Almost got this engine, trained on the atom at paraschool. But at 200lbs I decided on the moster 185 . If I ever get back down to 170 I may consider selling my moster and getting the Atom. Love how smooth n quiet it is.
Very useful stuff, I'm fairly new to my Atom 80 with only 90 ish hours on it so far and not really done any maintenance on it yet. I think I need to give it some love.
Thanks for the update Matthew. Unless I understood (very possible) you said that you use 50:1 with Dominator. Just curious as to why not 66:1? Loved the video
It's what they recommend for off-road purposes and what others have used. If you feel it, Dominator is definitely a little thinner than Motul....so I feel better also at 50:1
Matt, thanks for your video! You've got me interested in the oil topic so I figured I'd dig it a bit deeper. The flash point of Dominator is 102*C (215.6*F), the Moul 800's is 252*C (485*F). The manual for Atom80 states the nominal EGT is 550*C (1022*F) and if I read the EGT correctly to be the temperature at which the fuel/oil/air mixture burns in combustion chamber then the flash point difference between Dominator and Motul becomes negligible. On the other hand however, having the Dominator burn at 1/5th of the EGT temperature (102/550) vs Motul's 1/2nd of it (252/550) makes me think the Dominator might not lubricate the cylinder and piston well enough even with 1:50 proportions. What do you think about it?
Awesome the exhaust may get that hot but the metal piston cylinder etc don't get that hot (1000F). So as far as lubrication goes what matters is how hot the cylinder and the piston get.
@@matthewpesce765 I had 2 engine failures one on Saber and one on klotz so I'm switching to dirty motul for 100 hours and will report back. My first failure was at 100 hours on my top 80 second was at 72 hours atom. Both wrist pin bearing failures.Hoping motul will do the trick.I already notice a nice wet oil ring between my spark plug and head.I didn't have that before.
Great Videos, thank you!! I have an Atom with 60 hours and have had several failures... clutch, pipe, brackets totally inexcusable in my opinion especially considering my Top 80 has over 200 hours with literally not one single failure, original piston rings etc so I do not give the Atom such a good review. I have used Amsoil for over 20 years since Kart racing a Yamaha KT100, excellent choice for oil, thanks again for your videos!!
@@577buttfan That's interesting. What ratio were you using with the Saber? I still have a gallon of that stuff that I'm not so sure I'll be using now. I wonder if it was the oil that killed your crank or possibly some other factor..
I want to get into paramotoring. I'm leaning towards electric. Specifically openppg. It's not that would have a problem with all this maintenance (it would kinda be fun) but I'm really busy with work when the weather is nice. How long do these atom 80's hold up with decent service? Can I guy get 500 hours out of the bottom end?

Really really good to know about the oil. Thank you, sir. I'm just (potentially) getting into the sport :)

It's possible, but I know people who have been using Sabre and Dominator for years in Nitros and Mosters with no issues.

My top 80 dropped a crank at 110 hours using amsoil saber.I use Klotz full synthetic now.

Hi from Ukraine)
Fair review, thanks for sharing, currently looking for new engine, my top-80 have more than 250 hours. Subscribed.
superb review, thanks for sharing your experience
Hi Matt. I see you are using a mix ratio of 50:1. If you were breaking in a new Atom 80, what ratio would you use if using the Amsoil Dominator?
Good question... probably 40:1
Cool prop! Did you do a dip on it or from maker?
It's a vinyl sticker
Matt great video. Your cht temps seam on the low side. How are you measuring the temperature?
CHT. 250-265 cruise
7600-7800 RPM for cruise. 21m wing. 110kg all up weight.

I'd say so, Im at 360 on my current motor. I put almost 400 on my last one. No issues.
Gear oil change to Amzoil synthetic?
What Is your weight?
109Kg all up weight
