Two younger ones couldn’t even fathom the significance of LKY sprinkle flowers on two Indonesian marines graves? It’s actually rather simple. There’s a confrontation with Indonesian trying to cause troubles in Sg, and these marines were then hanged. In other words, these are direct enemies. For LKY to take a bold step to reconcile with Indonesia (an enemy in the eye) showed how far LKY willing to go, just to bring peace and stability here, IS definitely very VERY significant! Otherwise, there’ll be nonstop troubles in this region! Hope any younger viewers understand such great sacrifices LKY and his old guards did!
Similarly, the story of LKW being slapped by a Japanese soldier, and then engaging Japanese MNCs without a grudge is a case in point. LKY also had oversights like the failure of the Graduate Mother initiative despite it being well-intended at that point in time. Learning from oversights is always valuable for everyone, especially for people in positions of influence. And that takes courage coupled with an open minded learning stance. "You have what you can learn if you accept your error" - Jordan Peterson. Quoting and re-telling of successes, only, in hindsight is tantamount to 'praying' to a past hero who does not existing now. Relying on a past icon is somewhat reminiscing to the point of irrelevance to the challenges faced now. Because our children have difficulty comprehending that experience as they did not live back then. And its not their fault to be born later. Retired leaders ought to, stay existential or tell their stories with what is relevant for current generations. What do you think people living right now can do for the future? What are your assumptions and are you aware of your own cognitive bias?
Foreigner and Singaporean remarks because Singapore is small and lucky geographically to be at the crossroad for east to west and easy to rule for the country. Very few like to point out Singapore have practically no resources, even the most important commodity like water we need it from our neighbour. Without the wise leaders since independence can we honestly what Singapore is now and we really pay gratitude to them
If size of country and population are key, why then are countries in Asean (besides Singapore) unable to match the likes of South Korea, Japan and Taiwan?
@@KG-rd5rh The answer is Confucian culture. Only TSMC and to a lesser extend Samsung can fabricate cutting edge chips. Singapore had benefited from the racial and political tensions in this region.
@@KG-rd5rh There are benefits for being vassal states of the US, undeniably. They will sink with the ship eventually. But I agree with you in regards to size.
Yes, you're right. We thrived during LKY's time, but now many young people feel that life is becoming increasingly difficult. The government seems to be running out of ideas to boost the economy and improve people's lives. They see no hope for the future, as the cost of living spirals out of control while salaries remain stagnant.
But can a tiny or third world nation really shine on a global stage . It’s hard when mainstream media prioritises western content and therefore no wiggle room for any other nation to take the forefront. We will never get sober from our colonial hangover .
The founders of Microsoft and Google are both Americans, and although the current CEOs are both of Indian descent, they have received their education in the United States starting from their master's degrees.
From a product and service perspective, there is nothing asia produces for the west but the west produces more for the world. West is about the individual whereas east is about the collective
I think Dr Kishore do not have to worry about Singaporeans and Asia. Singaporeans are the knowledgeable lot. They know what to do next and they are very resilient. I think Dr Kishore has to let the younger generations do their own growing up.
Mr. Mahbubani is a very wise and experienced man who has worked alongside the 3 Singaporean founding fathers. In my book, he has earned the right to offer helpful advice to the young Singaporeans. I also believe he cares a great deal about the future of Singapore & Singaporeans. In any case- it doesn’t hurt anyone to hear a free advice, Right?

Tough time creates strong men. Strong men create good time. Good time produces weak men. Weak men create tough times. It is the nature of things. Singapore is not immune to the nature of thing.
Indians tend to do better than Chinese in the USA partly because American culture values assertiveness and speaking up, which aligns more closely with how Indians often communicate. Additionally, English is widely spoken in India from childhood, giving Indians a linguistic advantage in the U.S. There’s also an underlying anti-Chinese sentiment in the U.S., which can influence preferences for Indians in leadership roles. However, Indians might not be as organized as Chinese because they are generally more individualistic.
Singapore has 4 veterans from MFA - Kishore, Tommy Koh, Bilahari Kausikan and George Yeo. And their foreign affairs roles and experiences are not quite the same. They even gave contradictory views in public as well, which offer ordinary Singaporeans multiple perspectives. Would be great if they can all 4 be on a panel discussing a common topic crucial to Singapore.
I came to learn more about what Mahbubani thinks, but I had to listen to the interviewer compare the great world change in the last 30 years with the iPhone brand...
Understand Kishore's point that the West have not produced good leaders to lead the world. However, if we look at Asia, there aren't many visionaries either. Who are these Asian leaders that Kishore is talking about? I don't think any politician can be trusted.
The thing about Indian geniuses are that many of them excel for other countries, and not many come back to build India. This makes a difference between India & China.
Good that YLB brought up the 2017 article where Mahbubani was criticized by Bilahari Kausikan and Shanmugam. From then on he was forever known as Mendacious Mahbubani.
I agree with you Professor that ASEAN is exciting and very importantly, it is my home like it is yours. So I am very vested in ASEAN. I am thankful that even if it is the Balkans of the east in terms of diversity but has had no recent wars as you pointed out. This peace here is something to treasure. So....aside from giving advice to the West in the hope that they change their ways....please also advise China to follow international law and stop China's illegal actions and claims within the 9 dash line in the South China Sea (to avoid a war taking place in the sea that sits in the middle of ASEAN countries). After all, it is actually your view, though not often articulated, that those claims of China are illegal, as we learnt in your interview with Inconvenient Questions titled "An Undiplomatic Conversation with Kishore Mahbubani" th-cam.com/video/e5wWTYbTHu0/w-d-xo.html Thank you.

The biggest danger to sg is too much democracy, and the western narrative that democracy equals freedoms, that all a country needs is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to vote, freedom this, freedom that, as if one person’s freedom has no impact another’s freedoms. That freedom of speech, for instance, has no consequences, so one has the right to say anything especially in critizing the government. @@MYSG-nc6wp Well well now we know why you are saying these things, you don’t like that indians compare their country to china but the video was talking about the Indian diaspora not indians living in india. Sure maybe I might be not a expert in Indian accent still it doesn’t make them eloquent speakers of English as you said many of them are not praised for their English speaking skills
@@muj970 Sigh, Indian fiaspora. Yhere are many of them that have settled in Malaysia and Singapore. They speak excellent English, without yhe so called heavy accent. Your stereotype probably comes from your experience with call centers in India, these are not diasporas.
Without the wise leaders since independence can we honestly what Singapore is now and we really pay gratitude to them
Size doesn't matter. Look at India and China progression. China is 3X India. Who is more successful? Like you say leadership matter more
If size of country and population are key, why then are countries in Asean (besides Singapore) unable to match the likes of South Korea, Japan and Taiwan?
@@KG-rd5rh
The answer is Confucian culture.
More especially since nowadays Western contents are mainly propaganda.
Everything is impermanent. The only thing that’s permanent is impermanence ❤
I am not so optimistic. Look at Europe and America and observe their experience and trajectory. We are an exception, and it needs hard work to keep it that way.
This episode is just simply brilliant and insightful!! Mr Mahbubani always has a wealth of wisdom to share and I hope your younger audience will tune in. Good job guys and thanks very much for inviting him on!

Tough time creates strong men. Strong men create good time. Good time produces weak men. Weak men create tough times. It is the nature of things. Singapore is not immune to the nature of thing.
Please get George Yeo on board 😊

Like Kishore so much from Afghanistan, Singapore people should proud on him.
Please do not forget Chan Heng Chee too.
I feel that one good candidate for your 60 plus series is Dr. Shahzad Naseem, the Chairman of Meinhardt Group of Singapore.

I came to learn more about what Mahbubani thinks, but I had to listen to the interviewer compare the great world change in the last 30 years with the iPhone brand...
Hope that MOE make this podcast available to all their Principals, teachers n students to listen n learn from a great geopolitical analyst.
Agreed
The best YLB Podcast so far. Thanks.
Understand Kishore's point that the West have not produced good leaders to lead the world. However, if we look at Asia, there aren't many visionaries either. Who are these Asian leaders that Kishore is talking about? I don't think any politician can be trusted.
Another heavy weight! ❤
Always great listening to the learned and wise Prof Mabubani. Has or Mr. George Yeo on the list ?

I agree with you Professor that ASEAN is exciting and very importantly, it is my home like it is yours. So I am very vested in ASEAN. I am thankful that even if it is the Balkans of the east in terms of diversity but has had no recent wars as you pointed out. This peace here is something to treasure.
So....aside from giving advice to the West in the hope that they change their ways....please also advise China to follow international law and stop China's illegal actions and claims within the 9 dash line in the South China Sea (to avoid a war taking place in the sea that sits in the middle of ASEAN countries). After all, it is actually your view, though not often articulated, that those claims of China are illegal, as we learnt in your interview with Inconvenient Questions titled "An Undiplomatic Conversation with Kishore Mahbubani"

Kishore does not consider Myanmar as a part of ASEAN? We still have a brutal civil war going on when he says the ASEAN region is very peaceful now. I wish he gives his thought on Myanmar as well when he talks about ASEAN.
Tommy Koh
Why doesn't he say that China routinely blocks India from a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. He was a representative to the UN. What a blind spot or is it denial?

The biggest danger to sg is too much democracy, and the western narrative that democracy equals freedoms, that all a country needs is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to vote, freedom this, freedom that, as if one person’s freedom has no impact another’s freedoms. That freedom of speech, for instance, has no consequences, so one has the right to say anything especially in critizing the government. So, many believe that sg is not democratic enough, and they think life in sg is too restrictive.
