I worked for a retailer which received these demo units and one store accidentally sold the demo unit to a customer 😅 they wondered why it came pre-setup with “people’s contacts and photos” on it lmao. Apple used to let us keep the demo units and just reset/sell them cheaper but now they ask for them back
That's so funny, what a unique situation that person must have been in 😅
Someone sold a demo iMac and Apple didn’t like that here
I bought an iPhone 11 pro a few years back from a lady who owned a vodafone shop and it was a demo phone and the model number started with 3. It worked perfectly fine and I even got the battery replaced once at apple and they said nothing.
Yea rip they usually destroy the boards
@@hendyazaliwait a minute, so you’re telling me working for an Apple Store means you get the latest iPhone for free every year?
Where do I sign up 😭
I currently use a demo model iPhone 14 Pro Max. The demo software has been removed and it just runs normal iOS and functions 100% normally. I got it from the electronics store I work at. We are allowed to resell demos so I bought it as soon as we got the 15 series in that replaced them. I got a super good deal on it too since it was a demo.
If I may ask, what company do you work for? Sounds interesting, as I work for a tech repair company
JB HI-FI and harvey norman sold ex demo devices till recently not sure now
That's cool af.
@@rafaelappleseed8140 Used to work at JB and they most likely still do, depends how old. Just ask on the day they get newer models and agree to a bunch of liability stuff (i.e. no return warranty) :p
@@boussIRL I work for Staples Canada
Interesting note that the home screen icons can't be rearranged. I remember back when I was a kid, while playing with a display iPhone in a Best Buy once, I entered rearrangement mode (by tapping and holding an icon), but couldn't figure out how to get out of rearrangement mode-- I couldn't open up apps anymore since the icons were all jiggling, and I didn't know you had to press the Home button to exit that mode. I ended up just walking away from it, lol.
Imagine making a sick screensaver that tons of people will want to use and then going to real length to not allow anyone use it.
thats modern day apple for ya
People in the EU could figure out a way to allow install this now if it gets dumped online
It's like a program called "Deepfreeze" when installed and configured to protect the windows system partition or the entire drive. Then you can wreck the system and delete the files and when the computer restarts, everything goes back to normal.
Yep, especially because I was reminded of how there used to be a macOS version of Deep Freeze, though I'm not sure if that's still being produced.
@@kbhasimy college still has that installed on the Macs so they reset when restarted.
@@kbhasiyes the macOS version is stil downloadable from faronics deep freeze site(late)
Hugh: This is my home now Craig.
DankPods: You shouldn’t have done that.
underrated comment
Yes lol
Shouldn't mess with ol Mate Craig
We probably won’t get another Hugh Jeffrey’s video for a while, if we ever even get another
@@SoosRamirez1 yeah. That could totally be possible.
This is a demo firmware on the iPhone. It can be installed to any device actually if you know how to do it. Can be removed by triple tapping the upper right corner of the screen with two fingers when the screensaver is active.
And unlike Samsung demos - it is a perfectly usable iPhone with a baseband and all the rest just a different part number - remove the demo content and you’re good to go
How do I download it on the iPhone 7?
@@Vuknovic_04 i have it as an app called screensaver++. don't remember where i got it from but i am jailbroken. and i dont know how to use it as a proper screensaver
Any chance you got some instructions for doing that?
@@in_sympathy Just like with LeapFrog Epic demo units I messed around with some six years ago. LeapFrog didn't cripple the hardware fortunately, it's the firmware that's more or less a pain to deal with until my friends and I were able to figure it out.
I also have a demo iPhone X (model number starts with 3D...). I've been using it for years. You can restore it with iTunes and there is no difference from other iPhones. I even had the battery replaced by Apple without any problems. In my opinion, the iPhone X is the most beautiful iPhone Apple has ever made. I will never sell it.
That notch is HIDEOUS
What do you expect? It’s an iPhone X
Of course, the notch is gonna be hideous
On the model of the video you just have to change the charging module, the demo doesn't even have the data cables
@@MilesProwerTailsFox That's not true. The hardware is identical to other iPhones. DFU always works, he must have done something wrong.
@@daniel5074 no no, some demo iphones I had had don't have the data cables for some reason
I think, reason why it does not show up when connected to computer is, that data lines on USB/Lightning port are disconnected physically. maybe if you open it up and swap charging port, it may work.
Even if You swap charging ports it will still not work
it needs to unenrolled from DCOTA before you can do any of that.
@@W2YZdo you think it still can be done after all these years for the X in this video?
It can now be connected to a pc but will be iCloud locked at the Apple Store and you shouldn’t do it anyways as type c/lighting to 3.5mm audio plug
Wait a minute... If you was to unenroll the phone, like at 4:53 where it says unenroll, would that not change it to a regular iPhone X with all of the standard features?
Anyway, very strange device and not one I've ever seen before! Definitely have it on display looping the screensaver, making sure to charge it periodically so it doesn't run flat.
Yes they will. I have an iPhone 6S, X, 11 Pro, 12, 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Demo Units which are totally standard devices after unenrolling
This makes me wonder, could you enroll a standard iPhone into the demo program?
I thought newer demo devices had no access to mobile networks to make them less valuable for thieves@@romani48
@@iSlammedMyKindle According to other comments, yes you can if you know how to do it
@@iSlammedMyKindle you can. Demo programs are managed by a local mac (we usualy use a mac mini) and a specific management platform. In the old days you just had to unenroll the idevices in the device itself. Nowadays you have to unenroll it in the device and in the platform or else it will always be a demo device (it will reinstall the demo stuff after activation).
I got 5 demo phones in the mail by accident. They were supposed to be recycled but got mixed up in shipping. I wiped them all and I hope they weren't more valuable with their software but they still have their unique model numbers at least. I divided them up upon me and my family and I still use one of them as a secondary device daily. Some would call this stealing but Alabama state law calls it keeping an unsolicited good, or 5 "very goods" to be more accurate.
on demo software they are WAY more valuable...
@@cirkulxwho cares, he or she put it to good use
I had one years ago , it was an iPhone 4 with no SIM card but it actually had 4s hardware
2:12 i like that album tho
Came looking for this comment 😂
i love Hugh's reaction to seeing "Eat The Elephant"'s album art xD
I've always wished they had the screensaver installed or installable on retail phones. It's so pretty and every time I went to the apple store or walmart I watched it all the way through.
@@hendyazaliif you jailbreak it, you can install demo software on it
2:14 I would suggest trying to listen to “Doomed” from that album. A perfect circle is amazing.
This really isn’t as rare as you think. Apple has a program called DCOTA that enrolls iPhone into demo mode. If you tap three fingers in the top right corner you’ll see a menu for demo mode in which you can change the demo options.
Was looking for this comment
Why'd you have to ruin it?😭this is very cool to know tho.
@@X1ZR no it is cool but when I see something labeled as rare when it isn’t, I’d be doing a disservice not letting the average consumer know
Btw A Perfect Circle is a great band and you should take a listen!
All of that.
Awesome! I have a Galaxy S6 edge demo phone that has similar weird quirks to it. I don’t plug it in very often because it constantly auto plays this video of some girl talking about how great the S6 edge is lol.
Really interesting, I always assumed the demo units just had a profile loaded on to them to lock out certain functions. Makes more sense that they are a whole different edition of iOS though. I wonder if they can be easily converted to regular units.
Not without jailbreaking
@@lowwastehighmelaninBut how do you jailbreak without being able to connect to a computer?
I did it with an ipad pro 2017. Dfu and new ios
@@lowwastehighmelaninhe explained it at the end. You can unenroll it as a demo unit by holding 3 fingers in the upper right corner at the screensaver. That will reset the phone and remove the demo mode, making it a retail one (except for the model number, warranty status etc.)
(2:01) That's what the 555-XXXX numbers are
(3:55) I think the demo devices restart on their own overnight (presumably after many hours of inactivity and while plugged in to power) as part of that.
"this is my home now, Craig" got me rolling and cackling all over lol
BTW in Sri Lanka you can buy Demo iPhones from Apple Authorised sellers. obviously they wipe the demo os and give the original iOS installed when you buy it.
So if you were purchasing an iPhone X on iOS 11 with the demo os, would you expect to receive the device on iOS 11 with out demo, or would the firmware be updated to iOS 16?
Man, I miss my iphone x. it was the perfect size and weight
That’s a phone from the store that’s why it has that same Screensaver and whatever and whatever store that phone came from it still has the screensaver connected and everything it never got disconnected. That’s why it’s running iOS 12.0.
Hey, Hugh, I've found a loophone that not even Apple could fix, for now. It's just that you need to log in using your Apple ID, then use another phone to access iCloud's Find My, then wipe the device from there. It's really easy. I did this once on a demo device in an Apple Authorized Retailer I once patronized in. Glad to say that the Apple employee did not like this, and had to issue a replacement for the device I had wiped clean off of.
The screensavers are cool though. Kinda remind me about the insaniquarium tank used as a screensaver. XD
Wow this is the first time I’ve ever seen insaniquarium mentioned since I played it back in like 2003
These Demo iPhones are so cool! I also have two iPhone SE Demos on iOS 9.3
It’s so cool to see the screensaver and these cool other features!
Imagine if Criag's smart home actually started going berserk, and we had no idea
It would be cool if these could be emulated for preservation purposes years in the future
The fact he can get demo iphones shows his success
I have a demo LG wing
Pretty much anyone can get demo devices if you know where to look
its not that hard to find those
@@Hezyneat
you can literally buy these from your local privately owned Phone Store lmao.
It does make sense why they use demo models, especially with people stealing them from the Apple store in the US.
As a person who works in this kind of stores and for Apple, I can install these demo iOS versions on any iPhone. It's interesting to see all those differences
god the iphone x was beautiful when it came out, still is but of course more so back then
Yes the screen saver should be available to anyone
As a Python developer I use the Faker library to generate fake names, addresses, phone numbers etc. Invaluable for creating test data and filler that isn't the overused Lorem Ipsum which is meant to avoid people focussing on the meaning but instead always provokes a side-tracking question about "all that Latin".
So when those thieves run into an Apple store, rip the phone off the display stands and go running out the door, that's what they end up with🤣🤣🤣 Nice find👍🏽👍🏽
1:51 me too bro me too
For me, iOS jailbraked is at least usable.. without it, its just an MDM from apple...
It’s pretty much cloud based now yea
4:50 imma do this in the store.
worked at cricket wireless and the iphones all had this stuff on it. There was a rule not to sell the demo phones to people, i think there were specific circumstances where you could if the phone was going off sale and it was the only model, it would just be discounted. But its cool seeing someone go ahold of one
Screensaver on an iphone would be pretty pointless. if you're not looking at the phone you'd want the screen to be off to save battery.
I have that screensaver in an app, its called screensaver++ for the sideloaders/jailbreak users, and no way to use it as a proper screensaver, so way less cool of course!
As someone who works retail, when I found out about the three finger hold (by playing around) I was very tempted to unenroll and reset it
I suspect no screensaver standard on iPhones is because graphics calculations can use a lot of energy. Those phones at the Apple Store are all plugged in.
I - myself - use and bought a Demo 13 Pro cause it was sold to employes for half price when changed up to the 14 line up (the whole 13 Line except 13 mini was sold to the employes) unfortunately they obviously unenrolled them from the store so its basically a normal iPhone just with the Demo on the Box and Model Number.. maybe still cool for collectors? idk.
should try to get the lightning port replaced if it wont show up even in dfu mode.
When he spinned 😂 his head around does that actually work faster for face ID to finish scanning your face because I thought you had to turn certain positions like side to side for it to see your full face ( maybe I'm wrong )
Since the phone is on display it would make sense to have a screen saver. And while a lot of people probably wouldn't use a screen saver unless it's charging, i still would have liked the option
Cool, I do have a iPhone 12 Pro demo on iOS 14.1! Although the apps and screen saver won’t work
Screen saver would kill the battery real quick
a couple years ago i figured out how to dump the desktop versions of those screensavers from demo macs, and yeah they do look pretty cool so it's kind of a missed opportunity
I’m very suprised it hasent bricked itself I’m guessing it wasent set to lost mode
i dont think older demo iphones had those features inside of demo units. someone correct me if im wrong tho
@@notraeon yea IDK ether
I do remember older demo iPhones that had their own Touch ID app just like this phone that has a Face ID app
If Hugh can get any iPhone with a demo version, it will rise in value. That’s a nice find btw!
I actually have an iPad 3rd gen ("The New iPad") demo unit. I went to an authorized retailer on launch day and was told they were sold out, then they asked me if I wanted to purchase their demo unit which I agreed.
Hi Hugh ! Please help me with a step by step method of unlocking an Iphone 8 plus I bought with an icloud lock
There must be a way to connect it to a computer as I remember the Apple guy would come in store and update the demo iPhones every now and again.
The Shut Down button is present in iOS 11 on iPhone X. (source; my 11.2.1 iPhone X)
It also most likely didn’t show on Apple Configurator because iTunes was also running?
"Move your head slowly"
Hugh: Headbangs!
Let’s get Hugh to a million subs by the end of the year!
5:04 - isn't that the same music that Mat from TechMoan uses in his outtro? :D
Newer Apple Demo devices are supposedly trackable and they can remotely wipe them from what I understood from my time working at a retail cell phone location.
"other than that, there is nothing much else you can do with this device" - What about using it as a way to get replacement parts, such as screen, battery, camera and so on. I am not sure if the X is old enough to not have all those annoying Apple repair restrictions, so this could be a great way to get replacement parts if needed.
Craig Rogers? I thought it was always John Appleseed
The one number you showed had a 555 prefix which doesn't exist in America which is why movie phone numbers will be 555, it's impossible to ring the number..
I had a demo unit for an iPhone 5 i purchased from EBay, the device was actually thinner and lighter than the normal iPhone 5
Love this video ( commenting on a demo iPad I had for a bit now)
if you put wallpaper in the apple store, you will see if closed the store, all devices are off. when store is open, goes back to normal.
It's interesting to watch this video on an iPhone 10 made for the US market
hey man that perfect circle record rocks
I know somebody who has a demo iPhone SE and that connects to the computer just fine..
4:45 time to unenroll all iphones is stores
I have an iPhone 5s demo still running iOS 7. A few things you didn't mention: you cannot add websites to the homescreen, you cannot install profiles, safari also gets reset on reboot but for whatever reason messages and call history do not. Mine doesn't have the USB restriction so I managed to save all the demo apps as for whatever reason unlike app store apps they are unencrypted and can simply be copied to a PC and sideloaded onto another device. Kinda neat as they are old versions of apps that you can no longer find in the app store.
Biggest Joke it hasn't got iOS 17. It was the first iPhone introducing a OLED Panel on Apples Devices but even the (Midrange) LCD Models got the AoD / Screensaver Functions. We can clearly see in this Video how great it would have looked like on a iPhone X Panel... Thanks for showing off!
"this is my home now craig"
that was overwhelming 💀
You should try and get a demo Samsung Galaxy device and see what it has hidden inside.
american football on the demo iphone x is incredible
So we can exit demo mode on demo iPhones in the store with just three fingers??
I thought of that right as I saw it, but I'm not risking getting banned or kicked out
its so funny looking at the home app and just randomly turning on his coffee machine and unlocking the front door
This is a demo phone it’s a demo version of the phone it has this stuff for people to see what it is and how cool it is Mac some of them have preinstalled games
2:00 Those phone numbers are not real, 555 numbers in all area code of NANP are not actually used and it's assigned for use in movies.
Demo iPhone’s aren’t actually demo iPhone’s, they just have the specific demo app and you can easily wipe the phone and use it just fine without the demo stuff like a retail iPhone
bet they added the screen saver because knew that amoled will burn in on shop displays.
2:29 this is my home now, Greg😂😂😂😂😂😂
I want a demo iPhone now.
The demos brightness looks so much brighter
Hi Jeff. If you want a ezy fix phone, then try A51 as wat I have thx
2:11 FOCUS BY CHARLI YUPPP CRAIG IS AN ANGELLL
Would be cool if you would be able to dump the Screen Saver app for everyone to try, it's looking so cool!
The app probably wouldn’t work.
I got a demo iPad Pro 11" M2 from a reseller earlier this year. It too came with loads of apps and stuff but I was able to connect it to computer and restore it. Oh also 3-finger trick didn't work for my device. I think it wasn't even enrolled to a store from the beginning. Also after restoring it automatically started 2-years retail warranty you normally get
What does the unenroll option do? I'm waiting for replies ASAP.
Can it be converted to a normal iPhone? Even though no one would like ruin the value of the demo content.
Not that hard to enroll an iPhone as a retail device, but it's a bit harder to unenroll it
You need to jailbreak that and do a full nand dump and extract IPA for the custom apps
When side loading will be available, we probably will get the screensaver app for everyone
It's not optimized for standard iOS and also ipa file is already available in internet, but it doesn't contain any Screensavers, because Screensavers on demo unit is located in root file of iPhone
3:01 you know like every ipod touch and ipads with photobooth in 2011 at retail shops.
I have an old Demi iPhone 5s with matching box. It’s one of my favorites
I found a demo unit iPhone 11 with iOS 13 and app „Face ID” it crashes everytime you open it
i use to work at Apple and they are actual phones, we uploaded the software. but it’s hard to get rid of it if you don’t have the special macbooks. basically they’re bricks for those who like to steal them.
I used to have a demo iPhone 4s I got from an Apple Store for a discount when I was younger lol
