CashlessProductions thanks for this!
Colin Williams Sure thing! Heck of a resource, thanks for uploading.
What a source of inspiration! Thank you!!!
Thanks for sharing this "gold" 40 minutes of your playing Mr.Williams!! Bravo for every single minute!!
Thanks so much for sharing this, Colin! A lot to learn from here, and really cool to see how focused and concentrated you are throughout the whole 40 min!
This is a really phenomenal performance.
Thank you Mr. Williams for sharing this video and inspiring musicians around the world.
Excellent, thank you for all this information.
Congratulations on the beautiful sound and technique, success !!! Big hug!!!
How does one play all these pieces flawlessly... incredible, hats off to you dude!
Fantastic playing!
Your music is fantastic! I like listening the popular music.
I show this video to my students any time they ask what good audition preparation sounds like, and recently I have been coming back to this video a lot myself as a motivator to continue to work on my excerpts
I am really impresed, it's an excellent work, I definetly feel inspired with this video, I have am audotion in two weeks, so, now I have more clear ideas of how I have to do my next audition, thank you and greetings from México!
Fantástico!!!!! Sonoridade e técnica limpa!!!!!
Um excelente exemplo de como tocar trombone com mestria!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for posting this!
Camden Brown Hey I know you
Hi man, you perfect TROMBONIST, BRAVO!
You’re hired sir!
cleanest william tell excerpt i’ve ever heard
I want this man’s sound. Absolutely stunning.
Go practice
Filip Petraš I will sir. I will.
The first time I watched this I expected it to be kinda rough like other audition prep videos I have seen.
After watching it, I thought to myself man this guy played almost flawlessly and sounded really good. I saw the video was a few years old and figured he is probably playing in a pretty good orchestra these days based on how well he sounded for this video. I googled it and had a bit of a giggle seeing his is currently the associate principal of the NYPhil.
I am clearly ignorant of who is currently playing in the best symphonies in the world these days but my ear's intuition seems to be spot on.
Beautiful playing. This will be helpful in audition prep. This is a wonderful resource to share.
He very good. But the reality is that there are many great players. The ones who study with teachers in major orchestras tend to get into the same orchestras for a few different reasons.
Orchestras have to hold auditions because of union regulations, but normally they know who they want well in advance. Years ago, conductors would simply have promising players play for them and hire them on the spot, if interested. I think that system was actually much more fair because conductors wanted the best players in their orchestra and had the skills to judge true musicianship. Other people need to know this before spending thousands to travel to auditions where they don't stand a chance. Sometimes there is a fantastic player who came out of nowhere with no connections. They will usually allow someone like that to the semi final round and then cut them, giving the illusion that things are fair since they weren't cut out in the first round (but sometimes they are cut from the first round simply to get rid of them). Music is great but the corruption makes the business horrid.
@@billyhill7132 sounds like someone lost an audition...
@@billyhill7132 I don't think you're listening with an objective ear. A discerning listener could pick out aspects of Colin's playing that are similar to Joe's... BUT, he's still at a level above and beyond most players- probably including yourself.
Paul Gilles I’ve heard From a lot of professors/professionals that the job of a panelist is to make the list manageable. So anything that justifies cutting you they WILL jump on it to meet the music directors request
@@janeisnotokay3284, sounds like a lazy trombonist to me.
well played
Boy have you ever got a beautiful sound. Hope the audition goes or went well!
Arthur Cramer Hes the associate principal at the New York phil right now
Good!!
You are my ideal sound. Wonderful job, I'm looking to get the sheet music you play throughout this video and learn it all. I have a couple of the more difficult ones, but as a high-school student excerpts are a pain to get. Despite, wonderful job you sound like a fine tenor trombonist.
Go to brass excerpts . Com, they should be there
IMSLP, just print them all out.
Moses un Aron ✨😍😍😍✨
Thanks a lot for this. I usually study with this video for having a good reference of any excerpt tha you play in here. Could anyone help me by saying whos Marie´s excerpt composer ?. Thanks again and best wishes for everyone
Amazing playing Colin, thanks so much for sharing this. 2 questions: 1) in what situation would you encounter a round with this many excerpts? And 2) I noticed you played tuba mirum and also sprach again when you weren't satisfied with your first performance. Would you recommend doing it this way in an actual audition, or would you typically request to the audition proctor to play it again first? Thanks, you're an inspiration.
just from what I know(Im no Colin Williams) 99% of the time it will be satisfactory to move on, depending what audition you are taking, or you will be cut right there. My only guess is if you completely miss the first entrance would you have any chance of restarting. The people behind the panel know that all candidates are nervous, so if you flub one start they probably wouldn't care. Don't do it more than once though.
@sturminator444 actually, that's not true. I have yet to play or listen to a note perfect audition. But if you miss many notes, you're not going to do well. At the very highest level committees are able to distinguish between a great player who just happened to miss and a player who has actual technical issues.
Really interesting that Marie is on there! Would that be on a list because of pops concerts? I haven't seen Dorsey on an orchestra audition before.
That’s exactly right! It was to make sure the candidate had at least some understanding of that style.
REAL TROMBON SUPER HERO from another dimension ❗
Is there anywhere I can get the sheet music for Marie, it’s such a beautiful excerpt
great rhenish
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Fantastic! I'm an aspiring professional struggling to fund my Bachelor's. Wished I could attend a conservatory under Joseph Alessi or someone of equal caliber such as yourself.
Considering auditioning for some sub positions at an orchestra or two though, for experience, professional sources, and repertoire.
I hope your musical pursuits are going well! I’m going to be a senior in high school about to ship off to college.
@@tromboneman4517 Oh, good luck my guy!

Was this for Mr Williams NY Phil audition?
If you happen to see this, how old were you at the time of this recording? I’m at the age where I need to make a decision on whether to go into music or not and seeing so much hard work going into excerpts at what seems to be an age not much older than myself is very inspiring.
Also this is slightly off topic but I know you have had past experiences with very serious lip injuries and learning how to get past that. I myself have had to deal with a lip injury that has taken me out of practicing for about the past 3 months and was told by an oral surgeon to take another month off . Even then there is no guarantee that I will be any better upon returning. I’m not quite sure how to take this news and if I’m being honest I am on the edge of breaking and just quitting as a result of a ton of mental stress put on by myself and others. How did you make it through your injury and did you ever feel like quitting and just putting away the horn for good? Thanks!
He’s 32-33 here. It takes years to get THIS good. Don’t be discouraged! Just start practicing a lot more and get started now.
Go down the David Vining rabbit hole for injury recovery + prevention. i.e. his book "What every trombonist needs to know about the body" Trombone can and should be a life long journey! I've taken years where trombone goes on the back burner and I barely play, but currently my playing is in some ways better than its ever been - 5 years after university.
Nice sound Mr William! Shires?
Absolutely! Although this was a different model than I play now. The video was made a long time ago now!
Hi professor Colin Williams
What audio device did you use to record this video?
he recorded it like 10 years ago so this probably wouldn't be the best equipment
So sad... No train ever going on this track...
What year was this?!
It feels like 5000 years ago, but I believe it was 2009 or so.
