I will NEVER forget how completely stunned and floored I was when Vader told Luke he was his father. I was in a little country movie theater with only 1 screen with every kid I knew were there watching it... was the greatest cinematic moment I have ever experienced. I've had the blessing of seeing every single Star Wars movie that has been released on the big screen, in person, on release day. Keep up the great work!
That's amazing, I wasn't even a gamet in my father's eyes for a long time I got to see 7 and 9 in theaters that was really fun I watched the prequels at home but remember renting episode III when it came out from blockbuster with my dad :)
Watching those 2 kids react to the "I am your father" scene was so damn wholesome but unfortunately for me I also knew about Vader being his father before watching the movies as it was a popular pop culture reference so i never got the same shocked feeling as them and I really wish I did.
Peter Parker absolutely knows the name of his Star Wars references, but he's clever enough to realize that the Avengers likely don't. He'd just waste time if he had to explain what AT-AT and Hoth were.
I always felt that Luke's failure in the cave was giving in to his feelings, and the Dark Side, striking out of fear and anger, echoed by Yoda's warnings about the Path to the Dark Side.
Drives me crazy when people comment on Peter calling it the 'snow planet' and the 'walking thingys' apparently assuming this means HE doesn't know the real names. I've always just thought he was using that language because he's unsure that the adults will know the real terms/names and so in the moment just wants to be certain they get what he's trying to explain.
I thought the exact same. I definitely keep in mind the audience I am speaking to when I am explaining things. I know my friends would be lost if I said Hoth and AT-AT, even if they've seen it. Not everyone is as into these movies as we apparently are
That's decent logic I suppose. But it's kind of odd to assume that it's possible for a young kid like him to be familiar with the movie but the adults who probably grew up watching it wouldn't? More sense that he said it that way just to keep his idea simple so people didn't have to go, um, what?
Favorite part about Luke & Vader's duel is something I only noticed 20 years after my first time watching it: Vader is mostly toying with and testing Luke's abilities--but near the end, Luke is able to hit Vader in the shoulder. Vader winces, gets really annoyed (probably thinking "you little sh*t! now you're gonna get it!"), and really starts to unload on his son. For some reason, it reminds me of a parent trying to give a troublesome toddler a bath. LOL
The scene he describes when we see the might of the Imperial Fleet and Darth Vader in command with Imperial March playing was (when I saw it as a teen) the most terrifying (and coolest) thing I'd ever seen!
I am so, so glad I am old enough that I got to see these movies in order, and my mind was completely blown! And the darker theme, left me speechless. Return of the Jedi, as a kid was my favorite of the trilogy. But now, as an adult... oh yeah, The Empire Strikes Back is my absolute favorite of the originals, absofreakinglutely.
I spent a ridiculous amount of energy trying to keep my 4 kids from knowing Vader was Luke’s father only for my 9yr old to find out from a friend at school and tell his siblings later that day. Broke my heart when I found out. There are only so many firsts a father gets to impart on his kids, introducing them to queen and nirvana, the beetles, fight club, Tarantino, Star Wars and Star Trek, quantum leap, cheers and Seinfeld… I lost a bit that day.
I've got a good detail I think you guys missed. Like you mentioned, Vader kills every one of his lieutenants that fails him. Captain Needa, the first Admiral, etc. Well when Admiral Piett loses the Falcon at the end of the film, Vader is too distraught, emotional, or whatever you feel like he is to care about anything else. Piett seems to expect to be killed, but Vader just passes by him. It's something I never caught until pointed out to me, and I really like it. On an unrelated note, the symphony in my city recently did a screening of Empire with a live orchestral score, and WOW. This particular film has one of the greatest film scores in all of cinema. Hearing it live really put that in perspective for me.
Prolly not since Lightsabers can be ignited and deactivated by the force and by a physical switch so Luke’s freezing might’ve made the lightsaber deactivate.
I love empire strikes back! I remember being a kid, it was winter break as a kid and just jaw on the floor when I found out about Vader’s true origin. It made me fully enthralled as a Star Wars geek and I wanted to consume more and more of its lore
I was born in 1978.... Saw RotJ in theaters at 3.5 yrs old before the other films of the trilogy. So.... Never was shocked at the reveal. Tried to keep the reveal from my kids but they never really wanted to watch Star wars and one day I guess my son at school was told Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father and the best I got to do was when he asked if Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father I answered "his father, he is"
21:31 When I saw this for the first time, I already knew the reveal because in Vader's entry scene, I asked them, "Who's that?" "Luke's dad." "Who's Luke?" "You'll see him in a little bit." It's great to see what kids' reactions are to the unspoiled version.
Luke was going to say "Hey, you never paid me back that $5 you owed me" but he didn't feel it was the appropriate time. Luke never got his $5 back, but you can see in The Force Awakens Han's realization in remembering he owed him after Kylo's lightsaber penetrated his body. Han tried to tell Kylo to give the $5 to Luke, but Han feel to his death reaching for his wallet. Sad
