- 240v volt wiring install with consumer unit and all sockets. Also fitting of external hook up to van and internal wiring. All in our Ford Transit Custom Self Build Camper.

Nice to see somebody who cares about safety, I have seen so many people on youtube putting household garage consumer units in vans which is dangerous.That pre wired kit looks just the job.
Ah great yeah thanks. The kit from wired campers is great. I didn’t want to mess about - I had an electrician check it all after too. I personally think there should be some certifications like domestic to be honest.
great set up only thing i would add is maybe a 240v Low profile led light or tube light and tap it to a separate single rcd box or tap it off another feed such as the charger outlet run from a dimmer switch also id look into solar panels and solar charge units this would go nice on the build you have
also for safety strap the battery down so it don't move while driving and keep the gas bottle away from the wire install love how neat that install is
also a 2nd socket at the other side of the van bridge the connection to the double socket so is in parallel

One question though… what is the big blue lever thingy for in the inlet socket ? You don’t mention it at all, but I presume it has some function otherwise it wouldn’t be there ?

Thanks for your comment and checking out the video 👍 The blue “thing” on the inlet is like a clip that secures the plug into the inlet and keeps it secure 👍
Another great video Dave. Just on my wiring now and going through your build series again. They have been a massive help mate, throughout my build, so appreciate all the effort you’ve put in to making them.

Yeah.. hoping to do some more videos.. have some updates I want to do on the van and a few changes plus review of it and what I would do different etc.. been on loads of trips away and van has been brilliant.. it’s used daily as well so getting our money worth! Hey mate, love the videos. You have genuinely inspired me to have a go myself (albeit with a T5)! I just wanted to know the size of the earth cable? I’ve bought all the bits from Wired Campers separately, as the kits weren’t really suitable for my usage. However, they don’t sell the earth cable separately. Cheers!
Ah that’s great to hear thanks! The cable for the 12v negative side was a 6 gauge. I picked up some from Halfords in the end. Good luck with the build on T5 👍 & then happy adventures 😀
I have done all the work to my conversion thanks to your videos. Can I ask if you have hard wired the charger to the leisure battery and is this left on the whole time you are connected to the 240v. Thanks Rob
Hey - yes the battery charger is wired in. Generally when on the hook up we leave it on to keep the 12v side topped up 👍
Me again Dave. 😂Fitting my 240 electric hook up sometime next week. Putting it the same place as yours (side of van) just wondered if you had to cut a hole in the inside ply board that you’ve carpet lined ( the board that you’ve poked your EHU cable through) for the back of the socket? If that’s makes sense? It just looks like it protrudes past the metal skin where the board clips in too. Cheers.
Hey mate 👍 No the ply board went over it ok just made a hole for the cable to come though.. might be a better/cleaner way to route the cable my method was part of least resistance 😀 Hope it all goes well, let me know how you get on 👍

Hey - thanks for the kind comment and checking out the video 👍 This was the kit I got from wired campers - one thing I would check is if your van has a smart alternator.. my 2014 custom did.. if so you would need a DC to DC charger not the split charge relay in this kit - www.wiredcampers.co.uk/collections/custom-work/products/complete-camper-van-electrics-system-12v-240v
Are you using 1.5mm round core flex cable for the sockets ? Also what is the minimum size for the earth cable to the chassis
Hi thanks for checking out the video. All the wiring came in the kit supplied as I wanted to make sure it was all sound 👍 But yes the sisters was 1.5mm 3 core flex cable. The chassis eat the was 16mm 👍 As I mentioned on the video I am not qualified electrician so I would always suggest having anything checked out my a professional too 😀👍
or use self tapper screws and thread lock

Hi sorry if this is a stupid question, but with this set up does it mean that your fridge (which is plugged in to the double socket) will only be getting power when the van is connected to an external 240v mains hook up? If this is the case does that mean whenever you are driving or not hooked up to mains your fridge is not powered and not working?
Hi Peter - thanks for the q and no it’s not a stupid one at all 👍 So I changed my plans on the fridge… initially I was planning a 2 way absorption fridge that I could use on either 240 hook up or once cooled on the 12v side to keep it cool. However, the absorption although cheaper not at efficient so I went for a full 12v compressor fridge in the end. So I can run this off grid just from leisure battery or when on hook up I have a battery charger so keeps 12v side all charged up too. If it was a pure 240 fridge then yes to answer the q would only work on hook up OR if you had an inverter to convert 12v to 240 to run it.. Hope all that makes sense! I have question regarding the earth wire coming out on top of the 240v consumer unit.
where does that wire connected to?
I saw that connecting to the ground plate that you have on there, but then there is a wire coming out to the negative terminal of the battery, does that mean the earth wire of the consumer box is connected to the 12V battery?
Also, are you also connecting the battery charger to the grounding plate, thus directly to the negative terminal of the battery?

Hi - thanks for the comment. This was actually something that when checked out the for 240 was moved direct to the common Earth on the body work of the van 👍 I covered this off in another video too on my “mistakes” below. Also I would say I am an amateur so please get anything checked out yourself too.. We had our install checked after 👍

How long did it take you to do all the wiring, is it about a day or are we talking a week? 🤣🤣👍🏻. Videos are great by the way, really helpful 👍🏻

Hey Chris - thanks for the comment and glad the videos are useful 👍 I didn’t show on any videos but I used a battery tray for the leisure battery. I attached it to ply floor. The consumer unit I attached direct to the side of units just with screws. It’s been in over 12 months now and no issues with either and both stay put 👍 hope that helps - good luck with the build

So does that only work if on a 240v hook up supply??

@@TransitCustomCamper sorry with the 240v you’ve put in does that only work when on a hook up referring to double switches and trickle charge as didn’t see a inverter in the electrical circuit. Seems to be a mine field trying to get dedicated wiring diagrams for split charge to inverter to get both 12v and 240v
@@danscanlon7083 ah OK - so the 240v sockets and switch only works on hook up. But the system I have also includes a smart battery charger so my leisure battery will also get charged up when I am on hook up too. If you wanted to power your 240 without hook up you would need an investor yes. But these are “simple” to connect more or less direct connection to leisure battery and possibly a separate earth to van chassis I believe. They you can run extension form the plug sockets on the inverter to power 240v stuff without hook up… we not sure if we will be going for inverter as not planning any long total off grid stuff… and most things like mobile and tablets can run off the usb 👍
