To he fair. The ps2 had games made on it longer than. The ps3-5. The last ps2 game was made in 2014. The last ps3 game was released in 2013. The last ps4/5 games were released in... error data not found.
It doesn't seem like much today, but I remember back during the wait for KH2 everyone thought 4 years was an impossibly long time to wait for a numbered sequal

Honestly, it would be a really cool fangame if somebody took KH2’s engine to create a “demake” of KH3. That would be so fascinating to see.

And KH has one of the best art direction on the ps2

Kingdom Hearts 3 on the PS3 would have made a big splash and be remembered among the other great icons of gaming trilogies, such as Mario 3, Spyro 3, Halo 3 or even Metal Gear Solid 3.
This is actually an interesting thought experiment. What WOULD Kingdom Hearts 3 have looked like if it came out on the PS2. Well, first, we'd have to consider the timing. If it came out JUST after the PS3 came out, that would mean the game would release, at the earliest, somewhere between early to mid 2007. Which means that there'd be no Tangled, Frozen, or Big Hero 6 worlds, no Ratatouille mechanics, and now Wreck-It Ralph summon because those movies didn't exist yet. Also, depending on the release, Disney would have just acquired Pixar. So Toy Story and Monsters Inc probably would have been off the table. That just leaves us with just Hercules, Pirates Of The Caribbean, and Winnie The Pooh. Not exactly the most expansive game in the series, is it? Let's fill it up with new worlds! First, since Disney had recently acquired The Muppets around that time, let's have a Muppet world. Either based on The Muppet Show for a world within a world, or a world based on The Muppet Movie. Next up, each mainline Kingdom Hearts game introduces at least one new type of world. For KH1, it was hand drawn Disney movies and stop-motion Disney movies. For KH2, it was live-action Disney movies, DTV animated Disney movies, and Disney shorts. For the actual KH3, it was CGI Disney movies and Pixar movies. But for our KH3, they should introduce worlds based on Disney's TV cartoons. And when it comes to Disney's TV cartoons from the 2000's, none are more suited for Kingdom Hearts than Kim Possible. Next up, this game needs, what I like to call, a "Tron Effect" world. A world based on a forgotten Disney movie that gets a massive boost in popularity thanks to Kingdom Hearts. And for our hypothetical PS2 KH3, I think it should be Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Partially because it would make for an awesome Kingdom Hearts world, but mostly because I REALLY like it. Also Treasure Planet, and MAYBE The Emperor's New Groove. Next up, just because it's the only non-sequel Disney renaissance movie that hasn't come to Kingdom Hearts, we'd get a world based on Pocahontas. And lastly, just because it was a big hit for Disney at the time, we'd get a world based on National Treasure.
I was having some of the same ideas! I’d be extremely curious about the Pixar situation, since (from my understanding) Disney still worked very closely with them at the time, Nomura wanted Pixar in KH from the beginning, and there’s those unused early models of Woody and Buzz in KH2.

Disney didn't make the film part 3 with Nicholas Cage, only One Season series for Disney Plus), Treasure Planet, Atlantis world and Vaiana/Moana would be great (but all that will have to wait till KHIV (even after the coming soon release of next film Moana/Vaiana 2...)
I think it would also be interesting to consider what worlds and characters KH3 would include had it released on PS2. Tangled, Frozen and Big Hero 6 obviously wouldn’t be options, so what might replace them?
Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet might’ve had a better chance at representation then!
That plus give me a proper version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame world
Where we actually get Quaismodo and Captain Pheobus as party members
And we actually get to fight Frollo as a proper boss fight this time (Instead of fighting a Candy Rainbow Fruit Bat)

It would be a really good game but done properly except it’s on budget. Could have more worlds and a deeper story for BBS. We would probably have Lightning as a guest character from ff13 and a secret boss fight of noctis already
Or imagine if ff13 never came out then ff7 remake would be made on ps2 already and now we would have a bunch of advent children games now

If Kingdom Hearts 3 came out on the PS2 back in 2008, we wouldn’t have frozen in the game. No tangled, big hero 6, wreck-it Ralph aa a summon even! We’d still have Hercules, Toy Story and Monsters Inc of course but Pirates of the Caribbean at world’s end came out the year before in 2007 so it’s very hard to tell what they world roster for KH3 would’ve been back then. To no one’s surprise at all.

I play KH1 and KH2 always with a CRT Filter, the Program i use is called ShaderGlass and you can set up a multitude of CRT Monitor Filters and adjust them. I was able to recreate the exact CRT Monitor i used as a Kid to play Ps2 games. It rounds it up and gives you this little extra nostalgic feeling if you don't own a real CRT Monitor anymore.

I hate to be contrarian but this looks literally nothing like a PS2 game, it just likes a PS4 game with the graphical settings turned to minimum and a bunch of high constrast filters and black bars thrown over it. I was hoping this would be like a mod showcase with imported assets from the first two games or something but like... it just looks like early beta footage of KH3 or something.
agreed. this looks nothing like a ps2 game, it instead looks like a modern game in very early development.
i don’t think porting assets from the previous games is possible considering 3 and the older games run on completely different engines.
the closest we have to ps2 kh3 is sora’s kh3 model in melody of memory (final boss).

To this day, the PS2 style is gorgeous. Even if they stick with the Unreal engine, I hope they still make smaller titles that still make use of the PS2 engine like they did with Melody of Memories. Especially if the smaller titles don't take so hecking long to make!

Not long after finishing KH2, I remember reading somewhere back then we would get a game based off Roxas, Xehanort and some 3rd kind of game. Its been a long time. I don't recall where I read it. With the release of 358/2 Days in the late 2000s, I assumed KH3 would be an early 2010s release on PS3. I always wondered what a PS3 numbered title would have looked like.
Before saying anything I’d like to clarify that this comment is a personal opinion.
That being said, if KH3 was released earlier on the ps2, most definitely it would have had better writing.
It would've been fantastic if Kingdom hearts 3 released on the ps2 or ps3, but it did'nt happen and I accepted that reaility as the game was finally being shown off. I'm happy with the Kingdom Hearts 3 we did get and thankfully their wasting no time with Kingdom Hearts 4 so I've got a good feeling that will be what some people were expecting from Kingdom hearts 3. As Osaka is still the ones working on the game and their using the same engine meaning they have tons of assets now to use. And it's clear to me they have a desire to keep pushing themselves.
Remember when we thought Birth by sleep was Kh3?
i think this video goes to show just how important *lighting* is to a visual medium. even when the textures are reduced, if the lighting remains the same it can still look *gorgeous* in comparison to something with the same textures and bad lighting.

Thought I’m sure it would probably take months or even a few years, I would like to see some dedicated modders try to rework everything in the game and basically polygonify all of the worlds and character models to replicate the original kingdom hearts visual style.
Looks interesting! I agree with Cynical that it more looks like an unfinished game than a PS2 game though. I bet with the in-game graphics setting turned down to the lowest settings and the Vita resolution mod, it would look as close as it realistically would get.

For a franchise that is doing a TERRIBLE job keeping its players up to date on the status of its installments, you've somehow managed to keep content coming- like literally rolling up the tube of toothpaste to get a drop of anything! If nobody else appreciates it, I do.

It probably couldn’t have released on PS2 because BBS was planned to be the next PS2 game. And BBS’s ending teased a BBS Vol 2 which would have set up the story of the TRUE KH3. But maybe BBS and BBS Vol 2 would have been covered in one game if it had been on PS2?
Either way, I think the TRUE KH3 would have come out on PS3 at the earliest. As for content, it would have focused more on Xehanort. We would have still had Leonard Nimoy as Master Xehanort. Shimomura would probably have been able to do more than 25% of the OST. As for the world list, I think we would have had a list very similar to DDD with a few new additions.
I think Toy Story was a given, Hawaii for Lilo and Stitch, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Fantasia, Aladdin King of Thieves, Pirates 2, and possibly either Atlantis or Treasure Planet.
Atlantis stood a pretty decent chance imo. The only thing is it might have been confusing if Leonard Nimoy was playing two roles in the game.
Fun to think about. Sad, too, but mostly fun.
Instead of wondering... why don't we just take the ps2 to its maximum potential without modding it in order to make a fan made version of KH3 that we actually want. So basicly kh3D re-remix
No joke? With the low rez textures, settings and vita resolution only... that might look like a pretty legit ps3 version.
Optimally, Birth by Sleep should've been a native PS3 project handled by the KH2 dev team.
Could've had the KH2 combat system and bosses with some larger hub worlds thanks to the extra processing power.
And capes, of course. On PS3, the Keyblade armour sets would've kept the capes.
For any mad modders, there's totally an official PS2-esque model of Kh3 Sora in Melody of Memories they can use to at least recreate a kh3 world in the old engine.

I've asked myself a similar question for the FF7R games.
What if FF7R had been released on the PS3? I imagine the story would have been more faithful to the original, with no multiverse timelines or dementor ghosts. The battle system probably would have been similar to FF13. I also expect Tifa, Barret's and Aerith's outfits would have been more identical to their original counterparts.

All this does is confirm that KH3 could have worked on Nintendo Switch but Square Enix chose to be lazy with cloud servers.

We had that conversation years ago when Square fucked up their PS3 generation by investing in in house engines that weren't finished yet were being used to make games. They took the KH1/2 team to help out with those projects and so they couldn't even make a KH3 back then. It was impossible due to their fuckups.

If Kingdom Hearts 3 was released on ps2 they would had focus on 2D Disney characters rather 3D characters. Hopefully Kingdom Hearts 4 will have a balance of 2D and 3D Disney characters.

you're not gonna achieve it just by making the graphics worse through mods, especially with kh1 and kh2 because they're where the exact opposite of blurry textures thanks to it's simplicity and solid colors, its not about making the game worse its about understanding the style that the developers made with the tools of that generation. Maybe changing the resolution like at the end of the video, removing some lightning effects and with a texture pack(idk if kh3 can use custom texture packs) it's more possible to get a ps2 vibe.

What if KH2 was release for the PS3 instead of PS2? Each Kingdom Hearts franchise release on the next gen console. KH1 was on PS2, KH3 was release for the PS4, and KH4 will be releasing for the PS5. Notice in those orders each Kingdom Hearts main series was relase to the newer console with the exception of KH2 and KH2 Final Mix was release after the PS3 console was release. so hypothetically KH2 was suppose to be exclusive on the PS3 console

It's not a proper PS2 KH release unless it has the shiny box art.
You might be able to find a mod that works for 4:3 (e.g. something like an ultrawide mod might also work for 4:3)
Shouldn't even be a wonder. It was kinda always aimed to be a ps3 release which didn't even come to fruition.
