so i have a suggestion for you, for the scratch on the back you could put your name on the back kind of like a directors chair if you like and if not sorry by the way i love your channel
Hey, I just wanted to ask you if ypu can go to El Salvador its a small state in Central America but at the same time I don't want you to waste money or your time.
Serena, my favorite part of your channel is your “it doesn’t have to be completely perfect” approach. You make redoing furniture seem very approachable and less intimidating. I also love how you give yourself constructive criticism on how to do better next time, we all get to learn from your feedback. Thank you!!
Awww, thank you!! I will never pretend to be the best, most skilled, most this....most that. I learn as I go. And I think my biggest lesson is to SLOW DOWN. I was under time constraints due to my trip coming up and I needed to get this done before leaving, along with some other things. So what I did in 1 day, I should have spread out to 2 days. Thanks for the wonderful feedback! :)
Wow! I looked that chair up. I knew it was 1930's-1940's era just from the style, but apparently, it's even more interesting. WWII US Army folding chair. Brilliant Find! Thank you for restoring it so beautifully.
This turned out great! I am working on restoring an end table, so this video was especially relevant. I can understand why showing your mistakes can be a bit embarrassing, but they tend to be the most useful and informative parts of your video for me, so please keep doing it!
I love your videos - I learn a ton but I really appreciate your humility in the learning process. Makes this all seem much more approachable to beginners!
You did a great job! Also thank you for not putting chalk paint on it! I’m so tired of seeing videos of people doing that to vintage furniture. It’s sometimes nice to see the original piece in how it was intended to look.
So happy to see a makeover that is actually a restoration. Relieved it doesn't involve painting over a beautiful piece of wooden furniture and then sanding random bits to make it look "brocante". This was very nicely done! Good thrift find, great restoration.
Looks like an old theater or church seat. You did a spectacular job. If you’re going to use this to sit during podcasts I’d highly recommend making cushions for it or else you’ll be needing a heck of a lot more mama back rubs.
I love how you are so humble about your work. You do a great job but aren't afraid to point out mistakes to help the rest of us learn. Not many people have that much integrity or confidence. Beautiful little chair! And have a great time in Brazil!😎❤
You're my FAVORITE DIY'er. You dont just make everything seem effortless. You're very real and even tell us what mistakes you've made and how to correct them. You're thorough and pay special attention to details.
Serena, I’m totally with you on wallpaper! As a Sensory-Challenged (extreme) AD/H/D’er, I’ve always found wallpaper to be visually overwhelming. For me, it’s far better to have painted walls that function as a plain canvas; on which I get to decide how much visual stimuli to add. Figuring out the balance between too much (over-stimulating) and too little (boring) is where the creativity comes in! I believe that you are gifted in that regard: Your home has both warmth and an open, airy feel-probably great Feng Shui too! The chair for this project was such a good find, and, as usual, you transformed it beautifully! My only two cents worth of advice would be this: Be kinder to yourself as you learn by doing...You are an Artist, and Creative Problem-Solving is what you do, and generously share with us. Thankyou!
Great video, and even greater advice. Not beating yourself up about what you did wrong in a project, but instead seeing it as a learning experience is a life lesson to always treasure. Plus I think that chair is the cutest!
Yea. You are the only person I have ever seen put wax on that way. I have refinished so much furniture and this is the way I was taught to put on wax with plain Johnson paste wax which works wonders. A professional furniture maker taught me. You can get wax into all the areas of a piece this way.
I like the chair. I am glad that you show the mistakes along the way. I have done d iy projects that took three of four tries before I got it right. Showing the mistakes makes it realistic.
Yes!! The woodgrain is giving me life. :) I am thinking that the chair back is a different wood than the seat. But I can't tell. It looks like a different pattern.
you get better results if you use wood conditioner before using any stain products. Wood Conditioner prepares bare wood for staining. It penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance of stains.
Unless that waxed chair is covered, it's going to ruin your clothing of the person who sits on it. This is why I always use a clear coat over freshly stained wood that will get direct use of body to seat. Just a word to the wise from someone who has ruined far too many pieces of clothing using wax. It's great on furniture that you don't actually sit on. I also recommend foam sanding blocks. They work wonders on surfaces like this.
Yes, I definitely understand! I am planning to make a little seat cushion for it, so it should be fine! I definitely would have preferred to use my satin High-Performance clear coat, but I was all out. :) Oh--and I couldn't find my foam sanding blocks, either! Believe it, I went looking for them! LOL
I'd never seen that waxing technique before with the wax inside the rag. Thank you for the info. And I think the chair if beautiful. You should be proud
I have a chair just like that, it is such a cute chair! I learned the hard way too, that all steps in working with wood need to be done with the grain. Like you said though, your refinished version still looks waaaay better than what you started with and something you can be proud of!!
As someone who has refinished wood many times, my recommendation to you is when you after wash the wood use a green or red stripping pad. It works so much better than a rag. And use a plastic stripping tool. It's shaped like a scoop and will pick up the finish as you scrape...and it won't gouge your wood! It looks beautiful btw!!
It’s perfectly imperfect! This is a great one. Such functionality and for a smaller space! You literally find the best pieces of furniture hands down 👏🏾🙌🏾 can’t wait for the next one and the podcast!
I can't believe your are coming to my country. I really hope you enjoy being here. I live in Campinas, near São Paulo City. Loved your chair. It looks wonderful.
What a lovely, simple chair. I have no quarrel with paint, but I am glad you used that tint instead - it seems more elegant and of more value - I really like the chair and the job you did.
I like the 12 Week Year too, but I've adapted it to a fall, spring, and summer because I'm in academics. Just breaks up my seasons into the time I can have time to think about and achieve goals. DIY lands in the summer!
This is a great video, most people when makin mistakes aren't honest where as you just came clean and talked about how to not do the same. I really liked that it was honest and the chair came out amazingly 😊
Hi Serena! Fabulous find! I'm a little jealous. 😘 My very first paid job was for a construction company when I was 14. After school and Saturdays I was the wood stripper. We restored old Victorian homes in Dallas, TX. So as you can imagine, LOTS of wood to strip! Fond memories.
You need a junky work table instead of doing this on the ground! Years ago I got one of those 8’ office-style tables with heavy folding legs, and I do everything possible at waist height. I just throw on a few layers of newspaper and top with a disposable plastic paint cloth.
What a Beautiful chair from the 30's or 40's? You did a lovely job as always:) You do a marvelous job, explaining each step. Thank you for restoring it back I like unique pieces, but sometimes giving it a new lease on life like you did keeps a period piece back in its time:)
I love your chair, too! Believe me, I've had to "lower my expectations" on EVERY DIY or creative project I've EVER done! You're just keeping it real, lovey! lol
LOVE the chair! Glad to hear ur son takes care of his momma with massages, I was the same with my mom. My mom was always working so she loved her "personal massage therapist" as she used to call me lol
Thank you for your video. I'm planning to refinish some furniture. I have a similar chair like yours to do, a barstool that I'm going to use as a plant stand, a dresser, a small stool that went with some outside furniture, a small nightstand or two... I have a few things in my queue. Yours looks wonderful!
Nice project came up well. It's an old chair, I like things to look old, when they are. I didn't know about putting the wax in a cloth, so thankyou for sharing. I'm always learning something new!
I have refinished Furniture most of my life I'm 55 years old and I've went every direction known to man I have used everything to get stuff off of the furniture but I have never seen a stripper work like that that's amazing I've always had to sand it off and the wood grain on that is absolutely fabulous and that is probably from the 1920s they do not make that kind of furniture anymore and yeah I know everything's disposable go figure I think you did a wonderful job and thank you for allowing me to watch your video God bless and have a wonderful day
I think you did a great job! I'm a big Bob Ross fan & a firm believer in "happy little accidents". What we think of as mistakes is what makes a piece unique. :-)
I have a set of three or four of these! I also don't have the heart to paint them. Thank you for the motivation to bump them up a bit on my project list. Yours turned out beautifully!!

Oh wow! So glad she restored it instead of taking it apart or slapping good ole contact paper over it.
I’m so glad you show the mistakes. It’s how we learn. 😉
Wow it looks nice! I love how you're showing mistakes so that we can learn from it!

Agreed! I know styles change but.....
Me too it drives me nuts to see people destroying vintages furnitures with chalk paint.
I found steel wool is very effective at getting "gunk" out of grooves. Makes things so much easier for sanding.
I love the way you explain exactly what you're doing, why you're doing it and what to watch out for.

love your honesty in showing your subscribers your mistakes. You continue to be my diy inspiration and my she-ro. Be blessed.

Thank you so much!!
Great project! 👍🏾 Thanks for including the "what not to do" portion as most won't show their mistakes.
Yes, sometimes we learn more from other's mistakes.

@@jacquelynnmartin omg for sure! She's amazing!
This is an interesting piece and I think it came out beautifully. It is unique and you did a great job bringing it back to life. Inspiring!

playing cards from an old deck of cards works good getting into crevices, awesome tips and the chair looks great!

Love your honesty about "how not to"...! In the end, I think this chair looks great!!

That chair! 😍😍 You did a great job refinishing it!
Excellent job! Imperfection = Character 😍
This was useful & satisfying to see the transformation. I appreciate your honesty & tips along the way too.
It turned out beautifully!
I really like this chair !!! I Love it so much !! The design, the wood, the colour... well done you my dear!
That's so true about having an idea of what you want to find. I was looking for a food processor and found one that day for $2.95!
Love the chair.❤️
That is a steal
Absolutely gorgeous!! Your work is always very well done!

I agree with you about wallpaper! Beautiful job on the chair - I am amazed at the variety of projects you tackle.
Phenomenal job! I learn so much from you. Can't wait for your podcast!
Good job, Serena! Turned out nicely. 👍
It still looks good even with what you said were mistakes. :) I'm so happy you didn't paint it either, that stain color looks great! Well done!
Nice work. And thanks for the tutorial!

I always love your tutorials. I learn so much.
So great that you showed that chair some love ;)
Beautiful. So glad you didn’t paint. It is such a pretty piece of furniture. Can’t wait to hear the podcast.
Love the chair!
Love your videos! Your not afraid to make mistakes, I think that’s what holds me back. I love audio books will definitely try this soon.

Awesome chair turned out GREAT!

Will you share the dimensions of the table please
That is a cool little chair!
Great job with redoing this chair.
Welcome to Brazil, by the way, the chair looks great. Have a safe trip.
Ah I love this video, and the wood is so beautiful when you've finished! ❤️
