    I don't get why LucasArts never made a Star Wars adventure game. It would have sold phenomenally. (And no, I don't count "Yoda Stories.")

      I think they didn't want to compete with Star Wars Galaxies. I lost a lot of time to SWG.

      Wasn't Star Wars Galaxies a newer game? A Star Wars adventure in the mid-90s would have been quite something. Like Indiana Jones 4 was.

    if the genre was dead after the release of fandago we would have never had the longest journey black mirrors broken swords to name a few the genre is still alive and kicking see beyond a steel sky

    I would sooner say that King's Quest VIII, Gabriel Knight III, and Space Quest 6 killed adventure gaming, and LucasArts let it live a bit longer.

    • @AdventureGameHotspot

      That was kind of the premise. LA tried to keep it rolling but the industry was dying. Grim's poor sales

      Grim's poor sales kind of broke the back of the "golden age" of Adventure games

      Gabe 3 was certainly the internal trigger for Sierra's abandoning the games

    People were not playing Fallout in 1998. It was a gem but an unexpected one. Nobody talked about Fallout until much much later. I found Fallout by chance, none of my friends knew it. Problably we were playing Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Baldur's Gate, or Carmaggeddon at that time.

    • @AdventureGameHotspot
      @AdventureGameHotspot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate the dialogue. The one rebuttal I have is that Fallout 2 was the third highest selling PC game in 98 and it was released in November. It was a smashing success. Carmageddon. Oh man. Now that is some good memories.
      Cheers my friend

      Surely 2 was a selling success, after I spoke about that awesome little game I found by pure luck to every living thing on my way.
      I don't know what happened to LucasArts graphic adventures games. My favourited genre, my favourited company, they were kings at that time. I miss them :(

    I think fair points made here. Like I said on facebook, we at Revolution were sitting through moronic little meetings with publishers in rooms with Resident Evil posters all over the walls. Metal Gear Solid... they loved that. They were saying - we like your story stuff, but can you drop the rest and stick some guns in. Fun times.
    I do think things have never looked better for a re-birth, though. A game has to be good these days, and that's all that matters.

    Great summary of the game and tone of the genre at the time! While there were some hits released in the years after, I think they were more outliers, with some falling prey to the hybrid action/adventure 3D trend of the time. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on the genre’s evolution since ‘98. I think it owes a bit to AGS engine’s release, as it appeared in the early 2000s and allowed p+c fans to continue creating stories where the genre left off. It’s spawned a new generation of successful indie releases from the likes of Grundislav, Wadjet Eye, and Harvester Games.

    • @AdventureGameHotspot
      @AdventureGameHotspot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree unequivocally Rebecca. In fact we discuss this with Ken Williams in an interview that you can find on the channel. AGS and crowdfunding have played a huge role in rekindle the genre.

    I'll be blunt. I never liked the 3D interface, the early control scheme, more to the point. What killed Point and Click for me, was that there was NO MORE POINTING and NO CLICKING. All the adventure games I love, have different kinds of point and click. With very very few exceptions. Personally, Grim Fandango ... not my kind of adventure story. It was funny. But too quirky. Maybe Tim Burton humor has ruined it for me later down the line. I can't watch his movies anymore, either, because they're just too weird. I know it's a tragedy. I love adventure games. But I strongly prefer something grounded over weirdness. Turned out Tim Schafers games were just as weird, most of the time. But I love the genre, and everything not like those games, in there. And there is a threshold, too. For instance: Monkey Island. Perfect in my book. Monkey Island 2: weird, but okay.

      The clicking is a very satisfying feeling to me also. It took me a while to let From Fandango into my club. Probably half way through the game before I began to let myself appreciate it for the reasons that you mentioned. I felt like my freedom was taken at first. Also, the setting and story didn't relate to me in any way. Eventually it all came together and I appreciated the art.
      Did you play Beyond a Steel Sky yet and if so what do you think of the interface?

    I did buy Grim Fandango around time of release, was very excited for a new LucasArts adventure game. But I've only played it once (I've played Monkey Island 1&2 and Sam & Max more times than I can count). I just didn't really like it. Could be it was just the 3D was so off-putting, I don't know. Maybe I should give it another try, I might like the remaster more.
    I'm so glad devs are producing 8 bit and 16 bit games once again, long live point and click
