@@Photo0021 I had a GX7 and took great photos. When I had unrepairable problems with the sensor I bought a refurbished GX9 from Panasonic. a while back I was searching for a second GX9 body and found that in Japan It’s sold as the GX7 mark iii, with the GX85 as the GX7 mark ii. Thus, just incremental changes.
I bought this same camera used (but essentially in new condition) with the additional 45-150mm lens from B&H back in August of 2020 for $382 US. Camera prices these days are insane.
@@hidoisensei I paid almost the same for a kit with 12-32 around the same price. Maybe it was bad timing of Panasonic to cancel all of their compact RF style offerings and focus on behemoth flagships.
The GX9 will go down as a classic. It’s incredibly well featured, takes beautiful images and can use a TON of different native MFT and adapted lenses. I love mine.
I hope Panasonic releases an updated one of these with phase detect AF. Also I think 20MP is more than enough. I've seen incredible stills from the A7SIII, and that only has 12MP.
Oh yeah the GX9 is a beast, I went for the GX85 (previous model) and have that same exact 20mm F1.7 mkII and I still use it along side my A7IV, S5II, GH6 and rest of my cameras, it’s a beast and hidden gem if you might say, I sold it once around 2 years ago and bought another one like 5months later because I missed it so much, best $300 I’ve spent on camera gear.
I bought that exact combination from MPB just the other week, for about €810. It’s not the cheapest combination but I feel it will keep me happy for years to come. My main goal was to find a portable, reasonably priced, feature rich camera with good quality images and I think it definitely ticks all those boxes.
Owning both GX9 and X-T30 II and to me the GX9 doesn't lag behind in most of my use cases. It even beats the Fuji in several circumstances, such as when I actually need more DoF while no need to slow down on aperture (taking shots of small stuffs in a tight-spaced exhibition for example). Lumix's red and blue do look really poppy when paired with Leica M43 lenses and I really like how the images come out. Monochrome is great too. For downsides, autofocus system is aged, misses quite often. EVF is rather bad in bright light conditions. For now I'm more into Fuji's film sim so I'm gonna part way with the GX9. Really hope that Panasonic makes a successor to this great camera.
Panasonic/OM have an opportunity to make an X100/GRIII killer with M43 imo. They just need to redesign the GX9 and Pen cameras.. idk why they’re sleeping on it
Isn't that effectively the Leica D-Lux 8? Sadly Panasonic does not look like they are releasing a Lumix version of it like they had in the past (as the LX100 line).
The m43 is mostly a prosummer/enthusiast segment, there's less professionals in it, hence, less big bucks. They've been trying to enter the fullframe market for a while for the same reason, and the S9 was an effort to combine both worlds. The third-party lens market is booming atm, so camera bodies are I hope to get their head back to their market and spun out a nice GX10.
I have a GX80, pretty much similar to GX9, the 16mp sensor being the only big difference. The prices of both used GX9 and the GX80 are going up in the last year since the Fuji-rangefinder-mania. I got mine for 300eur with 12-32, now the body only is selling for 400eur... I found the 20mm 1.7 for less than half of today's prices... Regarding specs the GX80 vs GX9 there are no big differences, and the 2x used price for GX9 is hard to justify just for 16 vs 20mpx sensor difference. The GX80 is a great budged every day carry camera paired with a 12-32 kit lens (surprisingly sharp) and a 20mm 1.7 for night time. That 20mm is crazy sharp lens...don't mind the slower focusing... A little bit of playing with picture styles can give you nice SOOC jpegs in colour and especially B&W (L.monochrome+orange filter), not like the Fuji, but still really great. Anyone with a tight budget considering an EDC street camera should put the GX80/85 in the top 3 choices...
Fellow GX85/GX80 user, it's crazy that this camera has gone up in value. I wish Panasonic was watching that market, an updated GX camera would be an immediate buy for me.
I print my 16Mpx photos in 40x50cm format without an issue. In fact, a 75” 4k tv is only a bit above 8Mpx and is still sharp. The megapixel debate was never a debate - it’s marketing.
I’ve been using this for several years with the Leica 15mm lens for several years and it has a lot going for it. I would quite like an update with a newer sensor and PDAF. A better resolution sensor and screen wouldn’t go amiss. But it’s a good setup, feels really premium.
I’ve been trying to get one on the used market in Australia without luck. I think what happened was when Olympus sold the camera division to omd no one bought them new until it got insanely discounted. So people who did get them cheap are not letting them go, especially now you can’t get a m43 rangefinder style body anymore.
Thank you Tom, I really enjoy your videos about alternative deals. As far as the LUTS craze goes, I find my hands full getting my camera set up right, composition, and focussing. I have all the time in the world for post-processing, so yeah, nah...nuts to LUTS
Great review. I am pretty sure I saw a review that was explaining that while the new x100 does have a 40mp sensor, the lens isn't able to keep up with it. I think interchangeable lenses is a huge advantage for any camera over a fixed lens body. Users can start experimenting with vintage lenses that give them the unique looks they want without the need for artificial film simulators. Although, I also think an Adobe subscription with access to Light Room is a must. Where they can create extremely unique pre-sets for their pictures. With only 20 film filters on the x100, how unique will your shots actually look?
I bought a brand new one with the 12-32 mm "classic" lense for 556 euros just 2 years ago ! Prices became crazy !!! This "against" video is a little hard, i guess the Fuji and the gx9 don't play in the same division.... But the gx9 still take good pictures in 2024. It's a light weight and small camera. You can put it in your pocket, it's great for streephotography.
Yep, long term E-M1 II user here, I bought an E-PL10 a month ago and can't believe it! It's not quite as quick as the EM1 but it outperforms my E-M5 II, a little gem.
@@alex-reay I ordered the original E-M1. I then bought the E-M5ii which proved to be superior. The E-PL 10 Pen was bought from Japan recently and it is also impressive.
I use the GX9 and love it, not perfect (autofocus I'm looking at your) but the size, like and feel in the hand are great, plus I really like the rangefinder style setup.
yeah that was my problem with it. That and the EVF drove me nuts, i could never get it adjust enough so I could see the entire image clearly. There were so many shots that I also missed because of the AF. I ended up trading it in for a 2nd hand G9 though :)
Had the GX9+20mm 1.7 combo which is wonderful, nice to see it getting attention. The Lumix is indeed more "practical" than the Fuji, but it has less of that high-end retro bonanza. Speaking of lens options, the Lumix 14-140 mark II is a gem of a compact superzoom for the GX9. 😁
I have this, the Panasonic G100 and the Canon M6m2…The g100 with a Leica Lens is hands down the winner. Super small, super compact, super light, super quality, you can’t go wrong. The other options were heavier and this GX9 doesn’t have a mic port. All of them are great but that G100 knocked it out of the park.
Tom I just sold my lx100 ii which is one of my fave alternatives. My x100 vs my lx100 ii was just as fun. the next thing you should definitely buy is the lx100 ii as its pretty much a gx9 but with 17mp and an AMAZING f1.7-2.8 zoom lens. I only sold it due to my needing money for other things and I already am regretting it!!!
Oh no, you sold a perfectly capable Leica D-Lux 8, haha. I bought a LX100 ii a few weeks ago and am very much enjoying it so far. Hope you can get your hands on another one. They are quit nice indeed
Compared to the Fuji X 100 V the GX9 was a clear winner, and was already much older. Now the VI has made major improvements (IBIS,…) and should be the clear better camera in terms of specs. But you‘re right it‘s actually not that much better looking on real world use cases. I bought the GX9 more than 2 years ago, used for less than 500€. And it is still my everyday cam beside the G9ii. Especially together with the Panaleica 15mm 1.7 this is a great camera. Being a pretty tall guy the tilting EVF is a huge benefit as I can easily make pictures in Rolleiflex style. Love it! Even though the Fuji X 100 VI is also pretty compelling to me. I‘ll wait for the GX9 successor from Panasonic. The S9 is clearly not the answer.
I’m not optimistic that lumix will create aa new GX series body. It appears lumix has abandoned the photography centric customer. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I'm taking very good care of my 6-year-old GX9, I'm still waiting for Pany to release its successor. Buying the camera is the best decision I've ever made.
I’m looking for a 2nd GX9 at a good price. Good luck to me. Lumix may come out with a LX100iii as Leica announced the D-Lux8. Lumix doesn’t seem interested in manufacturing a photography centric small body camera. I’d love to see the G9ii sensor in a S9 body. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@martingreenberg870 Yeah that's the one thing I wish it had. You can always use an external audio recorder though. If it had audio jack and a second sd card slot it would be practically perfect.
I would prefer the predecessor, the GX8 is slightly heavier, but it's weather sealed and has a microphone jack as well as a fully articulated screen... most of the other features are the same.
I own the GX8. A good camera. I primarily do photography so I much prefer the tilt screen. I appreciate the audio jac. It would be nice to have a standard 3.5mm jac. What is the story with the IBIS not working when doing video? Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
nice video, but, they are different cameras for different customers Leaf shutter (and the benefits when working with flash) on the Fuji and built in ND filter are things that any MILC just can't do Panasonic colours just can't compete with Fuji film simulations out of the camera (granted subjective) But really if you want a small pocketable camera this camera or the Fuji X-e series is a good option
On the subject of film simulations, although it's not as simple as selecting something from a list, you can adjust the contrast, saturation, noise reduction and colors within the different styles to fine tune things to get extremely close to different film choices.
This camera is amazing i love it. I used it in professionnaly thanks to his tiny size and the amazing leica lenses you can adapt on it. Clearly a must have for street photography or travel photography
If you don't know the channel 'one month two cameras' , check it out. This lady is an awesome photographer and knows about equipment, not overly techy, and of all of the cameras she owns or has owned, her hands down favourite is the GX9 and she talks about it with passion. Check her out, really cool lady.
The GX9 seems to have become quite popular in Australia with prices going up significantly. I have enjoyed using mine so far, with my only issue being the battery life. That being said I like pairing it up with the Pen-F if I travel around as the cameras and lenses are nice and compact.
I own have of these beauty and I love it. They are more expensive second hand than they were brand new: I purchased mine 600 Euros 4 years ago. At the time they were sold 700 Euros with the 12-32mm lens.
The only reason to buy the X100VI or any x100 series for me, is the leaf shutter, okay, and the film simulations. But if you don't make use of the leaf shutter and seamless, real high speed flash sync, you're better off with Fuji x-T5 or something, so you can change lenses. One, camera I'd love to see is a Lumix GX9II, with updated specs, Panasonic M4/3 cameras are great and perfect for travel.
Have been using this small cam for years now, even for client work. It's amazing for the small size and all the fabulous (& cheap) pancake lenses for the MFT system are a real plus. Learn editing and you never gonna miss the film simulation.
We are waiting for the new GX9ii, and it would take very little to make it an even more fearsome competitor for Fuji. Panasonic has everything needed to do it: new 25mpx sensor, LUT like on the S9, new AF...just add a larger and more resolute viewfinder and you will have the perfect "street camera" (I don't think they will include a superlative video mode like for the G9 or the GH7, but it will certainly be an upgrade compared to the GX9). I believe, as many photographers say, that on the FF 24mpx are still enough, so on the m43 25mpx will still be more than enough to guarantee exceptional photos.
No one is talking about the GX9 and other GX models? I wish that were true. The second hand price for them has shot theough the roof in the last couple of years. Even the old GX1 is pricy now!
Just picked up a GX9 with a 20mm F1.7 with a 6 month guarantee for £600 and a 12-60mm for £160 from LCE (London Camera Exchange) looking at prices elsewhere this is a bargain, in near mint with only a few hundred shutter count, well chuffed. Probably go for the 45-175mm as well for some wildlife while hiking, such a compact, light and brilliant set up for out and about and street photography
Sidenote: Due to the crop factor F1.7 on a micro four thirds sensor translates more to a full frame equivalent of F3.4. With F2.0 on APSC being more like F3 on FF. So in terms of light gathering, bokeh etc. x100v still has a lil advantage. (if you can talk about bokeh with 35mm eq.) Nonetheless gx9 is a capable little beast while being tame enough to be an edc.
I got an Olympus Pen E-P7 with low shutter count (595 actuations). No viewfinder but I spent about €200, whenever the viewfinder is needed there's the E-M10 IV or the cheap external viewfinder recommended by MarkusPix. The front dial is cool
I used to have my own version of this to satisfy the fuji sized hole in my heart after I sold my X100T. Olympus EM10 mkii with the 20mm f1.7. Took it on a trip and it was great if not for the messed up bubble in the viewfinder (bought on ebay). Now im thinking about the 26mm of 28mm lenses for my Z6 to replicate the small form factor for everyday
I've placed order 9 months ago and have been waiting on Fujix100Vi... Probably because I cannot afford Leica and want that classic range finder look (and manual dials). However really enjoy shooting on my GX85(GX80). Lumix Leica Summilux 15mm f/1.7 is one of my favorite lens on my GX85 (also with Lumix 14mm pancake lens)
I really enjoyed the GX8 body when I tried it out. The build quality and EVF were great, but I couldn't justify having that camera and a whole new suite of lenses when I already have the Sony A7CII. It was marginally lighter for m4/3 compared to full frame, but the difference was negligible imo.
The GX9’s L monochrome D is my favorite B&W jpeg. Sorry Acros & red filter. The GX9 is increasingly more difficult to find. The price is also increasing. The GX9 is a very competent camera. The images are very pleasing. 20MP is more than adequate for my needs. I have voted with my wallet and own one. I cancelled my X100VI order. I waited over three months with no joy. I will not wait a year for the camera nor pay a premium to own one. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I'd say that though the GX9 is a great camera, it would generally not be my go-to Lumix body for a rangefinder design. I would most likely prefer either the GX80/85 for the much cheaper price and slightly better ergos (to my eye). One thing that I really don't like about either the GX9 or the GX80 though, is really the viewfinder. It's a 16:9 TFT panel which was really made for camcorders, but are absolutely not meant to display a 4:3 image for photography. They are seemingly high res, but contrast ratio is really not that good and overall they are not a great experience. Also, the microphone port is lacking on both of those. The GX7 exists, but is still using the same formula as the GX80, and the GX80 is much better looking. If you're okay with a slightly taller camera than the X100VI (only by a few mm), but you want a camera body that is still affordable and has all the qualities of the GX9 (including the tilting EVF, 20MP sensor and great video, newer DFD AF ect) but you don't want to make compromises on the viewfinder as you want a large OLED one, and you want to be able to use external microphones to properly take advantage of that nice video : Look no further than the Lumix GX8. This camera really is a hidden gem. Think of it as Lumix's more practical equivalent of the Olympus Pen F.
I find that the images of the Lumix (and many a Panasonic camera) look a little harsh/contrasty compared to the Fuji. I also can't help but wonder; X100T? X100F?
I just traded my Canon RP for this camera. I’m happy so far with the look of the camera. Black tape over all logos and non black areas to make it look Seksi. If the prices are getting high on these I’d rather sell tho. Hehe 😈
Those used prices for the GX9 are also crazy! I just got one last week on the local used market, in very good condition, with 3 batteries and grip for 430 eur which I consider a fair price for such a camera.
DONT TALK ABOUT IT! Now every other alternatives will be hyped up and every scalper will jack their prices up. $100 camera should stay $100, not $1000.
@@TomCalton it certainly is affected by the crop, "f/1.7" means "focal length" / 1.7, and focal length (for a given angle of view) is directly tied to sensor size. What doesn't change is exposure settings, but that's not the same as light gathered and overall noise.
Huh, just had a look - I paid €674 for a brand new one with 12-32 kit lens from Amazon in March 2021. Used price seems to go up, just like the Fujies - rotfl..
I started looking for cameras and camera reviews on TH-cam because I was planning on getting myself a good and affordable camera that would allow me to take nice pictures and make vlogs. The prices I've seen so far make me and my wallet cry
nice, planned to step up from my gx9 this year. Just needed to wait for someone to make a video about this "forgotten gem" so i can sell it with profit. jk love my gx9
A good camera that's well know in the MFT community. But while it may be cheap vs the fuji, it's still selling used for about the same price it was new .... ;)
This camera does not serve the same market of the x100v. The lack of optical viewfinder was an immediate no for me (aesthetically and for my personal use), and that’s before we get into any internals. I did like the changeable lens option though, which is why I got the Xpro2, something I think better compares to what a potential x100v customer is looking for.
X100 series customer here, i think you're underestimating the market, who wants the Fuji, and why. When I decided I wanted a small everyday carry camera a year or so ago the V was already hard to get and wayyy out of my price budget. All the features of the X100VI are nice but my main focus simply boiled down to something I could take with me for everyday usage. Don't really care that much for the optical viewfinder, leaf shutter, or the manual controls. All those things are nice to have but not essential for my needs. What does interest me the most is the SOC jpgs. I love my current GX85 but that's the main gap, so I've had a x100VI on pre-order for months, but that delivery date keeps getting pushed back. I'm still looking forward to getting one (if I ever do) but if Panasonic releases an updated version of a GX series camera or if new pancake lenses come out for the S9, then I'm perfectly happy to go with one of those cameras.
@@jacobterrazas3147 what you’ve described is a camera that was out of the price range you were willing to pay and had a bunch of features you didn’t care for. That means you’re not its target market. It can have things that you like about it and willing to pay for and you still not be what you’re really looking for. It sounds like you found the camera that was more aligned with what you needed and cared about. I liked the x100v all except for the price that I could not afford, so an actual comparable alternative for me was the X-Pro 2 used. why alternative videos to the Fuji X100vi are 20 megapixel cameras. If that makes sense why do camera companies release cameras at the same time with different resolution? Thats like releasing a video showing a box of crayons and a blank paper and saying drawing a picture is an alternative to Hasselblad
No one is saying it's inexpensive, just that this is an alternative that is cheaper. $900 is still a lot of money for most people, but cameras are expensive.

My main goal was to find a portable, reasonably priced, feature rich camera with good quality images and I think it definitely ticks all those boxes.
but the same one NEW with the 3 kit lenses for 850 euro
@@eduvanv where? Are there camera stores selling the GX9 new?
@@strangnet Fnac in Belgium, it's out of stock as of now, bought it 8 months ago or so
@@eduvanv well, probably won't be in stock anymore then.
You're utterly wrong about the lack of professionals using m43. 5 minutes or less in Google will help you in the future
@@randall.chamberlain I said less, not none. 90% of the market is Canon, Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm.

I bought a GX9 and 15mm and 9 mm leica lenses and love it
I'm an Olympus user and I bought a E-PL 10 Pen and am amazed by its performance. I have a dozen m4/3 mount lenses.
I picked up a mint GX85 on FB marketplace recently for 320UKP, absolute steal and the 14-42 is a tiny gem.
I have GX8 and it's definitely an under the radar little street camera, and with a 14mm pancake, it's definitely pocketable.
The GX9 combined with 1.4-1.2 prime lenses or the Panasonic 25-50mm 1.8 is one incredible camera for sure ! I love mine.
I had a GX85. Was great. The GX9 is probably better. But given the fact that the 85 was already great... I have no doubts.
Oh yes the 14-140mm is such a great lens for travelling.
But how is the G100 with the flip out screen and no IBIS, and only one proper wheel?
@@coxbright it all depends what your looking for. Those items don’t impact my experience since I’m using it as a high quality point and shoot setup.

I would prefer the predecessor, the GX8 is slightly heavier, but it's weather sealed and has a microphone jack as well as a fully articulated screen... most of the other features are the same.
Yeah, in some ways the GX9 is a weird “side-grade” rather than a straight upgrade
I own the GX8. A good camera. I primarily do photography so I much prefer the tilt screen. I appreciate the audio jac. It would be nice to have a standard 3.5mm jac. What is the story with the IBIS not working when doing video?
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
nice video, but, they are different cameras for different customers
Leaf shutter (and the benefits when working with flash) on the Fuji and built in ND filter are things that any MILC just can't do
Panasonic colours just can't compete with Fuji film simulations out of the camera (granted subjective)
But really if you want a small pocketable camera this camera or the Fuji X-e series is a good option
She talks about the G9, not GX 😇
the 40 MP x100vi sensor is very useful for street photography; it gives you the resolution to crop/re-frame after taking the picture.
Had the GX9 and the Leica 15/f1,7 which is a great combi. Sold it because of old technology (Micro-USB) and the oldschool Panasonic App.
I have a GX9, it's a beautiful little camera. So compact and very capable.
Nice review, hopefully a successor or an om system pen f may come 🙏
I'd love to see either!
Sidenote: Due to the crop factor F1.7 on a micro four thirds sensor translates more to a full frame equivalent of F3.4. With F2.0 on APSC being more like F3 on FF. So in terms of light gathering, bokeh etc. x100v still has a lil advantage. (if you can talk about bokeh with 35mm eq.)
Nonetheless gx9 is a capable little beast while being tame enough to be an edc.
An F1.7 on a M43 has more light gathering than an F2 on ASPC. It's just the depth of field that is different, f3.4 v f3 equivalent.
3:43 in over two years of use I never discovered the clever battery flap. So thanks, Tom!
I bought this in mint condition with the kit lens for $525. While it doesn’t stand up to my X100V it’s a great travel camera.
Very nice alternative indeed, but the DOF of the 23mm 2.0 on Fuji is better than the 1.7 on M43. Also, the GX9 lacks an nd filter.
I already have a GX85, but passed on buying the silver version of the GX9 secondhand last year. Should have got it.
Why not just buy a used older generation x100f or x100v for around the same price? Seems like a closer alternative
I am all in for a 422 10bit GX/GM size m43 camera. GH7 is too big, lens for s9 too.
I would love to see kerping m43 compact and versatile.
I find that the images of the Lumix (and many a Panasonic camera) look a little harsh/contrasty compared to the Fuji. I also can't help but wonder; X100T? X100F?
I paid £549 for my Gx9 with a 12-32mm lens, brand new years ago, how is it still so much now?!
Well, if you have a tighter budget the g100 or g100d can get 85% of what gx9 does for about half of the gx9 price
The GX8 was just as good, as they dropped some good specs on the GX9
Better in some ways to the GX9.

I don’t wanna waste my time in the LR, is the Fujifilm the only solution?
Is it just me, or is the color reproduction of m43 cameras a bit "flat" (even if you carefully edit the raw files)?
It is a bit oversized. It is even bigger than some APSC cameras with a similar feature set
I have owned 2 LUMIX compacts, never again. I literally could not figure out all of the menus and submenus required to simply take a photo.
yeah , i have a gx9 and the menu can take some getting to grips with but when you get your head round it it is not so bad.
ppl already talked so much about this cam being the x100 alternative. tbh, it just doesnt cut it
Why not consider the Fujifilm X-E3 with the 27mm pancake as an alternative to the X100 VI?
A good choice. The XE3 sells at a premium over its initial price.

Don’t you need to consider the crop factor also for the aperture?
That would make the Fuji come ahead there.
In terms of depth of field, yes, this has a contributing effect. But in terms of light entering the camera, that is unaffected by the crop.
@@TomCalton Ah, didn’t know that. Thanks for the clarification ✌️
@@TomCalton it certainly is affected by the crop, "f/1.7" means "focal length" / 1.7, and focal length (for a given angle of view) is directly tied to sensor size. What doesn't change is exposure settings, but that's not the same as light gathered and overall noise.

Also no exposure dials.
To me, a defining feature of the rangefinder film cameras were literally the rangefinder optical viewfinder and the exposure dials. why alternative videos to the Fuji X100vi are 20 megapixel cameras. If that makes sense why do camera companies release cameras at the same time with different resolution? Thats like releasing a video showing a box of crayons and a blank paper and saying drawing a picture is an alternative to Hasselblad
This is NOT inexpensive used, especially in Canada. Some are asking more for this than it cost new to get it in this country 🙁
No one is saying it's inexpensive, just that this is an alternative that is cheaper. $900 is still a lot of money for most people, but cameras are expensive.
