The mid-90s was probably the period in recent history when popular music tastes were most different between the USA and the UK. Pop and Rock ('Britpop') stayed huge in Britain while Grunge was all the rage across the Atlantic.

Youthful exuberance is right lol. Alright was their biggest hit, but they were only like 18 here & it's a pretty poppy track. Personally, I like their later stuff better; which is some of the best of the Britpop genre IMO. It's a shame they never broke it in the US, as they are uber-talented. Brilliant song writers and so original with their song structure, chord changes and they're very Beatles-influenced. Would love to see you guys check out Richard III, Late In the Day or Moving ✌

Britpop is the new wave of new wave. '90s, '00s was its peak. British alternative music. Its' kind of Beatles inspired rock, too. Some psychedelic/shoegazy, pop-rock, indie pop, punk rock influence, new wave/post-punk influenced some synthy, etc. Britpop bands like The Verve, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp, Suede, Elastica, Travis, Coldplay, Supergrass, My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses, Jesus and Mary Chain, Lush, Slowdive, Stereophonics, Feeder, Bloc Party, Artic Monkeys, PJ Harvey, Republica, etc
Also, many people have been listening to music from the UK for years, decades past and present. Lots of influences, too.
Many American bands for example: Metallica (especially early Metallica) was inspired by older UK punk rock and NWOBM (New wave of British metal). No Doubt was inspired by ska-punk from UK bands and new wave/post-punk, synthy. The Killers are inspired from new wave/post-punk, some synthy. Interpol is inspired from UK post-punk/darkwave gothy bands like Joy Division, same for Yeah Yeah Yeahs (from Sioxsee and the Banshees, The Cure, etc). Santigold inspired from a lot of new wave/post-punk UK bands. Green Day (especially early Green Day) inspired from older British punk rock Also some rappers and R&B artists influenced by some UK music. And many more other examples. .
Next for Supergrass yall should check out videos "Pumping on Your Stereo", "Richard III", "Sun Hits the Sky", "Grace", etc Songs from the '90s and '00s.
Funny yall mentioned Madness "Our House" They were a very fun influential new wave/post-punk, ska band from the late '70s, '80s and early '90s. Also from the UK.

This is from the height of 'Britpop' where Indie became more commercial than ever before, up to this point Indie music was always coined as 'Alternative' music and even had its own chart, magazines and radio station slots, even its own midweek slot at most nightclubs, these guys would have grown up with post-punk, mod revival (Our House - as you point out) and 80's Indie/Alternative which was their main influence, this was a great fun band, great to dance to, they'll never be revered as one of the greats, but no one can ever argue that they weren't FUN!
