Once again, the Master System used background tiles to make the character sprite. What we get is an arcade looking port in stills, but not when the tiles are moving for the character. It still plays decently considering the background limitation though. The NES version controlled unusually twitchy.
We had the NES but when I saw the Master System potential at a friends house I really wondered how the NES could be so popular. If Capcom had made mega man games on it and Konami had decided to bring Castlevania on the Master System I doubt many people would have purchased the NES instead... maybe for mario and Zelda of course...
Os gráficos do NES ficou deplorável e bem simplificado nesta versão, mas foi compensado pela rapidez. Já na versão Master, os gráficos ficou bem melhor, mas os frames rates foram prejudicados deixando o jogo muito lento.

The problem with the NES is the limit of horizontal sprites. The NES can not draw more than 8 sprites horizontally (this is, more than 64 pixels in a line) so, the main character and enemies must be small.

Master System version could have took a page from the NES version and lost some of the impressive sprites in favour of smoother gameplay. NES looks a more fun game. But Mater System is surprisingly satisfying to play.
If it weren't for Nintendo's policy in the 80s, you know the monopoly, the Master System would have been able to have the same titles. More people would have seen how much better the Master System was over the nes.

I can only imagine or believe that the new beast forms and stages from this game could be what Makoto Uchida truly wanted to make for the original arcade game version but could not because of the external and internal limitations that we didn't even know yet.
Master system has the prettier sprites and is slightly more accurate to the arcade but the nes version sounds and looks like less of an eyesore. And runs smoothly as well.

That's okay, but I still loved the "NES" version more than the "Master System" version. The "Master System" version tried hard to emulate the "Arcade" version's graphics at the cost of its frame rates, animation qualities, and one "Bear" stage. The "NES" version simplified the "Arcade" version's graphics and stages so that they could be more compatible with or fit more into the "NES" system while adding new stages and forms, but the game's playability, speed, and animations were still closer to the goodness of the "Arcade" version's playabilility, speed, and animations.

I used to have Altered Beast pirate cart on a famiclone. It was really great,nice music and it has 3 extra stages not found in none of the other versions (which were plenty). Master System has better graphics with big sprites and nice colours,but framerate is bad and makes it almost unplayable today.

I think it's a draw.Both versions have their stuff. For example,the SMS version counts with better graphics the NES/Famicom version,better sound and digitized voices. The NES/Famicom version on the other side,it has better gameplay.

I never thought I say it. Never once in my life. The Master System takes the W by several orders of magnitude. It's accurate to the arcade, it has good sprite scaling, it has better music and sfx, it has better scrolling. NES looks like shit. And it usually doesn't, which makes it all the more disappointing. This was a straight up xeeleestomp.
This is one of those times where less is more. While the Master System version of this game looks better and sounds better, it doesn't play very well at all. It's slow and plodding and the machine struggles to keep rendering the objects that appear. The NES version, while significantly worse looking, is the better playing of these two games, much closer to the arcade or the vastly superior Genesis port. This game really isn't worth playing on either system; if you want this one bad enough get it for the Genesis, that's the only one that both looks and plays well.

Para piorar, a Sega fez um péssimo trabalho de mercado com o Master System: terceirizou a distribuição do Master nos EUA para a Tonka Toys. Já com o Mega Drive, a Sega aprendeu com os erros cometidos com o Master e fez tudo diferente: fez acordos com estúdios famosos e ela mesma distribuiu o Mega Drive nos EUA.
Nes gráficos menos detalhados mas com mecânica mais fluída, master system gráficos melhores porém mecânica menos fluída!!!! a arquitetura gráfica do nes é diferente comparado ao do master system, porém eu consegui jogar mais tempo a versão do nes mesmo tendo menos gráfico.
I liked this channel at some point but it's filled with sega fanboys to the point of insanity. Opinion? The NES version wasn't choppy and was much more playable. The sms version had a horrible framerate and unresponsive controls. Famicom version IMO.

It was Japan only for the NES version. It wasn't imported by Tengen themselves unlike the other 4 Sega games brought to the NES systems.
