  • So after 5 years of ownership on my lovely vw t4 caravelle, I decided it was time to attempt to repair the rust on the drivers side rear sill and arch.
I have a few rust patches around the van to be getting on with and repairing, Some of the repairs will require to be welded and others may just get away with rubbing it back to fresh metal then painting and filling. I have a few patches around the windscreen and some down the sills. And maybe the arches to repair as well, but we will get to the rest of it in another video, today I'm just going to focus on the drivers side of the van.
So in this video I cut out all the metal that had bad corrosion at the front lower section of the arch where it meets the sill. I treated the rest of the rust on the arch with rust off 'v. After rust treatment I etch primed the bare metal then with filler and high build primer i managed to get it all nice and smooth before spraying the red base coat LB3Y followed by clear coat. All thats left to do is allow the fresh paint to dry before polishing to blend the clear coat.
All of the paint I have used is from automotive paint supplies here in Southampton. The staff are very friendly and helpful and were able to meet my every need. Visit www.automotive... and become lost in a world of paints, fillers, and tools, some of which you would never know existed.

Do you weld the pieces with the primer on or do you grind the edge or something before? I am looking to do this on my own T4 in the near future and wondering what the best practice is. I'd imagine that the weld would be contaminated by it, but it also probably doesent matter since its not structural. Could you perhaps explain the reasoning?
    Your repair looks great, btw!

Any metal that is behind another piece of metal I use etch primer. I use zinc primer for areas that are being welded as zinc primer activates with the heat. The weld isn’t contaminated and the primer acts like a flux when it’s hot and will burn away just leaving primer around the weld.

Forgot to say new logo is great, but maybe without the exhaust smoke, looks like another engine rebuild on the cards.....👍😀

Thanks for the feedback, I can change that 👍 the only rebuild I want is for a performance build of 200+bhp 😂

Thanks buddy, only rattle cans, but I got the paint mixed up at my local paint supplies, it’s polyester base with clear lacquer.
