FSR 2.1 vs Intel XeSS | What should AMD Owners use in Cyberpunk?

  • Today, we're taking a look at the two upscaling technologies currently available in Cyberpunk 2077 for AMD users, or anyone else who doesn't have access to DLSS.
    Which one should be used while we wait for FSR 3? Is the choice in the matter clear?

    XeSS looks so much better than FSR 2.1, but I realised that the frame pacing is really bad when using XeSS comapred to FSR 2.1. I always prefer native resolution... I can't stand upscaling and what it does to image quality and that's why I really miss DLSS, which was a much better solution (R.I.P. RTX 4070 😏).
    The other dilemma is, in native resolution ray-tracing is not really usable on AMD hardware without upscaling... and the RT effects in CP2077 are outstanding.

    That first zoomed in comparison was ridiculous. What did you think you will see when zooming in to pixel level? A proper comparison would be a side by side with a slight zoom into a distant area to see the detail.

      The goal was to demonstrate any image artifacting that may have been occurring with each upscaling tech, as those become more apparent the more you zoom in on a single frame.
      Thank you, I appreciate the feedback.

    (I game on a 65" 4k LG from my bed, so differences are mad noticeable)
    I've been using xess ultra quality, RT shadows and reflections and rt lighting medium at 3200x1800 on my rx7800xt and xess leaves fsr for dead. Obv more of a performance hit but its so much cleaner, tweak the sharpness setting and zero shimmer.

      I'm on an RX 6800XT, a gen 4 NVME and 32GB of DDR4 3600 Mhz CL18 Overclocked to 4000 mhz (and stable, I purchased the Team group overclocking 2x16GB 3600 Mhz (I'll leave the name down below if anyone wan'ts a great budget DDR4 kit. it's CL18 but ppl are overclocking it to 4200+ mhz and being stable so it's still a fast kit) and with an overclock (just the auto overclock from the driver) and intel's XESS I'm getting 85+ FPS and it is AWESOME. Before I overclocked turned it on I was playing in native but without Ray tracing and getting higher framerates (110+ FPS) but this game really pops when using Ray tracing. FSR looks AWFUL and that's the only thing I wish I wiould have realized before getting this gpu, but now that intel's upscaling tech is becoming widely adopted it doesn't even matter! I knew FSR was better but I never knew about that specific "FSR look" that I just can't rock with. Thankfully this and spiderman are the only two games I need to even bother with upscaling on.
      Also, Idk if you or anyone else is aware, but why does FSR look AMAZING on the nintendo switch emulators Yuzu and Ryujinx and why doesn't it have that "FSR look" I'm talking about? It just makes Yuzu look better.
      TEAMGROUP T-Create Expert overclocking 10L DDR4 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) 3600MHz (PC4 28800) CL18 Desktop Memory Module Ram - My ram kit. Just search it on amazon. Great kit for the price, and it's teamgroup so it's name brand.

      @christianmino3753 gotta say fsr3 is the business though, been using it in Avatar (without frame gen) and it's pretty much perfect for me.

      Why bother? Answer is simple: it's as good or better than the DLSS, so it blows FSR out of the water

    which upscaling solution has more shimmering on reflection and ghosting in general?

    • @JarboeGaming
      @JarboeGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      FSR for sure.
      Personally, during gameplay though, I don't notice it. I do notice the pretty significant bump in frames though. Ultimately it's up to the end-user to make the choice, but personally I'm still using FSR 2.1 until 3 becomes available.

      @AudioPhile 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I don't get any shimmer with XESS, had to play around with the sharpening setting though, too low and was shimmering just like fsr.
      Edit
      Actually I never increased the sharpness on fsr as I thought before playing around with XESS it would make the shimmer worse. 1800p XESS on ultra at .65 looks like native for me. Hugely impressed with the image quality considering the substantial performance gain.

    Why is XeSS also not being run on quality preset? Seems like that does not make the comparison equal

    • @JarboeGaming
      @JarboeGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I ran both on the highest quality presets available in game for the respective upscaling techs, and to be fair, to me it seems that the overall image quality between the two (ultra quality to quality) lines up pretty fairly. I can't see a significant difference between either one.

    • @sethlin01
      @sethlin01 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JarboeGaming I totally understand and appreciate you showcasing the best each tech has to offer, and the amount of time this must have took.
      The issue is that they are not comparing the same upscaling ratio. Quality from both upscales at a 1.5 ratio. What this means is that ultra quality at 1.3 is already closer to native resolution and should produce higher quality but lower frames regardless of tech. This makes it so we are not able to see the difference of technologies at equal settings. Then one may look better or have better fps at equal upscaling, which is why we would choose XeSS or FSR over the other

    This moment when XeSS 1.0 or 1.1 is better than AMD FSR 2.2.
    I also love using XeSS in Ghostwire Tokyo. I'm wondering if AMD could finally get the crown on their FSR 3 + Frame generation. Sadly there are still only like 2 games that use FSR 3 (even tho version 3 is released many months now). Forspoken for example.

    Interestimg - what GPU where you using? I'm on an RX 6700 XT with an UWQHD screen (3440x1440). I'm using optimised settings (used HUB guide to tweak, so I'm on mostly high with a few medium settings) can usually get 50-60fps native. XeSS Ultra Quality stays about the same, XeSS Quality will boost about 10-20FPS, XeSS balanced nets me 15-20. FSR 2.1 I gets 40-50FPS more. XeSS nets the least image quality glitches (none that I notice anyways), XeSS Quality and FSR Quality seem about the same (tiny problems in different ares, not enough to bother me and seem to be about the same), XeSS balanced is yuck (didn't bother trying balanced or performance modes of FSR although I did try "auto" and the image quality ranged from good to out right horrible (most consistant fps wise though), and didn't bother trying performace mode of XeSS). Despite every video I've seen saying to use XeSS on my Radeon card, I'm sticking to FSR.
