No it’s not. It’s a religion. It’s not an ethnicity. I’m fulled blooded German. I can’t decide to be Italian, Greek, or Irish. I’m a Baptist, but I could wake up tomorrow and choose to be Jewish, Catholic, or Buddhist. My grandmother was born Catholic and converted to marry my grandfather. People truly have no clue of the difference between religion and ethnicity. That’s truly sad. And yes, I do know for a fact I’m right. I’ll be glad to let you borrow my genetics text book.
"Rejecting jobs outside the home"??? I lived in NYC for the better part of a decade and saw scores of Hasidic women working downtown everyday. And I was told many of their husbands did not work, but studied the Talmud/Torah full-time. Was I lied to?
No. I am an orthodox Jew, not Hasidic. What you are seeing are women who work while their husbands "learn". They are mostly secretaries. This woman is talking about higher education which is something that those women will not aspire to because they work AND raise children. That is their role, so this woman is an anomaly. And I am soooo proud of her. She is awesome and powerful. A real feminist unlike the fake feminists we see in the secular world.

I was the first Orthodox Jew in my Bank in my state... I was the only one wearing a kippah.. Jews would come into the bank, and they couldn't believe their eyes!

That's totally not true most orthodox women work outside the home usually not high profile jobs but many run their own companies my wife is a professional and I'm a Talmid teacher of high level orthodox boys

This is how most Jewish women are raised - to be a whirling dervish, accomplishing many tasks at once by watching their mothers do this. Not just multitasking but allways on overdrive and on top of this, for the religious woman, making a dinner party for her family and guests every Friday night for the Shabbat meal!
Megyn Kelly made a factual error; Hasidic women are not discouraged from working outside of the home! In fact in most Hasidic households, women are the breadwinners, because men are studying the Torah. In Burough Park Brooklyn, most of the shops are owned and operated by Hassidic women. The thing is most stay to themselves and don't run for public office or anything outside of their community.

"...Typically rejecting jobs outside the home". This is ignorance and deliberate sensationalism. Any Chassidic woman has the option to work outside the home. However, the home is the first priority of a Chasidic woman and therefore many women wait until their kids are older to work full time. However, even if one has little kids, if it works out for them then they'll work outside the home. There are tens of thousands of Chasidic women and girls who graduated school and are working outside their homes.
It was shocking to me, too, that NBC's Today Show & Megyn both seem to be completely ignorant to the fact that for decades observant Jewish women have been involved outside of their homes in the workforce. The Judge quashed that by simply stating that it's become more accepted. I loved that simple, true response that psychologically disarmed the negative connotation in (I don't know the word for it) but it was done in a soft manner. I loved it. At first I thought, why doesn't she destroy that notion. Then I said to myself, wait, why destroy it & make Megyn look foolish for asking about something many people believe because they honestly don't know anything about observant Jews. Her answer was perfect.
FactsRule It may have been perfect to quiet Megyn but it wasn't factual. Chassidishe women have always worked when they needed or wanted to.
Chai Fried and may I add, have degrees in various fields...are businesswoman, real estate agents, etc etc. The skys the limit to their talents ( brains and creativity, as well!)

The reality is that this woman comes from a starkly different society than many of us. I say different, not traditional or old-fashioned, intentionally.
We live in a world where women must be the exact same as men. We fight for rights like equal pay and in which the ideal is women and men equally represented in all professions.
Nothing is wrong with that.
But there is another story. Men and women are created differently, no matter how much we protest. There is simply different plumbing and wiring between the two sexes. We can protest and deny this fact, but it still exists.
The judge, Rochie Freier, comes from the latter camp. She believes that family, and the continuation of humankind, is the future. It is family first, career second. And there is nothing wrong with that. Instead of pushing her to change her world views, and to throw her kids and grandkids into the backseat of her life, why not encourage her husband (and all men) to also have the same worldview.
The modern feminist movement is obsessed with women being equal to men. Equality isn't always about having the exact same things, but about respect for one another.
When she talks about her husband allowing her to run for office, it's not a matter of being submissive to her husband's will. Rather, she is in an equal and loving relationship where each spouse respects one another. If a man were to run for office, he would most certainly need his wife's permission to do so. If he runs, despite her abject disapproval, then they are not in an equal, loving, and respectful relationship. Certainly, the inverse would apply. If she ran without his approval, then she is disrespecting her spouse.
There is room for both camps to exist in this world. Certainly, no young girl should be told that they cannot pursue their passion at a young age because that's "men's work". Feminists fight for this right and make great strides in gaining respect for women in the world. However, if a woman does choose the traditional route, or to consult her husband, it does not make her less of a woman.

Megyn Kelly keeps reframing the conversation to paint Hasidic people in a bad light, putting emphasis on how unusual she is, and asking if her husband tried to stop her. Plenty of Hasidic people are highly educated and working in serious positions- both men and women.

When religions have good principles that protect people whether in the public or private sphere, I have nothing against them provided people adhere to them and it results in happy, safe, loving, healthy, caring and long lasting family. Otherwise it is best to stay out. What we need today is to return to good living principles and stick to them .. the problems otherwise are far too great to ignore such good safe healthy living principles.
All that remains is to have the right to wear one of those cool fur hats...

How can anyone take her seriously as a judge when she has to ask her husband for permission to do the job?!
Because in a marriage, one should ask their spouse if it is okay to spend tons of money on Law school, be out of the house most of the day, and perhaps, not even be there for dinner when he comes home. And if Mr. Freir had wanted to be a criminal court judge, I should expect it would be the humane thing for him to do as well, to ask his wife permission to take such a major life step.

Ok it is a woman, nothing new. The thing is that all that hasidic promotion ain't good for her job. Suppose she has a muslim law offender ( pretty serious stuff) standing against her. Does that end automatically in an higher appeal or miscontent? Are her rulings overcast with her religious background? That could. In my eyes her relgious background and the promotion for it will work against her in her profession at a certain point. The law, strictly taken, is a set of rules set by the entire society , loose from any religious conviction. A judge judges according to his conscience and honour. Not according the leading hand of God in the hasidic community. With that I do not say that her conscience ain't right or rightful. I only say that her hasidic background could compromise the outcome of her rulings one day. It is very easy to find black sheep. Anyways I am also proud of her.

I'm bothered by anyone who accepts notoriety and attention "for being more special or better than other people based on their religion or status as a woman".
A judge needs to be impartial not thinking differently about anyone based on their religion or even lack of religion, impartial to their nationality, impartial to being male or female, & impartial to family roles.
Because she has allowed herself this media attention and brags about her status shows her partiality and this isn't beautiful to me it is a red flag that she will be partial and deal more favorably with hassidic people in court. Her religion only for it's cultural beliefs than torah truths if fully understood is highly prejudicial and extreme and doesn't represent our society at all.
Even Jewish people are not welcome or accepted in the "community" or able to marry a Hassidic Jew without being excommunicated. This is the extreme prejudism about which I speak. I can't aplaud her but only warn others she will prefer her kind due to the extreme pressure and control of her community; many of whom have financially contributed to her success for a reason. In the Hassidic world the pressure to conform & to be controlled always comes with severe consequences such as your children not being allowed in good schools or to marry in the community to be unable to see or communicate with your family etc.... I speak of the consequences of excommunication.
When she will volluntarily leave Hassidic life to a more liberal faith where she is free, I could try to believe in her.

In any case, Judge Freier has no accent that I can hear. Of course I also grew up in Brooklyn, where everyone sounds like this.
Hey the reason she has an accent is that Hassidic communities speak in Yiddish ( Generally, it's their mother tongue) and English is a sencond language. Why do you think it's sad that she's traditional. You can see what an amazing mother she is, how much she gives to her children, grandchildren, and her entire community! Her traditions are what makes her into who she is :) Just like you probably celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years. Jews Celebrate Shabbat as a family every single week!

In 2017 if living in a good marriage built on love, affection, and common goals, a spouse getting approval from their spouse for life decisions, should be the norm. It’s about communication between the spouses. Understand what she’s saying on a deeper level. Don’t be so literal. This is not about getting permission as much as getting approval. If my wife disapproves of something I wanna do, I don’t do it. This has nothing to do with religion or tradition. This is about marriage.
