One of the first things I learned from my Uncle Gus was check the grounds. He was a truck driver but also a pretty good mechanic. He drove for a trucking company that had a truck that had been in the shop for a month with numerous electrical issues. He kept telling them that there was a ground problem and they kept telling him he didn't know what he was talking about. Finally they told him if he thought he was so smart, fix the truck. He took the main ground wire off the frame cleaned it and put it back on, truck was fixed!
That was simple fix. Like he said all 4 wires or or coils going bad at same time highly unlikely. Nit impossible but just very improbable. Plus gm doesn't manufacture vehicles designed for the rust belt and Roberts your fathers Brother it's a bad ground.
Hi, I'm the proud owner of a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali. I lost the whole left cylinder bank last night. I live in the Netherlands and the AAA, which is called ANWB, doesn't know anything about US cars. So there I was in the middle of nowhere with this rough idling car and all kinds of codes in my screen...and than I found this TH-cam video that told me exactly how to fix it! Man, I'm so grateful for your help. Can't thank you enough. Car is driving smooth again and it took ten minutes and a piece of wire...so again, thanks!
My 08 sierra has been skipping so bad could t drive checked finally yesterday found it was entire rt bank. .watched this video fixed it in 1 day because hard to get to .Didn't want to rig.left bank quit 6 Mos ago.cost mu 400 to have fix .If they had fix both wires I wouldn't had this problem yesterday
Eric, you are so fast, it's mind boggling, I had the exact same issue on a GMC pick-up only 3 days ago. My customer was told by a dealer that he needed a new computer! It's a good thing he decided to take it to me. It took me about an hour, but I used the same process.
So the dealer diagnoses a faulty computer when it's really just a bad ground wire. The only thing that surprises me about this? Is how supposedly "qualified" people can be so incompetent/crooked/pick one.
@@JohnnyTalia pretty common, they would swap the part, find it still doesn't fix the problem, find the ground wire, and then continue to tell the customer the ground came off, fried the computer, and charge them half the value of the vehicle.

Had a Wire Gremlin , Ghostly , Phantom issue in a friends 1994 Chevy 6.5L turbo diesel. Started looking at around dusk and was quit dark when i opened the hood. There was an strange orange glow coming from behind the head at the fire wall. Mind you i had turned all a/c full and headlights and everything power hungry on before i opened the hood. A single copper ground strap attached to the motor and firewall was glowing red enough to cook on. All 4 of the other grounds were totally corroded away. And with a mechanical fuel pump it didnt need spark. BTW the fuel bowl was just in front of it! Could have been a fire!!!
I am glad to see you fixed it right and didn’t just run a jumper to ground. That is a hack repair that often can cause unintended consequences. Almost always better to find the root problem and fix it correctly. Nice work.
You saved my life man was working for the last two days replaced coils, spark plugs, fuel filter, back and forth to the store then I seen you test by bypassing the ground to the connected I tried it and it was my issue now it’s fixed THANKYOU

Did anyone notice the rust and corruption under that hood? There's not much any design engineer can do when road salt is trying to return your vehicle to ore again.
You're a brave man, pulling that engine cover right off.. if it was me the heater core quick connectors would have immediately broke especially with rear heat LOL.
YOU WERE 110% CORRECT...THAT WAS MY EXACT ISSUE AND YOUR FIX.... FIXED IT!!!!! I have changed and added addtional grounds to the trany alternator engine etc. a year or so ago....but not this one. A grouind was also my problem back then with harrd trany shifting changing/fixing those fixed that problem. Thanks for this video. No one else mebtioned it...they went right to the cat as the culprit and that would have been around 2 grand to fix.
AWESOME! You just helped me fix my truck, as it had the EXACT same problem with G102 except on Bank 2 (2-4-6-8). In my case the voltage between the black ground wire in the coilpack connector and B+ was 4.9V. I unscrewed the ground stud from the block and separated the eyelets. Then I bent the wires leading into one eyelet, and the eyelet fell off! That was the one that has both coilpack grounds crimped into one eyelet. The problem throws you at first because long-term fuel trim goes to 99% and it sets a lean code, yet the exhaust smells like raw fuel. The lack of spark on one bank dumps both raw fuel and unburned oxygen out of the exhaust manifold, making the O2 sensor read lean.
You saved me again Eric! My GMC just lost the spark to all of the drivers side cylinders today. Thanks to you I now know exactly what to look for and how to fix it! Thank you Eric!!

Just a quick THANK YOU! This video saved me a major headache this past weekend. I was about 300 miles from home with my 05 Suburban and it started misfiring. I had my wife and two dogs with me so breaking down on the side of the road was bad timing for sure. I had a scanner with me and I was getting a p0200 and p0300. I got on TH-cam and went to your channel because I have watched many of your videos. You showed in your video an 08 Suburban with the broken ground wires for one bank of injectors, I quickly found my o5 had that exact issue. I put new wire ends on and moved the ground to a better spot up on the alternator bracket. It fixed the two errors have stopped and the truck now runs better than ever, it had also been hesitating when accelerating but this also fixed that issue. Thank you for saving me from having to get towed and an expensive car rental. South Main Auto is awesome!
No such thing as boring videos. You’re entertaining no matter what. Gotta be time for a classic brake job or a bearing video with exploding hub tamer. Keep up the great work bud.
I had a Suburban in the shop today (November 24), customer was complaining about “shaking, stabilitrack light on , and C.E.L lashing). Codes: P0352, P0354, P0356, and P0358, hard misfires on 2, 4, 6,and 8 cylinders. The entire bank. I thought “Why does this sound familiar?” Entire bank gone.... Suburban......even the paint color was the same! I gave the ground wires a wiggle and then tried to start the car: both banks were now out. New wires and an eyelet fixed the issue. Thanks for uploading this vid before Thanksgiving!
We’ve had a couple of Chevy box vans loose a whole bank. Turns out the fuse box was getting the green death and dropping power to the fuse that feeds a bank of injectors. Ended up just replacing the fuse box on them since it was all going green.
Not boring, Eric. It serves to reinforce the fact that if you live in an area that has a lot of moisture, salt or even worse both, you can bet that you're going to have heavy corrosion, and generally the first things that are eaten are the soft metals (copper, brass, aluminum, ect.). The best way to avoid corrosion issues in my opinion is Fluid Film and more Fluid Film. So many bad things occur because of bad or nonexistent grounds (generally left unprotected except for paint which is sometimes easily defeated). Great vid, Eric! 👍

Eric, that certainly is NOT boring. It is highly educational, especially to the likes of myself who knows old-style spark systems, but hasn't much of a clue with these new fangled ones.
I had one today on a Tahoe no ground on 1-3-5-7 also...done a ground 101 ..and she fired on all 8...watch your video last night to find a bad ground...thank Yu for your intel
Never boring, Eric. Once had a Fire Dept Tahoe that was eating cats... not my diag there. When it got dumped on me, I found an intermittent wire in that harness connecting the coils (bank 1). Those Fire boys do run hard and when that B+ would drop out, that cat wasn't long for the world. Was glad to put an end to that.
Never a boring video. These are the types of repairs us common folk would get stumped on. (At least the ones that haven't watched your channel enough).
Yep, luv me sum SMA!! Another perfect example of E’s awesome diagnostic skills. NEVER BORING, ALWAYS entertaining and informative. It just does not get better than this on ALL of TH-cam.
I love seeing the electrical diagnostic no matter how "boring". I've been lucky enough to never have those kind of problems so my knowledge is limited. I get smarter with every video!
I don’t know if you still check comments on this video, but thank you so much! My wife’s 07 Tahoe’ entire drivers side bank went out, and I couldn’t figure it out. Ran a jumper from the black on the harness like you did, and as soon as I ground the jumper, all 8 fired. I changed the ground on the block by the power steering pump, but that didn’t do it, so I just cut the black about 4 inches from the harness and put a barrel connector in line with an addition ground wire coming out one end. Put an eye terminal on the new ground and ran it to a bold on the alternator bracket, and now she purrs like a kitten. Thank you!
I'll watch what you call simple videos all day long, because it is the process you use to diagnose easy and complicated problems that interests me. Not to mention the more problems I watch you fix will make it that much easier for me to recognize when I run across a similar issue. Thanks for showing.
Had one with the same issue just on the passenger side. The video helped a lot, this one had high resistance so it didn't take the whole bank down right away but after 30 seconds they all misfired
Thank you so much just fixed my 09 chevy 5.3 after going to 2 different mechanics and spending 1200 on useless plugs and wires and coil packs. You figured it out thanks bro
The straight forward ones are good training in the process. And the process is vital when you hit a difficult diagnosis. Today we learned, stop, think about what's in common before you start moving things about. If you can keep your head when all those around you are losing there, you'll solve the problem faster in the long run.
I feel like it's been years since I heard someone say World Wide Web. But hey, I enjoyed the video! It's nice when the standard procedure brings quick results!
Thank you brother. Had an issue for the last couple days Both of my banks were missing bad under load. had enough to start the truck but that was about it. Move the ground up and put new eye and all is good now!
I was having this same exact issue. I replaced wires, coils, and plugs. Found your video and this was my problem! THANK YOU🙌👏. I was getting frustrated haha.
-- 2004 Tahoe here. Went all through the grounds when I first bought it for a winter beater. Also in another life I was a car audio installer: Simply put, you can never have too many grounds. I always double them up when I can.
Where wer you two years ago? My son's Suburban was missfiring and stopping so it was retired and replaced. I started to work on it and eventually found a missing ground for the coils, once I provided it with a good ground it started running lke new. Thankfully he was able to then sell it. Enjoy your videos.
Thank you for this video. I cleaned the ground wire and power to Bank 1 returned, idele stablilized and the furmes went away. Also recent error codes affecting both knock sensors went away. My kid is even happier because now we can play xbox together instead of me troubleshooting a vehicle today.
It's always good to see simple applied logic in action. I'm fortunate to have a shop which works in a similar way in the next village. I've been using them for 15 years and wouldn't dream of going to a main dealer, even with a new car. We are fortunate that in Europe a manufacturer's warrantee can't be voided because the vehicle has been serviced by somebody else, so long as genuine parts have been used. Keep up the good work.

Eric, that certainly is NOT boring. It is highly educational, especially to the likes of myself who knows old-style spark systems, but hasn't much of a clue with these new fangled ones.
Hardly boring. Educational, instructional and informative. You da man!!
Always enjoy your videos. I hope the SMA family has a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Eric!!! You're my Hero. I couldn't find G102. You saved me tons of time and stress. Love your channel! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks for watching thanks for being there.
Yep, luv me sum SMA!! Another perfect example of E’s awesome diagnostic skills.
NEVER BORING, ALWAYS entertaining and informative. It just does not get better than this on ALL of TH-cam.
So many issues caused by bad grounds on ALL chevys....well all cars. No ground, no worky. Nice video
Common sense is never boring! Nice job, deductive reasoning applied. Love the videos! Stay safe, and God bless
We lucky few get great content from S.M.A. This channel is definitely worth millions of subscribers. Nice work as always.
Had one with the same issue just on the passenger side. The video helped a lot, this one had high resistance so it didn't take the whole bank down right away but after 30 seconds they all misfired
SMA videos are never boring 😴 in my opinion. I'll be binge watching sma for Thanksgiving.
Thank you so much just fixed my 09 chevy 5.3 after going to 2 different mechanics and spending 1200 on useless plugs and wires and coil packs.
You figured it out thanks bro
I wish I had your troubleshooting skills. You are very good at what you do. Grounds have gotten me before.
I love that since I started watching sma I can almost guess correctly everytime what's wrong with the vehicle
Far from a boring video. it helped me IMMENSLEY!
Thank you brother. Had an issue for the last couple days Both of my banks were missing bad under load. had enough to start the truck but that was about it. Move the ground up and put new eye and all is good now!
Just went through that with my Burb..it's a Chevy thing.
Great video 👊💪
You'd think they'd take 2 minutes install that in a 5.00 plastic connector.
"Gotta put them grounds where nobody can find/repair them"
It's not boring, when it's a simple fix.
Videos are all well done.
This was the most best informative video that helped me solve my problem. Bad ground on the block.
I was having this same exact issue. I replaced wires, coils, and plugs. Found your video and this was my problem! THANK YOU🙌👏. I was getting frustrated haha.
Not boring at all Mr O...thank you!
You sir just fixed my problem by just looking at your video....thank you God bless you.
It's only easy, boring, obvious... when you're a pro. Logic is my favorite tool. Love your process. Love your vids. ...even the easy ones.
