Bourgeois Trombone Concerto Op 114 with Colin Williams and Kosuke Akimoto
This is a live performance in Osaka, Japan. Yu Tamaki and I performed around Japan in various forms in early May of 2023. It's not note perfect, but I hope you enjoy this performance!

A blast from the past found in an old bin. Apologies for the terrible video quality, this is from a time before smartphones and easy video recording. Audio is ok, though! Colin Williams, Nathan Zgonc, Chris Branagan, and Larry Bird on bass.

This was part of the project that Nikki and I took on during Covid this summer to help keep us going during an uncertain time. The music is from the heart, all things that we love to play. Due to some technical issues, Brad White's part of the performance isn't available yet. We'll publish another video once his portion becomes available. Enjoy! #trombone #tromboneplayer #seshires #iplayshires
Colin Adversity Mock Audition

When preparing for orchestral auditions, I think it's important to create a mock audition with less than ideal circumstances to overcome. In this audition I tried to have the deck stacked against me in a few different ways. I allowed myself very little warm up immediately before I started playing to simulate an audition proctor coming to get me before I was really ready to go. I wasn't given a ...

    If you happen to see this, how old were you at the time of this recording? I’m at the age where I need to make a decision on whether to go into music or not and seeing so much hard work going into excerpts at what seems to be an age not much older than myself is very inspiring. Also this is slightly off topic but I know you have had past experiences with very serious lip injuries and learning how to get past that. I myself have had to deal with a lip injury that has taken me out of practicing for about the past 3 months and was told by an oral surgeon to take another month off . Even then there is no guarantee that I will be any better upon returning. I’m not quite sure how to take this news and if I’m being honest I am on the edge of breaking and just quitting as a result of a ton of mental stress put on by myself and others. How did you make it through your injury and did you ever feel like quitting and just putting away the horn for good? Thanks!

      Go down the David Vining rabbit hole for injury recovery + prevention. i.e. his book "What every trombonist needs to know about the body" Trombone can and should be a life long journey! I've taken years where trombone goes on the back burner and I barely play, but currently my playing is in some ways better than its ever been - 5 years after university.

    The first time I watched this I expected it to be kinda rough like other audition prep videos I have seen. After watching it, I thought to myself man this guy played almost flawlessly and sounded really good. I saw the video was a few years old and figured he is probably playing in a pretty good orchestra these days based on how well he sounded for this video. I googled it and had a bit of a giggle seeing his is currently the associate principal of the NYPhil. I am clearly ignorant of who is currently playing in the best symphonies in the world these days but my ear's intuition seems to be spot on. Beautiful playing. This will be helpful in audition prep. This is a wonderful resource to share.

    • @billyhill7132
      @billyhill7132 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He very good. But the reality is that there are many great players. The ones who study with teachers in major orchestras tend to get into the same orchestras for a few different reasons. Orchestras have to hold auditions because of union regulations, but normally they know who they want well in advance. Years ago, conductors would simply have promising players play for them and hire them on the spot, if interested. I think that system was actually much more fair because conductors wanted the best players in their orchestra and had the skills to judge true musicianship. Other people need to know this before spending thousands to travel to auditions where they don't stand a chance. Sometimes there is a fantastic player who came out of nowhere with no connections. They will usually allow someone like that to the semi final round and then cut them, giving the illusion that things are fair since they weren't cut out in the first round (but sometimes they are cut from the first round simply to get rid of them). Music is great but the corruption makes the business horrid.
