Great video as usual. Ive been a bladesmith (mostly chef knives) for 10 years or so and started making and honing straights in the past couple years and your videos have helped me greatly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Oh Phuckin A! Right on time. Im working in 3 Wade choppers, and freshening up a Tillotson Sheffield tonight and a self haircut for fun. Thanks Dr Matt. Shout out to Frank Ronin. Thanks for the Wades, Landers Frary, and Clark, and great 12k Edges.

They Put Your Name on the Box because You Helped to Promote the Stone and have shown the Public on How to Use the Imperia La Roccia Finishing Stone; You are Special to ILR and to a Viewer like me who Enjoys Watching Your Videos.
Hello Sir! I just had to leave a comment to thank you for all the great instructional videos you have made. I got my first straight razor from an antique store earlier this month and a gold dollar that was supposed to come "shave ready" from razor emporium but had nicks in the blade visible to the naked eye(they did sort of make it up to me by sending me a ralf aust for 60 bucks and telling me to keep the Gold Dollar). After watching your videos i purchased three stones pre your recommendations a King delux 1k, Nortion two sided 4k and 8k, and a naniwa 12k. I followed all the steps you outlined, and I was able to get both razors shave ready and hanging hairs sharp. Both also passed the shave test with flying colors! Thanks again your the great instruction Dr Matt.
Big meaty early Sheffield, inconsistent grinds are a curse on early Sheffields . Your the master to assess it so well , thanks as always for the tips Matt , much appreciated 👌
Hi Dr Matt, Would LOVE an IRL stone! Thank you for the recent recommendations over email! Thank you for consistently providing great information! And Thank you for the little slice of Americana you serve up in each of your videos with you being you! Looking forward to coming back home to the states for a bit to be around some ‘Mericans and things that go bang! Chris
Great, informative video. I own 3 vintage Wade & Butcher straight razors and, while they each generally provide a smooth comfortable shave, they can take a bit of extra care and effort to hone. The ILR stone would be a godsend. I have managed to amass a very nice vintage straight razor collection through careful eBay shopping. But, at my income level, I cannot justify the expense of a collection of quality whetstones. I have a set of small Arkansas stones (soft, hard and black); a very small con vexed cuticle I purchased from Jarrod, an Chinese natural stone from "Whippeddog" and an assortment of unbranded Chinese synthetics. I manage to keep a decent edge on all of my razors, but, a higher quality finishing stone would do wonders.
@@colofduty3836 Thanks for the heads up. I have seen the ADAEE stone, as I search Ali express regularly. I didn't know if I could trust the "12000" grit rating. But if it's getting passable reviews from experienced honers on B&B, it might be worth the $30 or so to check it out.
@@colofduty3836 Thank you for the heads up. I check Ali-Express frequently and I'd seen the ADAEE stone. I did not fully trust the 12000 grit rating. If the stone is getting good reviews on B&B, it might be worth $30.
Nice to see a new video doc never get tired of a honing session. Maybe you should put a live cam in your shop 🤠 Interesting the ILR stone never hone on it. Also I'm looking to get an Ark but don't know which is best for finisher the surgical black or the translucent? Thanks
I have and they are the same. Most people say there's a ratio of strokes on the stone of one side of the razor to the other... I just do it the same number like a regular Western grind razor.
I love Wade and butcher razors, I have several like 12-14 of them about 6 are true wedges. I agree I love a Janat edge on them. Is your daughter still making the shave cloths? I didn't see you use one on this shave.
She hasn't made any as she's grown up and moved away. I do still have a few sets left for sale. I use them every shave. You may not have noticed them here as that's when the video goes into fast mode and the music really starts thump'n! 😆 37:03
I was just thinking that I needed to see a new video from you and there you were. I have a couple of razors I will be sending your way for your special touch. I got a Yuri razor that I need you to put an edge on. Talk to you soon.
I am interested in getting an ILR. I have been wanting to try one for quite some time. So I would love to be put in for the give away. I make my own box for my stones, it is more of a personal touch that makes it my own. Love the bomb shells at the end. Cracked me up. :) Thanks for the videos and your time. Cheers.
Nice work & good tip about killing the edge before a doo over. Ps im new to sharpening and would like to try as many stones as possible. What are your favourite stones & grades?
Awesome video! I can’t wait to try working on my W&B’s. Hopefully they come out as well as that one did 💈🪒🤙 P.S. Those jugs at the end are amazing too!
Dr. Matt, I've noticed on a few Wade and Butchers that they seem to lag in sharpness until about the 5k or 8k range. Then, they "catch up" and feel about like one would expect from any other razor. I don't know if this is just my technique, maybe I'm rushing that old Sheffield steel, or maybe it's something other people have noticed.
I've noticed that on some other razors as well. I think all that matters is the finished product. I hear guys on the forums saying if you can't shave with your razor after 1K, then you have work to do as the bevel is not yet set. Idiots!!!
Is it possible to get one side of the razor sharper than the other side? When I shave I feel one side of my face cuts better than the other side. Could that just be dominant hand vs non dominant hand shaving?
@@jasonclapp5051 - the cutting edge is the product of BOTH sides converging to form a single apex so there’s only one edge regardless of what side of the razor is touching your face. You’re correct that it is most likely the difference in how each hand moves the razor across your face. The key is to keep the spine of the razor close to your face. Watch my first pass how the spine is nearly touching my face as I drag it down. That’s the difference between your right and left hand. 👊🏻🙌🏻
Dr.Matt, great videos. I currently have a Naniwa 5k & 8k super stone. Been trying to decide on a stone to finish on. Would the ILR be a good choice to use after those stones? What are your thoughts?
It would be a good stone. I don’t know where you’re at in your sharpening journey but if you’re fairly new, I’d suggest a synthetic finisher and get good with that progression to where you can consistently get good edges on multiple razors… then move to some natural finishers. The synthetic finisher to have is the Naniwa 12K Super Stone.
@@drmatt357 Yes, I'm a longtime shaver, but finally decided to try my hand at sharpening my own razor, largely due to watching many of your videos. I really appreciate how you keep your approach simple and make things much less intimidating. Thanks for the good advice, I'll look for the 12K next.
