isolator. AND instead of having 2no 16amp mcbs have 1no 16amp and 1no 6amp. I could explain but best you ask your local electrician.

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please try and not sound condescending when leaving comments, this van has already been inspected by a caravan safety engineer who was more than happy with what is installed and how its all been fitted. I know exactly why you are stating to fit an RCD and to be honest, I thought thats what was fitted to the unit I ordered at the time of ordering and didn't have enough time to wait for a replacement so fitted what arrived with the view to swap it to an RCD in the future, I also specifically wanted 2x 16a MCB's so I can have the fridge hard wired to 1 (which draws well over 6a) and the other is linked to a plug socket which could be used for anything from a tv to a microwave so reducing that to 6a would not offer enough before cutting out.
