Instead of an old X70 or Ricoh GR, get this! (Fuji X-M1 and 18mm 6.3 lens for small lo-fi cheap fun)

  • More fun with the smallest Fujifilm X-Trans interchangeable lens body - the X-M1. This time with the 7Artisans 18mm f6.3 lens. I've already covered this lens, but this is really where it shines. The X-M1 is near the same height and only a little wider than the Fujifilm X70 compact camera from a few years back. A camera with an 18.5mm lens on an APS-C X-Trans II Sensor. Those can still go for a good price these days. So what if you wanted a Fujifilm camera with that focal length (shared with the likes of the Ricoh GR series)? And pocketable? Well, one way to do it is with the old X-M1 body - an entry level body with an X-Trans I sensor, same as the X-Pro1 and X-E1. But much cheaper and smaller! And if you put the 7artisans 18mm f6.3 'UFO' lens on it - you effectively have a simple point and shoot camera for every day carry where a larger camera might not venture.
Now, this lens is simple - pan focus (everything is effectively in focus), fixed aperture. It's not much thicker than a Fujifilm body cap. You can easily slip this into most pockets. And it's more fun in most cases than a phone. The pictures have their own unique quality to them. They're not bad at all! Just a bit different sometimes. But this is a great lens to have when out and about in daylight.
And then unlike an X70 or other compact camera, you are not stuck with this lens.

Interesting review of the title XM1.. I have been rooting about looking for a small form factor always in your pocket camera and as a long time Fuji X user - I always regretted selling my Xpro and XT1 camera bodies -- and the XT1 in particular.. I did consider the XM1 and I was recently offered a very clean XT-1 body at the right money and I am very tempted to buy it .. I have the Fuji 27 pancake which is a cracking little lens and I note the XM1 is getting pricy .. I now shoot with XH-1 and I bought that camera body specifically to shoot with vintage lenses - the IBIS works its magic - greetings from Ireland

I find myself constantly tempted by the X-T1 myself, despite my preference for the rangefinder style bodies. The X-T1 is still so compact! And for a while it was crazy cheap though it seems prices (at least on sites like MPB) have ticked up again recently. I also find myself interested in the X-H1 and I really really love my other X-Trans III cameras and am drawn to the X-H1 for its looks (it feels more like an old-school medium format SLR with that big viewfinder faux-prism) and wanting that big body and IBIS for doing landscape/outdoor photography with big heavy zoom lenses that don't feel quite as at home on an X-Pro. But yes! It seems like all used Fuji camera prices have gone a bit crazy lately! Especially the rangefinder style bodies and it's kind of weird seeing that hit even the X-M1.

Hi! I just got my Fuji X M-1 last Sept. 1 2022. , as a gift for myself. Very good camera. a semi pro camera, that can be used for a point and shoot too. Liking the camera, coming from a full frame Nikon system. Small, light, easy to use, & also affordable. Thinking of getting your recommended lens, 7 Artisans 18mm. Thanks for your sharing experience.

X70 prices are sky high - so this is an excellent alternative

Enjoyed your review and I think I'll end up with an x M1. There's now a mark 2 version of the 7 artisans 18 mm out , so maybe I'll also get one . Thanks for the review.

dude... they're like $350-$450 dollars now. That's absurd for what this camera is and it's age. You can get an X-T1 for that price. (the silver ones are a little cheaper I noticed).

I use “expired eterna” recipe for X-Trans III cameras from the Fuji X Weekly. Provides a pseudo-eterna flat tone with a hint of purple for a mild “expired film” look

Hey Thankyou! I am totally getting this setup asap. Im an x pro 1 user with 7 artisans lenses but I wanted a smaller lomography inspired point and shoot for everyday. This is perfect and so affordable!! Do you have an Instagram for your photography?

Thank you! I did take this setup along on a recent trip and the images I got from it were very very once again very reminiscent of photos from my LC-A some 20 years back. I'm on Instagram as 'aodl' - instagram.com/aodl

1:50 LOL... not anymore. The silver ones (which for whatever reason are cheaper) in decent to good shape bottom out at the $250 area. The black ones are $350-$450 dollars which is absurd. You can get a used X-T1 for that. A far better camera with quicker focus, newer sensor, elec. viewfinder, etc etc. People be acting loco out there on ebay.

It's wild that these irrational prices have gotten to the X-M1. In some ways, I get it :it's got the sleek minimalist styles of the X-E4 (which itself is madly overpriced these days). But in other ways: the X-M1 missing so much of what I think of as the Fuji X charm! Its mode of operation (beyond just the PASM dial) is so different from my other Fujis.
