They aren't bad in any way, but they are pale imitations of why Star Trek has been so beloved since the '60s. You don't boil down one of the most important and hopeful sci-fi IPs to ever exist into a popcorn flick comparable to The Transformers without irritating every fan. Still, I don't expect many reactors (who, let's face it, do this for a job) to spend the amount of time needed to catch up on the IP. TNG and DS9 combined encompass more than 300 episodes (178 for TNG and 173 for DS9). That's a lot of watching for a casual reactor and probably won't carry the views needed to be competitive in this entertainment genre.

I think Star Trek 2009 is a perfectly fine place to begin your journey, for all the reasons you yourself articulated. The new cast obviously poured their heart and souls into recreating the characters we all know and love. My personal favorite is Karl Urban as Dr "Bones" McCoy, who serves as an important counterpoise to Spock's logic in the dramatic triad of Kirk/Spock/McCoy. Urban nailed McCoy first time out of the gate. I hope you check out the OG cast (TOS, for "The Original Series", and the first six theatrical films), it will make you appreciate this movie even more.
So happy to see this one getting some love. It's a fantastic movie, and a great intro to the really dense universe of Star Trek. Highly recommend the more recent shows as well, like Strange New Worlds.
Pretty impressive that Vkunia was able to catch that the Red Shirt was going to die with no prior knowledge about Star Trek. 😆 (On the original series, in almost every episode when a character would die it would be a Security Officer, which would use the red uniform. Yellow is Command, blue is Medical & Sciences.)

I think this is a perfectly fine movie! I think it fails to capture the ethos of the Star Trek series as a whole, but as a standalone film it’s not bad.
The only two things I dislike about this movie are that it skips over all the years Kirk spent in Star Fleet moving up the ranks and becoming captain and, changing his commendation for original thinking into a court martial and reprimand for reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru test, were not a changes I appreciated.

Great reaction. Long-time Trekker, who mostly LIKES NuTrek. The Spock / Uhura thing surprises many but, in the first few episodes of the original series, Uhura openly flirts with and teases Spock several times. She later goes on to master play of the Vulcan Harp, supposedly the first human to achieve this. So what happens between them in NuTrek is more like, "Hmm, yeah. Why not?". :)
Knowing Spock, none of us old-school fans would necessarily have shipped them either, but from Uhura's side, there are some TOS episodes that might be viewed differently in retrospect.
I like that the Spock/Uhura kiss caught everyone(?) by surprise; in the original series, Kirk & Uhura kissing was shocking. IIRC, it was the first black/white kiss on TV.
Starting with the '09 movie is perfectly fine, but be aware that it doesn't quite capture the ethos of what the Star Trek franchise is. Granted, the heart of Star Trek has always been the TV-Shows and the movies have always been an add-on that were a lot more action-based and generic action-scifi, but a lot of the post-2009 entries into the franchise have taken it even more so in that direction imho. Of the older movies, some of them are quite good, while some of them... not so much. It's very hit or miss. Again, the heart of the franchise is the TV-Shows, but there's a lot of episodes there. On top of that, many of the shows take some time to really get going. Especially so The Next Generation (TNG), which is a fan favorite. Maybe the way to go is for a group of trusted supporters to compile a list of popular and continuity-relevant episodes for you to watch depending on how many episodes you'd like to watch, if you ever choose to go down that route. The good thing is a lot of the pre-2009 shows are fairly episodic, and so it's quite easy to compress the show into a smaller number of episodes without losing too much. At least with the exception of later seasons of Deep Space 9 (DS9), where it was starting to go over more towards serialized story-telling and the number of minimum-episodes to keep up might increase. Other (and newer) scifi shows that are well-worth watching are: The Expanse and Dark (original german audio with english subtitles is a must tho, it really does matter)

No hate from this Trekkie for starting with the "Kelvin Timeline" reboot. Just like I've never hated on anyone who started the franchise with TNG or DS9. (I personally enjoyed Voyager and Enterprise just as much as TNG, which had some stellar episodes.)
I've been a Trekkie since I was a kid in the 70's. A lifetime of conventions and all. I love the reboot and agree it's a great intro. Hope you continue with Trek, it's a great universe with a whole lot of lore.
Hello Vicky!😊 Happy Thanksgiving!🦃 I have watched Star Trek since the original series. No judgement here. You have to start somewhere. The original Spock, Leonard Nimoy approved of Zachary Quinto being cast as the new Spock. Yep, it is the "Vulcan Neck Pinch", Vicky. J.J. Abrahams made it an alternate timeline as to not offend the fans of the original series. Vulcans have emotions. Karl Urban does a very good impersonation of the actor that originally play Dr. Leonard McCoy (Bones). They have just learned how to suppress them over many generations. Great reactions to your first Star Trek film, Vicky!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The Star Trek movies take place in an alternate timeline that is very similar to the original Star Trek series with events happening earlier in universe. Like the fact Kirk becoming Captain a year earlier then kirk took over the crew of the Enterprise a whole 2 years earlier as well unlike the original series. Even the crew who are the exact same characters from the original series by coincidence or Fate.
I had seen a few random TOS episodes when I was a kid, mostly remembered the Futurama episode, but this movie is what got me into Star Trek and is a fun jumping off point. I know it has mixed feels by fans, but it will always have a special place in my heart
33:16 -- RE: "Something tells me that was unscripted."; A: Ah, *Nope!* But yeah, he might have been able to throw in a classic Spock line whenever he wanted to, even if it wasn't in the script at that time. Spock's character will routinely become fascinated with things, which is why he is well suited to science as a professional field.
33:13 “Something tells me that was unscripted” yeah, no. The opposite. “Fascinating” is basically Spock’s catchphrase, always has been. It’s exceedingly scripted fanservice
7:41 I love how Zachary Quinto's (supposedly emotionless) Spock delivered his "Live long and prosper." to the disrespectful Vulcan council with barely concealed contempt.
7:40 -- RE: "So he can just turn off his emotions and go the Vulcan way?"; A: Canonically No, and not here, either. Spock is a complex case because his mother is human, so he has human tendencies wrapped up with possibly even more powerful and incredibly deep seated Vulcan responses. The mating urge, for example, cannot be denied, and Spock's father was possibly "Lucky" to have found a suitable human partner in Spock's mother at the exact time that he needed a proper mate. His answer about Logic recognizes science but also serendipity, and things like chance. For more about this, it would be necessary to dig into much of the material of the Original Series as well as some of the TV series since the Next Generation. Spock is basically the most important character for the Audience to get an insider's view of what it is to be Vulcan. Some of the best work on TV though was done with the series "Enterprise" which aired around 20 years ago. In that series a female Vulcan science officer named T'Pol joins the very first Enterprise as an Executive Officer for its very first Captain, Jonathon Archer. The basic idea is sound, since Vulcans introduced themselves to Earthlings when Earth first learned to travel with Warp speed. We're the new guys on the block.
I'm so happy your finally starting the trek journey. Fun story. When I was young, my mom took me to a convention. I met the original scotty, James doohan. He gave me some one on one time and signed a number of autographs for me. He was a very down to earth man
As a first step into the Trek universe, 2009 isn't a bad start. It gets the gist of Star Trek along nicely, introduces the characters well and gives us a solid foundation for them. It's definitely more action oriented than most Trek, especially of the time, but it's a good entry for someone unfamiliar with the franchise to see if they enjoy the premise enough to move forward with the older content.
Unless someone else pointed it out, I'm such a ST nerd, LOL, the Romulan ship Narada, didn't always look like it did. It was more sleek and cumbersome like a typical romulan ship. However, the engineers used borg tech to enhance the ship. That's something I got from a video about the background of the Narada.
J J. Abrams is not a fan of Star Trek. He wanted to do this movie on his terms by making it a space adventure action movie, and ignoring the exploration aspects. It is definitely controversial amongst the traditional Trekkies, which I am not. I found it very enjoyable from start to finish. The casting was spot on. And the trilogy was decent.
Fun Fact: Zachary Quinto the man who plays "young" Spock couldn't do the Vulcan hand sign on his own so he needed to glue his fingers together to do it for the movie.
It’s a good movie overall. JJ Abrams is great with visuals. He’s also rather proud that he ignores the backstory, and in several movies, demonstrates that he has no understanding of interstellar distances. Making it a supernova that destroys Romulus doesn’t make sense, unless it’s their own sun, in which case the planet would be doomed without a sun anyway.
While this isn't the movie I would recommend to start with as a Trekkie, it's a banger movie! I always treated it as a big 'What if?' episode of what happens if James Kirk's father dies and all the implications of that change to the timeline. I'll be curious to see if you continue your Trek journey, it is an amazing franchise but can be quite daunting considering we're at something like 900 episodes and 13 movies now.
I've seen a lot of reactors jump in with this one, and then the floodgates open saying "watch the other movies first!" and I will agree with all that! The original 6 and then the 4 Next Gen ones are all great AND lead to this. Yes it's a great jumping on point, but it's also a huge disservice to the priors which honestly, are worth watching anyway so you may as well :)
If V is going to watch all the new Star Trek movies, she could watch Star Trek 2 (of the original cast) first for the obvious reason. But no spoilers here...
@@vinnycordeiro Even just the fact that in this one, Spock comes from the priors, so it makes sense (as someone reacting to stuff unseen) to watch them too, may as well (plus, they are worth it!)
It would have been hilarious if Jim had said No at the end and the whole crew had to wait for Spock to walk off the ship before they could leave and then when they're like 100 light years out ( I have no idea how time distance and space works) they beam him aboard 🤣
Hi Vicki, welcome to the fandom. Don't let anyone tell you that something is or isn't Star Trek. It has many different forms, and every single one is Star Trek. If you enjoy classics, cool. If not, also cool. Have the best time.
Excited that you are checking out Star Trek. If you find this story universe interesting, I would suggest you watch a few recommended episodes from each season of the original series - to give you more of a proper background to appreciate the characters.
0:45 -- RE: Reboot Star Trek and Introduction Smorgasbord; Full disclosure, I did like this one but I was a fan, already... the smartest play in terms of playbooks in this the flagship is that it used a sensible sentimental angle and the character of Spock was a pretty safe bet, in that regard. Making Kirk the flipside character, a tiny bit antagonistic at the beginning... genius. Karl Urban for MVP, too.
1:45 -- RE: Die Hard Trekkie Fanbase; *Full Disclosure,* there was an historical division in the fanbase about 40 years ago, around the time that "The Next Generation" had been on the air for a few years. Trekkies and Trekkers became a talking point by the release of "Generations", the first TNG film. The "Die Hard" Trekkies though, those are the convention goers who didn't need to be convinced to LARP a lot. Conventions had been a thing since the 1970s.
Thank you for this ...this is one of my favorite Star Trek movies( if not my favorite of all time st movie)...and you're one of my favorite reactors...so ...win- win❤❤❤❤❤
18:12 Surely you've heard the Star Trek related phrase "Red Shirt" Funny you said that's a red flag... I replied, Poor buggers a Red Shirt, he's done for.
The third movie in the reboot series is a really good one. The narrative and character expansion all contribute to a truly "Star Trek" experience. (Not a big fan of the 2nd film for my own reasons, but as far as filmmaking elements go, it is a quality production, no hate.)
While I wasn't a Trekkie growing up I was still aware of the basics and of who was who. Its weird watching someone with zero Trek knowledge go into the franchise
Vulcans repress emotions, they still have them. The red shirt ensign died because Red Shirts always die ;) Nero could have just gone to Romulus instead of attacking the Federation, twice. At this point in time, "we" aren't supposed to know that Romulans look like Vulcans...it's a whole plot point in a TOS episode.
Ill be the first to admit I'm not a star trk fan at all my mom grey up watching the original shows on tv but I'll be the first to say this trilogy is amazing especially the second movie definitely my favourite Eric Bana does a great job as Nero in this one don't usually see him playing a villian
12:00 the reason he doesn't know.her name is because she had no canonical first name until this movie. It was a huge debate for decades, kinda crazy really. They used that as a joke for this film and her name was accepted as canon
I'm sorry to say, whoever told you this was a good place to start watching Star Trek did you dirty. This movie has been called a reboot, but that's simply not the case. This is nothing more than another episode in the long, convoluted Star Trek story, and consists almost entirely of back-references to in-world Star Trek history, plus a ton and a half of fan service cameos and sly references to obscure Star Trek stories from the vast array of TV episodes and feature films released over the last fifty years. That it tells new stories about old characters is beside the point, because time travel and its terrible and unpredictable consequences are entirely within the scope of the pseudo-science of the Star Trek universe. If you think of this in terms of a book series, you've picked up the second- or third-to-most recent book and started there, instead of at the beginning of the story, where you should have begun. If you continue on this path, you're going to spend the next very long time saying to yourself, "Gee, now I get it!" every time you see the original story plot behind some obscure thing that, completely out of context as it inevitably was, made no sense when you first saw it here.
I love this reboot film! But I was always confused about seeing the building of the Enterprise being done on earth. Its sheer weight alone would prevent it from being launched. Also, in the teaser trailer it showed a welder working on the Starship in outerspace (which is the most logical location for it to be constructed). Unless the earth bound ship was actually an at scale practice mock up of the real Starship being built in outerspace. It would make more sense to build a model of a starship while on earth and then later build one in space. But then again, we are dealing with 23rd century technology (a century with well preserved 300 year old cars no less).
Yeah, I was little when the show was on the air, but came to love it during reruns and later the movies. Some things will make more sense when you watch the original series. If this movie excites you, VIcky, then yes, it's a good place to start. The series takes longer than two hours to establish character, plot, etc.
I agree, for a newcomer, this would be a great introduction to the universe of star trek, however, it does require you to watch the originals to get alot ofmthings in this movies. I am happy you are delving into this. It's my absolute favourite franchise in the sci fi realm. My fav is stII: wrath of khan and stIV: voyage home. I cannot wait to see you react to the originals, but itsmok if you continue on this timeline before you do. :) In my honest opinion, they did a brilliant job casting the actors for each characters. They are incredibly perfect for the role, as you will find out when you get to the original movies to compare. Ps: you might have to watch key episodes of the series before you watch these movies (originals) both star trek, and star trek next generations.. but it's OK you don't want to. Bon voyage on this amazeballz adventure!
The guy that plays Chekov the one with the accent he was leaving his house and wants the gate closed for his house he went back to check if the gate was locked and his SUV rolled backwards and pinned him to the gate and he died
Love your reactions, Vickie. If you want to try the first Trek series, the first episode is called "The Man Trap." I'd strongly suggest that you get to know the series before you see any of the movies.
In lieu of requesting you watch the original TV show from the 60s, I highly recommend Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It’s a modern show that I think effectively captures the utopic and adventurous spirit of this franchise.
Agree. And there are far fewer episodes from each year, only 10 each year. If you would like to watch two original series episodes from the 60s City on the Edge of Forever and Amok Time are consider one the better episodes.
It would be so cool, VKunia if you reacted to Menagerie, a two-part episode from the original Star Trek series, from the 1960s. Take a look at a young William Shatner and Lenard Nimoy and do so before you watch the second Chris Pine movie. I would also recommend you watch from the original series, "Space Seed" with a young Recardo Maltoban, before you watch the second original series movie, from 1092, I wouldn't want to give you the title of that movie, because it would be a big spoiler for the second Chris Pine movie. And when you see the second Chris Pine movie, you'll be very surprised when you see who is playing the big bad villain.
I love this movie, I've seen it legitimately 7 or 8 times, definitely was a comfort movie during the Covid years, the sequel is pretty good despite the hate it tends to get but the 3rd kinda falls flat on its face and it looks like they're not going to do any more movies even though a lot of the cast want to come back for another one
Honestly this was my first real introduction into the Star Trek Uni. (And my dad is like an OG Trekkie) And now I’m watching Lower Decks and can’t wait for Section 31 movie

I've been a Trekkie since I was a kid in the 70's. A lifetime of conventions and all. I love the reboot and agree it's a great intro. Hope you continue with Trek, it's a great universe with a whole lot of lore.
Yes! I’m so happy you’re watching Star Trek! You will love the rest of the Star Trek Franchise! This video is only the beginning!
Well, as long as it gets you into the universe, I suppose it`s a start. But nothing is better than Trek 1966-2005.
"Simon Pegg always gets the short end of the stick no matter what role he plays."
Then you MUST see Hot Fuzz.
18:12 Surely you've heard the Star Trek related phrase "Red Shirt"
Funny you said that's a red flag...
The red shirt ensign died because Red Shirts always die ;)
Nero could have just gone to Romulus instead of attacking the Federation, twice.
"He's not going to make it... that's a RED FLAG!" No. No, that's a RED SHIRT!
12:00 the reason he doesn't know.her name is because she had no canonical first name until this movie. It was a huge debate for decades, kinda crazy really.
They used that as a joke for this film and her name was accepted as canon
Tyler Perry and many other actors and actresses make cameos in the Star Trek Universe because they are big fans of Star Trek.
VKunia plays Beverly Crusher in the TNG reboot. 💯💯💯
Why am I so fascinated you picked up on the “red shirt” guy! 🤣😆
8:05 Waiting for the moment you recognize Gamora.
I didn't get all the references until later, but this was my introduction to the Star Trek series too.
In my honest opinion, they did a brilliant job casting the actors for each characters.
I love this movie. It's a perfectly fine place to start. You will enjoy them all. Live long and prosper.🖖
Yes it is Karl Urban
The guy that plays Chekov the one with the accent he was leaving his house and wants the gate closed for his house he went back to check if the gate was locked and his SUV rolled backwards and pinned him to the gate and he died
Love your reactions, Vickie. If you want to try the first Trek series, the first episode is called "The Man Trap." I'd strongly suggest that you get to know the series before you see any of the movies.
it is a common misconception that vulcans don't have emotions. They have them but they repress them.
Eric Bana is unrecognizable as Nero.
1:43 Whovians too. Polite and ultra loyal. "Gallifrey Falls No More" Tom Baker
In lieu of requesting you watch the original TV show from the 60s, I highly recommend Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It’s a modern show that I think effectively captures the utopic and adventurous spirit of this franchise.
👎
Dang, I forgot this is the 15th anniversary for this movie.
Star Trek is awesome I grew up watching The Next Generation
Yes it's Winona Ryder
I grew up on original series and tng, voy, and ds9. No problem with this version
Another great Sci-Fi Universe to jump into is "The Expanse"!
Its a pretty good movie if you remember this isnt star trek. This is Star Trek Wars
How many pretty women have fallen for Kirk's charms and now you too!!! Oh the humanity
Of all the name drops you did during the movie, I was shocked you didn't call out Zoe Saldana.
Even Sheldon approved of zachary quinto
Love these new films more than the old ones and tv shows lol
The guy who died during the parachute jump was wearing red. Redshirt always die
Nothing like a good Vulcan neck thingy😂
I love this movie, I've seen it legitimately 7 or 8 times, definitely was a comfort movie during the Covid years, the sequel is pretty good despite the hate it tends to get but the 3rd kinda falls flat on its face and it looks like they're not going to do any more movies even though a lot of the cast want to come back for another one
Honestly this was my first real introduction into the Star Trek Uni. (And my dad is like an OG Trekkie)
And now I’m watching Lower Decks and can’t wait for Section 31 movie
in Alberta Canada has a place called Vulcan they have startrek things all over the place
Yes please watch more.
The Vulcan Neck Bench is from Spaceballs.
it comes in a package deal with the Romulan table set
How about a poll of Star Trek TOS now to give you a handful of critical episodes of the original 1960 series just to get a baseline and then we can hop right into the original Star Trek movies! I’m here for ALL if it! 🖖🖖❤
You must watch the blooper reel as well...
