    I think many people take the term self care as an excuse to buy stuff. I see that on IG everyday. Time for self care: get new nails, new make up, new clothes, etc. Self care definitely has a hygiene aspect, taking showers regularly, have clean clothes, eat on a regular basis, etc. And also the mental aspect, taking care of your mind and soul. But I don't think that taking care of yourself physically and mentally needs buying so much stuff, it's a trap. I would argue, that if you overconsume things you probably need more focus on selfcare than you might think.

    I use pretty simple skin care. Dove face soap, mineral sunscreen and a retinol night cream. So much is marketing instead of useful ingredients.

      Another vote for Simple + Dove combo. I use sunscreen and.a weekly Salicylic serum (4 euros) and boom. Far better results on acne prone skin than gazillion actives.

      Glad you found a combo that works for you and is affordable. I agree, there are some very great drugstore products out there! 😊

      @shaunaburton7136 what Dove soap do you use? I want to try retinol but it made my skin worst and I’m still healing from the disaster.

      Tret doesn't work for everyone, neither does retinol. I don't use Dove on my face ( I use Simple Micellar Cleanser) - I use Dove Sensitive on my body. @@sunnyxx5174

    Very important messages in this video. It scares me when I see youtubers and vloggers showing their bathroom literally full of thousands of different cosmetic products. It's a terrible amount of toxic ingredients, their money spent on it, as well as and the waste their packages create. Completely unnecessary and harmful investments. I literally own like 15 cosmetic products including makeup and it's completely enough for life.

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      So true! The waste - not only the packaging but also the ingredients. Many influencers get them for free though and can't really keep up with getting rid of them (gifting them in give aways or to friends and family). It's still such a waste..

    Well said! If something works for us, it’s absolutely fine to stick to it! This means we will buy less and finish up the products.😊

    The most important thing is sunscreen, that’s what prevents cancer! And it also helps with many other things people want for their skin. Sunscreen, something to wash it off with, and a hat is all the average person needs! And maybe a plain moisturiser for night. People who have specific skin concerns need the appropriate help, not a more elaborate routine. For example I have hormonal acne. While there are one or two products that calm it down, at the end of the day I don’t even need skincare, I actually need a Drs appointment because it’s not the only sign of hormone problems I have. Loved this video! It’s wild how advertising can make us think we’re doing something good for ourselves but we’re often just over-spending and cluttering our bathrooms with products we can’t even use before expiry

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching and sharing! I don't have sensitive skin but I heard it over and over again, that if the skin reacts to anything, less is more. And cutting down on products will help your skin. You seem to be a living example of that 😊

    I practice in the spa/wellness industry and the amount of people that fall for marketing tactics is crazy. A lot of fluff words that will otherwise be damaging to your skin since most consumers don’t know how to accurately minimize their skin conditions or even take the time to read how/when to use certain products.
    Another good point- most of the time, any skin influencer advertising a product already had amazing skin prior to product use. It’s dangerous to consumers.

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting! I feel like now with all the "special" products like AHA/BHA or other chemical peelings raise the need to be more informed when applying the product. And, absolutely, I notice how I want to believe I get the same skin as the influencer if I just use the same routine. But most of the time, their skin has been perfect to start with!

    I love this video. We've started treating "the essentials" like luxuries in my family. We all were chatting and asking one another at one point these various makeup products became must haves and why there were all from such expensive brands. We're attempting to practice not replacing items until they're done so that we still get to feel like picking out a new one is a special experience.

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love that. I do the same thing! I try to wait until something is completely used up and then I intentionally buy something new. I slow down a little for that and it helps me feel like this is a big thing and it makes me happy and feel excited about the new product. Instead of buying so much stuff here and there but forgetting after a couple of minutes that we have just gotten something new.

    I am in my 69's and I have never used a serum or expensive moisturizer in my life. I use only petroleum jelly and sometimes baby oil. Everyone compliments me on my young looking skin and say I look at least 10 years younger than I am. I think people are just bored and need to spend their money somehow. Love your videos.

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. You are the living example that less can definitely be more! We don't always need the 10 step beauty routine, 20 different serums, and so on. Me personally, I do enjoy having a few products that make me feel fancy and like I am taking care of my skin. I see results, it works great for me, but who knows, maybe baby oild and petroleum jelly would have the same effect for me 😂

    I love that you’re focusing on skincare. With the rise of popularity in Korean skincare I’ve never bought so many products in my life. I started watching your channel and some others that focus on overcumsumption just to understand the damage I’m doing and to basically pound it into my head to stop buying crap.

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally get that, I've also bought some Korean skincare to try it out. What can I say, I do like it. However, I'm trying to be very intentional and only replaced other empties of my skincare routine with it. Maybe set up a wishlist and whenever you empty something you can try out a new item of that wishlist? 😊

    I think a major problem for me in the past was that I didn’t have a good product base that I knew it worked. The moment I found the very few creams that finally worked ( they are simple but effective), I stopped looking at the cutely packaged, overhyped cosmetics that promised me crazy results… they just would overflow in my cabinet without being ever touched so eventually I stopped buying them. I sometimes get gifted by brands and… straight up just give the stuff away to friends and family because I know I won’t use it 😅 so I think that many may overbuy the products because they feel lost and that they don’t have the products they trust. Your video really spoke to me ❤ good intake!

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your comment and feedback! I agree with you. Getting all the fancy products sometimes isn't the best for our skin. My favorite night cream is from a very small, but old, and often overlooked brand here in Germany. It's super cheap but works super well for my skin. 😊

    • @CocoB22
      @CocoB22 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was me exactly. I found what worked and I use it. I needed the help of an expert facialist to make some suggestions and then some more tweaks along the way - but I have it down now.

    I want to comment on “self-care”. It is an extremely important concept. But it does not require expensive products to accomplish it.
    Self care is taking time both morning and before retiring for the evening to care for one’s self. A shower, brushed hair, makeup and perfume, dressed in clean appropriate clothing. At night it is the reverse. It really shouldn’t take more than than 30 minutes ever. It does wonders for you .

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! I might do a video on this. Self care doesn't always need to involve spending money..

  • @maddie8415
    @maddie8415 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for calling out the misuse of the term "self-care" to sell people (often women) things they don't need and weren't even previously thinking of buying! I know people who actually take this sentiment seriously (and even embrace the term "retail therapy" as a positive). I know I've been guilty of over consumption at times as well, but it's only made me feel guilty, not like I was totally justified in it. Before advertisers latched onto the term "self-care" it had a very different and important meaning...ruining your budget after seeing an enticing ad is the opposite of self-care.

    Yes 100% agree this needs to be shared over and over . Sad world but doesn’t have to be . Choose your own path ,be your own boss…. Willpower and shut off social media . Keep your life simple and only buy what you need. Stop watching others . Comparison is the devil in this world. At 41 now man I’ve learned so much thx god I love it . Only we have the power to change and not be a part of the consumer driven debt based world . Be happy and free 🎉

    Thank you. You opened my mind by this video. I have been follow people on social media to buy shit (clothes, skincare, bag etc) every month to looks good and accepted. Im trying to stop little by little. I felt guilty everytime i open my dresses and my makeup table. I have alot of stuff i never use or wear. Thank you.

    interesting video! I agree with what you say and I have been trying to be better/want less/use less for several years and I challenge myself to do no-buy months (clothing, beauty, everything), use up everything I already have etc, but then the next month I just buy loads after "having been so good for a month or two" and it is a never ending cercle... Better than buying all the time but still not quite how I want to operate. It's a work in progress I suppose.
    I see you channel is quite new! And from a new youtuber (about Korea, totally different topic) to another I just wanted to say Good luck! ;)

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I totally get you. In the past I've also had the "buying a lot again" phase after doing a no buy. This year I'm doing a low buy on clothes and decor (I have a video on that too) and I have set a certain number of exceptions. So far I notice that it is so much easier to stay strong for a long period and since I have the number in my head, I am very intentional with my purchases. Maybe you could try that? 😊 As you've said, it's definitely a process and I wish you all the best on your journey to becoming more intentional with your purchases!
      Aww and thank you! Good luck for your channel as well 🥰

    My sister hoards make up, hard care products, etc. She has boxes and boxes of stuff all over her house.
    Me on the other hand wear minimal amounts of make up and use just a few skin products.
    I get so frustrated with the waste we create it'd shameful.
