I work in construction up and down ladders, scaffolds, tight spaces, etc. You name it, I do it. For years, I was a die hard lace up work boot guy. Chippewa, red wing, etc. I saw your review for the Redback, and it changed my life. They are on my foot, ready to go a lot quicker, which is a big plus in the morning trying to get out the door. But the biggest thing is comfort. My feet no longer hurt from working all day. The Redbacks are extremely comfortable. Maybe not as durable in the long run, but they are half the price and a lot more comfortable. This will be my go-to boot going forward

Ive got the Jim Greens but in the dark brown leather. Best boot I've ever owned, they're super comfortable after break in period (a week or two) and look great in my opinion. I work long shifts in hospitality roughly 15,000 steps per shift and my feet never get sore like they do even in sneakers. the wide toe box lets your foot splay out so you don't get any un wanted pressure points. I put a thin leather insole inside that's now molded to my foot but that was more to take up a bit of space then to add comfort. I think its done both. I will say the yellow calf skin lining does leach into your socks for the first few months so don't wear white socks if you want them to stay white. I would definitely recommend Jim Green Stockmans!

Blundstone 500 great chuck on knock about casual boot. Single leather means cool in summer / worn at festivals / out on bike / good waterproofing. I have full leather lined boots (cheaney) which feel great but tend to be warmer. For ease of wear - love my 500's. Buff up ok, I'm super happy with the leather on them. Cost per wear - great!

Got my Redback Boots for two years now and the hold up amazingly good so far. Soles are solid still, leather obviously is not even phased yet and the midsole still got squish for days.
It also does not have a counter cover but rather the full leather thickness as the counter is external not giving you a hotspot at the edge of the counter cover.

I have been an automotive mechanic for over 30 years now. Long hours on my feet on concrete floors. Redbacks are my go to comfort boot. Feels like almost wearing sneakers and very long lasting. First pair lasted ten years with winter boots being swapped in 3 to 4 months a year. Second pair still going strong at 5 years. The outsole’s are what finally broke down and developed large cracks that went completely through the rubber. Pretty amazing slip resistance as well.

I bought redbacks after blundstones. I work on concrete flat floors. The big difference between them is the redbacks are very high and have crazy arch support. It is so uncomfortable and over the top but if that's what you want go for it. The blunstones are easier to walk in and feel a lot more normal but I would prefer flat Chelsea boots.

  • @davewood406

I use my Chelseas for work. I've only had 2 pair so far. I got the Ariats with a work allowance program, They seemed built well enough but like he says in the beginning(generally speaking), fit was an issue. The Ariat isn't for you if you have a high instep. I struggled for months hoping they'd break in over the top of my foot. Didn't happen. I was in the bay area at the time and Palo Alto has one of 2 Keen stores. I tried their safety toe chelsea on and fell in love. Perfect right out of the box. A liberal oiling and they were basically broken in right out of the box. The sole did get a little more pliable in a week or so but they were never super stiff.
So if you have wider feet but not so wide you need EEE and have a high instep. I would point you to Keens. Got a couple years in em, holding up great.

I wanna let people know, your feet may make the decision for you, even over country and materials. I started with the Red Back Great Barrier boot, and while I loved it abstractly as a boot, it didn't work for my foot. It turned out the Blundstone 550 did. I am currently working in Redbacks. Really comfortable once you get used to the "loose ankle" feeling compared to a laced boot. I only wish the Redbacks had more protection on top of the safety toe. After 5 months or so, the leather took a lot of damage. The Rossi Hercules has that extra protection, but it's no available in Canada.

As an Australian with narrow long feet and a high arch, I've been working in timber mills for 23 years, farming and timber (lumber) sales for many more. No one I know willingly wears Blundstone any more, over priced and uncomfortable. Currently wearing Rebacks, prefer Rossi Hercules for foot shape, wear, support and comfort but you have to go a size up and are hard to find. Most blokes I know wear Redback, Mongrel, Steel Blue or Oliver.
I bought a pair of Jim Green, they're so wide they are ridiculous on me, I lost one stepping in a mud puddle, the suction just pulled it off my foot. Funny but the leather around the toe box cut up on the first day and the gore on one boot lost it's structure after a week, a lot of you blokes love them but I could only recommend them for looks on the wide of foot.

By the second email over 2 weeks they stated they would not be in stock for two months, and they "didnt receive the first email" A week later I get a shipping confirmation!? Boots arrive and the brown color is noticeably differ between the two boots. I wear them anyway. They are ill fitting, too large. A month later Im having back problems. I work in a duracell plant making AA cans and have bought 3 pairs (one a year) of the ariat turbos and they are worth the it. We get almost enough boot credit each year to cover the cost completely, which is part of why I get them. I’ll say my first pair are falling apart but it’s the sole material itself none of the seams have ripped on any of them. Mainly needs better insoles imo, I’m not a huge fan of the ones it comes with.

I've been looking at Chelsea boots too as an everyday smart casual wear item. The thing that has often put me off is over if the elastic gusset can ever be replaced since they always seem to look at me as a potential failure point. The annoying thing I've had footwear buying though is how inconsistent a fit I get, not helped by wide feet. Not helped by half-sizes not being easily found on shelves in my size

I have a love hate relation with my Redbacks, which I bought after seeing several of your Chelsea videos. They don't offer widths (or I don't see them) and I'm a EE in Nicks, E in sneakers, and the Redbacks were nightmares to "break in." Which if you look at my boots closely you see I've essentially cause the leather to flare out to the sides as my foot is just too wide for them. Now they do feel mostly comfortable, I can wear them most days, but others I just can't. I noticed Jim Green doesn't have widths either, but I have a pair of their Vellie's that fit well so I'd consider them. Obviously I could just go with Nicks, I know my size in them, but I'm not sure I want to put that much money into a pair of Chelsea's right now. I hope Redback starts offering some wider options though. The boots, and the leather seemed fine other than that and I like how they look.

I have a pair of Caterpillar chelsea boots this a "sample not for sale" that I got from a discount shop 20 years ago. They look great, the 360 Goodyear welt seems legit and not fake, the are kinda dressy but with strong and durable rubber outsoles so you can dress them up or down, unfortunately between shoes, sneakers and boots they do not have much wear, the good thing is they still look like new.

From someone who never liked boots, skateboarded using skate shoes then went on to wear vans slip ons exclusively I gotta say the Blundstones work boots I got were a real eye opener. My main gripe with the vans was getting my feet wet in the torrential rain we get in Florida. I tried a pair of Ariat traditional lace up work boots for work, I don't know what you call em like average construction guy traditional boots. Incredibly heavy and lacing when needing to get in and out for my trade suucckks then I nearly died partially lacing to have the hooks catch on opposite shoed lace and went down hard. The Blundstone work chelseas are incredibly light and easy enough to put on and take off with one hand on one foot. If I have a gripe its the leather seems not super durable. Mine aren't incredibly old and they have chips and flakes all over. I haven't tried any othef brand chelsea but the Blundstones have converted me from wearing exclusively vans slip ons to wearing boots primarily.

I wanted to like redback and blundstone but their british sizing meant I was in between the sizes they manufacture. I'm 11.5 E on brannock but their half sizes are just a wider version of the size below. The arch ended up being too far back so my actual arch ended up hanging over nothing causing a bunch of foot pain.

Goodyear welted, steel shank, leather is good quality, and priced under $300. Super comfortable chelsea that looks great, definitely not work wearable, designed as a casual shoe but very well made, and the price is good for what you get. I haven’t worn them super regularly, but.. I’ve still got em’. I’ve had inner heel relined in new leather as it wore through, and the sole has cracked slightly.. I think a fresh sole after 30 years might be in order.. I’m not sure that I have another 30 years in me, so I suspect they’ll out live me.
