Since I became ill with psychosis and later diagnosed with schizophrenia I have taken antipsychotics. Antipsychotics are a very common and big part of treatment for schizophrenia and in this video i'm going to talk a little about some of the things I would have wanted to know before taking them. Like som of the many, many side effects, the way it interacts with your body and how it affects it.

I think doctors lie to make you start medication. They said to me “oh don’t worry. Not every medication causes weight gain. Some even help you lose weight bc now you can relax”. But what they don’t tell you is that it is inevitable!! Everyone who takes it says so! Because it gives you hunger AND it slows down your metabolism. It messes with your hormones. So you gain weight no matter what. At least 80% of the time. 😢 I wish they would just be honest about it!
Because it hurts to gain weight and no way to control it. I gained so much weight even in just a few weeks.
Yes it also made me so tired. Just spacing out.

The meds absolutely suck, it's just that the schizophrenia sucks more sometimes. So you get to choose between two bad situations and that's if the meds even effectively treat the disease. I was forced onto one med that didn't even work but caused massive weight gain, a permanent movement disorder and emotional numbing on top of psychosis that just continued on. It was misery for years.

Just wanted to add that there is a whole group of movement disorders you can get, some of which are usually permanent and may or may not respond to meds. I got vocal and motor tics, likely Tardive Tourettism and they've lasted long after being off the meds. Docs also don't know much about them and can be dismissive all around.

Without being informed about side effects,one cannot form an informed decision. I suppose the Doctors are scared that the patient might refuse to take the medication.Another major side effect is impotence for many if not most men This further complicates the hope of living a normal life.
yes! if I had known some of the side effects I experienced beforehand I would have considered which medication to try more carefully. and yes, I have heard that impotens is common for men also, and I do believe it can affect normal life very much like you say. thank you for watching! 😊
Hi Kimberly. Thanks for doing these videos. The worst side effect I had from anti-psychotics like risperidone was a condtion called Akathisia. This is an inability to keep your body still. With akathisia your body is constantly in motion and it is exhausting. I don't get it anymore thanks to the new medication I am on thank goodness, but I do also suffer from "slow thinking" from time to time and also it can be difficult to use the knowledge I read in books immediately. Your words and the things you describe ring so many bells for me and it is comforting to hear that someone else is suffering the same thing I am suffering from and explaining it all so well.

Stop taking these drugs. I am 70 percent recovered after stopping drug
When i was on med and aftet 3 months afyer stopping these i was not able to even cry.
I am now facing of frequent urination. Too many side effects. It is better to become mad then taking these drugs. These drugs disturbs body normal functions.

Happy Saturday Kimberly, great informative video...I too take medication, it helps with the major problem, but leaves you with so many other unpleasant side effects. I feel this is why so many people choose not to take their medication...they cannot cope with the side effects. Rainy and gloomy here in Thunder Bay, Canada :(

Yes! I remember reading of side effects. After that I asked reduced medication after awhile. Luckily one medication was left out. Now only one medication works for me. I also started eating extra when I was in hospital at the beginning of treatment. Now I want to start exercising but I feel tired and starting things is more difficult. Slowly I have accepted the situation and I'm doing better now after years of taking anti psychotic medication.
glad to hear its working out for you! 😊 as for exercising, I really recommend doing it with someone who can motivate you, I always go to the gym with my mother because she helps me get there 😊

I really understand you Kimberly... I have to admit I still temper with my meds, trying to go down or lower dose because I am concerned about long term effects. Quietapine works great for sleep for me and I have little side effects on a low dose. But I also take 30mg Abilify and Lamotragine. It works well for me but I do worry about long term. I am glad you found something that works for you Kimberly with not too many side effects, it's a journey.... Sending you much love ❤️

I tend to get akathisia if i take a too high dose of my antipsychotics. It really sucks tbh 🤷🏼♂️ but at least my schizophrenia is being supressed, so that's good lol. Nice channel 👍🏻

Thank you for your videos, Kim, I've started watching you 2 days ago, I have schizophrenia for 10 years and I'm 31, from Czech republic, I can relate to your videos, also it's very calming watching someone like me, with same struggles. Can I ask you, if you work or planning to work, or if you're on disability, how much is it in Sweden? Because I'm planning to get one soon here, but it's not much, so I will have to find some part-time job at least. Good luck in your journey and hey, you're such a beautiful soul. Im glad you find some joy in my content! 🥰 im currently on disability and here it is based of what you have earned by working before, its not much but since I didn't work much before getting sick sadly, but I manage, its enough for living but its not glamorous. I do believe the average is around 1100-1300 euros a month 😊

Im on antipsychotics since 2019, it is a double edge sword but took me out of my psychotic episode but still i don't want to be on them

Very informative. Hope you find something that works for you. I have muscle stiffness from aripiprozole and am about to be tested for the beginning stages of parkonsonism- not a very nice side effect

Hi Kimberly! Ugh Drs. never want to tell anybody about side effects. Its the same here in the US. I go to my pharmacist if I need to know anything, because they know more anyway than the Dr. Ive had so many issues with anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds over many many years. I finally found one that works, but, recently I cut it back, luckily Im able to score it in the middle. I was turning into a zombie on it I was so lethargic I had to lay down every day for two hours. So now that I cut back I am doing better. Just hope it continues to help with the deprssiona nd anxiety. But I wish I could find something to help with the IBS! I hope your Dr watches your vlog! I've had a number of the side effects you mentioned. I'm fifty three and I believe at my age I don't need much medication. I only take two, an anti depressant and a low dose of antipsychotic. I still have dry mouth and sensitivity to sunlight but not hunger and lethargy. I experienced very bad effects going off in 1997, under doctor's care, and put up with the side effects then on. Recently I have gotten by on a relatively small dose.

I've been on several medications over the years. They would help me, but I would take them reluctantly. For ten years I was always looking for ways to reduce my dose or go off medication completely. But now I am fully compliant and have been for almost six consecutive years. I guess I am just hoping the side-effects will go away over time. One persistent adverse effect I have endured is dysphagia. Lately it seems to have been improving, but it is still prevalent. It is caused by a partial paralysis of my oropharynx - due to my antipsychotic. But it is what it is.
I have also tried lowering my dose but it hasn't worked so fa. I also had trouble with dysphagia when I took quetiapine, which is why I changed meds. I wish you well and thank you for watching! 💚

thank you! 🥰 I haven't talked or interacted with many who manage without meds, I saw that Living well with schizophrenia made an interview with someone who managed without medications. if it works for them then I don't see the harm but I don't think I would be able to handle psychosis without it. 😊
Another thing about many antipsychotics is in addition to increasing your appetite and making you very inactive, they also slow your metabolism, so you end up with a perfect storm for weight-gain. What antipsychotics are you on?
yes, exactly! currently im on kariprazine (I think that's what it is called in English at least.). I quit olanzapine about 8 months ago and thanks to that I have lost 40 pounds so far... 🙃

I like my meds, but I also let them shape me. The abilify made me permanently restless, energetic and jovial. This emotional pattern continued after I went off em, and the Trilafon has made me very mindful and non reactive. Unthinking even... It's not so bad if you're this way normally.
ah nice, I got very restless and shaky by Abilify, it was very uncomfortable 🙃
All medications have side effects, some more than others. The thing is though that you would probably be worse off without them. Also when it comes to side effects some are more common than others. For example if the numbers of people dying of a medication was too high it wouldn't be allowed on the market.

I was wondering, have you ever tried any form od CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) for your illness? I read it can be realy helpfull if added to standard medication therapy..
i have done it in the very beginning of my illness but it was more to adress my social anxiety not schizophrenia 😊

What shocked me going on antipsychotics were the many side effects. A-typicals didn't do it for me. After trying five A-typicals, not being able to handle the side effects, I switched to the Typical antipsychotic medication Perphenazine (Trilafon) which I'm currently on. I have few and mild side effects, so I'm overall happy with it. I'm not sure how strong antipsychotic effect it has though, but so far I have kept the psychosis away and it's been 3-4 years.

it usually does but how long it will take to fade away is very individual, for me it took changing meds and a few months but I still have some days where I feel zombie-like... I wish you well! 💚
Hi my daughter has just lost 30 kilos from ozempic. She had trouble with it at first light vomiting but that passed. It has boosted her confidence tremendously
She has severe schizophrenia as well.

Wow, that's a huge list of side effects! Is there a different type of medicine available which has less side effects?
Sadly no, pharmaceuticals have yet to invent a antipsychotic with less side effects even though the newer generation are know for having slightly less side effects than the older generation, but it can of course be very individual. I have had to switch meds a lot due to side effects having to much of an impact on my health and everyday life 🙃

Geodon put me into a wheelchair for 3 years, Risperdal gave me horrible nervous system reaction, I couldn't walk forward just backward, oh, yes and the 100 pound weight gain was inevitable..I'm taking a new antiphchotic, 6 months, called Capltya..no weight gain or TD or EPS yet, Thank God😢

I am so sorry for the hell you experienced! What a shame that in our technologically advanced age so much medication still has so many horrible side effects! You are a very brave person to have it made through all this horrible ordeal.

Doctors can be so bad sometimes.. they say just take it and you will be right.. I hate it. And they don’t say anything about side effects. Sometimes your condition can become even worse after taking the medicines. It happened to me. I had to change medication lot of the times because of it. Doctors must be more thoughtful.

i have already tried Abilify, and I felt very unstable and jittery by it so I didnt have it for long, sadly.
