    The creator of Death Note said that at the end when Light was crying for his father, that it was genuine and he wasn't acting. Light's persona of Kira died at the moment Light symbolically drops the pen.

    Does anyone else feel bad for Light's mother? her husband died, her daughter was mentally damaged and her son is the world's greatest serial killer. U.U
    If at some point you feel that events happen very "fast" it is because the anime cut a lot (seriously a lot) of the manga in order to summarize the situation.

      She never knew though. The SPK tells everyone that Light died fighting Kira. Sure, she lost most of her family, but at least she can be proud of who she thought Light was. Also, her daughter was damaged, but not permanently. Sure, it's traumatic, but she didn't turn insane or something.

      Death Note is a series that greatly benefits from a rewatch. I also didn't like much the second half on my first watch but years later I've come to understand and appreciate it a lot more. Understanding that both Mello and Near are fragmented parts of L makes the whole journey a lot better. Near is the kind of guy to go through all the mental gymnastics to catch Kira, while Mello is the kind of guy that would've showed up for the university exam and tell Light who he was. Near is the brains but lacks impulse and taking risks, and while Mello is also quite intelligent he's the risk taker and the one to go all-in in every situation, put everything at risk.
      - Spoiler alert -
      -----------------------
      It's only when they come to work together that they can reach that L level of investigation to catch Kira.

    Sorry for the delay (if someone was actually waiting for this, cough). I promised I'd make another meta about Near and Mello, since this second arc was one of my favorites and the anime didn't do it justice. I feel bad for the delay... University is hard. "Impatience" was a good title... should be this month title too, for I can't wait for a break.
    So. Let's get down to business (to defeat Kira).
    First, Mello. When I said he takes action, I meant it. Let's do a recap. He hears about L.'s death. First, he is surprised. His most emotional side allows himself to be vulnerable and hurt at that moment. But while Roger and Near remain static, both immersed in their own thoughts, it is Mello who moves the conversation forward. He shakes off the weight of the news, even if only for a moment, and asks who will succeed L. While Roger doesn't understand L's decisions and never did -so he also doesn't know who the successor is-, Mello makes up his mind and insists for Near to be the successor. He doesn't intend to stand by, so he leaves The Wammy's House. We don't know everything he did in his absence, but we do know that he didn't stop taking actions that led him to be hidden even from Near's diligent investigations. But don't let that fool you: while he was important in the mafia and trusted, he was still someone's right-hand man. Not the leader, not the first, not what he was looking for. Because that was not his goal, but Kira's, and to defeat Near.
    There is a clear difference between him and Near, and it shows in the later fact. While Mello has fought his way to the top and still ended up as a right-hand man, Near took a leadership position as smooth-as-a-river. While Mello is part of a team, Near leads one.
    But their relationship couldn't be more complicated. First, don't be fooled. Near doesn't hate Mello, and Mello simply doesn't understand Near. Even so, he needs to be in control of his own life, and that need leads him to distort his views of his relationships and to try to turn this into a competition. Not that it bothers Near.
    By this I mean that there are great differences between him and L. First, I want to clarify one of the things that this second arc took away from the manga. There are no characters in this series that are not expressive. Obata's style was one of the many things that brought people's attention. So clean and dynamic. We can actually see Near showing hundreds of emotions in his face, more than in his "cold" version of the anime.
    And this is more a headcanon of mine, and several guys in the fandom, but even if Near was not autistic (which is not impossible and I think the way Ohba wrote him and L were very obvious), we cannot ignore that while his words may not always seem the easiest to understand, he demonstrates emotions through his actions as well.
    When he received the news of L's death, it upset him so much that he purposely ruined his favorite puzzle. (I've said this before but I mention it again.) Even while immersed in his career as L, he didn't stop looking for Mello. And even Light speaks out about the thoughts of the fandom and wonders if his quest for Mello, other than obtaining information, was for something else, leaving it in doubt. As well as another of the various scenes eliminated from this arc, where upon hearing that Mello was involved in this case, he left Light hanging. Near asking so explicitly if the man who interrogated Mr. Yagami sounded like he was eating some kind of candy, specifically a chocolate, will always be one of the funniest scenes in this series for me (and it's not like this series lacks its special touch of comedy). It's funny the image that, in spite of so many years, he maintains of Mello (the image that appears behind his head while he asks Mr. Yagami this question).
    But I digress.
    I want to talk more about them, but I can only go so far without giving spoilers. I could go on to talk more about the deleted scenes, as well as Light in this chapter, but I guess that'll be in the next episode.
    End of meta for now.
    Ps: so this was... long. (My apologies).
    PS 2: you can tell by my paragraph repeating itself that I wrote this way before and was just waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it.

    Something isn’t right. In the manga, there was a 1st raid on the Mafia hideous coordinated by Light/L and the US president. That raid failed because of Sidoh, Light founds about Sidoh, and then yells at Ryuk for telling the true origin of his (Light’s) Death Note. I was certain those events happened in the anime, but was hit by the Mandela Effect?

    The manga shows a lot more about Near and Mello, and this part of the story is rushed in the anime. I still like the second part, and Near is one of my favorite characters, but I think they could have added a few more episodes to give us more info on him and Mello.
    Another interesting thing from the manga is that Light expected Matsuda to take the Shinigami eyes, and told Ryuk to follow Matsuda once he did. Matsuda does offer to take the eyes before Soichiro says that he will. And after Soichiro says that he'll make the eye deal, Matsuda tries to talk him out of it to let him take the eyes instead, but Soichiro won't let him. Either way, Light doesn't try to stop his dad from taking the eyes. And yes, if Soichiro had survived that explosion, Light would have killed him in 13 days to keep up the facade of that rule being real.
    Hang in there, guys! It's still a great story and the ending is awesome, imo. But yeah, maybe check out the manga once you've finished the series. Looking forward to the next episode.

      Remember Light had to hold onto the notebook to keep its memories. As his dad dies, Light drops the notebook. In that moment, he doesn't have the Kira memories. He is just a son reacting to his dad dying

    It's always been hard for me to get into the series for the simple flaw in Light's logic. The only way he can even know the name and/or face of a criminal is if they've already been caught, which means they're already being punished. He's not actually reducing the number of active criminals at all. It doesn't even work as a deterrent, for the same reason the regular death sentence doesn't. It's weird that he's so smart, yet never realized that. This is all a lot of trouble to go through just for that faulty logic.

    • @djdomain
      @djdomain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Deterrents don't usually work for criminals because either
      a) they think they won't get caught,
      b) are overwhelmed by emotion in the moment causing them to act (eg: murdering spouse & affair partner immediately after catching them in bed),
      or c) are mentally impaired or compelled to act with no thought given about any consequences.
      The bigger problem I have with Light's plan is false positives. There are criminals that get exonerated after new evidence clears them of involvement, but that doesn't help if they are executed (unfortunately there have been IRL cases of this). There was also a scene where a kid retorting to some bullies that he'd put their details up on the internet for Kira to see, who knows what he'd accuse them of and if Kira would respond (assuming Kira progressed to punishing low level crimes and 'bad behaviour' if Light hadn't been caught in the end).

      @Subjectivity13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@djdomain Exactly right, DJ! All three bases covered! Maybe I should have listed them myself, but thanks for the assist! No criminal expects to get caught, or is not thinking clearly when they act. Plenty of exonerations too, as the Innocence Project has shown, often with DNA evidence. Many other groups have gathered more than enough statistics over many decades to disprove the deterrent idea. I feel like the Shinigami eyes should show if someone is guilty as well, but I know the Death Note has nothing to do with justice, inherently. Just a shame no special rules or powers could have been used to help with that, but I'm not even sure Light cares anymore. The vast majority of his attention is now focused on not getting caught.

    Team "L" hit like!!

  • @pimflip
    @pimflip 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Its realy NOT the ORIGINAL STORY.(sorry for my english) In the original story L managed to fake his death by writing his own name on the Death Note. There is a rule that says: “If you write, die of disease for the cause of death, but only write a specific time of death without the actual name of disease, the human will die from an adequate disease. But the Death Note can only operate within 23 days" and there is another rule that says that if you write the same name in two different death notes, only the first death note which the human name was written Will actualy kill him. L already knew that misa was the second kira, he just wasn't able to prove it yet, so he asked Watari to exchange misa's death note to a fake one and he used It to write his own name and his time of death exactly 23 days later in order to cancel any other try to kill him . L also asked Matsuda and Soichiro Yagami to go to the USA to Test the 13 DAYS RULE. Light's plan was to kill his father and make he give the death note back to him. However, misa's note had already been changed by L. At the moment L feigned his death he was alone in the room with Light, so he was able to hear Light celebrating his victory, that's when he confirmed that Light was kira. When Soichiro came back to japan, he scheduled to meet with Light so he could give the death note back to him, but it was a trap, the Police surrounded Light and L appeared Alive saying "I'm so sorry at the end we coudn't be friends" and told Light his real plan. Desesperated, Light asked Ryuk to write the name of all policeman, and at this time Ryuk wrote Light's name. So L won, but he also died 20 days later as he wrote on misa's Death note. THE MANGA was planned to have 6 volumes, BUT at the time Death Note was making a BIG success, so the writers decided to make the story longer, the manga ended by having 12 volumes. That is why they created MELLOW and NEAR. If you are curious you can watch the original ending at the Japanese Live action in which they could show the original story.th-cam.com/video/X-Cnw0qkrFE/w-d-xo.html
