    The one thing I liked about these girls is that they're the only ones who haven't been found out to eat loads of take aways, and actually were cooking for themselves! Granted, they need help with portions and recognising what food to choose, but at least the immediate answer isn't "stop using the drive through"

    This show just highlights how difficult a doctor's job really is. Your patient comes in suffering from the ill effects of obesity and they are saying all the right things. They are so far in denial or ashamed of some bingeing that they erase it from their own memory! Without video proof how does a medical professional get through to them? I feel like in a normal situation they'd just leave the office saying the doctor doesn't get it and they must have a medical issue that's hampering their weight loss.

    • @FreshSalad645
      @FreshSalad645 4 ปีที่แล้ว +176

      For having a family member who is a health professional and deals with this issue on a weekly basis, it is even harder than that. People often lie or a not honest with their diets. Even when people try to be honest, they have a really hard time sticking to a "plan". I'm not even talking about a meal plan, I'm not talking about forbidding people to eat certain things. It's more about portion control, balanced diets, and a little bit of everything (like, if you really loooove chocolate, you can have a bit, just don't binge on it every day kind of thing). It does require to change habits and it is really hard ! Her patients often just "slip" back into old habits, and then they come back with the same issue and she's like "did the plan help, or was it too hard?" - "Oh no, it helped, it wasn't hard... I just stopped". What do you want her to do except like "well, I gave you the solution, the rest is up to you".
      I do think it is hard because no one wants to spend so much time thinking about the food and it pushes people into "decision fatigue" in a way.
      Plus, there are TONS of things out there that are temptation (especially if you have a food issue, whatever the personal reason is). So you make an exception, and then another, and another and then you are back to the start.
      It is especially hard in her field because some people do have genuine things they can't or shouldn't eat (I know people make a useless fuss around gluten, lactose, and whatnot but she's a health professional, not a marketeer, so she does deal with people who have genuine food intolerance or allergies). Even if they have medical proof they shouldn't eat or drink certain food types, they sometimes just "give up", even if it gives them terrible side effects. Many people just "can't imagine" their life without certain food. (In her job, she gives them alternatives and meal ideas, so it's not like they are left on their own).
      In general, food related issues are hard to deal with because a part of it is psychological. It is not just calories, macros, and good fats, it is also about people's relationship with food. If the person doesn't want to work on that, you can't help them.

    • @tinachristine4573
      @tinachristine4573 4 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      Food is a very emotional thing. It triggers memories of the earliest form of care/love we received from our caregivers. How little or much of it we take is a complex interplay of psychological responses and coping mechanisms. Until the individual is able to answer truthfully 'What does food represent to me? Why is satiety so paramount to me as a sensation? What do hunger pangs trigger within me on an emotional level? How do I express my feelings/opinions? How do I view myself in relation to my sense of being deserving of 'good things'?
      So this is a lot of psychological work and until it's done, counting calories just won't crack it. It will be like telling a drug addict to just say no to drugs.

      completely.. im not overweight medically but ive always been a bit “chubby” and i always just thought i had a slow metabolism and i was like “why can everyone else eat the same as me and not gain weight” when in reality i was just constantly snacking and eating loads without realising. but i guess i was in denial and insists i just had a slow metabolism

    • @FreshSalad645
      @FreshSalad645 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@user-vo9xe4yw7i You can have a slow metabolism AND eat too much. Though, you should get checked out by a doctor. A slow metabolism is sometimes the sign that something is not ok. By example, with your thyroid. Do not worry, I had a lazy thyroid and it was part of why I personally gained weight, but once I started to eat the correct food... It went back to normal !

Bad habits die hard, make small changes and realistic ones at that. Don’t say your own a diet, say your aiming for a healthier lifestyle. Eating better and moving about more is for life not a quick fix. In reality even going out for a fast pace walk for 30min or more is enough along with a well balanced diet to make a difference. What do I know? Well due to illness and being on steroids for my health I ballooned to 15 stone, now I am a healthy 9 stone and it’s was all due to determination for a better life and not to be in constant pain.

      Don't get me wrong - genetics definitely makes a difference in how easily you lose and gain weight though. To lose weight I had to literally eat 1k calories a day (no, I didn't count wrongly, trust me) + exercise. A lot of people don't believe me but it's true, yeah I'm short but people I know who are shorter than me can eat more than me without gaining weight lol. That said, with proper diet and exercise everyone should be able to stay at a relatively healthy range weight wise.

      Yawn. As Lisa mentioned, potatoes are healthy. You, as an individual, may have low carb tolerance. Others do not. Carbohydrates do not inherently hinder weight loss unless you eat them in excess, same as proteins and fats. Plenty of people regularly eat rice, potatoes, and pasta while simultaneously losing weight/maintaining a healthy weight. All bodies are not created equally. Be balanced and do what works for you. We don’t need to demonize carbohydrates.

    • @nataliak.8251
      @nataliak.8251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      very good point, actually this "experiment" means nothing at all, no other variables were considered, there were only 8 people in total which is just too few to actually count this as an experiment and there was no repetition of the "experiment" to compare results. So the result has no statistical value at all. The only "experiments" that have some meaning are those they do in the markets etc that there are a lot of people of different ages and gender, but even the. there are other variables to consider such as the culture and the fact that most people prefer food they are used to and so on. So basically the show throws random statistics that mean nothing to prove their point (not that they are necessarily wrong but they have no actual arguements to prove it). What they are are saying is probably from actual science experiments but the way they try to show it is just bad and means nothing.

      @@harkerx9029 I think this is why they don't do programs like that with all skinny one fat or all fat one skinny. Because that would basically be the same as what regular people deal with... My husband is textbook healthy, I'm very sick and have a diet existing on picking at things and mostly just full of hot air, while our kids battle the bulge while we chew them out about it routinely. I really want to know what you do when your home is divided by extremely fussy (due to medical reasons) eaters, vs the bulge who is of the habit of stealing our muffins from the cupboard. No, they don't talk about the fact that there is no specifically healthy safe food. All are bad when abused period. I think the compulsive behavior is the primary component because all of us eat and therefore it is the greatest mystery as to why some people are so metabolically different from each other. Even though we are genetically related, we are still sk vastly different in how we process and use our energy and fats. Bottom line you can look like Rosie O'Donnell but eat like Angelina Jolie and it would not matter because the vehicle your driving is a lemon and it sucks unfortunately. That's my whole theory of why some are fat and some are thin. ❤💚❤💚❤💚 Happy Christmas and Blessed New Year, 2020.

    I can say this as someone with multiple chronic sleep issues, it absolutely makes you crave food. Your body is not rested and is low on energy, and it wants something, anything, that can just get it that extra bit of energy. When it gets bad enough it's legitimately a "eat something NOW or I'm shutting down" feeling. If you think you might have a sleep disorder absolutely get it checked out. This show and their lack of self-awareness makes me very paranoid about how much I do that I am not aware of.... It can't be just these people on the show, I suspect it might be more of an average, which statistically would include me.

    Use a calorie deficit calculator to work out how many calories you should eat to be an ideal weight.
    It really does come down to a few hundred calories everyday more for it to be the difference between maintaining a weight to losing weight over time.

      MsGilly1967 basically only drinking water for 16-18 hrs a day so your body is in ketosis and burns fat. the person above’s schedule is 4pm to 8am. so they’ll eat at 8am until 4pm then after 4pm, only drink water until 8am the next morning then eat again (following the same routine each days ). hopefully that makes sense.

      Yes that part bothered me a lot! 550 is totally fine, assuming it's a meal for that person.... 1500-1600 total for the day would make most people (unless they are very tiny) lose or at least maintain their weight.

    The experiment at the end was a bit naff. The good sleep team consisted of three petite looking women and a slim tall one. The other team had two men, a tall, naturally larger built woman and a woman who looked overweight. I don't disagree with the science itself, but I bet the bad sleep team would have naturally eaten more regardless of the sleep they got.
