    To be fair to Grog's "Percy would know what to do", the giant was down for every plan Percy made this season...

    I almost never see it pointed out that when Kash is dying we see the circle of the golden threads all flowing at the Raven Queen, the threads of all those dying on the battlefield. I think Kash's entire death was to showcase that.

    Kash and Zahra were favorite guest characters in the campaign, played by Will Friedle and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. As I recall, they showed up a few times in the campaign, sometimes played by Matt as NPCs, but sometimes played by themselves (usually to help out in a fight). It wasn't until their last appearance that Zahra suddenly put her hand on her abdomen and cried out (something like), "We have to think about the baby!"
    I think that the first indication that they were romantic. I always figured that they had an open relationship, since Kash was always pretty flirty, and there were a lot of Vex/Zahra shippers.
    Kash dying in this battle was a significant change from the campaign. I think that because of that, and because he was such a fan favorite (from the campaign, if not from the show), they take that moment to emphasize his death. I mean, about 500 other people are dead, too, but this is the one the Matron shows up for.
    I'm sorry to hear that you've been sick, but I'm really glad to see you continuing your reactions. Sigh. I got very depressed about the ending of Arcane season 1, but now you're making me want to watch season 2. I guess if you can keep going, I can, too. See you there!

      Their first few times, they were both very flirty, especially Kash with Keyleth. Later on, they were definitely in a relationship. Though much like the entire rest of the cast, that never prevented them from flirting for fun.

    We were seeing what Vax was seeing - which is the Matron coming for Kash's soul. We didn't see that with Percy because Vax wasn't present for his death, only the aftermath.
    Also fun fact - Kash never died in the campaign. He survived the whole thing and even had a child with Zahra. 😢

    In the livestream Kash and Zara were guest players and were good friends of Vox Machina and CR. so I think it was to give him a more significance for those who know. Since Vax had a connection to them it was probably more natural for him to see Kash's fate.

    (maybe not so) fun fact about this episode, Sam Riegel (Voice of Scanlan, writer, producer) "wanted to kill so many people" during this fight. At one point both Kash *and* Zahra were on the chopping block. Sam also suggested Cass dying but Matt (DM, producer) "was not gonna let that happen"

    3:44 - While Grog was a decent tactician, Matt would penalize Travis if Grog was
    TOO clever (1D6 Psychic damage, I believe); hence the memory loss. After
    all, he did have an intelligence of six ("...I think I know what I'm doing"),
    which made Grog functionally illiterate.

      @jonathanhibberd9983 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Grog's intelligence was low, but he had at least an average wisdom (and I think he was slightly above average, with a 12). So he wasn't so good with the book learning, but he was clever and could come up with good plans. Nothing as intricate as something Percy would come up with, but still good. I only remember once or twice when Matt gave him psychic damage for being "too smart".

    While the comment did twist the knife even more, I liked that Grog mentioned Percy. Whether or not he was right, it showed that the team is still missing Percy, and in an episode that is very much focused on combat and doesn't have a lot of time for character reflection, it's nice for them to remind the audience that VM are still very much missing their emo nerd.

    The pike arc is animated show only because Ashley was gone a lot during the campaign. But my theory is she’s going to come to a sort of compromise that she can believe in her goddess and ask for help. But that it’s also important to believe in your own strength and not just rely on gods for everything.

    Kash's death definitely was more meaningful to those who saw the campaign. He was played by Will Friedle, who Marisha had a childhood crush on. So Keyleth's interactions with him are a reflection of that. Kash and Zahra were romantic in the campaign, but it was definitely more of a "off screen" thing since they were guest characters, so it definitely came out of the blue for viewers. But, as another commenter said, there was a later reveal that confirmed it.

  • @jonathanhibberd9983
    @jonathanhibberd9983 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    24:30 It might be useful to understand the way that death works in their game.
    Death in D&D is very simplistic. You hit 0HP, and you're knocked unconscious. Then you make death saving throws every turn. Roll 10 or above, you have a success. 3 successes, and you stabilize. 3 failures, and that's death. Until you have 3 failed saves, you can be restored with basic healing. After 3 failures, the only way to be brought back is through resurrection. In standard D&D, there are a few tiers of resurrection. Revivify has to be cast within a minute of dying, and costs 300 gold worth of diamonds. Resurrection can be cast within a longer period of time (a week I think) and costs more in diamonds. And then at the highest levels, there is True Resurrection, which can bring back anyone who died in the previous 100 years. But it's pricey. Basically, as long as you have the materials and the spell, you can bring someone back.
    So at the table, Matt has made some changes to give death more impact. When they do a resurrection spell, he makes it a spell. The baseline is like a death saving roll - if you roll 10 or above, you're restored. If not, the spell fails and the character stays dead. There are modifiers for that. Each previous death adds one to the difficulty. So for example, if Vex died and had to be brought back now, because of her previous death, they would have to roll above an 11. He also allows 3 people to participate in the ritual in some way. You can do whatever you think would help guide the spirit back from the dead. Scanlan could sing a song. Keyleth could craft a wreath of their favorite flowers. Grog could yell at them to scare them into coming back. They each do a skill check, with the difficulty set by Matt based on how likely he thinks it would work. Scanlan might have to roll a performance check above 10 because it's a really well thought out and emotional tribute; Keyleth could be a nature check of 15 because it's simple, but still has some meaning; and Grog could roll an intimidation check of 20 because it's funny, but not really a good way to bring them back. Each successful check reduces the difficulty by 3, each failure raises it by 1.
    So, let's say it was Vex, with the checks mentioned. Scanlan and Keyleth succeed, Grog doesn't. That would be 10 base + 1 for previous death + 1 for Grog's failure - 3 for Scanlan's success - 3 for Keyleth's success = 6. So Matt rolls a 6, and she comes back.
    Because of that dice roll, every death has an element of tension and drama. Each one has a weight. But even with Matt's rules, it's still easy to bring someone back. There's a site that lists stats for the campaign. All totaled, they died a total of 16 times (and that's just the ones where they actually died, not just got knocked down to 0HP). We've actually seen a few. Grog losing his strength - he actually died in the campaign. Most of them they don't bother to show because they're back within a minute. But that means that every death we see in the animated show has some importance to the story. Vex dying is how Vax became the Matron's champion. Grog died to get rid of his sword, but they changed that to having him lose his strength.
    So they bottom line is that they could kill off multiple main characters in the same season. There's a thing in D&D called a TPK - total party kill. This is a story that they're writing, but it's based on the game, and in the game, things can go very badly based on nothing more than the roll of the dice. It's super rare, but it's best to expect that every death is permanent, so that if they are able to come back, it's a nice surprise.

    "Do they still have it?" Nope, Scanlan dropped Mythcarver next to the cave.
    Everyone is in the dark with Pike's faith arc at this point. Ashley wasn't present for a lot of the campaign due to work conflicts, so for the series they had to expand in a bunch of places, and imagine what might have happened if Pike had been there. The entire blood subplot is new, so everyone is in the same boat wondering where that might lead. Your guess is literally as good as anyone else's 🙂
    Kash was a guest PC (with Zahra) who played in a handful of episodes, their characters had a bigger role in the campaign than they do in the show though, and I feel like it wasn't translated very well as far as why we should really care about them. I agree the romance reveal was a little sudden, but that part is actually the closest thing to the campaign about the characters, lol, it was a sudden lore drop then, too.
    I think Vax can see the threads of fate when Kash dies because he's looking for them, and watching directly. I assume it's a choice on his part, otherwise he would be constantly bombarded with visions on any battlefield, which isn't ideal. I'm only guessing though, the Matron might have shown him for her own reasons, I don't know. Vax wasn't there at the moment Percy died, so he wouldn't have seen him, Percy's soul had moved past the Matron's domain by the time they arrived.
    It's not really explained in the show, and it's a little fuzzy, lore-wise, even in the campaign, but the Matron isn't a goddess of the Dead, but specifically she reigns over the moment where a soul moves from life to death, and /only/ that moment. Her domain stops at the edges of that transition, and she has no claim on souls past that point. She isn't a deity like mythological Hades, whose realm holds the dead eternally. The Matron's realm is more of a ...morbid train station? 😆Where they go after that is out of her hands.

    Grog pleading with Pike to fix Scanlan feels startlingly different from the stream, in which that line was a panicked roar of "Fix him! FIX HIM!" But I think it's a change they had to make, because if they'd tried to keep the original line read it would have come off less like panic and more like huge Grog terrorizing his tiny friend Pike whom he's already nearly killed before.

The Kash moment really threw a lot of us Critters because Kash was definitely there at the end of the campaign, even if he didn't play a critical part of the end of the story. So it is interesting to see this diverging timeline and story and what they plan on doing with it. The romance has a chance to build over time in the campaign. There’s something that happens later in the campaign that I hope is already set up in the animated series, which is why the reveal here feels a bit rushed. We’ll have to see.
