  • How Car Exhausts Make Crackles & Pops - Anti-Lag or Fake Sounds?
    Are exhaust pops as bad as speaker sounds, geared CVTs, fake aero?
    Veloster N vs Miata: Most Fun? - • Veloster N vs. 2019 Mi...
    How do car exhausts make crackles and pops, and are these noises real or fake? Depending on the car, whether it's a Toyota Supra, Jaguar F-Type R, or Ford Mustang, the answer can be very different. The Hyundai Veloster N, for example, has an anti-lag system that causes those beautiful crackles & pops.
    If a feature isn't functional and done for subjective benefit, does that make it fake? Are "geared" CVTs fake? Is fake aero acceptable? Is engine noise piped in through speakers acceptable? In this video we'll break down how exhaust crackles are made, and whether or not car enthusiasts should support this approach towards performance cars.

      ICo Hi, tx!
      Yes, I get that people have to get used to it but that’s just what it is. A CVT enables the engine run at its optimal speed all the time. By adding artificial gears, that advantage is ruined and defies the whole purpose of a CVT. It’s a pitty the majority of the people don’t understand this and ‘want to hear it shift’.
      From the manufacturers point of view: if you let the CVT imitate gears, why not install a regular gearbox then?

      Its funny tho how EE says cvts started faking gears, when one of the first cvts - my 2001 audi a4 multitronic already did that and new cars started not having simulated gears

    • @meegstomtom

      @@zDemoGODz the cvt trans is much older then that. Really old snowmobiles use a cvt trans. Heck even some old mini bikes did. Most go carts do. The theory is there. Those old ones wouldn't handle the power but the operation is there.

      Yes it’s mind blowing, people want their geared cars to have so smooth of shifting (like on luxury cars, really using that torque converter and soft shift kits), but the wanting a jerking whiplash with literally the transmission that is designed to be smooth... Well, maybe they just need to ride with me to decide they don’t want whiplash, because that’s about how I shift my gears...

  • @Slider68
    @Slider68 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Hi Jason, you didn't mention a couple of things.
    1. Historically pops and crackles used to occur due to the way a carburetor's venturi used to suck up excess fuel during throttle off engine rpm reductions. The excess fuel would cause such poor fuel combustion during engine deceleration that unburnt fuel and oxygen would ignite in the exhaust. You could lean out the idle fuel mixture to get rid of the pops, but the extra richness both helps with post shift throttle response and idle quality. Many sports cars from the 60's and 70's would pop and crackle during spirited driving gear shifts (manual transmission). Race cars with fast shifting transmissions had a different reason for their cracks and pops and this was due to how the ignition would be temporarily shut off during gear shifts, while the carburetor would still allow fuel and oxygen to be pumped through the engine (igniting in the exhaust).
    2. When it comes to CVTs you might be surprised to find out that locking the gear ratio as often as possible and "faking" gear shifts actually improves efficiency of the CVT. This is due to the fact that there is additional friction and slippage whenever the belt/chain/cone/etc. is sliding up or down and changing gear ratios. Whenever the CVT remains at a fixed ratio, the lack of sliding improves the energy transfer efficiency (gains of more than 10% can be experienced during acceleration). Manufacturers looking for maximum efficiency have to balance the improvements locking the CVT to a constant ratio provides with the loss of efficiency resulting from operating the engine at a non-optimal rpm. Programming the CVT to "fake" between 6 and 10 gear ratios often provides the best efficiency overall. One additional challenge that this approach can cause is grooves wearing in the CVT sheaves. To work around this manufacturers often program CVTs to slightly vary the fixed gear ratios used from acceleration cycle to acceleration cycle.

I did an airaid cold air intake, and borla exhaust along with a custom staggered wheel setup. It sounds good, drives good, and gets surprisingly good gas milage for a v8 with a 6 speed manual. I average about 24-25mpg with normal driving, and if I baby it I can push close to 30mpg. My next steps are a ported intake manifold, and potentially porting the valves, also want to grab a ported throttle body. But as it sits now I dyno'd 426 at the wheels.

Mercedes made a design on their F1 car called "Dual-Action Steering" that made telescoping the steering wheel actively change the toe angle of the front wheels. The drivers learned to adopt it because it was faster, even tho it wasn't easy. I see no reason why a kind of "manual CVT" wouldn't be MORE difficult than a standard manual gearbox. If a talented driver can drive an 8 speed manual like a finely tuned piano than I'd love to see how they perform on a "Violin". "CVT's are boring!" he said as the whole field screamed by at racing engines that have been red-line....for the last 4 laps. I remember how "cute" and "boring" turbos were...until they were fast.

      Ah, I was posting the same thought. I wondered if it was a fad so owners get that Nitrous-burning Japanese car effect from the movies; imaging flames from the exhaust. I still wonder if it shortens valve or cat-conv life (the latter especially in non-turbo models).

    • @mnxs
      @mnxs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikep490it shouldn't lower the life of either valves or cat. Since the majority of the burning happens in the exhaust, I'd expect the exhaust gas/charge as it leaves the cylinder to be either colder or at least somewhat the same temperature in total, so the valve should be fine.
      For the cat, it actually often (usually?) has elements in its chemistry that promotes retention of some of the excess oxygen that passes through for use later, indeed so that a sudden inflow of rich/unburnt fuel can still be handled.
      In either case, it's very temporary, so not something that should overload either component.

    And my Triumph Speed Triple makes the hands down world's best off-throttle crackle with an Arrow exhaust and a tune.

    Interesting. I'd like to know if the cracks and pops can happen "naturally" when an engine is revved high (especially higher performance engines). My suspicion is that as soon as you let off the throttle, there is still unspent fuel in the cylinder being post-ignited due to high compression, heat, fuel mixture, etc. I'm inclined to think that this might happen (or is more likely to happen) with high-octane fuel (and thus higher performance engines) due to the longer-burning properties of the fuel.

      At the start of the month i visited an event with old cars driving on a racetrack (newest car was from 82) and lots of those old cars had crackles and pops. None of them had a modern enough ignition to do what Jason explained in the video. Unless someone would change ignition timing mechanically when the driver gets off the throttle. (which i doubt because the car wouldn't run on idle and it would mean lot's of work and finding something that can do that for no purpose whatsoever.)

    • @Game-The-System
      @Game-The-System 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nirfz True. I'd imagine that the cracks and pops on older cars are due to the fact that most carburetors are fairly inefficient compared to fuel injection. Just spitballing, and now that I think about it...letting off the throttle quickly after a high rev in any set up will likely cause a rich mixture for a moment or two. In turn, the conditions are ripe for those cracks and pops early in the exhaust system.

    It was my understanding that crackles and pops are caused by the temperature difference of exhaust and outside air. Also its more common with a wider diameter exhaust because when letting off the throttle, much less gasses are being forced out and outside air is so much colder that it causes expansion of the hot gasses inside the exhaust system. I was surprised they didn't talk about this but maybe both are true?

    🧐 Two important ideas were overlooked in this video 🧐
    1. There is another type of crackle & pop that naturally occurs in cars running a rich A/F ratio. In this case, timing isn't delayed, & the exhaust valve isn't left open. Instead, because there is excess gasoline that isn't burnt, it ignites in the exhaust manifold when it comes in contact with atmospheric pressure & temperature. In my opinion, this is the best type of pop & crackle! Unlike the burble-tunes, it's unpredictable, which adds to the fun. The, legendary, Ferarri F40 is an excellent example of this!
    2. Another pro of leaving the exhaust valve open on deceleration is that the additional flow of air and fuel into the exhaust manifold warms the catalytic converter quicker!

      It’ll sometimes do that even without closing the throttle completely to make the shift quickly. When the DSG requests a shift, it happens so quickly that closing the throttle and waiting for the intake to empty, letting the turbo slowing down makes it feel slower, and the shift would take longer. So the timing retard happens for a few strokes as the clutches swap during the shift. Actually the fuel doesn’t necessarily cut fuel because that makes NOx emissions harder to control, a fuel cut fills the catalyst with oxygen and it will take several seconds to get NOx emissions to spike a lot. After fuel return the ECM needs to run rich for a bit until the catalyst is back to normal, so within the constraints of emissions it may make sense to leave the fuel on.

    The Porsche anti-lag system works, as you say by keeping the throttle open but cutting of the fuel on lift off. HOWEVER with the sports exhaust in Sport mode (but not in normal or Sport +) they, effectively disable the anti lag and use the Veloster approach to get the pops and crackles. I have to say that does rather offend my engineering sensibilities.

    Porsche’s gas pedal is also to control the amount of fuel that it’s being injected into the cylinders besides controlling the amount of air just like in the Diesel engine where you only control the amount of fuel that you’re injecting into the cylinders by pressing the gas pedal. That’s how diesel throttling works. And Petrol throttling works by controlling the amount of air going to the cylinders by pressing the gas pedal and opening the throttle body. So Porsche decided to use the gas pedal as control both air and fuel as well like in the diésel engine.

    I have a 1990 Miata with a Megasquirt ECU in it, and over the summer I played with the tune to see if I could get some nice pops and bangs out of it. To do it, I picked a few cells in the spark table where load was low and RPMs were high and set the spark timing to -5 degrees - that is, 5 degrees AFTER TDC, and added some extra fuel in those cells as well. The extra unburned fuel and fresh air in the exhaust stream allowed for some pretty nice pops. I'm not sure if there's a way to tweak spark timing based on TPSdot, but that is probably how it's implemented in production cars. I also own a 2017 Focus RS, and it gives off pops and bangs pretty consistently in sport mode with that pattern of throttle input.

      On a SUD it's the carbies loading the inlet runner walls with liquid fuel at high load. Quick throttle lift and you now have very low air flow but still have all that extra liquid fuel. The mixture spikes rich for a moment, way beyond what the timing advance and low energy ignition can ignite properly.

    Interestingly I have a carburated motorcycle and it does pop and crackle a lot (like all carburated motorcycles and most cars). Basically every time you are not on the throttle the thing pops like crazy. It gets less if you turn down the idle speed. The reason why it pops and crackles is because the carburators always draw a small bit of air and fuel into the cylinder because the throttle never fully closes because of well... idle. Some interesting observations I made are: when I turn down idle all the way the thing obviously won't pop anymore on decelleration but will also not run if you stop. However, if you roll on the throttle really gently say for example at full lean at an apex, most of the time it does one loud bang, followed by a bunch of crackles that get less the more throttle you apply until they are completely gone at about 2% throttle and the engine sounds like a normal engine under load. The loud bang at the beginning is probably because the carbs are still not fully closed and draw in a tiny amount of air and fuel that is to little to get ignited but that collects in the exhaust and when you open the throttle it ignites all that unburned mixture in the exhaust. However, I am honestly not totally sure why it pops and crackles other than that. Is it because it also draws in to little mixture to properly ignite it but "once in a while" a piston does properly ignite and then burns the mixture of the other cylinders in the exhaust?

    My motorcycle does that. In my case, it's due to secondary air injection. The purpose is to help burn any unburned fuel in the exhaust for emissions. Actually pops flames out the back. Cross plane inline 4 with that crackle/pop is like heaven in your ears.

    I love the cracks and pops. Not only do I love the sound now and then, I also find it useful for example, when someone is on my tail or driving too close behind me and not letting up, I will switch my BMW X3 M40i into Sport Plus mode and let off a barrage of pops and crackles like warning shots and without fail, they back up. So I think sometimes, it can be useful in a way.

    Hello from PCNA
    The Porsche cars with the Sports setting turned on and the Exhaust valves open do indeed produce pops and crackles when letting off the gas. The crackles and pops do not occur outside of sports mode. I'm not sure if this applies to the NA vehicles but for the Turbo vehicles this does apply

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baron von Teuchter well I think that sound or the throttle cut isn’t necessary, but manufacturers use various methods such as cutting spark while keeping the injectors firing to produce the sound now associated with such shifting. Some cars don’t do that, and I recall Jason’s 720s acceleration video where the car doesn’t make that iconic sound.

    I bought an nSRT-4 right out of University back in 2004 - it burbled & popped, first couple seconds off-throttle. It also did WOT b00st-hold between gears. That Jag definitely WASN’T the first *production* car to ‘make noise’ off-throttle.
    I’m sure the SRT-4 wasn’t first either (I still have the car BTW, and it’s still a riot!) “The First” was likely some older, spicy carbureted model - and anybody’s guess.

      No expert here, but shouldn't be "shooting flames" most of the time. This situation only occurs for a brief instant when you let off the throttle. Any manufacturer "blipping" the fuel to create added pressure in the exhaust (and thus the turbo) will certainly have built the turbo to handle it.

    Crackles and pops are fundamental in modern cars, especially when downsizing left a lot of fun cars with 4 or even 3 pot engines that without some "fakery" either in the engine or in the exhaust make up for that lack of engine noise, especially combined with modern particulate filters
