The steel is CPM S30V, not cheap. The handle material is Grivory, which is the manufacturers name, and is a high performance polyamide (nylon). So whilst it is a ‘plastic’, it is also not cheap. FYI Glock frames are a nylon based ‘plastic’ too.

I believe the name comes from the fact that it is so minimal and lightweight that you will always have it on you in a bugout situation. You are absolutely correct that it's not at all a heavy duty knife, though the strength of the axis lock definitely puts it up to a lot of tasks. It' like the old saying about needing to show up to a gun fight with a gun, at least now you have a knife on you always even if it's not the super best. Side note, i hope you do start to carry brands like BM, Spyderco and ZT. I would totally support my knife addiction through you.

You probably shouldn't baton with a folder of any kind, I don't really ever see a reason to do something like that, if you are out in the wilderness in a survival situation, you should bring a fixed blade with you, and probably a machete or an axe. I know people say "What if you are stranded in the mountains with only a folder with you" That situation has honestly never came up and probably never will for anybody. And if you are in the mountains for some reason having to build a camp out of trees, then you probably shouldn't have brought a bugout with you.
Whenever i'm out in the woods I have a Mora, a large fixed blade machete and an axe with me if I'm camping. I really can't ever think of any time I would ever need to baton wood with a folding knife, there's just no need ever to do it, it's just a TH-cam video demo thing, nobody int he real world ever does that. Even if you only have a folder, you can use that folder to whittle a hardwood splitting wedge/grenade, then baton the splitting wedge/grenade throught he wood you need to split with another larger hardwood branch or log.
It's just a dumb thing to do, even a solid back lock knife can fail on you while using it to baton, so i would never trust an axis lock, I have Benchmade black class tactical folders, and they are way more solid than the bugout, and I wouldn't even baton with those, it's just stupid. There isn't a reason to do it other than showing off on camera, no actual outdoors kinda guy would ever do that off camera, he will just pull out his Hultafors heavy duty, or his Esee, or his Mora Robust or some other fixed blade if he really has to baton some wood, or his camp chopper.

I absolutely love my bugout. Primarily EDC use (open packages, cut an apple, etc). Light outdoor uses include fishing (bait cutting and fish cleaning), camping, game processing (yes, I would gut a deer with this knife), and very light wood cutting. For the weight, it has an extraordinarily generous blade size, and the S30V steel sharpens to a razor edge with very little effort. The price is too high for sure. But, if I lost it tomorrow, and buy another immediately. And agreed, stupid name. I call it my 535.

I watched wrangler stars video and I'm not trying to hate on you but you were not well informed. He didn't buy the knife Benchmade sent it to him as a gift for his kind words toward the 940. He didn't say the plastic was cheap he said it was cheaper than the milled aluminum on his 940 and that he could snap the handle with the pressure of his hands. he did not have any issue with the lanyard hole he had an issue with the open back, in other words, the barrel/pillar spacer construction as opposed to the solid backspacer. He said the gap in the scales pinched and irritated his hand and if you're spending that much on a knife it should have better ergos. If you have a different opinion on something then express it, but know your facts before saying someone else's opinion is wrong.

I quit watching Wranglerstar when he blamed a Fiskars axe for his sister knocking her front tooth out because she was using it incorrectly. Then he went on to dump all over Fiskars because they are not a $200 Gransfors Bruks. The "proper" way of getting something done sometimes is whatever works for you. I got tired of the pompousness.

I am going to say something in defence of plastics. Plastic are very useful material but the type of plastic must be matched to the function it is to perform. Just as each metal alloy must be matched to its expected function. You wouldn’t make a torque wrench out of a gold alloy because it would be too heavy and brittle or too soft depending on which alloy you make. Doesn’t mean that gold alloys are worthless just not suitable as an wrench.

I agree completely with everything you just said. I like Wranglerstar; but his thumbnails are always hyperbolic click-bait! His video titles are infuriating because they are so extreme and often not what he discusses in the actual video. And his content many times is very subjective and comes to conclusions I don't agree with. I find myself watching his stuff less and less over time.
For instance, he made a video once on Machetes as choppers, comparing them to really small hatchets. I know from personal experience that a quality machete will chop far more effectively than a small hatchet. His demonstration of the two side by side was obviously biased. He weakly chopped into the limbs with the machete and used improper angles as if he didn't know how the grain structure worked on wood. Then when he used the hatchet he suddenly remembered to chop into the wood at an angle in a v-shaped pattern. Intellectually dishonest in my opinion.
I know that this video was just about this particular knife both of you reviewed; but I guess my discontent for his channel as of late bubbled up here in this thread LOL.

Bought a reproduction 18th century long knife from Townsends about five years ago. Believe I spent about $35 on it. Good carbon steel, full tang, hickory handle. I've batoned with it, cooked with it at home, used it like a throwing knife like a moron, cut feather sticks, and absolutely abused it. Oil it with olive oil after every use. Holds an excellent edge.
My two EDC knives are both Old Timers. One new and the other having belonged to my grandfather since the 40s.
I just don't understand the tactical, expensive knife craze.

another knife you might want to look into is the Ontario Rat II (with D2 steel). I bought one just as a junk daily carry to take down boxes. now I have 3 of them and love them all.
the Rat II is the smaller of the Rat series. because I have large hands I thought I'd like the Rat I but it feels awkward to me for some reason, maybe I just got used to the smaller version.
they cost about $40 on Amazon. you can do a simple search and find them, I don't want to link it so you'll see the different colors and variations in the lineup. just make sure you get it in D2 steel and not the AUS-8.

Honestly the bugout isn’t a bad name, think about it you want light knives in your bugout bag and your not going to have only one, a fix blade for hard use and the bugout as a light backup and delicate tasks that require are sharp blade. The hiker would have been a better name but bugout sounds cooler and fits it well IMO.

I saw that review as a love affair. He loved this one BM knife and lost it so he thought he could replace it with the bugout and had to tell us all why it wasn’t working for him. Let me tell you about 3 Tammies. I was so 😍 in love with Tammie but I had to break it off. When I met Tammy #2 and #3 it just wasn’t the same. Now it makes no sense in going on about why. I put in a request to be notified when Tammie #1 becomes single. Until then I’m happy with Shelia....she gives great back rubs. LOL. Im really not making fun of him. 1/2 way through his video I started thinking about Tammie and it made me wonder what he was really talking about. He loves his Benchmade 940 and no other knife will take its place. Watch his video again and tell me you don’t think about the one that got away.

I think the problem is in rhe fact that the term E.D.C. is as broad people. Wranglerstars first video on the bugout he had very high hopes for it and gave in a pretty good reveiw, it wasnt till he carried it for awhile he decides it not the knife for him. Im sure his homesteading EDC is much harder on a knife than most people's EDC. Let's face it, the benchmade 940 is a far better knife than the bugout in almost all regards. The price point the bugout is sold at, I would expect it to handle anything I threw at it, and it can't. I think it's fair to say if your EDC is harder on knife, spend the extra $30-40 on the 940 and you'll wont run the risk of being disappointed

I have the $220 model Bugout. The one you spend $148 on a CF Elite for my wife, then realize how flimsy even the CF scales are when you get it. Did I mention it won’t center?
So, add $40 for new G-10 scales, $24 for a carbon fiber back spacer.
I swore off buying Benchmade again, because of design, and construction of a lot of their knives do not include full length liners, for the sake of a few ounces.

I didn’t want to stay without a knife when sending it in to Benchmade, so got me a blue Bugout which I dyed the scales black to. After having the Bugout for over a week I think the Bugout is my favorite, slices way better than the 940 but broke both omega springs after 2 weeks. My best/favorite Benchmade is a Doug Ritter collaboration, with aftermarket micarta handle slabs and deep-carry titanium clip (based on the Griptilian). Essentially the only Benchmade original parts are the liners and lock/pivot assembly. I like their ergonomics and Axis lock, but the base plastic handles do feel chintzy/not very substantial. Knives are a very personal choice, and opinions run the gamut on every aspect of them.

What would be the task you'd use a pocket knife for in a "bug out" situation? I would think it would be used for food prep, making traps or cleaning small animals like squirrels, rabbits. or fish. It's a pocket knife, it was not designed to be used for self defense, field dressing a deer or batoning.

The main thing that drives the cost of knives is the steel used in the blade. This uses S30V which is why you’ve found it hard to sharpen more so than other knives with weaker steel. One of the reasons this got so much attention is that it was an S30V steel at this price point. So due to the blade steel, it’s really not a terrible price. Most companies like Benchmade or Spyderco will sell an entry S30V steel blade at the $140 mark. You can finds S30V knives with higher end handle materials and hardware that exceed $200 easy. I don’t think it’s overpriced, but look how many they’ve sold. So obviously the market overall doesn’t believe it’s a bad price for it.

I got the knife and love it too. As you said its not the "one" knife to rule them all, just like shoes you do need a few different ones to get specific tasks done. It is however a great EDC knife for me,the weight is perfect,I am more likely to put it in my pocket and have it cause of the weight and I think that is benchmade's point, general purpose, lightweight, quality and ready to got all the time, like bugging out. When you bug out you cant take everything you own but you make the best of what you have and weight is a big factor! FYI I got the blue just cause, dam I have lost A nice OD green knife before in the woods, put it down and bye bye they are lost, for me if its in the pocket it does not have to be a tactical color anyways, and bright orange or green is too much, the blue off sets itself in the woods without the "hunter orange" effect and its less "scary" if you have to pull it out in public. Canadian tip, if you are thinking of carrying the line, check the regulations, its sounds crazy but on a visit to my closest Cabella's,Moncton NB,they could not get them anymore, only carried mostly fixed blade benchmades, had a hard time finding them online in Canada, something to check I guess for you ???
