    Pc engine manages to make the smoke and destruction effects look like they're sprite scaled. Not like the megadrive couldn't do that but like
    Why didn't it

      One of the 1st games made. If it had been made a few years later, I'm sure it'd have more effects like you say. Coders were just getting to grips to what was possible.

  • @FCEngine

    I like them both. I find PC Engine closer to the arcade
    - player sprite's walking animation
    - tighter AI that really keeps you on your toes
    - the jump physics, just like the arcade, there is a slight delay before actually jumping off the ground. Jumping is instantaneous on the Genesis.
    You can't use Genesis/Mega Drive tactics on the PC Engine. It forces you to rethink and change up your strategy.

    the pc engine has sprites that better resemble the arcade and animation the genesis left out. like the scaled body parts flying was a cool effect the arcade had. boulders in level 2. the backgrounds look better on the genesis tho. i think i would rather play the turbo version cause it seems to be harder on regular mood. genesis was too easy compared to the arcade!

    The PC Engine is the closer to arcade port. They changed up the MD port, quite a bit, for the Genesis, “altering” it’s gameplay and improving it over the arcade. So if you want the arcade experience on a console, the pc engine is much closer to the original. The Genesis is the best playing version, and has nice scrolling effects added to it, as well.

    The PC Engine supposedly has a higher color count than Sega, so it's weird to see that most their games don't look nearly as good (except Dracula X, which was a CD title) as Genesis games.

    • @Prizrak-hv6qk
      @Prizrak-hv6qk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why is it weird? On-screen colors is just one aspect of the graphics. TG-16 had the same 512 color palette but a lot more on-screen colors and larger max sprite size. At the same time, the Genesis had more scrolling planes, higher max sprite count, more sprites per line, etc. Plus, its brisk CPU config (very capable 16-bit CPU + a separate 8-bit Z80 for sound) allowed skilled devs to do many extra effects in software, which is why many of the best Genesis games go far beyond the baseline graphics hardware specs. Even the 64 color barrier was broken by games like Ranger X and Toy Story. Panorama Cotton in particular, goes way beyond the Genesis graphics specs using all that CPU power to produce a super-colorful, smooth, software sprite and background scaling-based 3D game which almost looks like something from the 32-bit era.

    Em se tratando de conversão do Arcade, Mega Drive ganha. Mas o PC Engine tem efeitos mais detalhados nas mortes e cores dos inimigos mais fieis ao original, assim como sprites maiores (os lobos estão idênticos ao arcade). Mas em contra ponto, parece que tudo esta meio ''achatado'' e falta quadros de animação, e no mega drive, a proporção esta correta!! Ponto pro mega em mais este embate!!!

Space Harrier aren't the same game but again the Mega Drive has the best version of Space Harrier 2 + the 32X option with an impressive port of the original Space Harrier so it wins by a landslide! Wonderboy 3 however is better on PCE (but mostly due to limited cart size on Mega Drive side, with a bigger one this version would have been better as well).

    I wanna say that because pc engine is 8-bit it could not morph smoothly into the beast cut scene like sega genesis does. However if the programmers would have been creative they could have went around that by just copying the cut scene from sega genesis version or arcade version by using the cd-rom. Pc engine used the cd-rom just for sound and used the 8-bit processor for music. A bad idea because pc engine sound for music is weak.

      +vida infinita É de 8bits, mas possui o mesmo clock do Mega Drive nele. E o chip gráfico é de 16 bits com um clock grande para um console doméstico no ano em que foi lançado. O que ajuda mais o Mega mesmo é que a programação foi mais bem feita nele. O PC Engine tinha potencial para fazer muito mais em um jogo simples como Altered Beast.

    • @vidainfinita4476
      @vidainfinita4476 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Apesar do clock ser quase igual ao do mega, o barramento (quantidade de bits que podem ser transmitidos ao mesmo tempo) do pc engine ainda é de 8 bits, o que, o limita. Mas concordo com vc sobre a programação do jogo Altered Beast. Poderia ter ficado melhor, vide Street Fighter 2 de pc engine!!

    • @aIanzin
      @aIanzin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Não creio que limita muito nesse ponto, visto que o PC Engine conseguiu trazer muitos jogos bons e que só seriam rodados em um hardware tão poderoso como o do Mega Drive na época. After Burner, R-Type, Soldier Blade, o próprio Shinobi entre outros são jogos que aproveitam muito do potencial gráfico e de cpu do videogame. Apesar de os melhores títulos do videogame terem sido lançados em CD, o PC Engine mostra que precisava apenas de uma equipe competente para programar no console.

    • @vidainfinita4476
      @vidainfinita4476 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sim, programação é tudo. Mas, existe uma diferença enorme em um jogo muito bem programado para um barramento 8 bits e um jogo muito bem programado para um barramento de 16. É só comparar o shinobi de pc engine e super shinobi 3 de mega. Ambos foram bem programados mas diferem em qualidade gráfica entre si. Pois são arquiteturas diferentes, separadas justamente pelo tipo de barramento!

A perfect example to this is out of this world we should all be able to agree that the Super Nintendo is a more capable unit than the Mega Drive but when you see the Super Nintendos port of it it's awful and the Mega Drive is quite accurate other than some downgrading of the graphics but the game play is all there because that game was ported from a Motorola 68k processor on the amiga to sega's 68k processor and Super Nintendos 16 bit version of the 6502.

    • @Sinn0100
      @Sinn0100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Umm...no, the Snes is not a more capable machine than the Genesis. The Sega Genesis can emulate every single Mode the Snes does through sheer brute force alone. Everything the Genesis does is through pure bone stock hardware without the need of helper chips. Further, the Motorola 68K microprocessor in the Genesis runs circles around the Snes's. Hell, even the Z-80 co-processor in the Genesis has a higher clock speed. Why do you think indy developers are still making games for the Genesis but have largely left the Snes alone? It has better hardware pure and simple.
      My God just take a look at Wolfenstein 3D, the fan fix of Street Fighter Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat 2. Every single one absolutely wipes the floor with their Snes counterparts. The Mortal Kombat fan fix is damn near arcade perfect in visuals and Wolfenstein 3d plays/looks almost as good as the PC port with pure bone stock hardware. You won't find an MMC or FX type chip anywhere in these games. You should also take a look at Thunder Force IV for a store bought game that looks good enough to be a second generation Neo Geo game.

      Oh I agree that clock speed alone doesn't do it but...it's not just a single processor that we're talking about. When you include the Genesis's second processor and ability to brute force anything the Snes can do without any specialized helper chips things begin to look a bit different. Having said that, the Genesis does have a severe weakness and that is its poor color limit. Even when developers broke the 64+shadow limit it's still less than an Snes. You have to wonder with so many options available to Sega by 1988 why they chose such a limited color pallet? I mean the PC Engine was blowing well passed that in 1987 and was a direct competitor. You would think Sega would have saw this and realized they needed more future proofing. They did this with the 68000 but not the VDP. Strange...

      Speaking of the PC Engine you know what's a damn shame? I was one of those idiots that bought into the TG-16 was inferior and not worth my time line back in 1989-1994. I didn't find out I was dead wrong until the PS1 was long out. The reason I bring this up was it was the lack of parallax scrolling that made me act that way or "confirmed my bias" on the matter.
      What I didn't know was there were some PC Engine/Core Grafx/TG-16/Super CD ROM ROM that had parallax scrolling. That technical feat was considered very impressive back in 1989-1992. After 1992 it was almost expected with every game. Of course there in stands the problem...graphics do not a good game make. I stopped being a fanboy and began playing everything from that point forward. I have a very stupid question but did you perchance get a PC Engine/Core Grafx/TG-16 mini? I couldn't find the TG-16 so I snagged a Core Grafx Mini and my God man, it is amazing. It is the best, bar none mini ever created. I love my Genesis and Snes Minis' but my Core Grafx stomps their guts out. It has PCE. TG-16, Super CD ROM ROM, and even the holy grail Super Grafx games on it. If you don't have one yet...you have to get one! ;)

    Mega Drive easily wins. ... Sega did an excellent job with the 16-Bit hardware they had, because it really was the "best" hardware with the fastest CPU and the most friendly to developers. Graphics and sound are both far better in the Mega Drive version. ... I also think it is interesting that the Genesis versions of both Altered Beast and Golden Axe are better than the Arcade versions, because they "play" so much better than the Arcade versions.

    Many sprites bigger on the PCE - like the two headed wolves - they look like little wild boar on the MD version.
    Also the arcade features no layered scrolling - so to me the PCE is more Arcade perfect overall.

      Some details are better on PC Engine but the Mega Drive version looks better overall, almost like next gen with its higher resolution, fullscreen, bigger sprites and even added parallax. Also PC Engine lacks digit speech and plays poorly while Mega Drive plays like a dream.
      And all this despite the fact that it was a very early Mega Drive game vs a game released 2 years after the PC Engine launch so it's pretty revealing as a later Mega Drive port with more knowledge of the hardware + bigger cart size would have been even better :D

      Yohko M. Nope - most sprites are way bigger on the PCE and definitely way more colourful, most of the enemy player animation is more arcade like on pce also - even the end of level baddie pre transform "sprite scale effect" are only on PCE & Arcade.
      Explosion clouds more like arcade on pce - wolves more like arcade on pce - power up pods more like arcade on pce - incidental details like boulders only on PCE - all those are missing from MD version. Ok, the background graphics have layers on MD - but Arcade did not have them lol.
      Ok regards the foreground grass and speech missing - but imo the rest looks better on pce . Ateotd it plays same on the PCE and MD.
      PCE version leaves a feeling if like a slightly larger Card would have been used it would have clearly beaten the MD version by a mile ;-)

      So wrong and a 'fanboy' because you disagree... the facts I stated are the reason I think the PCE port is maybe a little better in some ways than the MD and less in others. I'm no fanboy as I own and rate many SFC and MD games highly and many are just as good if not better than the best PCE games, games like Axelay on SFC are awesome. Golden Axe on MD is another awesome title compared to the rubbish PCE CDRom2 port - the PCE hardware has its pro's and cons like any other hardware.

      Y'a pas de rotation sur PC Engine et les zooms c'est pas du vrai zoom mais du pre-rendered, bien foutu pour les bosses par contre pour les mobs y'a aucune tentative de scaling, c'est juste une seule frame volontairement grossie. Et la version Mega Drive a aussi la fumée lors de la transformation des bosses.
      Après la version MD tourne en + haute résolution, en plein écran et a des parallax d'ajoutés, la version PC Engine est larguée dans l'ensemble. Et côté son idem, sur PC Engine y'a même pas de voix et la ziq fait plutôt penser à une NES.
      Et pour finir la PC Engine coûtait déjà aussi cher que ses concurrentes malgré qu'elle offrait moins de possibilités donc si NEC avaient fait une "true 16-bit" et en + avec de la 3D comme tu dis, ça aurait été trop cher et leur console se serait fait encore + distancer que ça n'a déjà été le cas. Regarde la Supergrafx, c'est une PC Engine avec juste quelques améliorations côté GPU et malgré ça elle coûtait nettement + cher qu'une MD ou qu'une SNES.

      Parallax Craze bien sur, mais excuse moi de ma non connaissance du monde vidéos ludiques, mais les rotation, zoom, deformation, tous ceci existe sur nec, mais doit être programmé ( à la main , à l'ancienne) mais la petite est bien capable de faire de petite prouesse , il faut juste voir Star Parodia, qui est une démo technique plus que Shoot, mais bon comme parodius c'est fort sympathique à jouer même si le Challenge n'y est pas , si tu regarde la version de Street fighter 2 sur MD et sur Nec, je suis désolé mais la version Nec doit être sensiblement meilleure, et la petite savait aussi faire dès choses que la Snes avait bien du mal à faire.
      Et si elle était aussi cher, c'est juste à cause d'une chose, l'import, et pardonne moi du peu, mais une Nes coutait très cher à l'époque, une Snes aussi ( ayant acheté une Nes à sa sortie avec Rob, je peut te l'assurer, elle coûtait bien plus que la mini nes sur ebay.....) d'ailleurs si je compare le Prix de la ps2 en mars 2000 en import ( 1800 euro ) et le Prix d'une PC engine ....la PC engine était bien moins cher . D'ailleurs le Prix de N64 import était aussi plus cher qu'une CoreGrafX et son system CD ( voir le même prix je cois 2990FF )
      La Nec est souvent comparée à la Dreamcast, trop en avance sur sont temps, comparé au autres constructeur ( mettre des CD sur une console en fin des années 80 , quelle idée pour une console grand public au Japon ). Enfin si Hudson aurait remplacer Big N, il n'y aurait jamais eut cette engouement pour le JV, pas de motion contrôle à la con, et au moins si il avait ressorti une Mini nec, il aurait fait sa correctement

      @@parallaxcraze958 Graphiquement la version Megadrive est au dessous de la PC Engine. Il suffit d'avoir les 2 consoles, voir mettre 2 émulateurs cote à cote. Oui, effectivement il ont rajouté un parallax qui n'était pas présent dans la version arcade sur la Megadrive, mais chaque fois que tu appuis sur un bouton pour lancer un coup, le jeu ralenti même sans ennemi à l'écran (pas sur PCE). Pour la musique ça se discute aussi. Ensuite tu veux parler de hardware mais encore faudrait que tu saches ce qu'est un adressage. Donc c'est bien beau de comparer un jeu dont la vidéo est redimensionnée , réencodé et donc altérée et peut laisser penser que la version Mégadrive à plein de couleurs, dans la vraie vie il n'en est rien. The PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 is overrated anyway, it's a good system but that's it, it has so many issues/limitations: only one controller port; no light gun support; no online support; no support for a second background layer; etc. and despite all these things it was slightly more expansive than the Mega Drive/Genesis back then while Sega's console has MUCH more to offer!
