    I go through some of Vittorio Storaro's cinematography techniques to help you understand his unique style.
    Just to be clear: Vittorio Storaro changed his style to suit the movies he shot. The goal of this video and article is to drum up enthusiasm and a yearning to learn more.
    Think of it as a tribute, nothing more is intended.

    These videos are tremendous.
    I'd love to see one of these on the often underrated John Toll. He did marvelous work on The Last Samurai, The Thin Red Line, and Braveheart. There is a poetic naturalism to his work that I admire hugely.

    One thing I am surprised you did not mention. Storaro has suggested a standardized film format that he calls Univisium. It uses a 2.00:1 aspect ratio shot 3 perf on 35mm film.
    It uses much more of the physical film strip than the usual method, saving money on film, and because the film frame goes right to the perforations in the film strip, it creates that glorious wide aspect ratio without the need for anamorphic lenses.
    Since he proposed this format, many of his films have been shot in Univisium.

    Great video as always! However, wouldn't it be possible to find some higher quality versions of the source material? I mean a lot of the films "The Conformist", "Apocalypse Now" and "The Last Emperor" really shine on Blu-ray and I find it really a pity, that most of the film footage you use looks as if it was taken from a VHS-source... No critique just an observation.
    I just find it a little bit of a bummer to be honest, since it's all about the cinematography and therefore image quality does matter.

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Independent Frames The effort to rip DVD or Blu-ray content isn't worth the effort.

    • @IndieFrames
      @IndieFrames 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wolfcrow well i for myself think it would definitely be worth the effort. and also you can find high def rips online really easily... that's what all the other film-essayists do too.

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Independent Frames I'm not going to pirate, if that's what you mean. The clips are all from TH-cam, as explained in the description. I do accept that full HD clips would be better, though.

    • @IndieFrames
      @IndieFrames 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wolfcrow I see your point. However i don't think it makes a difference that they're from youtube. copyright is copyright no matter the source

    • @wolfcrow
      @wolfcrow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Independent Frames No, as per TH-cam's terms of use, you can use clips for educational and analysis. Many channels operate this way. I can rip Blu-ray content for this, just that I don't want to waste my time and money doing it.
      Piracy, on the other hand, is not something I want to get myself into. Just my opinion, of course.
